I might be the first in my friend group to admit it, but on Sunday we went there twice. Yes, you read this correctly--I ate at LA Crawfish TWICE in one day. How did this happen, you ask? My crawfish-loving friend Jenny (NOT Jennifer M. for once!) first invited us around 2pm to get our peel'n'slurp on. The weather was absolutely perfect and put us in the mood, so we went for our first rendezvous since last year. Since initially we went for a "snack," Kyle C. and I split one pound of Cajun (medium) and one pound of garlic (medium) plus an order of seasoned fries. First off, I did NOT know that they will give you bibs! This was a huge plus in my book. While the paper towel rolls and plastic table cloths are nice amenities as well, I feel as though the bibs really make the experience feel as crazy as it looks. After we were set up, we got to chowing down and I suddenly realized that I actually like the garlic a little better than the Cajun. Is that blasphemous to say? Even more surprising was how much the flavor of all the delicious crawfish juice on my fingers contributed to the delicious seasoned fries I was shoving in my mouth. I was trying to wash it all down with a little Tsing Tao (BYOB in a grocery store is a GREAT idea) but there were definitely times where it was clear how much bigger my eyes are than my stomach. After we went home and relaxed, I couldn't stop thinking about how amazing our little snack was. As if reading my mind, my friend Jenny texted me again and asked if it was crazy for us to all go back for dinner. Sadly, I couldn't pass up the opportunity to a) do something ridiculous, and b) eat more crawfish. So we went back. This time, we upped our garlic count since we liked it so much but still got a little Cajun on the side just to make sure we were covering all our bases. Unfortunately they'd run out of the seasoned fries (!!!!) so sweet potato had to do. I tried hard to make them taste just as good by dousing them in sriracha, but I'm telling you, the seasoned fries + Cajun crawfish combo is just something else. It seems like in February the crawfish size ranges from medium to large, but they promised that March would see the more "jumbo" sized ones. Needless to say, we will be back. Oh, and...in case you're wondering what happened when we asked the wait staff if they had recognized us from earlier in the day, they said they hadn't and looked at us in what had to be a combination of absolute disbelief and horror. They asked if we lived nearby. We said no. They said that usually they get people who live nearby in a few times a week, but no one had ever come multiple times in a single day. Love it! LA Crawfish is another gem that Yelp helped me find. Crawfish was a weekly thing for me when I lived in a bigger city but since I moved, I can only get it when I travel. Every time I come to Houston I always have to "get my fix." Anyways Im going to touch on the important parts: Food: I order 3 pounds of crawfish-- 2 lbs garlic butter and 1 lb Cajun. The garlic butter is their signature flavor. It was perfect. The balance between the butter and garlic was balanced. The Cajun was good too, but not as good as the garlic butter. Next time I'll order extra garlic! Also, we ordered "spicy" and it was a bit spicy for my taste. Ill go for medium next time. I still tore it up even with the spice level higher than what I like. I have to say, it tasted a bit overcooked and slightly rubbery but it was still super tasty. The crawfish were big too--longer than my ring finger. Service: Its a self-service kinda place. You order at the counter and pick it up yourself when your named is called. They give you a plastic table cloth and you set your own table. The turnaround time for food is very very fast. Too much trouble to go thru just to get some bland tasting crawfish,parking is horrible and this place is too crowded

As crawfish becomes more and more popular, unfortunately after many many times of coming here, I've definitely noticed the quality of food decline. Crawfish has gone up to $6.99/pound here, which is understandable because they say "costs have gone up", but I expect all my crawfish to be alive and delicious. About 1/6 of my 4 lb. bag of crawfish was dead. About halfway through the meal, we started to save up a pile of the dead and inedible rotten crawfish and brought them to the register. (My other friends who ordered 10 lbs of crawfish brought back at least 2 pounds of dead crawfish.) They did the right thing by replacing the dead ones, but even then, after we received the replacement, we still had a few dead ones in there, SMH. For the live crawfish, the taste was good, but not good as when they first opened. There were several in there that were just straight up rotten, which was horrible. Disappointed to write this review as I used to be a huge fan, but I guess they haven't been able to sustain their quality as their business has grown. read more

They even have pho here.. pho = (best hangover cure) which is verygood by the way.. I have a feeling I shocked and disgusted at least one person while eating here. I convinced (read: paid for) my brother to take me to get crawfish while I was in Houston, and boy, did we. The crawfish was $5.99/lb, and you can choose from two flavors: cajun or garlic butter. I got 3 lbs of each. Corn, potatoes and sausage are sold individually but are pretty cheap. I got some of those too, since they fill you up better than crawfish. The counter service was very quick, less than 3 minutes after I ordered they were calling out my name. The crawfish comes in a big plastic bag set in an aluminum foil tray, and they give you a roll of paper towels, a plastic tablecloth, and bibs and gloves if you ask. You should ask, because you'll need it. One of the things I love about crawfish is how messy it is. You are expected to get it everywhere as you tear into a big ol' pile of spicy mudbugs. We definitely went through half a roll of paper towels. The crawdads were delicious, although I prefered the cajun over the garlic butter. The crawfish were mostly on the smaller side, with a couple of medium and large ones occasionally. The place was always packed, and I noticed that most people got their orders to go. Parking outside is kind of cutthroat on a Saturday, but with food as good as this, I would expect nothing less. read more

It's been about two years since I was last here and I remember it being good. Came today and it was busy as usual. Medium garlic butter crawfish 1/5 Ordered three pounds of crawfish and they tasted really bland and 80% of them were soft. They tasted like they were previously frozen or on the verge of dying. I think the restaurant was too busy and just boiled the crawfish as quickly as they could and mixed garlic sauce on the outside. The heads weren't sweet and some of them I had to spit out onto my napkin. I ate about four of them and couldn't couldn't eat anymore. gave the rest to the biffy. Crawfish pho 3.5/5 Interesting flavors. Tasted like normal pho broth mixed with the bottom of the garlic crawfish sauce. Some pieces of crawfish tails and the sausage pieces were nice and fatty. Chicken wings 3/5 Pretty good. The skin was really crispy and wings were meaty. Ordered the spicy garlic which I think was just fried wings topped with the dry spicy powder they give for crawfish. Did not taste garlic at all This place was soooo busy I felt like I couldn't even complain to the staff. DON'T BELIEVE THE HYPE! At one point in time, several years ago, LA crawfish hype was justified. No longer. I am thoroughly convinced there was a major change in management/ownership sometime in 2012. I ordered my crawfish and by the time I paid and placed my card back in my wallet 6lbs of crawfish were on the counter. So clearly not made to order. Then when I opened the bag all of the seasoning was dumped on top. There was zero flavor to the crawfish itself. Goo goobs of flavor all around it but none to it. Folks that really dive into crawfish suck the head because a ton of flavor is hidden in there. When ALL of the flavor resides in the seasoning dumped on top and not an iota of flavor in the head or tail, I assure you, it's some hinky business afoot -_- This review is a long time coming as this is my 4th or 5th consecutive negative experience here (I won't EVEN discuss the two times they gave me spoiled potatoes). YUM. The first place I ate at when I arrived to Houston and boy was I really happy that we came here! Ordered two pounds of Garlic Butter Crawfish - Medium ($7.99/LB), a basket of sweet potato fries ($3) and a pound of Garlic Butter Shrimp ($9.99/LB). Everything was also really cheap and worth a bang for your buck! I approve! Everything tasted wonderful and I loved the flavor of the Garlic Butter Sauce. On the way to pick up some groceries I couldn't help to see a large group of people near the food cafeteria. To my surprise it was this crawfish place. I had to stop by and check it out for myself. And boy oh boy was I surprised. I wasn't expecting the flavors out of a place nestled inside Ranch 99 Market. The food was great and the service was very welcoming. The crawfish was a great size and the spices were just right. After trying the crawfish I dived into some snow crab clusters as well too. I hadn't been here in a minute but rolled through on this past Friday afternoon and it was delicious. I had crawfish, corn, potatoes and an order of lemon pepper wings. I placed my order to go. I got home, got comfortable and it was on and popping! LOL I enjoyed every single bit of it. The very first time I visited this spot, I didn't have a yelp account. I tell you, the food was so good and I asked for the cook. He came out to meet me and was just as pleasant as he could be. I thanked him for the great food and service. Second, the sauce is very flavored and MSG free (very important to me), which makes you always crave for the next one. I've only been twice, but I have to say, I'm a fan!! Don't forget to check-in for your 10% discount (win-win!). The crawfish came out really fast-- I literally got my crawfish brought out less than a minute after sitting down. Just like the first time I went, they were a great combination of garlicky and spicy (if you can't handle spicy, you can also get them regular or mild). They have a variety of condiments for you to make your own custom dip-- I used a mix of the spicy seasoning, pepper, and lime juice. I don't know how they do it in Louisiana, but their flavors were definitely working for me. The crawfish were also a very good size! With the supermarket close by, I had first picked up a drink (it's also BYOB) before heading over. The first time I ate there was great, but somehow, the second time was even better! This visit, we were offered some dessert fries, which were basically beignet fingers topped with condensed milk and powdered sugar-- um, YES. I WILL be ordering some more of that next time! It's true that you can't really go wrong with condensed milk and powdered sugar but the fingers themselves were made just right! It's also not unheard of to run over to the grocery store and bring over some popsicles for dessert. Someone in my group picked up some melon pops. They may not sound like much, but in the words of my friend Suzanne (NOT Charlie Sheen), "winner!!" I haven't reviewed in awhile but here goes nothing. LA Crawfish, tucked inside 99 Ranch, next to all the food court restaurants. Tonight, it was like LA Crawfish takeover. All the tables in the food court were taken over by white plastic table covers and piles of decimated crawfish bodies. Overall, I liked it! Good flavors, nice sauce, and decently sized crawfish. I was pleasantly surprised by the short wait time between ordering my food and getting it so that's always a good thing! It's nice, for once, to order crawfish and not have it take 3 hours to come out. We got crawfish, snow crab legs (the last pound for the night, or so I heard. Sorry everyone else!) and shrimp. We also ordered corn and the fries. All of it was very tasty and it had a nice kick to it. It left the tingle on your lips even after you've washed it down with water. That's always a good feeling. In fact, I give this place a whole star for the fact that my dad always says things are never spicy enough for him but THIS GLORIOUS DAY, he said the spiciness defeated him. LA Crawfish = 1, Dad = 0. The staff behind the counter was incredibly nice and helpful, very cheerful, and always smiling, which is a far cry from some of the other crawfish places I've ventured to. You walk I. The food court area...and order!! $6.99/lb is perfect for the quality, flavor, and size of the crawfish your get. We ordered garlic AND Cajun. It's $4 extra to miss them but you don't have to do that... You get a liner for your table.. A foil pan...and have at it. Garlic butter and extra seasoning is available as well as ice cold water. You're gonna need it. The boiled shrimp rock my socks too!! And my damn tongue. I did this shake my hands in the air near my mouth thing to see if it will cool the spiciness. Mentally it works. By virtue of being located inside the Ranch 99 food court, LA Crawfish is one of the cleanest Asian crawfish places in Houston. The Yelp lead image and announcement sucker you in with "XL crawfish," though my most recent visit didn't yield mudbugs significantly bigger than earlier season March. I find size to be a function of seasonality and luck, anyway. I'm more concerned if the crawfish are too small or started dead, neither of which seemed to be an issue with LA Crawfish. Taste is a more primary concern, and I put LA Crawfish a cut above Crawfish & Noodles but still below the gold standard of Boiling Crab or Jolynn's. If ambiance is a big deal for you, LA Crawfish is one of the most user-friendly. Ordering is via counter, which avoids the nasty tip bug, though the wait times in line can get long. Seating is self-serve, and limited. If you're daring, dash off to the general food court and hope a random Chinese lady doesn't yell at you for it. I would not recommend sitting at the next door restaurant. The best part of LA Crawfish is two-fold: self-serve condiments (make your own sauce!) and BYOB. After you get your crawfish, you're pretty much left to your own devices. Also, another benefit to being in Ranch 99 is the ability to go snag a mediocre boba slushie after. Or, you know, stock up on groceries. Oh right, the food. Crawfish is $5.99pp, corn and potatoes separate. You can get regular cajun or Asian garlic butter, either option with varying levels of spice. I wanted to love this place... meh. Service was great no doubt. Decided to try this place when I saw on Facebook that they had a special on crawfish. $4.99 per pound with minimum 3 pound purchase. I thought it was a great deal! I also used my yelp check in offer but the cashier would only apply it to our two sodas. She said it didn't apply to the crawfish. Once the BF and I ordered our crawfish we received it literally within seconds... I thought, wow! Unfortunately it went downhill from there. I've had crawfish a few times this season and the crawfish have been HUGE. The sizes here ranged from small to medium. Okay that might not be a big deal. But then as we started eating, the crawfish did not taste fresh. The small tails were super rubbery. I was so disappointed but I guess we got what we paid for? If so, we would have loved to pay the regular price to get larger and fresher crawfish! We chose the garlic butter seasoned as spicy and it was too hot! I never had crawfish this spicy before. They started serving pho here. I guess they need to stay in business when it's not crawfish season. I've been here a couple of times and had really good crawfish both times. So why only three stars you ask? Well, the last time we were here, my girlfriend got food poisoning the next day. She nearly passed out at work and was having uncontrollable vomiting among other symptoms. The last thing she ate before that happened was LA crawfish. It was about 8-12 hours later which coincides with the time frame of most toxin-bourne illnesses. And before you ask what makes me such a expert on the subject, I can tell you that in addition to being a medical professional, I have conducted researched specifically on traveler's diarrhea and other food-bourne illnesses. What about me, you ask? Was I violently ill as well? The answer is no. I'm Chinese. If you are lucky enough to avoid the bad batches, the crawfish here are quite tasty. I haven't written a review before, but I had to for this place. I lived in New Orleans for several years before returning to Houston just last year and I have to say, this is the best crawfish I have EVER had ANYWHERE. I don't know if its the vietnamese flair in the cajun seasoning or what, but it is just great. Price is reasonable as well. The first time I went I was pretty confused by the location (& drove around in circles, haha), but now they have a little sign out front! woohoo~ Edit: My review was for the many times I came by last year. Now having visited twice this season, I'm a little disappointed. I had to knock off 1 star. Still good, but not as amazing as before. My bf thought the same. I have been eating at LA Crawfish for years and it's always been consistently good. After today, I will NEVER eat here (at this location) again. The quality has gone to sh**. Crawfish tasted like they'd been previously frozen, were fishy, and looked black as though they hadn't been cleaned and had never been purged. Garlic noodles which are normally bangin' with flavor were bland and tough. I'm extremely disappointed with my experience which makes me sad since I live right down the street. The location in Katy off of Mason is REALLY GOOD though. Went a couple weeks back with my mom and really enjoyed it... too bad about this location. HORRIBLE CUSTOMER SERVICE!! I would never call my mother an adventurous eater, so when she told me that there was a crawfish place I had to try when I came back in town, I was intrigued. Sure enough, we made time to head over to what used to be a Fiesta grocery store for lunch. Inside, were a bevy of different shops and restaurants. We went during the week so it wasn't nearly as crowded as the weekends. Also, instead of going for the namesake crawfish, we ordered a bunch of Chicken Wings flavored with 5 Spice Basil and Thai Tamarind. Neither were hot spicy, but they were certainly full of flavor. Awesome stuff! Service was quick and basic. You order at the counter and then spread out on picnic tables. You eat off paper plates and napkins, but hey, it works! Order your crawfish or other food (hubby had the Cajun wings and those were really good too) 2. Get your white plastic table cloth and roll of paper towel for your table 3. Crawfish comes in bag to keep it steaming hot so either a) eat straight out of bag and use table cover as trash area of vice versa, b) dump out all the goodness and use the bag us your trash bag. Either way, prepare to get messy!! 4. After done eating, wrap up everything in table cover and toss. The crawfish here is well seasoned with tons of garlic chunks and I'm guessing butter. I was pleasantly surprised by how BIG some of the crawfish were. In for a challenge? Their spicy levels are medium, spicy, extra spicy, and hotter than hell. Don't know how recently they put up that Hotter than Hell challenge, on their wall. The jist of it: pay ~$21 for 3 lbs. of hotter than hell crawfish, finish it in 20 min with no help, water, paper towels, sucking heads and licking fingers afterward = get on the wall of fame, free t-shirt, and every time you come back with the t-shirt you get free perks and 10% purchase. read more

I really like the flavor at this place. Maybe because they get the spicy level right. I get the spiciest level which apparently has habanero and ghost peppers in it- my kind of fire!!!! Everyone has there likes and dislikes of flavor and I eat at a lot of crawfish places. LA Crawfish's flavor is definitely unique for them and I am a fan. If you're their friend on their FB page, they randomly will have flash sales for $5.99 during off peak season. What can I say that hasnt already been said about this amazing place?!?!?! Honestly if you like crawfish or seafood or wings or ANYTHING GO! I have been here many different times and each time I love it even more. Some of my favorite items: -Crawfish- obviously! delicious crawfish ALL year round. They are pretty huge too. I like the garlic butter sauce medium...to me that is the most amazing crawfish sauce I have ever tasted! Sometimes I order the potatos and corn just so I can eat more of that sauce! - Lemon pepper wings. Why and how are these SOO good? This doesnt seem like it would be a great wing place but man are those lemon pepper wings delicious! It sounds weird, but everytime I eat crawfish I need some wings too! - The newest menu addition is oysters and I had to give them a try. They have 3 kinds and I tried the ponzu oysters and I have to say they were amazing. Ponzu sauce, fish eggs, and seaweed all on top of a raw oyster. AMAZING! Perhaps they've started to slack because they've made such a name for themselves and people will be lining up no matter what. Perhaps they've become complacent. We got our orders extremely quickly - within 5 minutes of ordering. I'm used to waiting a good 20-30 minutes for crawfish at other establishments so this caught me off guard. I didn't know if this batch had just been cooked or had been sitting around waiting to be coated in seasoning, bagged up and delegated out. My boyfriend really enjoyed the garlic seasoning on his crawfish but he immediately knew that the mud bugs were overcooked. Perhaps a downfall of their quick delivery is how they do their mass prep. The crawfish didn't absorb any of the flavor despite being completely saturated in it. They probably cooked the crawfish first and then mixed it in with seasoning versus looking crawfish with the seasoning. The crawfish pho was not the best pho I've ever had in the world. But it definitely had some crawfish flavors in the broth. The portion size was large but for 7 bucks and some change, it better be a big bowl of soup. The crawfish meat in my soup was just as overcooked and tough as the crawfish my boyfriend had. Even the little guy hanging off of my pho bowl was overcooked. There wasn't a plethora of mud bug meat to consume and they put sausage in to make up for it. The sausage was tasty but I ordered crawfish pho not sausage pho! In addition to that, they put bean sprouts in the broth for you which I'm not a fan of. If I want to add in bean sprouts, mint and other veggies to my pho, I should be put it into my soup myself. I may give LA Crawfish a chance again in the far future but I'll probably stick to my other go-to joints in the meantime. read more

THIS PLACE IS THE BOMB.COM!!! I was at first deterred when I realized this place is in a food-court type area inside of an asian market. I was worried I needed a better "patio atmosphere" to enjoy my crawfish. WELL let me tell you....that went straight out the window after seeing huge piles of heavily-sauce-coated crawfish all over the tables of a packed restaurant. I could tell before even ordering that I had just discovered something magical. First let me say....The crawfish are freaking HUGE. This is what you get at OTHER places: 2 monster crawdaddy's on the top of mostly average sized crawdaddy's, on top of several mini-crawdaddy's..... THIS is the deal at LA CRAWFISH: You get 5 super power monster crawdaddy's on top of mostly monster crawdaddy's on top of 2 average sized crawdaddy's. I swear it's true. In addition, you can individually pick the level of spiciness you prefer. It's not one-spice-fits all. I LOVE THAT. AND..... one of the owners told me his aunt spends 12 HOURS making the secret sauce, the crawfish come out COVERED in it, you can't avoid getting it all over the place. I hate when you get a plate of crawfish with a little sprinkle of TONY"s over it. Sooooo boring. On top of THAT is is BYOB. YAY cheap beer :-) And on top of THAT, they say they are gonna serve crawfish most of the YEAR!!! WHAAAT??!?!? Seriously, what more could you ask for, people? Oh..... i do have one complaint.... The garlic butter sauce is still to die for, but the quality of the crawfish was not good. I was here a few weeks ago, and got 5 lbs. I would say about half of the crawfish was not fresh, like the shell is mushy, the flesh was not firm. I really hope they start buying fresher produce. read more

It comes with 4 difference spice levels, with the spiciest level containing the atomic Habanero chiles. They were of mixed sizes, though I was lucky enough to score a handful of big whoppers. Potatoes, sausage, and corn will cost you extra. The #3 spice level was a lot more oily than the milder ones for some reason, which was no bueno (Spanish for no good) for my stomach. No waitstaff, 10% discount for checking, delicious crawfish = the best value in Houston so far. You can also bring in beer that you bought in the market. read more

As a person who only started eating crawfish within the last 5 years, I think this is one of the best place to go. Garlic butter (spicey) - i prefer this over the cajun style because of all the minced garlic and butter BYOB - you can walk over to the ranch 99 grocery area and pick up a 6 pack TVs - usually they have whatever big sporting event is on, but recently was able to catch one of the greatest movies of all time - grandma's boy - while eating Wings - their wings are pretty awesome and their selection of flavors are pretty solid... definitely a fan of the spicey garlic and the spice basil read more

Got 6 pounds, crawfish was mushy and without much flavor. Couldn't taste the garlic nor butter flavor and was watery. For 7.99/lb there are much better choices out there. We have ordered from there several times each crawfish season, probably will be the last time. read more

After a few hot hours in the sun from the Art Festival, we stopped by here to get our crawfish fix. Since my bf lives in the Heights, this is the closest Asian place that sells crawfish. A friend of his said it wasn't too bad so we decided to check it out. I must say, it was pretty good for the price and size. Very quick service, polite, and clean. Crawfish came out steaming hot in a plastic bag. Very garlicky and spicy! But that's probably because my bf opted for the 1X spicy! Is he crazy!?! Hot but I was still able to eat it. :) Don't bother getting the corn...very bland. 5.99/lb...not too bad compared to other places that are 6.99 and up. read more

Simply delish. Order the 'crawfish' pho. It's in quotations cuz there's like 3 of the buggers but the broth is amazing. Ignore the big puddle of grease and you'll be golden. Crawfish is crazy spicy. Don't let the garlic butter name fool you. My lips are on fire still from the burn of eating one crawfish. We ordered the Cajun wings and those were scrumptious as well. Though we didn't understand why it needed sugar in it. But still tasty.
