I visited with establishment for the first time yesterday. My order wasn't taken correctly, but I pride myself on being a patient person. I didn't get my complete order until more than an hour later. From the photos and the reviews I was hoping the food would be worth the wait. No chance, I ordered take out and the first thing I tasted was the tostones. No taste whatsoever, I ordered two Acapurrios and they were over loaded with salt. I ordered a beef steak and rice meal, and a chicken and rice meal. The only thing I liked was the yellow rice and red beans. The rest wasn't worth the money. This place provides a great experience with friends, family and/or loved ones. The waitstaff is very attentive from the moment you walk through the door. The ambience is wonderful if you're in a mood for lively salsa and merengue AND the food is great. For an appetizer we ordered the Picadera platter while great on portion size and variety had overlooked sausage and bacon wrapped cocktail sausages. The tostones and carnitas more than made up for it. I ordered the mofongo with bistek encebollado was finger licking good! Ordered a serious sampling for takeout and was not disappointed. I'm from the tri-state area and consider myself a mofongo connoisseur, so I did not take this order lightly. Portions are big and everything looks real good. It was my first time trying mofongo and it was quite tasty. I ordered the bistec con abichuela, my boyfriend had the mofongo de chicharon and we ordered a side of tostones. Regarding the food, the only thing I could say it that the steak was real big and I would have preferred if it were charred a bit. The actual restaurant had a bar/night club feel so that was a tad confusing but over all the staff were great to us. My husband ended up with food poisoning! The food looks good on the TVs they have scrolling through the menu options but it's very much lacking. I got carne asada that was very much over cooked. My plantains were burned. My son ordered fried chicken and it was not what anyone at the table expected. The drinks come in cans. And they charge you per can. No soda fountain. And it took over an hour for us to get food. The had several empty tables so it's not like it was a full house. The waiter was more worried about whatever at the bar. So I order mofongo with shrimp and garlic sauce and house salad. My total came to $20.12. I ran across the street to go to the CVS because I was ordering takeout. I came back about 15 minutes later and my food was ready. I grabbed it and gave the bartender a tip. Got home about 20 minutes later and realized there was no salad in the bag so I can't review that. the mofongo was dry with dry pieces of meat. The sauce was good but desperately needed salt and pepper. The shrimp were big and delicious. It's also a good portion. I still feel like it needs a salad to pull it together plus some other kind of creamier sauce. Like a salad dressing. I wouldn't order the mofongo again, it's just not delicious enough for the price tag. Parking there is also horrible. We had the trifongo and camarones today which were delicious and we added Lobster to the mix because it is my husband's birthday after all! Be Fed. Mufongo." Unfortunately, the heavenly magic pretty much stopped there. We walked in greeted by a giant, jovial dude who sat us up front. Among the 20... I'm not even exaggerating... or so tv's, we spied out the waitresses busily.... well, busily doing anything but waitressing. 10 minutes pass. Nothing... 15 minutes. I'm only comforted by the sounds of my stomach softly grumbling in contrast to the spanish soaps playing all around. 20 minute... yeah, I set the timer. 10 minutes longer and if no one farts in our general direction, we're out. Low-and-be-hold, a Casa Del Mofongo's customer service struck once again... not even a "gracias" thrown in our direction for thirty-pain-stakingly-hungry-minutes. I would have told them that they had terrible customer service and tableside manor, but they never came to the table ... not once. I've been trying to find a good Latin restaurant in Maryland for a few years now. This is NOT it. I was born and raised in Puerto Rico, so I know what a fancy AND a chinchorro mofongo looks and tastes. The mofongos offered at this place fall short of everything. The caldo (broth) is tasteless. The mofongo was close to being tasteless. It had chicharron (pork rinds), but it also had pork meat in the middle, which was hard, almost old meat. NOT what I expected. The white rice was bland and the red beans lacked flavor. Las chuletas (fired pork chops) was hard, over dry, over cooked, greasy and tasteless. I could not stick a fork in them. In addition, the shrimp where not de-veined. The alcapurrias were greasy and the meat inside was bland. I did not bother with desert. If the main dishes where that horrible, I wasn't going to waste money on their overpriced flan ($4) and tres leches ($5). Deserts where on display, so I could see that the portion was not proportional to the high price. Everything on the menu was overpriced. I understand that some of the ingredients for these dishes are hard to find in MD, but the portion sizes where to small for the price. Parking was ridiculous. A small strip in the front of the restaurant, that was difficult to get into and exit. People don't know how to park, so most of the spaces where wasted. The parking lot next to the building doesn't have enough spaces for the demand of the area. We went on a Saturday, so parking was free, but during the week, all the spaces have a parking meter. To complete my experience, I had indigestion right before the bill came, so the "food" I ate, went right down their own toilet. I was very disappointed in this place. Being born and raised in the Caribbean eating all types of mofongo imaginable, I can say this is the WORST MOFONGO I have ever had the disgrace of trying. I was ill for the rest of the night. The food is wonderful, totally legitimate home cooking dominicano. We've had mofongo, sancocho, and the lunch menu with costillas. Great. The servers are really nice, very attentive and professional. I believe they all speak English, so don't hesitate if you are not a Spanish speaker. The exterior is really not attractive, but inside it is clean, spacious, and just very nice. I visited with a friend who's from Puerto Rico, ostensibly looking for good Puerto Rican fare. Although it was pretty late (past 10 pm), we were welcomed warmly and seated promptly. The service here is great! Our waiter was very nice and outgoing. He even showed us photos of his recent trip to Puerto Rico! The menu is extensive. I wasn't that hungry so I ordered a pastel de pollo and an order of tostones. My friend ordered arroz con gandules and the chicharrones de pollo. Something to note - although the restaurant is Puerto Rican-owned, much of food is prepared Dominican-style due to the kitchen staff. And yes, there is a difference. They were happy to make some tweaks to my friend's liking. We both enjoyed the food, which was served in pretty large portions, and the check came to about $25 for the two of us. We still daydream about our trip to Puerto Rico -- La Isla del Encanto -- so we were psyched to see La Casa del Mofongo open in our neighborhood. On our first visit, we ordered Pollo Guisado, Tostones, and Tamarindo to go. The servers were super friendly and the service was quick. The chicken was DELICIOUS....so soft and juicy it fell off the bone. The tostones were nicely fried - but we could have used some hot sauce. The tamarind drink was tart, but way too sweet. I hope they ease up on the sugar from now on. On our second visit, I ordered the Mofongo de Camarones, my husband ordered the Chicharron with rice and beans, and we ordered Tostones to share. The mofongo was great -- rich, dense, salty and garlicky, perfectly balanced by a light tomato sauce and a lettuce garnish. The shrimps were a bit overcooked, but still tasty. Unfortunately, the pork was uneven - some of it was tasty and tender, some of it overcooked and dry. My husband made it through part of his mountain of rice, and we had fun dipping our tostones in the beans. The decor is elegant yet comfortable. The bright orange and red walls are a nice complement to the dark wood of the tables, chairs and bar. Great place for a family event, a night out with friends, or a date. I really wanted to like this place... But was disappointed. I ordered the pork mofongo and although the pork was very good, the plantain itself lacked taste. With mofongo if you get a good side sauce you are golden. The sauce should be a little thick in consistency. This was not the case here. The sauce was more like water and it was lacking in taste. I had also ordered the bistec encebollado and that was also lacking in taste. The steak came out in a sauce that looked and tasted like it had been thickened in cornstarch. Gross. I gave this place 2 stars because the chinola juice and the morir soñando were actually pretty good. Maybe I'm just used to Caridad restaurants up in NYC. What they have posted online is only a fraction of their entire offerings. I got the chicarron mofongo to go. It was delicious! You get plenty of fried pork belly goodness with tan perfect amount of crispy skin and fatty, salty satisfaction. You even get some of the porkiness mixed into the mofongo itself. Unfortunately whole tasty the mofongo was on the dry side. It could be a difference between to go vs dine in so I wouldn't discount that with my assessment. I didn't care for the coconut dessert they had. This macaroon like dessert was too sweet for me. If the rest of their offerings are as good as what I had, I'll definitely return to eat my way through this menu. read more

Being P.Rican, I was SO excited to see the sign that said "Casa Del Mofongo"!!!!! I've been waiting for a place like this to open in MD. I decided to stop by today and try out the Mofongo de Pollo. Boy, was I disappointed :-( The shredded chicken mixed with the monfongo over powered it, I couldn't taste the flavor of the mofongo!!! It was a bit dry (too) and the fried chicken pieces that came on the side was pure fat, hardly any meat. I put the red sauce on top to see if will change the taste, nope. I wish this place luck, but they need to change the name to "Comida Del Caribe", because people are going to assume that the mofongo is top notch; but isn't. It's not worth the $13 bucks I paid for w/out a drink. I will be planning a trip to New York to find a place that truly knows how to make Mofongo de Puerto Rico/Caribe. read more

We rate Casa del Mofongo 'great' for delicious comfort food that's difficult to find in the DMV... Big platter of appetizers Picadera Familiar seems pricey for an appetizer ($17), but is so generous with tostones and chicharron that we often have leftovers with 3-4 diners. We also love Pulpo Salad when available. Mondongo soup is also a fave. Of course they also have Presidente and Medalla beers... Down home, genuine atmosphere. The food here is absolutely amazing! My favorite I getting the family size appetizer to share, which really serves as a meal for two. Oh and the passion fruit juice is to die for.
