Will give you 5 STARS If you fix: 1. Cakes - need to be better. The frosting on the tres leches cake was not good, as well as the moisture of the cake, was dry compared to many other leche cakes ive had. The frosting taste like an Albertsons or a Ralphs cake. Was not a pleasure to eat this for my friend and I. 2. Hygiene : the cashier after handing her cash did grab the goodies with a paper & not her bare hand which is good, but the tongs as the cashier bagged then was left Bare on the cashier counter and they just put it there and use it to bag the customers goods. I would put a paper plate or even a paper towel underneath those tongs. Cash, phones, hands, peoples purse , etc im sure people put those on the cashiers counter when paying. 4 STARS: the croissant was fresh & delicious, so was the Chocolate Concha. The Concha i would make it sweeter bc my friend said it tastes like bare bread and needs coffee or something else with it. 0verall i will come back and hopefully they will update these things read more

This panaderia is absolutely a must try. Probably the best in my opinion. This one of the counted places that sells cubiletes which in summary are bites of heaven. My cousin who lives in Texas remembers this place and always asks for it when he visits. Their breads are so fresh and there is even a window where you can see them making new batches or decorating. UPDATED 04-19-2008: I've been scouring all the panaderias since first coming to this place and believe this when I tell you, no other panaderia compares to La Espiga. This is the only place where I just go weak at the knees for baked goods and those of you who know me know that I don't fall for any baked goods THAT easily!! ----------------------- Believe it or not I've not actually eaten Mexican baked goods before. For some odd reason unbeknown to even me, I thought they were gonna be sweet like hell. I usually walk into a panaderias and then I ogle the stuff and then take a few deep breaths and then walk out again. That was the extent of my previous relationship with panaderias. BUT NO MORE! Now that I've sunk my chompers into a slice of this delicious stuff, I'm proud to say that my Mexican bakery cherry's been popped and there is no turning back. I couldn't believe my tastebuds when I say none of this stuff is overly sweet. I don't know why I thought they looked super sweet, but they're completely pleasing to my palate. I have no clue what I ate, but trust me, they were all pretty damn good. While I didn't particularly like the one which looked like an empanada with sugar crystals and a custard filling because the outside was too crusty and heavy for me, I did however LOVE the one which looked like a triangular slab of cheesecake and tasted remotely like cheesecake in texture but had no cheesy taste. Another pastry I tasted looked like a Portuguese egg tart but again didn't taste eggy to me. I also got a savory one -- a bread with a queso and jalepeno filling -- MMMMM it was delicious with the right amount of kick in the creamy goodness. The best part of all was 6 items only cost $5.10 compared to the 3 bucks each we paid for the teenie cupcakes (you know who you are!) and ended up feeding to the garbage can. I'm sold! I was very disappointed by this bakery. The cakes, cookies, and breads look good, but the taste was bland and mediocre compared to similar places I had been in Los Angeles. I reserved a cake for a birthday celebration, which they required me to go in person to reserve (a nuisance, and extra unecessary exposure during COVID). I asked for a Tres Leches Cake with NO FRUIT. The person I bought the cake for won't touch anything with fruit on it. They checked the box for vanilla custard, but when we got the cake, it was vanilla custard filled with fruit cocktail. I tasted the cake - it was bland and disappointing. The person I bought the cake for didn't touch it. On a COVID note, the worker helping me was not wearing a mask, just a plastic face shield, which has been proven to be pretty ineffective. I was honestly reluctant to eat the cake. read more

One of the best Pan de Dulce places in all of OC. It's older and in a strip mall, but it is tried and true. Me encantan las empanadas de dulce de leche Orejas (Palmiers to those farmer's market folk that don't know slang for yummy pastries shaped liked ears....*sigh* I got some fresh rolls this morning too and a savory pastry filled with cheese and jalapenos. Never realized this gem whenever I went to the defunct Detroit Bar now Wayfarer, as they share the same parking lot. Do wish there were labels or bring someone that's knowledgeable, since I felt bad asking the staff so many questions, though asking regulars is another good way to get ideas, which I did. This time I gravitated towards items that looked like versions of cheesecakes, and I got one with vanilla and another with coffee and another I believe was blended with what I believe is corn. All the items I got my family liked. For me that's Flan and when I want the best Flan in Orange County for a price too low to publish I go to this way too good to be true Panaderia. We are French-Canadian and my mom made Flan from scratch when we were kids and both her and my brother agree that this is the best Flan around. Better than most expensive French restaurants that are going to charge you 8$ for a piece half as big. In addition to their Flan they make a unique Ham and Cheese croissant with white Mexican cream cheese and jalapenos. I also like this chocolate cupcake they make that looks just like a Hostess cake. This place is not too far from Triangle Square in Costa Mesa. When entering the bakery, you are overwhelmed with the mouth-watering smells of something sweet and delicious. As you can see from the pics, my friend selected a whole tray full of baked goodies to try. On sampling these breads, I found them to be lightly sweet. Those custard pies were so good and so fresh! And the heart shaped dulce de leche cookies and mexican wedding cookies were delightfully light and not too sweet. I'm not a fan of conchas (the shell looking round shaped breads with sugar on top) but apparently everyone at my work loved them--because they were all gone. The ham and cheese "croissant" looking thing had a generous amount of ham and cream cheese. It made for a hearty breakfast on the go and was super cheap, as I recall--compared to other bakeries.
