I ordered a 14 oz steak, medium and it was extremely overcooked. I couldn't even eat it. I didn't have enough time to have them remake it so I asked them to take the steak off and I would pay for the fries and side salad I ordered. The manager "discounted" the steak $5.89. What kind of crap is that?! So I paid $25 for fries and a SIDE salad. I will NEVER eat here again. They're some grade-A scammers. Don't even waste your time with them. read more

My wife and I were vacationing in Memphis the week before Christmas. We'd been hitting up all the usual stuff (BBQ, haunts on Beale), but I was beyond stoked when I found out there was a place that offered poutine. Having honeymooned in Montreal, we were quite fond of the stuff. I'll get this out of the way: the food was excellent. She had the traditional poutine, which was fairly close to what we were hoping for. If anything, she thought the cheese curds were a bit too warm, which isn't a deal breaker in the slightest (once you'd had poutine in the heart of French-Canada, it's hard to find anything across the border that can live up to it). I had the poutine burger, which was super messy, but excellent. If I were rating this place on the food alone, it would easily be four stars. I would give it five if I had gotten to try the blue cheese mashed potatoes that I'd ordered (more on that shortly). But, obviously, there are only two stars here. That's because of the service. I have ate at a LOT of restaurants over the years, along with working in quite a few. What we encountered at the Kooky Canuck that night might be some of the worst, and move bizarre, service we've ever received. Our server was a middle-aged lady who seemed fine at first. We were seated, she came by, got our drink orders, came back with my water and grabbed our food orders. Except that my wife ordered a drink from the bar. The bar was roughly 10 feet from where we were sitting. I should also say, this was a Wednesday night. This place was not busy at all. We wait. And we wait. And we wait. After 10 minutes or so, we begin to look around. We can see her drink sitting at the end of the bar, dying. So, props to the bartender (who I will say, is kind of the MVP of the night, without even realizing it) for getting the drink out quickly. It just didn't get to our table quickly. After our server was AWOL for twenty minutes or so, she comes by and says something along the lines of, "I didn't know your drink was ready, I'll go get it now". Except that it was still at least another five minutes before it showed up. At this point, we're at 25 minutes for a bourbon and Coke. When it does show up, it's excellent (we're assuming it was remade, as there was no sweat on the glass and the ice was intact). When our food shows up, it looks excellent. Except that I had ordered their blue cheese mashed potatoes instead of fries (my poutine burger already had fries on it). Instead, my plate is covered in fries. Given how long it took to get one simple drink from the bar, I felt like voicing my concerns for the wrong side item probably wouldn't go over well. The server asked if I wanted ketchup for my fries. I said yes. The ketchup never came. Instead, what happened next was just weird. As I'm eating my dry fries, the sever walks to the front door and tells the bartender that she's going to the store, asking if he wants anything. We'd noticed a small convenience shop on the same block as the restaurant. Now, I get it: I worked in food for over a decade. Most people working in close proximity to businesses know each other and can quickly run errands like this. I wasn't as horrified by the idea of my server going off-property as most people probably would be. Except that she left and didn't come back. I didn't get my ketchup, nor did I get a refill. In fact, this person was seated with another table, who obviously had to wait for a considerable amount of time for someone to come by and start waiting on them. The bartender (once again, the MVP here) actually left the bar and walked outside, I'm assuming to go to the store and tell the server that she'd gotten another table. Finally, she shows back up and makes contact with us again. We asked for our check and made haste in trying to get out as quickly as possible. In all, I'm going to assume she was MIA for 15-20 minutes from the time our food was dropped off to when she showed back up at the bartender's behest. Had he not want to fetch her, I'm not sure when she would have returned. We wanted to go back the next night because the food was so awesome, but the idea of being seated in this person's section again was just too much. We hit up a Cajun place a few blocks over that was utterly incredible instead. Definitely check out this place for the food. It's incredible, as is the atmosphere and (I'm assuming) most of the staff. Just not that one person. read more

Yikes. I am sorry to have a seemingly dissenting opinion and really wanted to love this restaurant, but unfortunately didn't. Even hubs complained, which is very atypical. There were no greeters at the door, which really wasn't the issue. However, when one of the servers took us back to our seats - the person who was going to be our server audibly said to her "Why are you seating them here?" So that was a fun way to be welcomed. I was confused as there were lots of empty tables, but we were placed right next to a staff room, across from the kitchen entrance, and the last table next to the hallway down to the toilets. It was interesting watching our server texting on her phone throughout the meal, while we struggled to get her attention. The table next to us (who were being helped by a different server, the one who originally seated us) also looked upset at being ignored during their dinner. Food-wise: -"Southwestern" salad: was not good. No avocado, sour cream, or tortilla strips (which I had forgotten about until going back and re-reading the menu after we left). There were a few red bell peppers. The lettuce was not chopped well and the dressing was glommed onto the cheese. The pecans were also not good. I really should have sent it back and am kicking myself for not having done so. -"Memphis' Best" burger: again, no avocado (and again, we had forgotten about this until re-reading the menu after). The burger was meh and the fries were soggy. -Beef Stroganoff (side): not pictured, was ok. I honestly don't know what this is supposed to taste like, but I didn't enjoy eating it - so that one might be on me. It was ordered for the kiddo, who ate 2 bites. We took it back to the hotel, but ended up throwing it away. The attitude of the service progressively got worse as the meal wore on. We felt like we were a burden and ended up having to track down a different server to get our check, because she was nowhere to be found. The overall experience was not good to say the least. The decor and ambiance was lovely and it seemed like a really fun place. I am not interested in going back if we happen to be in the area again and ended up having to eat banana pudding purchased earlier in the day at Makeda's, which saved the evening. Loved this place! Great food and excellent service! I came upon this place during my first visit to Memphis and boooy was I in for a treat! It's had a great bar, cocktails and drink menu but also great for families! Everything we ordered was great! Fried green tomatoes, were hot, fresh and crispy and just lightly breaded ( in a good way where you could still taste the juicy tomatoe). The pork egg rolls were delicious as an appetizer! For meals the hamburgers are the most popular and do not disappoint! The catfish dinner ( large portion) and delicious in its own right! I tried the pull pork sandwich with sweet potato fries! Service was excellent. Food came out fresh and hot. The food is your standard bar food, but we really enjoyed our meal. We ordered the cheese bites and fried pickles as appetizers. Their dill ranch is BOMB. Dip literally everything in it I also love that they have 3 different ranches: BBQ ranch, Mexi-ranch, and dill ranch. For my meal I got buffalo tenders tossed in medium sauce. They were delicious too. Try their mac n cheese. It's a little saucy but surprisingly had a nice cheesy buttery flavor. We had a great experience all together! I love how they're open late night too. We live downtown and are always looking for somewhere close with good, quick bites. I have been told to try Kooky Canuck for forever but it's not something I would usually be into unless I was out with a group like I was for this trip as I am just not a big burger person. I was with a big group of coworker friends and we decided that all of our magical pokehunting had made us hungry. So since I had never been here they were down for introducing to the place. Everyone wanted to get drinks so hubby and I decided to go for it as well. Luckily some of my friends let me try sips or bites of their stuff as well so I could see what was awesome. The Gotta Get Up to Get Down was actually pretty good but I marked it as ok because it's not something I would get myself but rather something I would steal sips of from someone else. It's good but has no ice so it's a lot in a huge cup. It's not something I could drink all of by myself or even with my husband as it's not something he would like. The BBQ Nachos didn't really have any meat or much to them so we won't get those again. The BLT wasn't my thing as the fried green tomato wasn't really that fried- the breading fell off as I ate it. I didn't really taste much. I also really wasn't fond of the bite of Prime Rib burger a friend let me try so I definitely will skip on getting that if I return. I really liked the Donair which is basically a gyro with their own sauce to it. I will definitely get that the next time I visit. The Goombay Smash drink was also fabulous though huge. Hubby suggests we ask them to go light on the ice as half the drink was ice. To start with, the food was really good. We mostly had burgers and I thought mine was excellent. The fries are good and they serve a lot of them. I was disappointed because they did not have the Poutine available. Apparently an issue with getting curd cheese. Our server was excellent. He was new. He said it was only his fourth day, but he did a great job. Service was pretty quick and efficient. I had the Yonge Street burger. It was really good. An excellent mix of meat cheese bacon and condiments. BUT, the sandwich sauce they use with it really makes it messy. Once you start eating it you can't put it down because the bun will fall apart. I had a weird craving for pierogis, so I was very excited to see it on their menu. However once I sat down they told me that they didn't have any pierogis that day. UGH! When you crave something, that is what you want! Menu items should always be available. So I got a fried green tomato and pimento cheese burger. It was meh to me. The burgers were in perfectly formed patties which makes me think of frozen pre-made beef patties. Yuck! They were light grey and uniform throughout. For my sides I ordered mac and cheese which was decent and cheesy corn. HOLY CHEESE! The corn is literally in a thick cheese sauce. It was interesting but not something I care to get again. Sitting here in kooky having a lunch date with my wife... server asked what we wanted to drink. My wife ordered her drink (Dr Pepper AND a water). Waitress never looked at me and just walked off. I shared my wife's water. Brought back the drinks sat them on edge of table and left. Came back asked if we wanted an appetizer. Ordered fried pickles. Tried to say we wanted ranch but she cut us off and said "ok" as she was walking away. Brought back the appetizer and took our order and didn't see her again until she brought the food back. The glass of water was more than halfway empty and she looked at it and walked away. Didn't see her again for 30 min and our drinks were empty for 28 of those minutes. After 30 min she came back to ask if we wanted to go boxes. I said not yet, and had to call her back to get a refill. Poor service. And these are the types of servers who complain about not getting tipped. A tip is a reward for a good service not a mandatory part of the check. read more

I decided to stop in last night with my GF because we were HUNGRY af... Appetizer: Perogies Easily the best thing we ate. I kept calling them Canadian Dumplings. They were really good and filling. This made me happy! Entree: Great Maple Sirloin This was highly recommended so I was excited to try it. The steak hit the table perfectly cooked... unfortunately it had no flavor at all. No salt, pepper, nothing! It was sitting in maple syrup which just wasn't enough to make it enjoyable. I ate 3 bites and left the rest. The cheese corn side dish was pretty damn good though!
