What to say about Kowloon that has not been said before. It is an institution, been in business for 70 years and now seats 1200 people (1400 pre pandemic). I went for the experience and the throwback vibe, dining room and cocktails. As others have said, the food is only so-so. This is Americanized Chinese food that seems to be pre-made. No matter what we ordered, it arrived at our table a minute or so later, which tells me it must all be pre-made and not cooked to order. The cocktails were good enough, but frankly not very strong. The food here is really only 2-3 stars, but the history, kitsch, tiki vibe bring it up to a solid 4 for me. This is worth a trip down memory lane for some. read more

An absolutely iconic restaurant to stop in to, if you have never been. This place is enormous and has had its fair share of celebrities that have eaten here and stopped for a photo, too. It was fun to see all of the celebrity pictures on the wall and to explore the different rooms and decor around the restaurant. They also have an outdoor beer garden with lots of seating and cute lanterns! Very fun! Aside from all of that, the food was just ok and place shows a good amount of wear and tear from all of those years of being so popular. However, I heard the owners are retiring and closing down for good (at an undetermined date) so it's understandable that none of the wear and tear will be fixed at this point. read more

I've been going to and enjoying Kowloon's for over 40 years. Their Chinese food is consistently excellent, and all of the employees are helpful, friendly, great people. And, if all that excellence isn't enough, this is also one of those iconic stand-up comedy clubs, originally one of the places Jerry Seinfeld got his start at: there's a picture of Jerry at Kowloon's on the wall!! Very disappointing. Overpriced and most of food was bland. a rack of ribs was $35 and no meat on the bones. The server told us they no longer do baby back ribs. The ribs were flat. Lobster sauce and beef fried rice had no flavor. Sweet and sour chicken was the only highlight. Last time for us. China Jade in Beverly so much better and half the cost. read more

I had not eaten here in a long time, Not sure what happened to this restaurant, but it was very mediocre to terrible chinese food. The chicken(chicken fingers and sesame chicken) was so dry, overcooked and stringy that it was not edible. All the other dishes were cooked properly, but were flavorless, and just oily. Kowloon has been a family favorite for every new year for the past 40 + years. This yeah it was down rite horrible. We got take out and spent over $100 for 3 of us. The rice was very vinegary and unappetizing. The chicken fingers were so dry we couldn't chew them. Then the on the bone spare ribs were equally as horrible. What happened?? Great place for Chinese food. It is a cool place to dine in with tropical decor, low lighting, fountains, etc. It is a very relaxing atmosphere in which to enjoy a delicious meal. The dining room is enormous and although I expected it to be busy with the many cars I saw in the parking lot, I was seated immediately and was able to order not long at all after I was seated. My lunch was brought to my table very promptly as well. So the service here is very quick. They serve many Chinese dishes as well as sushi and Thai style dishes. There are also many appetizers to pick from as well as a couple of different Pu Pu platters and appetizer combinations. Soups are available as well. I ordered from the lunch menu which is available everyday from noon until 4:00 PM. On the lunch menu you will find about 15 different main dishes all served with either rice or lo mein and ranging between $14 to $15 depending on which one you pick. For an up-charge you can also add one or more appetizers to your lunch plate to make it a combo meal. They also have another lunch option where you can create your own plate by choosing at least 2 and up to 5 different items from a set list of options which includes rice, several appetizer options, a couple of different chow mein options and the list also has stir fried vegetables as one of the options that you can pick from to make your own combo plate. I decided to pick from the list for my lunch so I went with the chicken fingers, chicken wings and pork fried rice. They were all very delicious and the portions were just enough to fill me up without leaving leftovers. I can tell I really enjoyed it since I ate everything on my plate which is very rare for me LOL! I received friendly, quick and attentive service. My server did come by my table a couple of times to make sure I was enjoying my food and to refill my water glass. Upon finishing my meal, the plates were cleared from my table immediately. They have a pretty big staff since I saw a lot of different servers, busboys and food runners going around to serve all of the people in the dining room. So they are well staffed which is a good thing for a restaurant of this size. I always enjoy the food here, I hadn't been in for quite some time and it was great to get the chance to come back here for lunch this afternoon. read more

Kowloon is a storied, 60 year old Chinese spot 20 minutes out of Boston. The front is a really cool A-frame and the whole restaurant is in the tiki style. Being a tiki lover, I was really excited to see Kowloon. When you walk in, you can tell a lot of the restaurant has been remodeled. Alot of it is brightly lit with TV screens everywhere. But there's still some cool old elements. I wanted to sit at the bar. The host tried to seat me at this brightly lit sports bar area. He could tell I didn't like it so he said "oh we have another bar... a tiki bar!". I said "yes, that would be great!" He led me to another room and I sat at a bar with an old Chinese bartender. The decor was better here. Somewhat dark with some tiki decor. I was happy here. I ordered a Zombie and Kung Pao Chicken. The Zombie arrived in about 12 seconds... not a good sign. It tasted of fruit juice and the smallest amount of cheap rum. The Kung Pao was really light in color and really light on flavor. Top five worst Kung Pao of my life. I finished quickly and left, wishing I had seen it in it's heydey and knowing I would probably never be back. read more

I can't get enough of this place. I went a few times last winter and their inside is wild. They have fountains and a boat theme inside. They food menu is so large but you really can't go wrong with anything on the menu. I went today for their bingo night outside. The MC was incredible and bingo was so much fun even though I didn't make it to the finals. They have lots of drinks, a champagne bar and a dj. My friends and I slip crab ragoons, tangerine chicken and sushi. It was great to split because the plates were so big. We all got drinks and they were very strong. At the end of the night we all bought t-shirts, they had a large selection of them. Maybe this place is a little cheesy but I absolutely love it and it is a must try if you are in the area. read more

Kowloons treats their restaurant like a revolving door. As quick as people come in, they try to rush them out. I've given them passes in the past because their food and drinks used to be good, and I did appreciate that the wait was never TOO long. However I came here for an early dinner this past Friday before the dinner rush, and it's safe to say that they've gone downhill. First of all there is a three drink limit per customer. This would normally be fine however there was barely any alcohol in our drinks. Our server was nice but we definitely felt rushed. Our pupu platter came out as quickly as we ordered it and everything was cold. Why? If I'm paying $46 for a pupu platter, I expect some effort put into the quality and to be served food that's at a safe temperature to consume. The crab rangoons and spareribs probably would have been good if they were hot. The egg roll was just BAD. Thankfully the lo-mein and general Gau's came out hot, but the chicken tasted reheated and just disappointing. At least their chicken fingers are still good (even cold) but that's not enough to make me come back. I think this was my final visit to Kowloon's and that saddens me. read more

I was given a surprise birthday party there, yesterday. The place is huge and something to see. We had a group of 17 people, ordered a variety of dishes along with the peninsula poo poo platters. Do they have two kitchens? One for dine in and one for takeout? Because the food quality I've gotten from one is entirely different than the other- even the ingredients are different. I'd suggest dining in to experience the restaurant, it's all about the vibe. The food is also better when you sit down. I've gotten flat noodle lo mein during dine in, but they use another noodle for takeout. The chicken teriyaki is NOT teriyaki- it's unbreaded fried chicken on a stick- there is no flavoring or sauce. Kowloon really is an experience. It is so kitschy and that is really what my family was looking for - the food is very bland, but the memories are hysterical. We didn't get seated where we would have liked (in the room with very fun beach wallpaper and the giant boat in the middle of the room) but it was still a blast. We ordered the Kung pao chicken, beef and broccoli, lo mein, hot and sour soup, and crab Rangoon. Everything was perfectly mediocre. We even got a giant drink to split between the four of us. The Kowloon is a staple of Massachusetts and one of the signature spots you point out when driving on Route One. It has your typical Chinese food and always tastes good. I went a month ago and our service was really nice and always kept checking on us. Each room has a different fun theme, I mostly know about the boat/sea theme. Definitely would NOT recommend. They take out money but act like it's a problem when we need something or what we paid for is not up to par. They'll bring reheated / burnt food to your table and won't bat an eye & they are cheap with napkins, condiments, water, etc I asked for napkins and he reaches out over and grabs two off the table, One for each of us I guess smh I ordered the peninsula Pupu platter and it came with the HUGE ribs, two random fried wontons, burnt fried shrimp, burnt chicken "fingers", burnt egg roll, no crab Rangoon, & under cooked chicken wings. I ordered the beef lo mein and that was nasty & oily. The salt and pepper shrimp had no salt, no pepper, nothing just garnish under them. I ordered pork fried rice & they brought me shrimp fried rice : I tell him I didn't order that and he told me I did lol. So he ultimately takes it and brings back pork fried rice & it was cooked correctly Ordered scallion pie and they brought a small bowl of soy sauce & duck sauce for all of our food I mentioned the quality of my food to my server and he only said okay and walked away then he brought back the bill, with no modifications. After hearing about this MA institution from several friends, I had to visit during my trip. The atmosphere is so fun and leans heavily into the tiki theme. We were greeted warmly and seated immediately. Our server/bartender, Chris Y, was so nice and funny, he had lots of great drink recommendations served up with a bit of humor. The food was delivered quickly and piping hot. The General Gau Chicken had a balanced flavor and wasn't overly sweet. The beef & broccoli is a pretty solid standard with super tender beef. I also ordered the salmon sashimi and it was among the best I've ever had. The pieces were huge and flavorful. I was surprised (pleasantly) by the portion size. It was excellent value for the price. The drinks were good though not as strong as they could've been. That didn't diminish the experience at all though - they were fun and flavorful. Anything off the tiki drink menu is a win as far as I can tell. Upon review of the 1 star reviews - I can only imagine that you'd be disappointed to order American fare (chicken wings, chicken fingers) at a Chinese restaurant. They don't make restaurants like this anymore. Upon arrival, the building is unique and just as unique inside. We arrived for dinner while passing through town, I'd seen it before on a previous trip and made a point to stop this time. We were sat immediately and our sever was friendly and prompt. The food portions are huge and all our dishes were great. I'd say the Lo Mein was my favorite. Have not been for a very, very long time for that very reason but tonight the twin lobster specials they have going on got me and I convinced my husband who is not a fan of Kowloon, to go. Figured we couldn't go wrong with salt & pepper and ginger & scallion lobsters, WRONG! First, they were the tiniest lobsters, even smaller chopped up. The ginger & scallion was a goopy thick sauce that strangely tasted like chicken, the salt & pepper lobsters were bland, no spice. We also ordered my fav Chinese app, crab rangoon. I sent these back, the filling had a strange gooey (not in the good way) texture, like glue. The "tangy spicy" green beans were still raw & bland. We ended up eating for hunger and not pleasure. I'll admit, I didn't think the food was amazing...but what I did like, was that I still had leftovers 4 days later. I turned the Kung Pao tofu into taquitos and the curry into a pizza. BANGIN'. My drink didn't taste strong, but the drink my partner in crime got definitely had alcohol in it. Still, tasted good. I will definitely be back here...if you like Tiki Bars, you have to swing by.
