02.04.23 Birthday Brunch for my husband
Unexpectedly discovered this cool spot in Whittier off the Main Street prior to the celebration. My husband and I walked past it and I was curious to check it out. So we stopped in to get some info. My first impression was a super tiny butcher shop that sold premium cuts of meat and craft beer. Little did I know, it was so much more. The hostess mentioned that it's a modern take of a "speak easy" restaurant and they offer their homemade craft beers. I thought that was a cool concept and my husband and I made it a point to come back. Fast forward to his birthday brunch..
We invited a couple family members to join us and help celebrate my husband's birthday. It was also their first time. I do have to mention that a "reservation" is strongly recommended during peak hours. The restaurant is quite cozy and can only seat 77 guests. We arrived before dinner, however I did make a reservation to be in the safe side. I love the concept of walking through a freezer door and it opens up to a cozy bar on the right and tables and booth to the left. It boasts a modern pub vibe but very clean and somehow fit for a small or large party.
We were seated right away and served with cold, fresh water. You can access the menu by scanning the QR code, however my aunt & uncle are old school and asked for a physical menu. The menu featured a variety of Mexican dishes with a twist of premium cuts of meat. They do also offer a couple seafood dishes and salads. My uncle likes to drink so he took a look at the wine and beer menu. There was quite a selection so we asked the server to recommend a few dishes. We also looked over other tables to see what they were ordering.
We decided to order a few dishes to share and my uncle tried a craft beer sampler that offered four different 4oz craft beers.
Here is our spread:
- Bodega Fries - a version of asada fries. The fries come with premium cuts of diced flat iron steak, Monterey Jack cheese, refried beans, Pico de gallo and jalapeños.
- Bodega Burger- Japanese Wagyu and USDA Prime beef blend, cheddar cheese, lettuce, tomato, onion topped with a garlic aioli on a brioche bun.
- Pan Seared Branzino - Crispy skin sea bass, roasted potatoes, cherry tomatoes, onion, chicken fashioned soffits, burnt garlic oil, chives and lime.
- El Comal - Shareable dish that feeds 2-3 people. It comes with marinated grill chicken, Tristar angus skirt, pork adobado served with homemade salsa and corn tortillas.
Our appetizer, Bodega Fries, was served first. The fries were seasoned well and the texture was crisp to perfection. The meat was flavorful and cooked just right, not dry. As we devoured the appetizer, we were advised by our waiter that our main dishes will take a little bit longer. They disclosed that they have many orders, but they have a small kitchen. The manager came out to note that they are pushing our orders as quickly as they can but they don't want to jeopardize the quality of their food. Since we weren't in a rush, it was not a problem for us.
My daughter's Bodega Burger came out next and it was quite a big burger. For $16.00 is was enough for two to share and my daughter was nice enough to share. All agreed that it was flavorful, juicy and the brioche bread tied it all together.
My uncle had the Pan Seared Branzino. The sauce was delicious. The skin was light and crispy and the fish was cooked perfectly. Great savory flavor with a hint of citrus. The potatoes had a hearty creamy texture with sweet cherry tomatoes.
We all shared the El Comal. It was served on a hot platter with homemade salsa and tortillas. The meats were sizzling hot, the tortillas were warm. I have to mention that we were served with flour tortillas and the manager mentioned that the corn tortillas are being made and they would bring some out when they were done. The corn tortillas were "to die" for. It was so fresh and tasty, we had to ask for more. I can totally tastes the difference.
Everything was soooo good. It's not your typical hole in the wall Mexican restaurant. They do try to elevate the quality of their dishes. My uncle mentioned to the manager that it was my husband birthday, so they offered a complimentary cake & ice cream. Very unexpected, but a kind gesture and great way to end our meal.
Overall, it was a great first time experience and we are definitely coming back. Some things to note, they are open late Friday and Saturday (which are peak hours) and they enforce a 90 minute limit for dining so they can service as many guests as they can. Also, they offer a brunch menu on Saturday & Sunday that we would like to experience. From the outside you can see their brewery, which I thought was cool. I do have to say that I don't drink beer, but the food was great. If you love beer you should try this place. Hope my review gives you an insight of what to expect when visiting this hidden gem!
