Yes the selection is smaller than most, sometimes the items have been on the belt for awhile, and there isn't a lot of interaction between you and the servers, but you're paying one or two bucks for each plate. And being able to spend less than ten dollars and leave with a full stomach, is ideal for someone in college or someone who is looking to save a few bucks. I have been coming to Kuru Kuru as my main sushi joint for the past six years now. It started out pretty great, good prices and a healthy portion of sushi with each plate. Recently the portions have become ridiculously small for what you pay for. The most stark example being that all of the nigiri fish slices you get are paper thin. The restaurant can get incredibly over crowded, and this tends to lead to mistakes with you orders. During my last visit I was brought the wrong items, each far more expensive the what was ordered, at least three times. At the end the check still maintained the mistakes brought to me, even though they were all rejected. I ended up paying at least $15 extra for items I did not order. It has been a long run, but I think it's time that I find a new sushi fix. I still recommend this location to people visiting because it does have a great location next to the water. Wow, a horrible embarrassing humiliating experience. They wouldn't serve us. Having been to this less than stellar establishment previously, where I had what was obviously less than fresh sushi, (Ahi), I arrived with my friend and told the hostess/manager we were waiting for a third party, but wanted to be seated, and start eating right away. In a rude snippy condescending tone, she informed us that under no circumstances could she seat us, until all parties were present. Fine, I completely understand, however, the place was fairly empty, past the lunch rush, and there were 4 empty tables. It was past 3 in the afternoon. We again reiterated, we wanted to eat immediately, irrespective of our friend joining us. "ITS OUR POLICY", ABSOLUTELY NO EXEPTIONS! We pigged out and I like that the plates only have 2-5 pieces so I can try more items before getting full. We were seated right away, the service was great, and we ate our fill for like $40. I must admit, I enjoyed it more than I thought I would, as it was nice to be able to pick sushi at your whim when something appealing shows up in front of you. It was also fairly busy when I was there for dinner and that helps keep the selections fresh I think. The quality was in the good/average range. The dining crowd is on younger side, which maybe isn't saying much anymore at my age. Pricing is by plate color, and I found it to be quite reasonable at $1.50 up to $3.50 range per plate. I've been coming here for over ten years and as the price increases the quality decreases. Today I was incredibly disappointed in their take out service. We usually check food orders to make sure they are 100% correct before we leave but since its a small space and the lady on the phone had repeated my order back to me we thought we would be fine going home. Half of our order was missing. I called when we got home and she told me she had only heard 1 thing instead of 2 for almost everything I had ordered despite repeating 2 back to me. They also forgot the sauce they charged us for. We had to drive all the way back for the sauce and rest of our food and they still charged us full price for everything even though we had to waste our time and gas because of their mistake. This is my favorite sushi spot in town! Even when they're super busy, ordering takeout over the phone is always prompt. Prices are very fair. The food is delicious! I had very bad experiences here today. What I learned today is... First, you should not ever order anything else from the belt. Just keep eating what they serve. Don't order. When you make the orders, the chef makes an attitude and SHOW you that he doesn't want to make it. He was non-stopping complaining with other chef. You can tell because they were checking on you and also laughing. Second, the size of every nigiri's rice is half of any other places I have been! It's even smaller than the last time I was here. My family and I have eaten here since it opened and always enjoyed it....until tonight. It has been quite a while since we last ate there and everything has really gone down hill. We watched as they cleaned a table for us and placed our clean dishes on the table BEFORE wiping it off. The soy sauce container was gross! It didn't look like they ever wiped it off. There was something in the wasabi dish, who knows what. The food was okay. Most we had to order, even though they were busy, they did not have what we like. The cucumber salad looked really really old and we didn't eat it. My husband ordered red wine for us and our server didn't bother to ask which one. Then my glass was dirty. I noticed right away and sent it back. However, after our server left, we noticed that my husbands glass was also dirty. When our waitress came back, he told her. She was kind enough about the whole thing but as I watched, she grabbed a clean glass from the shelf and poured the wine from the dirty glass into the clean one. After that we did not see our server for a long time. Eating with kids, we needed napkins and by that time our bill. I attempted to flag down a sever who walked by our table and she completely ignored me, even though she looked right at me. I was floored!!! I have never been treated so rudely in a restaurant before!!! The people waiting for a table, were surprised too!! No one came to check in on us. I ended up going to the front desk to ask for napkins!!! I took the kids to the bathroom to wash our hands after dinner. Some sort of air freshener had been sprayed in there and it was SO Strong that I couldn't breathe!!! Gross!!! After seeing the other reviews of food poisoning....we will not be eating here again!!! While the portions seem to have gotten a bit smaller, the prices have stayed consistent and it's always easy to find something that I love spinning around on the belt. Some of my favorites: the deep fried California roll, the Ichiro roll, and the squid salad. While there are better sushi restaurants in the city, none beat the value or the convenience of Kuru Kuru. read more

Then they immediately gave all the seats and tables away. And if you don't arrive right at 5:00, when the doors open for their dinner, you could potentially wait up to an hour, depending on the size of your party. We're frequent kuru kuru go-ers! My hubby and I are there at least once a week. The sushi is delicious, very good prices and so much variety! If you don't see what you like, you're easily able to order some. It's so much fun to be able to pick and choose different things, and explore sushi variety. But The last few times I've gone it's been considerably busy, but both times the older server, who I'm assuming is the boss has been rude to her workers. There is one aspect of training, yes. But she's been demeaning to her workers in front of guests just in the last three times we've gone. Who knows how much it's actually happening. After a day-trip across the US-Canada border, we decided that we'd end our evening somewhere in Bellingham for dinner. We were looking for some Japanese restaurants, but could only find this place and a bunch of teriyaki places. This was another kaiten sushi joint. The place is small and there are no booths like other kaiten chains (like Sushi Maru, Sushi Land, or Genki) to cater to bigger parties. Instead of booths, they had tiny round tables that would seat no more than four people. We had five, so we had to wait for the bar. I had a somewhat disappointing experience since there was a party of three that was seated right next to us at the bar and we were all seated towards the back of the restaurant and quite a way's away from the chefs. However, the party of three (who were seated AFTER us) managed to get their orders a lot more quickly than we did because they knew one of the staff making sushi. I had to ask the waitress about my order three times to see if they could get me my two orders of crab salad gunkan before it finally arrived. You'd think that maybe they were busy, which could be the reason for the wait, but the staff that our party next to us knew had time to even make idle conversation. The sushi was alright, but I've had better. And I've definitely been to places with more attentive staff. Next time, I'll just go looking for teriyaki in Bellingham for more hopeful customer service. read more

I used to like this place. It's not the best, but it was good. But my last visit was appalling on so many levels. First, I was meeting someone for lunch and there was a wait. As it turned out, the other party couldn't make it because of traffic. So I'm sitting there peacefully, when I notice a couple of people who walked in getting seated. I mentioned this to the hostess, who immediately informed me of their "policy" of not seating until the other party arrives. Not necessarily a bad thing, but at least let the customer know. I was seated immediately once I told her my party couldn't make it. (never tell me about your "policy". This is the poorest way of dealing with a customer) Now I'm having a fairly good lunch when I order the softshell crab hand roll. I made it clear that I can't have cucumber. What I get is a softshell crab, sprouts, avocado and a wad of fake crab. Yuck. I let them know that I don't want that and they take it back. Now they serve me another hand roll, but without any sprouts or avocado. What's this about? I told the server who brought the chef. The only thing they could do is tell me they would have to charge me again if they had to replace it a second time. His excuse is I didn't want cucumber, that's why they took off the sprouts and avocado. There's no dealing with this guy, he's going to charge for another one. I told him that all I needed was the sprouts and avocado and it would all be good. Finally got the sprouts and avocado. But I got charged for 2 servings. This is really poor business. I love Asian food, but when there's a problem, a lot of these Asian restaurants act like you're trying to cheat them. This is a pretty common issue. Considering that I paid for an entire roll and only wanted part of it, I think they could have done much better in the preparation and the customer service area. I had to get back to what I was doing so I didn't have time to fight it out with them. Maybe if they hadn't been so argumentative they could have turned this around. I have ridden my fair share of sushi tracks and believe this is one of the best. That said, do not mistake this for high-end, though the quality rivals many apparently high end Japanese joints. For one, they use real crab; that's rare. The nigiri is generously and skillfully sliced. The rolls are also tastefully plump, creative, and rarely desecrated with cream cheese or other Amurican fillers. Everything seems to be fresh as well (read: no soggy cold tempura bits). The service is friendly and the dockside scene is very nice, especially if you've been sucking office air all day. The space is modestly sized, so don't expect to seat the whole crew in one cabin. read more
