Once upon a time, or really just 4 years ago, this place had hands down the best crawfish in Houston. I'm not sure if the management changed, but I've given this place enough chances where I won't be back. The crawfish seasoning is amazing, but the quality of the crawfish is not up to par. The first time, I could tell there were some frozen mixed in with live ones, but the second time, they were all previously frozen and tiny. You can tell by its mushy texture and dark insides that they've been sitting for who knows how long. The wings were still decent, but plenty of places have good wings. Late review Given that it's Chinese New Year last week I wanted to go get Asian food but my boys wanted to get crawfish. So as a compromise we went to LA crawfish in 99 Ranch to get some food with Asian flair. We ordered 5 lbs crawfish (spicy garlic butter) and magic Cajun shrimp fried rice. After finishing the 5 lbs my kids wanted another 2 lbs as well as plain white rice which we used the leftover crawfish seasoning to make our own version of LA garlic butter rice. Here's my overview. Food 2.5 stars Crawfish - seasoned perfectly. The hot garlic butter was a killer. Great flavor (sweet and spicy and nice kick). Plenty of flavor that satisfied all of our crawfish craving. One of the best flavored crawfish I have had so gotta give it 5 stars. For the sauce. Unfortunately I can't say the same about how the crawfish was cooked. It was way overcooked. The was mushy and hard to get out. Not like most crawfish places where the meat is plump and easily pulled out from the tail. It was like I was at all you can eat buffet Chinese place that served crawfish ok the side. Really disappointed that the crawfish was so overcooked. Definitely 2 stars at best which averages to 2.5 stars Magic Cajun shrimp fried rice - what a disappointment. Few pieces of shrimp tossed around in unflavored rice which lacked flavor. Only way that made it better was by adding the white rice and splashing the leftover spicy butter crawfish seasoning to the mixture. 3 stars Atmosphere 4 stars. Quick service after ordering (prob why crawfish was overcooked) with plastic table cloth provided so that it's easily cleaned. Also located in food court of 99 cent ranch which made it easy to get food from other places there to sample with the yummy seasoned crawfish. Definitely 4 stars. Over all 3 stars. It's unfortunate that the crawfish was so overcooked and the Magic shrimp fried rice lacked any magic except that it was pricey. I loved the seasoning on the crawfish and it was killer mixed with the rice. We might give it a second chance but given that Houston has plethora of crawfish places that can cook crawfish perfectly it's hard for me to justify giving this place a second chance except that there are variety of other places within the 99 cent ranch food court to choose and given that the crawfish seasoning was soooo awesome I might be persuaded by my kids. But if we do we are definitely passing on the magic fried rice and getting the plain rice and mixing it with the sauce and save some bucks too. Updates review LA Crawfish reached out and offered redemption so once again I took my kids and gave it a second chance. My kids were pretty excited (they loved the crawfish there and since they don't ever pay they were doubly pumped) and I was too (who doesn't love free food). We duplicated our last order with 8lbs of spicy garlic butter, magic shrimp fried rice, and plain rice (to mix with the magic fried rice and the crawfish sauce. Crawfish - as previously noted still one of the best seasoned crawfish we have had. Kids and I absolutely loved it with awesome kick and taste. The combination of the butter, garlic, onions and hot sauce was so tasty. I wanted to take leftover sauce home. In fact next time I will. As for the texture it was definitely better then last time. However I still noted some that were definitely overlooked but vast majority were perfect. Given the taste of that super yummy spicy sauce this can be overlooked Overall 4.5 stars (5++ for sauce and 4 for the crawfish) Magic rice - definitely better then last time. More flavor but still lacked the punch once we added the sauce from the crawfish n the extra white rice it was a killer. 3 stars alone. 4.5 with sauce and plain rice added Overall it was a much better experience then previous visit. Food came out quickly. Seasoning on the crawfish was superb n spot on. Magic rice was better after the additions. So I'm revising it to 4.5 stars (not quite 5 stars yet) PS. Gotta admit that I did get partial subsidy (aka free 5lbs and magic rice) for the return visit but I did pay for the plain rice and extra 3lb crawfish. Would I have returned to second visit without it? Probably not (my kids would have regardless cause they raved about the crawfish seasoning). Who would have thunk that there would be a mudbug place inside of Ranch 99! the place was packed for a Friday I ordered 1 lb of 1/4 scale spicy crawdads to go (to eat in the Korean place next door where my friend had ordered his food) $6.49 with tax. The staff were friendly. Crawdads very fresh - a good mix of different sizes, jumbo, large, and little baby ones. Ah, the taste of a juicy head with lemon juice is divine! I'm not sure I like so much garlic satay on my crawdads, but I could get used to it! Love the flavor of the Crawfish. Crawfish quality is usually fresh but we went when it wasn't busy and the crawfish tasted overcooked. I like their crawfish pho even though it is a tad greasy. Why I knock it one star is because we ordered the oysters which had a really great flavor but they had pieces of shell and grit in every oyster which made it impossible to eat. They offered to reclean the oysters but I would have liked them to offer a refund because even after they recleaned them there was still pieces of the shell. Soooo first place we hit up after our 6 hour drive was here bc we heard so much about it. We ordered 9lbs of crawfish. 5lbs was the garlic butter (that was the best I feel) and the cajun spice. It was all good just the crawfish was pretty small. We also did one dozen of the Japanese ponzu style oysters and one dozen of the Thai Chilli oysters. Japanese ponzu oysters were alright, it had smelt roe with shredded dry seaweed strips on too doused in ponzu sauce all chilled over ice. This place is always packed and generally has somewhat of a line. But the line moves relatively quickly and there's usually a spot open after you order at the counter. I have had the crawfish and crawfish pho here before. I generally get the garlic butter at medium spicy. On my most recent visit, it seems like their spice level is weaker than before. But that seems to be something I have seen across the board at crawfish places. The size of the crawfish was pretty good, but there were still some dead/baby ones. They give enough sauce in the bag for you to go bag and dip the crawfish too. The crawfish pho was pretty good. Definitely not the best pho in Houston, but still pretty good. There isn't very much crawfish in the pho but they make up for it with sausage. Overall it was good enough to satisfy my pho cravings. 3 stars cause there's better crawfish joints in town in my opinion and better pho places. Having heard so much about this place, we finally have time to give it a try. Well not bad but I don't see why there's such a hype. We got here around 7:30 Wednesday evening and there wasn't a long line, we were so relieved since lots of the reviews mentioned long line to order or get a table. Most of the crawfish were fresh, but I did came across a rotten one, and the hubby saw a few dead ones. Obviously 4lbs was not enough for two hungry foodies, we ended up getting 3lbs more, some wings, and gumbo. This time there's a long line for ordering, but still our food came out pretty fast. We ended up spending $70 for two, 7lbs of crawfish, wings, fries, gumbo, and corn. Weird enough, I liked the fries of all that we ate. Then the wings. Then the cajun crawfish... Update*** The owner offered us a free meal of what we had ordered as an apology and my husband convinced me to try it again. We took the owner up on their offer and tried again. The flavor definitely was there this time. However the quality of the shrimp wasn't great. It was ok. It seemed as if the crawfish might have been over cooked but i asked for a pound of shrimp which was amazing. We will def be back since it is local for us. Thanks again for the free meal. This is my last time eat there for crawfish. $7.95lb in this season should be live/fresh cooked. When I asked if it's LIVE, they said yes. Let me start by saying I'm from New Orleans. Now, with that being said, I just don't know what all of the hype is about. FROZEN crawfish?!? Yeah, this was a disappointment for me. I have been eating crawfish all my life. The only way to eat boiled crawfish is to eat it FRESH! For an amateur crawfish eater, it may pass for them but not for someone like me. When the head of the crawfish taste like freezer burn and the meat stick to the shell, there is no doubt the crawfish were previously frozen. This wasn't for all the crawfish I ate, but I would say that half of them were previously frozen. They offer two flavors: Garlic Butter or Cajun style with mild or spicy. Oh, how the mighty have fallen. LA Crawfish has been a favorite of mine since 2011. I recall even dubbing it the best crawfish in Houston at one point. I took a break from crawfish last year so I haven't been here for at least a year. Sadly, it's nowhere near as good as I remember it being. My husband and I visited last night and they were slammed, but orders were coming out of the kitchen fast. We were in the process of paying for our meal at the front counter, and our five pounds of crawfish were already ready for pick up. Now I understand why they manage to pump food out so quickly, they're cutting all sorts of corners. I am a little doubtful we got what we actually ordered. It seemed more like four pounds. The crawfish were indeed fresh, but they did not taste good at all. I usually enjoy sucking the heads, but they tasted so briny and gritty, I gave up after my first few crawfish. The crawfish tails were bland. It seems like they just boiled the crawfish in water without any sort of seasoning, and then threw some garlic butter sauce on it as an afterthought. The sauce was also very watery, it seems like the crawfish were not properly drained. We also ordered a pound of shrimp , the garlic butter sauce had some of the same issues, but the shrimp was fresh and sweet. The fries were crispy and seasoned well - I am very sad to say that this was actually the best part of our meal! We spent about $55 for our meal, I can definitely think of much better things to do with that money. If you're the type to savor every part of the crawfish, this is the place to go. I was incredibly impressed with the food and the customer service.Tucked inside Ranch 99, is a cute crawfish/pho joint with a backyard feel that has wooden benches. I was immediately greeted by one of the young owners, who I found out quit his career in finance and pursued his desire to open a business. Service: That's definitely one thing that stood out about this place -- the staff seemed really grateful that you were willing to give them a chance. I noticed one of the guys walked around and tried to get to know his customers and share their story. From the owner to the dad(I'm assuming) that works in the back, everyone was extremely friendly. Food: This is probably my new favorite crawfish place. I'll probably get a lot of heat for this, but I think it's even better than the popular Boiling Crab. Their seasoning is a very well blend of butter, cajun seasoning, and generous amount of garlic. And I can't put my finger on it, but there's a very slight hint of sweetness that balances out all the savory flavors. This is one of the few places I know where the seasoning actually seeps into the crawfish meat itself. Most places, the seasoning just sits on the outside. If you do go, you must ask for extra garlic. And one of the best parts, the condiments are free! Another thing that I, and my friends, were surprised at was how good the sausage was. I'm normally not a fan of sausages, or the places I've been to have bought brands I don't care for. But whatever vendor they're buying from, I hope they stick with it! For all inner-loopers, this is the closest destination for "asian-style" crawfish. Located inside Ranch 99's food court; it's a smart location for lovers of crawdads. There's something about crawfish that asians (especially Vietnamese) are really drawn to. Weelll, only if they're drowned in yummy seasonings and toilet ripping spices. There's only one flavor offered... that's garlic flavor of course! That seems to be the standard at all asian-owned crawfish joints. Don't wanna offer garlic? Then proprietors better be ready to sit around and listen to the sweet melody of crickets chirping. Here, you order over the counter. All corn, sausage and potatoes are sold separately. They're pretty expensive compared to the other establishments. Corn is .75 cents, potato is 3/ $1.50, and sausage is .99 cents. They even sell wings, crabs and other sides like sweet potato fries. Crawfish is $5.99/lb on 5/7/11. There's a mix of small to jumbo. And of course, there's a whole lot more of the crawbabies than that of the crawdaddies. Two other things worth noting... (1) When my bag of crawfish came out, it appeared to be more like 3lbs, rather than the 5lbs I ordered. Now I've ate lots of crawfish over the years, I know what 5lbs look like. This was not 5lbs. They threw the potatoes, corn and sausage in the bag and then probably weighed it. I'm sitting there thinking, are they trying to gyp me? I asked the girl behind the counter if she had weighed the entire contents all together. She said that our crawfish was weighed separately, then the other stuff was thrown in. She claims it was indeed 5lbs. I could have asked her to reweigh it. But nah, I didn't want to get all ghetto about it. (2) The other thing was, dead crawfish pieces in the bag. I know I know, they're all dead. What I'm talking about are the bad pieces of crawdads that died prior to seeing the "big lobsta" upstairs. After eating a couple of bad dads... I started counting. There were four more. That's not good at all! I should find no more than two... let alone six or so. It's still crawfish season, c'mon now. One other thing I didn't like were the clumps of spices that were not thoroughly mixed. I would get an uneven distribution of medium to really spicy crawfish. Will I be back, probably not. Definitely does not live up to all of the hype. Do not waste your time in the ridiculously long lines, you will only walk away disappointed that you wasted time to eat mediocre food. I tried all 3 flavors of their oyster offerings, since they let you mix and match. Thank goodness the toppings were actually good, because that's all that were on these shells; the oysters were minuscule. My favorite flavor was the Korean Kimchi, with Japanese Ponzu as a close second, the boyfriend preferred the Thai Chili, to each their own, I highly suggest getting a mix so you can try them all. We got 5 lbs of garlic butter crawfish, these things were tiny, there were a few, yes I said a few, that could pass as Medium at best at other shops. Not only were the critters tiny, but at least a third were dead (I've heard if you gather together your dead ones and bring it up to the counter they will replace them, but they were so lackluster that I opted not to). It says a lot when I don't finish my crawfish, but I gladly ended my meal early and forced the boyfriend to finish the remainder. The crawfish came out as soon as we finished paying, which I guess if you like fast service that is a plus, but to me it just shows that obviously the food is not very fresh, or made to order. One highlight of the meal was the French fries, they were reminiscent of fresh Popeye's fries. Yum. Too bad the portion wasn't that big, since it was the only thing I really liked. I think this place is so popular because it is BYOB, and I see people with coolers full of beers. Dear god, its amazing! I was in town on business and somehow convinced 3 co-workers (who all work at a bank) to lunch. Let me remind you that these were adults, wearing suits. Somehow I convinced them that they should not only go to a cajun vietnamese restaurant, but also walk into a grocery store to do it. I think I almost lost them when they saw some of the t-shirts on the wall but when the food came all was well in the world. To be fair, I was with some great people, but I'm pretty sure that none of them had ever eaten pho before. (I had the crawfish pho which is different enough from other phos that I don't really think I can say how good the pho is... I liked it a lot, but it was definitely different). None the less, they demolished their bowls, we plowed through some chicken wings and crawfish puffs and things seemed fine until the desert came out. I don't know how I missed it in the other reviews but those beignet fries probably changed my life. I think I lost the ability to speak for at least two minutes after the first bite. Now, back home, more than 1k miles away, my heart weeps for the distance between me and those fries. Ok well my heart is probably happy about the distance but my stomach is definitely sad. If you are ever in the area and want to impress friends, even if you aren't hungry, take them here, wow them with the location, and then RUIN THEIR LIVES with the beignet fries. read more

Before I decided to waste more of my time on this place by writing this nasty review, I gave this place 2 chances to redeem itself...fail. I must let the massses know! Gross! I've eaten at almost all of the popular crawfish restaurants in Houston. I literally drive an hour and a half to eat crawfish if I must. And I have crawfish 3-4 times a week during the season. Both of their garlic butter and cajun seasonings suck. It literally tasted like they previously boiled the crawfish, heated it up, then dumped the sauces on there. Enjoy! Horrible service! Owner should really watch out what kind staff he or she is hiring. Very sad because that I used to like them. They have this girl w/ glasses working there, she looks like she is pissed off of something constantly!? N they are asking for extra bucks of extra seasoning now? Their snow crab legs are super small, I would even think they are blue crab legs! I will post a photo compare to snow crab legs I get from a different crawfish restaurant. The crawfish pho is flavorful and spicy. For those under the weather days, the spice in this pho will be a great pick me up. The spicy garlic butter crawfish are fat, juicy, and firm. I might be the first in my friend group to admit it, but on Sunday we went there twice. Yes, you read this correctly--I ate at LA Crawfish TWICE in one day. How did this happen, you ask? My crawfish-loving friend Jenny (NOT Jennifer M. for once!) first invited us around 2pm to get our peel'n'slurp on. The weather was absolutely perfect and put us in the mood, so we went for our first rendezvous since last year. Since initially we went for a "snack," Kyle C. and I split one pound of Cajun (medium) and one pound of garlic (medium) plus an order of seasoned fries. First off, I did NOT know that they will give you bibs! This was a huge plus in my book. While the paper towel rolls and plastic table cloths are nice amenities as well, I feel as though the bibs really make the experience feel as crazy as it looks. After we were set up, we got to chowing down and I suddenly realized that I actually like the garlic a little better than the Cajun. Is that blasphemous to say? Even more surprising was how much the flavor of all the delicious crawfish juice on my fingers contributed to the delicious seasoned fries I was shoving in my mouth. I was trying to wash it all down with a little Tsing Tao (BYOB in a grocery store is a GREAT idea) but there were definitely times where it was clear how much bigger my eyes are than my stomach. After we went home and relaxed, I couldn't stop thinking about how amazing our little snack was. As if reading my mind, my friend Jenny texted me again and asked if it was crazy for us to all go back for dinner. Sadly, I couldn't pass up the opportunity to a) do something ridiculous, and b) eat more crawfish. So we went back. This time, we upped our garlic count since we liked it so much but still got a little Cajun on the side just to make sure we were covering all our bases. Unfortunately they'd run out of the seasoned fries (!!!!) so sweet potato had to do. I tried hard to make them taste just as good by dousing them in sriracha, but I'm telling you, the seasoned fries + Cajun crawfish combo is just something else. It seems like in February the crawfish size ranges from medium to large, but they promised that March would see the more "jumbo" sized ones. Needless to say, we will be back. Oh, and...in case you're wondering what happened when we asked the wait staff if they had recognized us from earlier in the day, they said they hadn't and looked at us in what had to be a combination of absolute disbelief and horror. They asked if we lived nearby. We said no. They said that usually they get people who live nearby in a few times a week, but no one had ever come multiple times in a single day. Love it! LA Crawfish is another gem that Yelp helped me find. Crawfish was a weekly thing for me when I lived in a bigger city but since I moved, I can only get it when I travel. Every time I come to Houston I always have to "get my fix." Anyways Im going to touch on the important parts: Food: I order 3 pounds of crawfish-- 2 lbs garlic butter and 1 lb Cajun. The garlic butter is their signature flavor. It was perfect. The balance between the butter and garlic was balanced. The Cajun was good too, but not as good as the garlic butter. Next time I'll order extra garlic! Also, we ordered "spicy" and it was a bit spicy for my taste. Ill go for medium next time. I still tore it up even with the spice level higher than what I like. I have to say, it tasted a bit overcooked and slightly rubbery but it was still super tasty. The crawfish were big too--longer than my ring finger. Service: Its a self-service kinda place. You order at the counter and pick it up yourself when your named is called. They give you a plastic table cloth and you set your own table. The turnaround time for food is very very fast. It took less than 5 minutes to get our order. Location: The restaurant is located inside the Ranch 99 so parking sucks on the weekends. Can't wait to come back! read more
