Every time I go here there is a wait to get in. What I enjoy is that while you are waiting they offer you edamame to snack on. This definitely helps with the wait especially if you are like me and are staring at the conveyor belt drooling. Once you are seated at the belt, there is a wide variety of options. Kuru Kuru has been around for quite a few years now, so today was not my first time in. A few things. I love sushi, good sushi. This is not. If you like a lot of imitation crab and deep fried over priced mystery rolls this could be your spot. Next, I don't think they've cleaned since opening the restaurant years ago! I was actually grossed out while I was sitting there, and should have left. Everything has handprints on it, the soy sauce holders are sticky and kept in a dirty bin, the floors I think there as something growing in the corner, no joke. So if you want cheap, flavorless, low quality and over priced sushi hit this place up. If not, please go to one of the other restaurants in Bellingham. We have better options. read more

We just went to this spot tonight for dinner! Service was great and the server was attentive. The seats are now separated with plexiglass and spaced apart. It felt pretty safe. The fish was pretty good! I'm not a super fan of rotary sushi because I always feel like it's not as good or fresh but I was quite happy with the quality. The only thing is the rice was a bit hard. It was al dente and I prefer it to soggy rice, but because of that, my partner didn't enjoy it as much. read more

We dine here often and have never experienced this type of poor service. She was also attempting to train a new waitress and you can tell that she was overwhelmed with having to be tasked with that job. We feel terribly sorry for the young gal she was training as it was clear that she was feeling an immense amount of pressure with the way Judy was shuffling her around the restaurant. Went last night with my wife and nephew (9). Nice greeting as we walked in the door. Told there was about a 10 minute wait, no problem. After about half that we were asked if we wanted to wait a little longer for a table or be seated immediately at the bar. Since my nephew loves moving food we opted for the bar. There was a huge assortment of plates going around so we got down to the business of eating. Everything was really fresh and tasted great. Also ordered jalapeno poppers and a lion king. Both have gotten a bit smaller and more expensive as costs have risen. I don't like it but I get it. Universal truth-as overhead rises so do prices. Overall a great night.Food was good and fresh, service was awesome and when we left the goodnights and thank you's were abundant. I used to work here a while ago and still find myself coming back to Kuru years after I've left (graduated). I love Kuru Kuru's sushi! Great food and even better service. I've come about 5 times now and haven't been disappointed. I try and come right after their 2:30 reopen since it can get pretty busy. Their eel nigiri is phenomenal and sometimes the only reason I come down if for a couple pieces. Love the eel roll they have with the shrimp tempura sticking out the end as well. This is one of the few good sushi places in Bellingham. Kuru Kuru is located right on the water and is great for date night. My family has been coming regularly for years. However, this restaurant cannot comfortably sit groups larger than four. The fifth person just gets an extra chair stuck at the end of the table, which blocks the aisle so servers have to squeeze behind. Unfortunately, the manager/owner micromanages the wait staff, which causes slow service. Staff are unable to even walk guests four steps to a table without being nagged or re-directed. The servers are all very polite and competent but the service is always terrible because the servers can't do anything without the manager questioning them. Water glasses are left empty for long periods of time and it's impossible to get anyones attention to order food. It takes 10-15 minutes to get someone's attention to talley sushi plates after finishing a meal, even though there are only a few tables. read more

The decor is, "business cafe," but who cares when the sushi is this good? We just picked sushi 'boats' off the conveyor belt and didn't pay attention to what they were. Salmon and tuna nigiri were both fresh and delicious. A couple of crunch rolls with panko on top and crab in the middle. My favorite was a roll with bits of tuna, chives, and almonds on top and a bit of mayo with crab inside. They weren't very busy today - maybe because of the upcoming holiday. Used to be the only go-to place for decent-quality sushi at a somewhat-affordable price in Bellingham, but every aspect of this place has declined severely in recent years. It's still better than most local alternatives... but that's not saying much, and I can't remember the last time I haven't left here disappointed. Prices are awful. The only pricier sushi in Bellingham is the ramen place downtown. Most of the varieties worth having are the black plates - which are now almost $5 apiece (each plate being about 1/5th to 1/6th of a normal-sized roll). The only way it would make sense to charge what they do for black plates is if the others were all between $1-2 each and MUCH fresher. If you prefer proper sushi to the standard Western drivel endemic to the PNW, expect each visit to cost you $30-40 withOUT any drinks. The Red Dragon and Seared Salmon Rolls are the best items on the menu, and are pretty much the only reason I still occasionally come here. The Ichiro Roll, Lion King, and their house Futomaki are decent, but difficult to get fresh at most times of the day. Everything that comes with any kind of sauce on it is going to be WAY over-sauced, so just know that in advance. When you do manage to get one of the more authentic and/or fancy rolls made fresh, it's worth it - but still WAY overpriced. For just about anything else simpler you'd be better served just buying full rolls elsewhere. Sadly, there are few other options for sushi in Bellingham that aren't much worse... but that's about as much "good" that I can say about this place. At any given time, most of the plates have been sitting (and warming) on the conveyor for WAY too long; anything more complex than a california roll is generally dangerous to eat off the belt. Even worse, they've lately started to take plates down, put them back in the cooler, and then re-serve them later - which is absolutely a horrible idea (and a massive violation of food prep regs). I never touch anything that I didn't see them put out while I was sitting there - and even then, I make sure it's actually fresh (if not, put it back!). If you do eat here, order EVERYTHING directly from staff and insist that they make it fresh - DON'T let them just grab you something off the belt and bring it over to you. If they say they "don't make items to order," they're straight-up lying to you; if they really fight you on it, just tell them that you already inspected (whatever it is you wanted) on the belt and that it wasn't fresh enough to eat (which is almost always true anyway), and that'll change their tune. Speaking of service... it usually ranges from annoyingly-slow to bad, and only gets worse as the place gets busier. Don't be shy about flagging down anyone you see for anything you need, because if you don't you'll probably never be seated or served. On multiple occasions I've had a frazzled host misplace our name on the wait-list resulting in our waiting half an hour longer than necessary (or more) to be seated; each time, I had to go up to the front to solve the problem myself, because they apparently didn't notice. Weirdly, the wait staff seem to be constantly bustling about from the front of the place to the back at all times - despite not actually doing anything that directly involves customers. (I dated two former waitresses from here, and both couldn't stress enough that it was the worst job they'd ever had by about a million miles due to the owner(s) insistence on micromanaging employees at all times despite being impossibly incompetent... and based on the sum of my experiences eating here, that sounds about exactly right). It's a shame, because most of the wait staff seem to be actually very, very competent and polite once you actually get their attention - but for whatever reason, they're prevented from doing their normal jobs by (whatever the owner is keeping them busy with, apparently). Owner, if you're reading this, sort yourself out; you are absolutely terrible at front-end management! DO NOT GO HERE FOR TAKEOUT, EVER, PERIOD. You will get the oldest, nastiest crap from the belt/cooler that they couldn't otherwise get rid of, EVERY TIME. Every time I've ordered (or been present when friends have ordered) takeout from here, it's been literally inedible. On all but two of the several dozen occasions I've been here in the last 4 or 5 years, the plates were tallied incorrectly - so ALWAYS CHECK YOUR BILL. read more

However, I think the owner or one of the long-time servants (? Asian/Korean lady with long pony tail) is a bit on the rude side. Came here at 8pm on a Saturday, "end of the night" so no sushi was available for selection... had to order everything from a waitress who neglected to tell us it would take 20 minutes. My favorite sushi place in town. It's fast, simple and tasty. If what you are looking for is not on the belt the staff will quickly make it for you. Don't be shy either, if you really want four plates of tuna nigiri, your server won't even blink and shortly you will be in nigiri heaven. Dear Lord, I thought I'd died and gone to heaven. Well, as close to heaven as I'm going to get without a) breaking the bank, and b) going over the border or back home to the East Coast. While nothing compares to true made-to-order, all-you-can-eat sushi, Kuru Kuru is a great substitute. It's got a conveyor belt, which is fun in itself, but the variety was decent on a Friday night at 7:30 pm - both in people watching and food. While we did wait a bit, things moved along pretty quickly. It's a small place, but the nature of it keeps people moving. There was a decent amount of raw stuff, and to my surprise, they had uni and several different types of roe, which was salty and delicious. There's beer and sake in bottles for pretty standard pricing, if that's your persuasion, but if you're feeling really Japanese, there's Ramune on the belt as well. As for the variety and quality of the sushi, you have to have realistic expectations. No, you aren't going to get sashimi, and you aren't going to get A+, top of the line artful creations. There are pretty good "complicated" maki, and there's saba and toro sushi, but you're paying no more than $3.50 for a 4-piece maki. The offerings changed the longer we sat, but we'd have to go on a less-busy night to really be able to sit and see what comes off the belt. If I have lots of time, I will likely go there again, since I didn't get to try everything this time around, and for what it is, you really can't beat it. read more

I never go into conveyor belt sushi expecting high quality fish but I almost always come to Kuru Kuru when I want sushi because in my opinion they have some of the better quality fish in town. That being said, they've changed and not for the better. This place used to be amazing (I'd say 5 stars for conveyor belt spots) but I left town for several months and when I came back I was sorely disappointed. Their nigiri comes with the tiniest rice balls - the reason being that it makes their paper-thin fish appear to have more substance that it actually does. The service is basically non existent from the servers - we were eating for over an hour and were checked on exactly 0 times, but some of the kitchen staff are friendly. We waited 15-20 minutes to get our plates counted while folks were waiting to be seated. I spent about $30 on only salmon dishes today and still feel like I haven't had enough salmon. I'd rather pay more for my food or expect less from the quality than have to watch every plate go by, judging the thickness of the fish to see which one I want to pay for. I love Kuru Kuru but find myself coming less and less because I'd rather go somewhere that serves better portions regardless of the cost difference. read more

My first time after years of thinking about it. It was busy. The host told us 10-15 minutes for a party of two. A woman, owner or manager, rushed up yelling "wait, wait" to the young man. She looked at the seating chart and wait list then proceeded to say "10 minutes" just as the fellow said. I'm sure it was embarrassing to him and made her look like an overbearing jerk. We sat to wait and were approached to be seated with 5 minutes. I'm thinking that this is actually going well for us. We selected some plates from the belt and ordered some items from the server. The food was fine and the service acceptable. We paid when we were done and sat to talk while we finished our wine . The same miserable woman came up to us and asked if we were done with a sense of urgency in her demeanor. The implication was that we were taking up space. There were a few people waiting but several four seat tables available. I saw no reason why people could not have been seated in one of those. A reliable place that provides a decent sushi experience for Bellingham. My first trip to Kuru Kuru was during it's first week and things were a little bumpy (understandable) and it was good enough to return...repeatedly. The aspiration to good service starts with a greeting of "irrashaimase" when we walked in the door. Seating has been delayed in recent visits (Kuru Kuru is getting busier) but I can usually get seated right away. Lately the food conveyor has been completely full with lots of choices, so that has been good. The service is usually okay, not great. Due to the self-service nature of this sushi bar, the service staff are usually only seen for the initial serving of drinks, but rarely thereafter. The main sushi chef has gotten better about asking if there is anything we want to special order (I never do). The food is a-ok, but not great, and certainly different. There are 5 different colored plates, from the yellow plate for $1.50 to the black plate for $3.50. Although there are many extravagant plates with lots of garnish (usually tempura crumbs) and various sauces (teriyaki and other flavors). The fancier dishes are more expensive and tend to be sweeter (which I find odd and unusual for a Japanese Restaurant). I find the more simple dishes to be better here. Simple sushi (slices of fish over fingers of rice) are among my favorites. The simple seaweed salad is also tasty (though sweet, once again). I find the more variety in the simpler dishes, the better the dining experience. Kuru Kuru is worth checking out. Kids love the selection (and there are always dishes that they will enjoy). Don't expect an authentic Japanese experience (this isn't Tokyo after all) but it is a fun restaurant to have in Bellingham. read more

Well I agree with Steph G on this one. Not that good and she is right, some of the sushi looks like it has been setting out for awhile. And I'm NOT talking about condensation. When seaweed is toasted properly for the rolls, there should not be any condensation on them. That makes the seaweed chewy and the rolls hard to eat which we experienced here. I don't think that you should have to check at ANY restaurant to see if something is fresh!! Duh! If it is a good restaurant then you know it is fresh! So I say no to this place. Not a comfortable place either. Just okay. Compared to all the other crummy sushi places up here it isn't horrible but look what there is to compare it to! I'm a picky sushi eater having lived in Anchorage where seafood is held to its highest standard. Bellingham, unfortunately, lacks good sushi. I'm about to give up hope and just go to Richmond/Vancouver every time I want sushi. Thank goodness Kuru Kuru was one notch higher than other conveyer belt sushi restaurants I've visited. Sushi chefs were constantly putting fresh rolls and appetizers out, although there were a few tired looking plates circulating one too many times.
