Oh Spike Lee... You can kiss my Olive Colored butt. I traveled from Lawg Island to Bed-Stuy so I may enjoy a meal for French Restaurant week. I can only hope they open 20 more great restaurants of this caliber in Bed-Stuy. Enough of the pleasantries, lets get the review of L'Antagoniste Yacht rockin'! We find parking right next to the restaurant. I read about L'Antagoniste and I decided it sounds like a great place to take my Brooklyn-French Canadian wife for our anniversary. Walking in (Look for the red door) its a very country French looking space. To the right is about 7 seats next to an open kitchen along with a hidden table. To the left is a nice looking space with exposed brick walls and hip pictures. Our waitress says would you like to sit outside? I was about to say no but wife wife said sure! Once outside, it's a secret garden patio. What makes me laugh and my grandfather would crack up, this outdoor "area" was someones backyard 50 years ago! I can hear that conversation in my mind: Gramps, we're in Bed-Stuy because of the hipsters and they're taking over Brooklyn. Can you charge to let them eat in our alley?? Soon gramps soon. haha It's French restaurant week so there is a special price fixed menu. A glass of outrageous French wine, starter salad with Duck Confit and dessert. Wowza! The Duck confit? Classic French dish that was cooked spot on. Fall of the bone duck wth baby roasted vegetables, They were right to call this place one of the hottest restaurants for 2016. We finished our dinner and now comes dessert. There is a choice of ice cream or sorbet. The waiter is rattling off flavors but I latch onto caramel, hazelnut and pear sorbet. My wife jumps on the hazelnut and it was a toss up between the pear & caramel. The dessert comes out and my wife is stomping her feet. The hazelnut is soooooo good! I always order the wrong thing, dang! She let me taste it and its true. The hazelnut wasn't made from nutella, it was made with roasted hazelnuts. Amazing ending I'm assuming it was the owner, everyone came out and spoke with us. I told them we came out from Stony Brook for not only restaurant week but for our anniversary. A corner location on a rough stretch of Malcolm X Blvd. it's a friendly French spot with food that's worth the trip and it is one. Ate: Bien Cuit Bread Branzino with Buerre Rouge, fennel & charred eggplant $27 Drank: White from Oregon $7 I opted not to get the happy hour three course meal for $35 as the branzino sounded so amazing. The Branzino was perfection personified. The puréed eggplant and tasty fennel with lick the plate Buerre Rouge was dynamite! It went well with the nice wine. Everything here is outstanding. It's our go-to date night spot when we can get a babysitter and also a perfect place for a family meal. The staff and owner are kind and attentive and of course, the food is delicious. Also, given the quality of the food, the prices are very reasonable. We always leave feeling satisfied. My husband loves the burger and my personal favorite is the duck breast. My toddler will sneak bites of everyone's food. Dinner and brunch are both great (plus fondue in the winter!). read more

This is a very cute restaurant that apparently has been around for a while. I happen upon it gracias to Yelp. Looks like a neighborhood spot you can go to for a nice dinner and good wine. I went there for a quick meal on a weeknight, I was heading elsewhere for cocktails but I wanted to eat a little something first. Make reservations just in case​ you get there and they are booked. It's not super tiny but I can imagine on a Fri or wknd night, you may not be seated right away. I would def say it's a date spot as well. At least if a date bought me here, it would feel like an appropriate choice. I visited during the wk, got there right after they opened so it was easy breezy for me to snatch a seat by the bar. Soup of the day was butternut squash and I also had the mussels +wine. Overall I had a great meal, and a great bar person to have a conversation with during my meal. The food is okay. What is problematic is the racist staff. I went in there several times with business people and spent a lot of money. there is a server who was VERY rude to me and my friend. I made a complaint to the manager and the actual server wrote me back (not the manager) the rudest email saying i'm calling her a racist. I'm confused .. if you act racist then you're racist. If you have problems serving people of color then you're racist. I was stunned that she sent me an email. Also she did not say, "I'm sorry if you felt the service was bad" she actually cursed me out, the customer. I later found out from other black people that they have also had poor experiences in there. read more

As it was my first time visiting Brooklyn, I did some thorough research and chose to have dinner at this restaurant, with no regrets. My mother and I decided to come here because of the generous sizing of the foie gras appetizer, which did not fail our expectations. It was my first time having foie gras, and it was really deep and because more delicious with every bite and paired so well with the apricots! We also had the cheese souffle appetizer, (Please get it!!) which came with gorgonzola ice-cream. You eat this by making a hole in the souffle, and eating it with the ice-cream, creating a heavenly mix of sweet and salty. For our entrees, we had the bouillabaisse and duck. The duck didn't blow me away, but was still good and rich. The bouillabaisse was amazing, especially the soup paired with the bread and dip it comes with. For dessert, we had some sorbets, which they make in house! I loved the atmosphere and the service as well. We sat outside in the back, which was like a garden. Our waitress was so kind and patient in explaining everything on the menu and how to best enjoy the meal! If you're visiting Brooklyn and want some really nice French cuisine that isn't too heavy, I would recommend this place. I would definitely make the trip from Manhattan here again! read more

Honestly this place was a big let-down. Ordered steak tartare, fish and chips, and steak frites. Got the creme brulee and chocolate mousse to-go, because it was going to rain. Two drinks, one for each of us. Steak tartare was inedible, I think the meat was expired. I've had this many times all over the world, this was by far the worst. Steak frites was super undercooked, asked them to cook it a bit more, and then it was fine, but super bland. Fish and chips was good, but it's deep fried so i guess it's hard to mess up. Desserts were both extremely small, definitely not worth the price. Creme brulee was pure liquid, inedible. Chocolate mousse wasn't a mousse, it was like a cake or brownie, but it was good. Service was good, waiter was friendly. Drinks were good but not having liquor (only wine and beer) is kind of BS. If I'm going to spend $150 on dinner for two you can afford a liquor license. I've been trying to eat here since stumbling upon L'Antagoniste on one of my morning runs, but it's quite a popular spot and weekends mean its generally packed. As luck should have it, we waltzed in at 7:30pm sans reservations and got a table right away (maybe the current freezing temps have something to do with that). The space is fragrant with all sorts of delicious smelling aromas. I wasn't even that hungry but the scents elicited my tastebuds and I found my mouth watering lol. I loved the dim lighting, background music and overall decor and ambiance, its the perfect date night spot. The cream of mushroom soup was perfect especially on such a cold evening. I opted for the mussels as an entree and was quite surprised at how large a serving I received, it also came with a side of French fries which I thoroughly enjoyed. The white wine reduction was flavorful, a bit savory and oh so satisfying. The hamburger was a work of art with literally all the fixings, packed with flavor and juicy at every bite. Oh! Forgot to mention, there were happy hour wines and beer! $7 per glass of wine if memory serves me correctly. Cant wait to go back for brunch! read more

Wow, this place is absolutely amazing. We came here for brunch on a Saturday morning and found that it was strangely empty. The inside has really interesting decor. Being that it is a French restaurant, I was kind of surprised that the atmosphere was more casual than its menu led on. We ordered the eggs Benedict and the duck hash with duck egg. The eggs Benedict was really good. I think I had to tell myself to look past the fact that the hollandaise sauce was pink instead of yellow, but it was truly delicious. The duck hash was really good. It was tasty and flavorful, and kept me full for the rest of the day. The service was impeccable. Our waiter did a great job with addressing any concerns we had with the menu. My sister and I ordered the steak tartare which was a generous portion, fresh, very, tasty, with a beautiful egg on top and just minced to the right size. We also ordered the muscles and fries and that was remarkably tasty. (I just realized this review was in draft mode and so I'm coming back to finish it. I was going to give a glowing 5 stars but read on to understand why I'm giving it four. My first visit was five stars, my second visit was 2-3 stars at best). I went back to the restaurant to bring my other sister because I had such a good experience here on December 30th, 2019. However, when I came back I was very disappointed. The fries were soft, the muscles weren't nearly as tasty (and were served in the wrong bowl, making it hard to fish around for the sauce on the bottom), the tartare just wasn't the same the second time around, and the service was not good the second time - the server hardly came back to check on us - and it was not busy at all. MUST have been a different chef the first time I went. I'd had this place bookmarked for a while. Finally, a friend suggested we have dinner here for our birthdays, so I immediately said yes. I'm glad I did! L'antogoniste is a cool, cozy, clearly french inspired hideout on Malcolm X Avenue. Right across from a Crown Fried Chicken, for complete Brooklyn authenticity, which I love! We both ordered the happy hour red (a blend of grenache and syrah, which was just $5 a glass and delicious), and went right to the entrée, even though the restaurant has an awesome prix-fixe happy hour deal that comes with app, entrée and dessert for less than $40; we just weren't that hungry. For our meals, we both chose the Steak Frites. OMG! Best choice ever. The steak was perfectly cooked, expertly seasoned, and huge! The fries were also perfect, and tasty when dipped in the dijon mustard. So one doesn't feel completely guilty, there's also a salad on the plate, which is good as well but just not steak...or fries. My friend ate everything on her plate. I was too stuffed, and left about a quarter of the steak, half of the salad, and 5 fries, though I missed all of it when I got home. Really had a lovely time dining at the bar tonight with my boyfriend. We started with the steak tartare (so good!) and I got the Duck and he got the Salmon. Really enjoyed everything. Also, the bread they give you is hella awesome. This is the perfect date night spot. Heck, I might turn it into my "I need a snack and glass of wine" spot. I've been here for weekend brunch and it's nice to have some elevated food in a beautiful space with warm, no frills hospitality. Came here with my brother and sister for brunch today after walking past this place for over two years. We were incredibly excited and extremely let down. To say this was the worst brunch, possibly one of the worst meals we have ever had is not an exaggeration. First of all, we waited at least twenty minutes just for our coffees to come. Our server explained that he had trouble with the espresso machine (as they do not have any regular coffee) and we let it go. However, we ended up waiting about an hour for our food to come as well. I can forgive slow service when a restaurant is extremely busy, but we were one of maybe four parties in the place. On top of the incredibly slow service, the food was practically inedible when it arrived. It had all clearly been waiting for some time and thrown in the microwave so it wasn't cold, but that meant my brother's omlet had a rubber consistency. My sister's quiche was also burnt, and my french toast was barely edible and the poached pear on top tasted completely rancid. We are not ones to complain when we go to a restaurant, so even though we only took a few bites of our food, we paid our bill and left (also, our server seemed completely oblivious to the fact that we were unhappy but that's perhaps a separate issue). However, as we walked home we noticed that we all started to feel sick as well. I cannot recommend anyone try this restaurant, and frankly do not understand how they have remained in business. The food is good here--if "good" means spectacular--and if you've read the other, very accurate Yelp reviews about this first really amazing French restaurant in Bed-Stuy, you've read that some of it is better than the food you'd get in Paris. The stunning seared foie gras, the salmon, and the two glasses of Sauvignon Blanc instead of dessert during my most recent meal were ridiculously fabulous. The seared foie gras, served with stewed apples, is a smokey, almost bacony, rich but not heavy, caramelized thing of perfection. The salmon, perfectly cooked rare, swam in a flavorful cream sauce. Taste- and picture-perfect! My bf shared his meat and cheese plate, and raved about his steak frites and a raspberry beer that didn't taste anything like beer. A win for the both of us. I liked "helping" him drink them as much I could. On other visits I've had the cheese soufflé, the oysters, the duck a l'orange, the paris brest and the apple tart. All were satisfying, memorable, well-executed and left me wanting more. It may have taken me about five different occasions to accept and savor the level of cuisine that is L'Antagoniste. Poor moi. But now I can truly say with complete confidence that this unusual for Malcolm X blvd, quaint but upscale restaurant is Saturday-date-night-worthy and then some. First time I came to L'Antagoniste I got the burger and it was phenomenal. I would daydream about it, the beef tasted fresh and all the ingredients inside seemed to melt into each other perfectly. The restaurant itself was fairly empty but really cute so I didn't know why there wasn't more patrons inside. The second time I came, it was a complete 180. They were just cleaning up from an event so we waited and had a drink at the bar which was nice. I ordered the burger medium expecting it to be just as amazing as I remembered it and it came back fully cooked -- no pink. The bottom bun was still cold. The mushrooms were wet and cold. And the top bun was burned and dry as if someone tried to toast or reheat an old piece of bread they had in the freezer. The beef itself was flavorless. I explained my concerns to the wait staff and he kindly returned it and had it remade. The new burger I got was basically the same-- dry bun, the kind that breaks in half when you try to take a bite, wet cold mushroom atop a flavorless beef patty that was still medium well. At this point I let my partner eat it (he'd eat anything haha), and I ate about 2 servings of fries. My girlfriend and I went here for their Tuesday Date Night special to celebrate our 4th year together. Boy were we impressed. The Date Night special is a prix fixe mystery menu served every Tuesday. For $100/2 people (so $50/pp), you get, as the website says, "3 courses along with a bottle of red, white or rose." For a French restaurant of this caliber, this screams deal of the century. Your chosen bottle of wine arrives first of course. We chose the red wine as recommended by our waiter. It was a solid French red from the Languedoc region. It wasn't the fanciest wine ever but it was buttery smooth, which is how I prefer my reds. After that, you don't get 3 courses, but 4! Soup of the day or salad, an appetizer (2 choices), a main (2 choices), and a dessert (1 choice, though each person receives their own). Tea and coffee after dinner are INCLUDED in the prix fixe! That alone is $5-6 in most restaurants. We both got the soup to start, a delicious, complex, and slightly spicy turnip soup. I didn't think I would like it but it turned out to be very appetizing. We then received our apps: mackerel for me, souffle au fromage for my girlfriend. Both fantastic and they complemented each other very well since the souffle was so rich and the mackerel was so light. It was clear the menu was designed with sharing in mind. Then our mains: dorade and hen. Once again, the two dishes were beautifully executed, delicious, and complementary. The hen was a substitute dish pulled from the a la carte menu as my girlfriend doesn't eat pork and the other main on the prix fixe was braised pork. Dessert was a green apple tart set in a solid chocolate "cup." Super delicate, light, and tasty. After dessert my girlfriend ordered a latte and I ordered a cappuccino, both of which were great. Only a couple dishes on the prix fixe were lifted from the a la carte menu, the rest, including the mains (the dorade and braised pork), were unique creations for the night. Awesome! They do offer the a la carte menu if for whatever reason you don't want the Date Night prix fixe, and I was impressed by what was available. Whole, pan seared foie gras is so hard to come by these days with everyone mashing it into a cold pate (WHY???) and that odd legislation calling for its ban. The wine menu is also very extensive and surprisingly reasonable! Flipping through it I saw good French bottles in the low $20s... unheard of at these high tier French restaurants! The ambiance was very cute with candlelight, silver utensils, and banquettes. We were seated side-by-side at one of those banquettes, which I love. One wall is covered in a chalkboard list of all the farms that they gather their ingredients from. Great to be supporting all those farms! All in all, a wonderful meal. The Date Night special is incredibly good value and I would happily return with my girlfriend just for that mystery menu... or the foie gras. The chef is clearly gifted and is offering very, very reasonable prices for top notch, traditional French food. We will be back! read more

Heavenly food -- perhaps the best brunch I've had in New York. Only one problem, and it had nothing to do with the food. Salad Du Marche -- The dressing is a dill cucumber sorbet tucked beneath the greens and it was so delicious I wanted to take a bottle home. Hudson Valley Duck Hash -- Extraordinary! Quiche Lorraine -- I'm no fan of quiche, but that changed after a bite of my friend's order. Became very jealous very quickly. French Toast -- Perfect way to end this perfect meal. The place itself is absolutely adorable, minus the back wall: a mural of French antagonists, all of whom (save one or two) are white. Let me start with the positives: Atmosphere was great: cool wallpaper, nice ambiance, and good 60s-70s music. There is some artistic nudity on the wall in the dining room and very sexual wallpaper in the bathroom so it may not be the best for young kids. However I think It's a great place to bring a date for a romantic evening. The wine selection was great and very reasonably priced. Now here is where they lost the 2 stars: The service was very good except for one thing. Please bear with my long explanation: they had "wild Atlantic salmon" on the menu. It is illegal to buy and sell WILD Atlantic salmon (it's all farmed raised). I'm sure they meant ALASKAN instead of atlantic. When I asked the server about it she was adamant that they had wild Atlantic salmon. I used to work in a restaurant and it bugs me when a server doesn't know about the menu. Otherwise great service. We had the beef tongue (excellent!) And the Pate' (good) followed by the Sea Bass (ok). The sea bass wasn't too fresh (I grew up spearfishing and know fresh fish when I taste it). Overall everything was good but I expected better for the prices. Maybe their NY steak is the way to go here? I might be back, but I recommend trying this place out.
