The Forager turnover and zucchini and feta quiche
    Wendy K.

I live about a half an hour walk from La Copa and have been wanting to check them out for awhile I have a couple friends that have been here and both loved it. one friend often comes to draw. We had just checked out a new Vietnamese coffee shop in the neighborhood and were looking for something to share to hold us over till a lunch meet up with friends later. What a cute space from the mural outside on the side to the order area seating both inside and outside. Tables out front and a cute patio in the back. I was surprised they weren't more crowded on a Saturday at 10. As we stood trying to decide what to order another customer suggested the Forger turnover so we bought one of those and a slice of the zucchini feta quiche. The Forger was definitely our favorite thank you to the customer that suggested it. Flaky and so full of flavor mushrooms perfectly cooked not too soft. Tye quiche was in the firmer side than I prefer but the crust was made beautifully. Saving the last star for when I can check out the coffee and smoothie menu. Looking at others posts looks like they have tasty homemade soups. I like that the hours are from 7:30am-6:30 pm and will definitely check them out for an early dinner sometime. Prices are reasonable. If the rest of the pastries are as good as The Forger I'll be back often.

    Egg and sausage sandwich

Couldn't quite figure out why everyone is so crazy about this place. A friend brought me here to get coffee and a quick bite before heading on the road. I ordered a mocha, tuna melt, and a breakfast sandwich. The guy working there making coffee and making the food was not wearing a mask. It was also extremely warm inside and he was sweating. Made me a bit uncomfortable. I asked if he had hot sauce and he looked so irritated. He told me there was some around the corner. But because they were only offering to-go, I was confused how I would take any sauce with me since there were no containers... (unless I unwrapped my food and poured the sauce then wrapped it up again). So I asked him for a container and he seemed even more irritated at me. Sheesh... When I got my food, it looked so bland and tasted even worse. The egg in the sandwich was nothing like I've ever had before. It looked microwaved and the yolk was extremely overcooked. Just really dense and weird... Maybe some of the pastries are better tasting. I wouldn't care to come back.

    Tuna Melt

Best tuna melt I ever had at this place. Good coffee too. Reasonable prices. Very welcoming staff and lots of cozy places to sit

Checking out one of two pastry cases (1/13/18)

After finishing an entire book in a warm futon nest, I saw glimmers of blue outside. Best to seize some vitamin D and get some lunch (1/13/18). I decided on La Copa Cafe over on 80th and 24th in Ballard. The Yelp posts were accurate and glad I stopped in. Evidently I had been under a rock since this neighborhood gem has been open and thriving for over a year. It is located next door to Cafe Munir with ample 1 hour street parking. I was drawn in by the pastry cases, great variety with slight imperfections indicated baked onsite. There are also a variety of seating arrangements, front window counter (where I was perched for an hour), another facing the food/bev prep area, another entryway to additional seating. They also host a open mic evening. La Copa has a decent menu of homemade baked goods, soups, sandwiches, and beverages like espresso and smoothies. Clearly a location with established regulars. I ordered a triple cheese grilled sourdough panini sandwich and a cup of chipotle coconut carrot soup. The sammie was a huge melty treat, much heartier than what's at Irwin's in Wallingford. The soup was clearly homemade, spot on delicious, and satisfying. Looks like I have another soup and sandwich spot! The Tim's salt and vinegar potato chips weren't even needed. I forgot some writing materials or my library book, but scored at the sunny front counter window with current copies Bon Appetit, Food and Wine, and Travel and Leisure to thumb through while enjoying lunch. I also had a pleasant conversation with the barista. With the bright inviting vibe, tasty menu offerings, and friendly staff...no surprise why they have very favorable Yelp posts! With all the cafes along NW 24th proximate to Market and all the way up to 80th, La Copa Cafe stands out as a highly recommend spot.

Decent cappuccino, wants a little more foam. CappQuest rating: 7.5/10

The first entry in my pursuit of Seattle's best cappuccino, or "CappQuest"© if you will, brings me to La Copa, a cool, unassuming independent neighborhood cafe, the sort that used to be the norm in Seattle before corporate chain stores ruined the scene. They do everything in house here, from the cookies and cakes to the soups and sandwiches. This is the epitome of the hyper-local DIY food joint I wish there were more of! In a funky old 1930's style building that amazingly hasn't yet been razed to put up yet another condo, La Copa features local artists works on display and for sale, lining the walls. Seating is a mostly spartan affair, little tables and bentwood chairs, but there is a couch and soft chair in the back next to a fake fireplace, if you are lucky enough to grab it. The cappuccino ($3.75) was pretty classic, 1/3 espresso, 1/3 milk, 1/3 foam (see picture). Aesthetically, I would have liked a taller foam cap, but good technique overall. The coffee is from local roaster True North, and is big and nutty, with a nice raw cacao bitterness that would make an excellent mocha or vanilla latte. In the cappuccino, it's not quite sweet enough to really play well with the milk (there's a groovy thing lactose does when it meets the fast-decaying sugars in a fresh espresso shot) and you might need a spoon of sugar to help this medicine go down. CappQuest© rating: 7.5/10. I also ordered their pastrami sandwich ($9.00) which was all that and a bag of chips. Literally. It comes with a bag of chips! It was hot and melty thanks to the panini grill, crisp toasted rye playing very well indeed with gooey provolone and thin-sliced meat. Wonderfully comforting and a good value. Service is excellent, quick and friendly. The space is a bit chilly and drafty on cool days, but it's still worth getting your order to stay, to enjoy the art, jazz music, and atmosphere. Recommended breakfast and lunch stop in North Ballard!

    The breakfast burrito

Delightful Breakfast My son arrived home from an overnight shift this AM and on recommendation from a friend who raves about the. Breakfast sandwich- we walked up to La Copa. A friendly masked greeting began - "Good morning- I just took a brioche pastry with hash brown; sausage, pesto and an egg on top - out of the oven - if your interested...". The breakfast muffin would have to wait. My son ordered the breakfast burrito (can feed 2 easily - or 1 teenager--20 something). A cappuccino and a chai latte. If you walk to the back of the inside dining area through the back spot is a delightful out door hidden garden allowing for social distance dining.

Still a great place to visit a cozy corner local coffee house, I was disappointed that they are closed on Mondays. This place is just so cute and cozy in the fall and winter, I take a drive just to come down here. I usually have Mondays off, so sometimes I like to visit my old neighborhood.

I decided to visit for a weekday lunch on this particular warm sunny day (9/16/24). Golden Gardens on a weekend summer day? Uh, no thanks. Sun & sand in Seattle is like shopping after payday at Costco. Still cringing from PTSD getting twacked by a frisbee. Easy peasy getting a nearby parking spot. Approached the entrance to The Kite Cafe, already folks outside sunning themselves before autumn hits and The Big Dark, lol. Yay, no line and beat any potential lunch rush. Welcoming person behind the counter, one of the owners, I presume. I placed an order for The Sunset: Italian meats, provolone (or can select mozzarella), lettuce, tomato, red onion, oregano, evoo & red wine vinegar. It can be prepped cold or warmed up in a panini grill. I opted for the latter. After a brief wait, I wandered off to a more scenic spot with my well wrapped sammie and napkin. No onsite indoor seating, just a few outdoor seating, concrete areas, and of course, Golden Gardens various picnic benches and tables adjacent to the paved sidewalk and beach. Sandwiches, bowls, salads, beverages, chips, and frozen treats are available for purchase. There's also beach gear available like kites, hats, sunglasses, etc. It was a nice sunny day and thankfully no errant frisbees or pesky seagulls to dodge. The plump pigeons also totally ignored me. Fine, that allowed me to fully focus on this sizeable, generous grilled sandwich. Easily shareable (or not, lol). I appreciated the double butcher paper. One encased the sliced sandwich, the other made for a makeshift tablecloth to catch most of the crumbs and shredded lettuce bits. Delicious and not overly salty from start to finish. Got a bit oily towards the end though. Glad to give it a try as my breakfast/lunch meal today. A bit pricey, with tax & tip just under $21. Paying for the overall quality, for sure. But my budget will have to stick to Jersey Mike's Italian #13. It'll be interesting how they keep or adjust their business hours during the upcoming autumn & winter months. And how they compete with Un Bien, Secret Congee, Ray's, and Anthony's also in Ballard/Shilshoe. (Edit - they posted their off season hours on 9/22/24. Closed Mon - Thurs, open only Fri, Sat & Sun) 4.5 stars rounded up to 5 for this first visit.
