    Tripleta Sandwich
    Hilary T.

Got the chance to try this food truck at Wheatland Spring today and glad we did! They had great veggie empanadas that were perfectly fried, crispy and crunchy on the outside, but tender and well cooked veggie medley inside (mushrooms, eggplant, onions, red peppers, zucchini, and yellow squash, all very finely diced and cooked in tomato sauce). It was one of the best vegetarian empanadas we've had. (Note: the pizza empanadas are vegetarian, too, and looked/smelled great.) We tried all the sauces with them and particularly loved the pique (peppery but not too hot) and the Mayo/ketchup blend (the mojo was good, too). I also got the Tripleta sandwich because I couldn't pass up the combo of skirt steak, roasted pork and ham. I'm also a sucker for any dish that incorporates chips, and the potato sticks on top here were too intriguing to pass up. This sandwich was huge and tasted and smelled great, full of well-seasoned and cooked meats and the crunch from the potato sticks. The bread held its own for awhile, but I definitely needed a fork to finish up (did I have one? No, but that didn't stop me because I'm not particularly classy.) Definitely worth checking this truck out!

I love Borinquen Lunch Box. My friend says it's the best Puerto Rican food you will get in this area, as it is something that is noticeably missing from our diverse food scene. Their empanadas (pastelitos, really) are super crispy and delicious. I love the tostones with mojo sauce, which is super garlicky. The bacalao with rice and beans is huge and filling. The fish is super fresh and well-seasoned. You can pre-order pasteles during the holidays. I wish they came into DC more, but I try to catch them at Port City whenever I get a craving.

Borinquen Food Truck! Boriquen is a sector of Puerto Rico... did ya know? Google did! This food truck happened to be at the Curbside Cookoff that happened this past weekend in Wheaton MD. What did I get from this busy truck operation. I got two empanadas- one chicken - one beef and something called an alcapurria. The empanadas were both delicious. I just wish that some sort of salsa were to be served with the. Just a little something fresh ( maybe a slaw). The alcapurria was surely my favorite thing. A plantain wrapped around a mixture of spiced beef and delicious. Man was this good! I've never encountered such a thing. I didn't really taste the plantain. I tasted a delicious mildly chewy coating around a vibrant mixture of meat and spices. SO GOOD! I would definitely hit this place up again.

My wife saw and grabbed the Trio Empanada's while I was at appointment. We shared the Beef and Chicken and were hooked, I preferred the Beef so Yes, I stood in line and got three more !!! Totally enjoyed the taste, Wife loved the light and crisp shell and I loved it all. Enjoyed our conversation with the owner and look forward to following on FB and around town. Delicious food and Friendly People - Great Combination !!!

Yayyyyyy....Felt like home :) I'm a happy camper. I graduated from culinary school and I'm critical specially of food from my country but the food here is very good and the owner is super nice. My hubby and I enjoyed it a lot. My favorite was the yuca alcapurria and the arroz con gandules tasted like "navidad boricua" AKA Puerto Rican Christmas. Tostones were good and fresh with the mayoketchup. Very proud Ps. Witness the owner giving food to a homeless guy and that shows his heart. He didn't know I would include it here but those are the true heroes among us...Sigue como eres Boricua

Food is delicious. The bacalao guisado amazing. Paired excellently with plátano maduro to give savory and sweet boldness. Came with a heaping amount of yellow rice and beans. The amount of bacalao is good. Also tried the chicken empanada which was really good. Pizza was okay. Cuban sandwich was good as well. I accidentally deleted photo of bacalao but if they offering get it.

I was super excited when I saw that there's be a new food truck in my area (Fairfax). I ordered the Cubano because I've been dying to have a Cuban sandwich and let me just say this was B-O-M-B!!! The bread was a bit flaky on the outside and soft on the inside. The pork melted in your mouth and with the combination of mustard, cheese, and pickles it was amazing. I hear they're going to be at Taste of DC; I may just have to stop by again. Please put willow Oaks on your schedule regularly!!!

Beef, chicken, & veggie empanada and tripletas sandwich aka triple meat: roast pork, diced ham, skirt steak
    Annie T.

Wow I am impressed. I got the Tripletas Sandwich aka Triple Meat Sandwich. It had roasted pork, diced ham, skirt steak, potato sticks w/ a mayo/ketchup sauce on a soft bun. It was the size of a Chipotle burrito. Man it had good flavors. I loved the seasoning. I asked for the sauce on the side and I liked pouring it on a little at a time so the bread wouldn't get soggy. I thought I would get sick of eating it since it was so much meat, but no I happily ate it all. My coworker ordered the 3 empanadas, trying each flavor out; beef, chicken, and veggie. I think she liked the beef the best. I tried a piece and it also had good flavors and was nice and crispy. My coworker did say she wished it came with a Chimichurri sauce or something to dip. She also got the watermelon lemonade and that was delicious, a little on the sweet side, but easily fixed by adding a little water to it. The Tripletas Sanwich was $9.50 and I wish it came with a little side of some sort. Overall I was happy and I would love to eat it again.

They have an excellent Cuban sandwich. The ham, pork, swiss cheese, and mustard are pressed in fresh bread. The sandwich isn't greasy and uses top quality ham/pork, no cheap lunch meat here. Have one of these for lunch and you'll be happy and full, good luck trying to stay awake in that boring afternoon meeting.

Tripletas-diced ham, roasted pork, skirt steak with potato sticks and signature mayo/ketchup mix served on pan sobao- that's 1/2

I wanted to update my review after trying multiple items from here now. I had half of the cuban sandwich and half of the tripletas sandwich and both of these were fantastic! The cuban was not greasy at all and had a nice mixture of flavorful roasted pork and ham on it in addition to swiss, mustard, and pickles. The sandwich was HUGE for $9.50 and I was full after only half. However, I was quite intrigued by the tripletas, roasted pork, skirt steak, and diced ham topped with potato sticks and a spicy signature sauce, that I just couldn't stop at the cuban! My preference goes to the Cuban as the tripletas just felt very heavy but tastewise, it was just as flavorful as the Cuban. Service was friendly although it did take some time to receive our food. I would certainly eat here again in the future.

Just came back from a feast from Borinquen lunch box. Being Puertorican, Borinquen lunch box is a little gem that reminds me of some of the most delicious flavors from home. They have a daily special that you can check on their facebook or Twitter account. However, I wanted to try the "classics" so I went for the alcapurria (fried green plantain stuffed with beef "picadillo"). It's definitely a Puertorican classic! I also had the beef empanadilla and I loved how light and crispy the batter was. Finally I had the tripleta. The Tripleta sandwich is a street food/late night sandwich in Puerto Rico. You can find it on food trucks all over the Island. Its a delicious big sandwich stuffed with diced ham, pork and skirt steak. It also has potatoes sticks and mayo ketchup sauce which is a mayo and ketchup and garlic sauce traditionally used in PR. Borinquen lunch box does an Amazing job bringing the Tripleta to life. The bread is called "pan sobao" and its a sweet lard puertorican bread. I asked the owners of the truck where they get it and he said he makes it, which makes the tripleta that much tastier. I will definitely go back to try their specials! This food truck is a MUST.

After moving the location, this place is now where they can proudly call home and boy did they make it look beautiful. The location is a bit small so incoming crowds had to wait outside until their time arrived, not the best in the cold weather. However, service was fantastic, very pleasant and lively staff. Shoutout to our waitress Jaime! Drinks: I didn't get any of their cocktails but instead enjoyed my traditional vodka soda. Appetizer: there were several appetizers on the table but I only had the Bacalaitos (not pictured) which was a little too salty for me. Main Dish: it's safe to say that I'm not the best judge when it comes to what makes a great Mofongo. But, having indulged in Mofongo from a local spot in Puerto Rico, I have a little understanding of which flavor profiles must be in the dish. This dish, had those profiles!!!!! It was so delicious and too good to not finish off-ate all of it LOL. The shrimp on top was also a winner, perfectly prepared and well seasoned. No dessert at the end just lots of laughs and good vibes. But overall everyone thoroughly enjoyed their dishes and the variety of options on the menu. It was safe for vegans, vegetarians, pescatarians, and the meat eaters. We all enjoyed! Note that they are good at keeping groups on time with table use so FYI in case you want to support but have late folks who like to stroll in at odd hours. Best to keep your party on time!!! Overall, I will be back to try another dish and simply support.

The dark warm mood lighting, the corrugated wall, the intimate seating, and of course the small share plates makes for the sexy experience tapas is suppose to be! It is typical of Spanish flavors, heavily relying on high-end cured meats and cheeses, and classics such as croquetas. There is something very special that goes into tapas because its suppose to satisfy you based on good taste over quantity. Large shrimp in a generous skillet of olive oil and slow cooked garlic slices and a iberico mac and cheese are some examples of how they elevate classics we are familiar with. We really liked that they learned into garlic and spice. We found dried Aji Caballero in our meal, great attention to source country. They have a very robust and generous drinks menu. Loved watching others not dining alone and embracing that share quality of the menu design. Perhaps it is not the best tapas I had, I would have liked to see a balance with lighter citrus flavors but maybe that was an ordering issue. At some point, since the menu heavily leans towards rich and decadent, its better to plan around that. Our waitress was amazing, she explained the questions we had on the ingredients and was on it with the refills.

Started off with the "Taste of Spain" which included Pan con tomate, Aged manchego, Jamón Ibérico de bellota, and Boquerones con naranja. Since I couldn't eat the latter two, the server said they could double the first two, which was so appreciated. For my first course, I chose the Escalivada (fire-roasted eggplant, red pepper, labne yogurt, fresh herbs, olive oil, served with focaccia) and Croquetas de setas (creamy mushroom croquettes with truffle aioli). The Escalivada was tasty, but more on the tangy side; the bread was more crostini-like than focaccia. The Croquetas were so good: creamy, savory, umami inside and crunchy outside. Next, I got the Zanahorias (spiced baby carrots, sweet and sour reduction, orange honey yogurt, mojo verde, Marcona almonds) and Patatas bravas (crispy potatoes, salsa brava, pimentón, garlic aioli). When I tell you those carrots had me dreaming about them later, I'm not kidding- all of the different flavor combos paired with the perfectly cooked carrots were amazing. The Patatas bravas was pretty classic- crispy potatoes with creamy aioli and tangy tomato sauce. Finally, for dessert, I had the Tarta de naranja (orange olive oil cake, citrus-honey yogurt), and my friend had the Tarta vasca de chocolate (Basque chocolate cheesecake, macerated strawberries, chantilly cream). Both were tasty, but the Tarta de naranja was so good: perfectly dense cake, refreshing citrus, and great contrast with the yogurt. For my drink, I got the Forget-Me-Not refrescante (butterfly pea flower, thyme, honey, lime, ginger beer). Very interesting drink, not sure I'd order again but it was good. Service was great, super willing to accommodate my vegetarian dietary restrictions. Ambiance is really nice, very modern and elegant. I did not like the patatas... sauce was good but the potato itself had none of its own seasoning and was tough. Yes crispy but not pillowy inside. The octopus was delicious and super tender.
