They usually have lobster fest in the summer and now introduced a lobster roll for 18.95! I don't know where you can get a lobster under $20 nowadays. I never understood it until recently but they are really great New England Chinese food. New England Chinese food has some subtle differences with some sauces and duck sauce in particular. Kowloons duck sauce is bomb.com. Dip a chicken finger or your crab ragoon and go to town, pour it on your noodles. Just like that commercial, I put that *beep* on everything.... Like any restaurant there are some pros and cons. I love Kowloon when they're at their best, but too often they're mailing it in with reheats from the night before (recent spareribs) or long-held items (recent rice, egg rolls) that have become soggy and/or cold. -- Sweet and Sour Chicken (on a combo): Better than it's been. Good portion, fingers crispy, not fresh fresh, but semi-fresh with good chicken-to-batter ratio. Sweet and sour sauce served on the side was excellent: nice and sweet, with plenty of tang too, and even though sticky, not the dreaded gloppy fire engine red version served elsewhere. Overall, well above average. If hotter and fresher, elite. -- Pork Fried Rice (on the combo): Composition: excellent. Color: excellent. Flavor: excellent. Warmth and freshness: lacking in both. Obviously prepared a good while before I ordered it and sitting in a bin to be taken as needed, not cooked to order. -- Egg Roll (add-on to the combo): Good fillings but gummy shell. No crispness. Not much warmth. I keep asking for fresh and they promise fresh, but they lie. Decent flavor, and some shrimp were involved, so at least average. But when Kowloon decides to put the effort in or when timing is on your side, these are among the best in the business. Packed place on a Saturday night! Tropical decor and atmosphere enjoyable. We were seated quick by pleasant hostess and friendly waiter came over right away. Food was delicious! This was my husbands first time. His favorite dish is typically general gao chicken. It was good last time but could have used more spice. We got it anyway to see if it was better but it was the same. Pu pu platter was excellent w our favorite being the spare ribs that fell off the bone so tender! My 2nd stop to fulfill my wishes was to stop at Kowloon & order bone in ribs & sliced pork strips. These two items are now virtually non existent in the world of Chinese restaurants. Today was my lucky day. Bone in spareribs was everywhere when I was growing up then poof all you can find everywhere are boneless ribs. The same is true for pork strips. Attentive and I pray some day he gets to open up his own restaurant, "Ming Dynasty" but until that day, Kowloon's has a great server with an awesome personality and great customer service skills A+ the deco also A+. I ordered shrimp fried rice as well as all the food in pics but I started eating before I took pics. The rice was nice and fresh the shrimp was fresh as well. The chicken wings and fingers was good with some sriracha sauce brang the flavor right out. Both the spring and egg rolls was amazing as well. The beef nuggets and teriyaki was on point. My uncle didn't eat his vegetable fried rice so I can't speak about that at this time. The waiter Chris was very good at his job he was our personal waiter this evening. I have never been to a bad concert until tonight. And it wasn't just the acts, it was the entire experience. Parking is horrible when going to a concert there. We had reserved seating, they stuck us in GA. The outdoor bathrooms were NASTY! The concert was made worse by three old white guys that wouldn't get off the stage and at one point were videoing themselves. Literally ON THE STAGE BEHIND THE ACTS. The sound wasn't that great, we had to listen to some over privileged rich dj for an hour before the acts came on. If I was the Kowloon, I would not have paid the acts bcuz they were horrible - Shannon and the Cover Girls. But really even without that disappointment, this place was terrible. We didn't have time for a dine in so we picked up to go. We got Scallion Pie, Crab Rangoon (8), Peking Ravioli, Kung Pao Chicken, Lo mein shrimp and pork. In general, there was really nothing to write home about for this Chinese American food. The dishes require the expectation of duck sauce to improve the flavor of their dishes. A Northshore staple, located right on Route 1 in Saugus. They offer quite a large menu and their food is pretty good. The inside is a vibe as well, multiple dining rooms and a cocktail lounge featuring a full dining experience. Drinks are tasty as well. I don't love Kowloon for its food. Quite frankly, the food is just okay and somewhat overpriced. But I love Kowloon for what it is. An over-the-top, tropical-themed, absolutely ginormous 1200-person restaurant that is a relic of yesteryear. I go for the experience and I love every moment of its quirkiness. I will be truly saddened when it is torn down, potentially later this year. While I know there's a future Kowloon opening in the new complex... it will just not be the same. Kowloon is a great time. I try to go here fairly often because they will be tearing it down, and rebuilding but in a smaller space. It's in nostalgic and fun and consistent venue to go. Go with family, go with friends, meet people here, see karaoke, or Play trivia night or music bingo, there is always something going on. It will be messed.. just don't go here strictly for the food. My boyfriend and I (now husband) loved going here for the atmosphere and the food which never disappointed. Service was not great considering the lack of patrons. It took while to get the bartender's attention. Drinks were good, but a little expensive. When we got finally got the bartenders attention we ordered Saugus wings, crab rangoons, and boneless spare ribs. Everything came out quickly but the food was cold. I assume it was sitting in a vat under a heat lamp as it was obviously not freshly made. The ribs were extremely dry and chewy. The Rangoons were greasy and the dough chewy. Not fresh. The cold wings came swimming a a sticky dark broth. The thing is, the flavors were good. Had this food been hot and fresh I might have given a higher rating! And if the server paid even a little bit of attention or asked us if everything was ok, I might have given a higher rating! The price tag was high at about $90 before tip. I went back to Kowloon to meet friends for dinner on Saturday night. The place was hopping! There was an hour wait but the party spirit was strong! They have an outdoor Chinese lantern patio with dancing and karaoke contests and inside the decor is so charmingly kitsch that you have to love it! It serves very standard American Chinese fare... it's not going to blow your mind or be a meal that you'll dream about, but it's not supposed to be. I visited the Kowloon for the first time in 45 years. I placed an order with DD for pickup ...pork fried rice($18), asked for extra bean sprouts. Also ordered pork chop suey($18)SR on the bone($24) and 2 egg rolls($17). $85 dollars later I was on my way home. When got home noticed I had an adjustment to my bill adding $2.17 for my xtra bean sprouts, what a joke! Anyway here is my assessment of the food after spending an outrageous amount of money. My rating scale is 1-10... 10 being Elite. -Spare Rib on the bone were tender and meaty but a little dry with no extra gooey sweetness that I prefer(7.3) -Fried Rice had a good amount of pork nuggets and onion and plenty of bean sprouts (haha) but little to no flavor and was very oily (5.7) -Pork Chow Mein (8.2)was very good, really fresh with great flavor and the dry crunchy noodles (10)were some of the best I have ever had. But did notice that chow mein may have been loaded with msg because I was very thirsty after eating it. Now the Egg Roll.. $17 for 2 egg rolls, I was expecting big things from these overpriced veggie/pork logs but they very much disappointed, they had an odd flavor to them, some spice I did not recognize, shell wasn't bad, filling, meh.
