I almost didn't have a great three days here because of the negative reviews on YELP. Negative people unfairly wield their pain in the form of unfair, untrue or unrealistic ratings. Yes, you are entitled to your opinion, however your pessimism and negativity hurts you more than the harm you intend. Here is my letter to the GM/CEO of Kohls Ranch Lodge at checkout. (Spoil Alert...it's just a great little place! GO, don't listen to others, GO check it out!) :) Dear Angela and Michael, Before I check out this morning I wanted to thank you for your leadership and for a great few days at Kohls Ranch Lodge. I saw an ad on Groupon for an inexpensive few nights and decided a visit was a perfect escape from the triple temps of the Valley (I live in the Phoenix metro area). I booked my reservation directly with the property to allow more flexibility with my trip (see details later). A few days before my weekend I jumped on Yelp and Travel Advisor to gather a few tips from previous visitors. Much to my surprise, I discovered a myriad of negative comments about Kohls Ranch. I needed these few days of rest without disappointment or drama, so I called to cancel my reservation. I spoke to Anna and explained the reason for my cancellations were the negative comments. She admitted that the property indeed did have turnover and difficulty finding housekeeping staff and the ongoing construction were needed upgrades to improve the resort. She assured me that my trip would be a good one and the team would do everything possible to ensure I had a good visit. So, I decided to keep my reservation and made my first visit to Kohls Ranch. I am happy to report that my trip was EXACTLY the rest and renewal I needed. My experience at all points of my stay was very good and in some cases excellent. I want to acknowledge a few exceptional individuals I met during my stay.... FRONT DESK: Anna, your patience and encouragement made my trip possible. THANK YOU! Johnny and Mark, you commitment to my customer satisfaction by providing endless ideas on 'things to do' meant I got a chance to see area hikes I never would have discovered on my own. Andre, thank you so much for making a special exception by opening the spa one morning so I could soak my weary bones. I have arthritis and the heat feels SO GOOD! Beds are terrible. Staff is rude not worth $300.00 a night. Food is mediocre at best.

So disappointed May 19, 2021__After booking our 6th stay at Kohl's Ranch on April 4th, I will say this will be our last for the lack of customer support and loyalty of patronage. I'm not sure where the problem/fault lies, but we were downgraded to an "efficiency" room vs. "standard" room unbeknownst to Us after booking through the same avenue we have for 6years. We spent 3hrs on the phone with hotels.com as the Morgan, with Kohl's Ranch told Us in the morning of our departure that it was their fault for the miscommunication. Needless to say, nothing got rectified as no one was going to accept responsibility and make it right or compensate for the dollar value we were charged. It's a shame that customer service and loyalty is no longer a value. To avoid the disappointment and frustration, My suggestion is to call and verify your booking no matter what online booking tool you use. Good Luck! read more

If you're expecting the small-town friendliness of rim country folks and hospitality from this establishment in the hospitality industry, avoid the front desk. where you will be treated like an inconvenience. It was the guests who were inconvenienced! The bar and restaurant were closed "due to a malfunction" and keeping the wood burning fireplace going after 9:00 pm was not allowed...also to avoid THEIR inconvenience. No exceptions were made for the fact that it was a rainy New Years Eve and there was no other place on site for our group to congregate...it was dumping rain and the bar was closed!!!! And do NOT check out 15 minutes late or you will be charged a $100 fee, unless you can talk Miss Congeniality in to waiving it, "because it's the New Year." Also confusing is the "No pets policy" despite numerous signs reminding to keep dogs on leash, and clean up after your pets. Much could be learned from the friendly, helpful gentleman on staff who quickly responded to a small maintenance request! A real bright spot in an otherwise disappointing experience! In previous visits, it's been hard NOT to enjoy spending time at such a beautiful place, but not this time!! Hopefully they can turn things around! read more

I would give zero stars if I could, not because I stayed here but because I couldn't stay when we booked and they would not give a refund or allow us to move our reservation. The day after we booked, my girlfriends house caught on fire and we had so much going on we couldn't make our trip work. There was no compassion and we lost $160 or so. We would have been more than happy to move our reservation, it wasn't even about the money at that time. We were only met with "we have a no refund policy, sorry." I was really looking forward to staying here after all the positive reviews I'd read. read more

The grounds are beautiful and very nostalgic of old school summer lodges, like in "Dirty Dancing", so it was very charming upon arrival. PRO: Front desk staff was friendly, but frazzled & unorganized. Swimming pool was nice for the kids. Some of the cabins had nice creek side views. Nice to have restaurant on site. Area is beautiful. With that all said, I could not give it anymore than 3stars because of one terrible experience- Our mattress was FILTHY!!! It had dark stains all over it and was DISGUSTING. We could not tell if it was just dirt or bodily fluids, but either way it was gross. See photo... Tried contacting management twice and have not heard back at all. Payson isn't full of nice hotels because it's really more about renting a cabin when taking the trip to that area. However, Kohl's is actually a nice hotel and one worth staying at for a weekend! Kohl's has been around since 1925 and is nestled within Tonto National Forest and right along the Tonto Creek. It's a quaint and charming log cabin resort and a perfectly relaxing getaway location. Once you get to Kohl's, know that the nearest grocery store or restaurant (besides their own) is around 17 miles away, so it's best to stop by a grocery store on your way up and grab some essentials since the rooms have a stove, refrigerator and appliances. They even have a grill outside the rooms so if you wanted to grill on your own, you could. If you stay, ask for a room that faces the creek because these rooms have decks with rocking chairs. The hotel is also dog-friendly, so your pal Fido is welcome for just $20 extra dollars per stay. Kohl's has a restaurant and small saloon but beware that they close early (by 8:30 PM). This hotel is all about rural living and getting away from the hustle and bustle of the city. It's right across the street from the Tonto hatchery for fishing and there are plenty of beautiful hikes surrounding the hotel. They offer horseback riding on the property as well! This hotel is perfect if you want to get away and have a quiet weekend with a lot of outdoor activities. Be prepared, your cell phone won't work here! Note: As of July, 2012, parts of Tonto National Forest near Kohl's is closed due to fire hazards and the recent bear attacks, so it's best to call before you visit. However, there is hiking all around and Payson is just 17 miles away so it's easy to get around and worth staying at Kohl's so you experience a beautiful setting. read more

We stumbled upon this gem just looking for something outside the chain hotels. This diamond resort is truly wonderful. Clearly, whoever designed this hotel took time to think through everything. We had an efficiency room - it was very comfortable and boasts a fully stocked kitchenette, sweet fireplace, and a FULL SIZE coffee maker (the coffee was the best of our 8 day trip). The area is absolutely beautiful and the food at the Zane Grey saloon was super. I would go out of my way to add this place to any future trip to Arizona! I'd love to try out the gorgeous creek side cabins - big decks overlooking the creek- gas grills for guests to use! I'd also love to try out the 82degree heated pool and the jacuzzi. If you like your food honest, not over the top in any way, this is your place. I had the brisket and hubby had pulled pork. Everything was so pleasant. No overcooking, oversalting, or over...anything. Just good in and of itself. Cole slaw, or "Kohl" slaw as they listed it was comprised of fresh chopped Brussel sprouts, cabbage, and parsley in a very light dressing. Some of the best I've had. Since when are the mashed potatoes so good solely on their own?? For dessert peach cobbler, which for anyone who loves a really sweet desert, would be near orgasmic. Kohl's Ranch is a unique and beautiful place with lots to see and do. Our only regret is not having enough time to stay longer! Every single staff member was polite and accommodating to meet the needs of us an our families. We have never had a better experience anywhere we've stayed. The cabins on the creek are secluded and back up to Tonto Creek. We literally watched squirrels play outside our deck every morning, The birds were singing up in the trees. It was like a fairy tale in real life! Our bedroom was a little hot during the day as there was no central air or ceiling fans in our cabin, just a wall unit in the living room. But, not a problem once the sun went down. There are fun lawn games to play, grills at each cabin, and the restaurant/bar has a great selection of food and drinks. I think I want to move in permanently, haha! We will be back for sure! Great experience, LOVE this place! Mike Beers helped coordinate our wedding at Kohl's Ranch. He was very thorough, clear, and accommodating. Even during the event he was in contact with us asking if there was anything we needed. We heard some negative feedback from people who stayed at Kohl's Ranch but we thought we would give them a chance. What a joke, the front office girl had no clue and you have to drill down to several places on their website to find that dogs are accepted for members and possibly for guests upon approval. We were not informed of this and took our two small dogs, they said we would have to wait about 4 hours to find out if we could stay or not. Really a bunch of BS so we were charged for the night and called the manager Sharon Steele who never returned my call. We ended up staying at a cute little place in Payson and will never go back to Kohl's Ranch again. Not to mention the little studios they have are a joke!! read more

Stayed weekend of June 1st. Had a great stay albeit short. Staff were really friendly at hotel and restaurant. They were juggling a wedding this weekend and we had a large group for lunch for a family remembrance and they couldn't have been nicer. I forgot to take pictures we had two two-bedroom cabins on creek. One was more rustic but with a fantastic large deck. (205) The other was more like a condo inside which appealed to those not wanting too rustic an experience and with a smaller patio (304). Both great. Just different. Buy groceries in Payson but they do have breakfast fixings and ice cream for sale. We could see the wedding festivities and looked like a great place for one. read more

If you're looking for five star, penthouse excellent this isn't it. If you want rustic history, friendly staff and the sound of a creek rushing past your window while the deer play in front of your porch - this place is for you! I didn't get as many pics as I wanted. I stopped on an impromptu, overnight trip but I WILL be back. I felt my blood pressure drop the minute I stepped foot in the cabin. Seeing a family of javelinas didn't hurt either. Lots of family activities at the lodge during the summer and nature views and quiet during the winter. Can't wait to go back!! read more

The wifi worked very well in our room and our porch both laptop and iPhones. Mention this because of other bad reviews. We came up here in April during the high 90's and 100 day in Phoenix. We loved this place because of the weather, views, pines trees, restaurant, hot tub, and the many activities i.e. bocce ball, corn hole, little golf put put, basket and volley ball, frisbee golf, and movies to watch in your room (too many to list). Our studio room was fully equipped for cooking, eating, including a gas fireplace and coffee, cream & sugar for their coffee maker. Shout out to Karen in the on site restaurant. If you have any questions about the menu she is very knowledgeable even remembers items that are not currently listed on the menu and has the chef prepare it for us. I attended the wedding of my son and daughter in law at Kohl's Ranch this weekend. I can't thank the staff enough beginning with Michael, the banquet staff, the front desk , the grounds keepers and everyone else involved. My wife and I haven't been on a vacation in a few years and we were looking forward to staying at this lodge. My parents had stayed here a few times and have really enjoyed their stays and being able to fish on the property. Unfortunately, our experience wasn't as great. Before we got to the lodge, we decided to call since it was earlier in the day and neither the confirmation email or the website mentioned check-in time. After getting through the menu options, we were placed on hold for 12 minutes before hanging up since we had pulled into the lodge parking lot. We went inside and there were two front-desk attendants helping one customer. We waited 20 minutes as they both attended to one customer about checking in. We asked when check-in was and was told we could check-in at 2 pm. We went for a brief hike and came back after 3 pm. We were then told by another front-desk attendant that regular check-in time was at 4 pm. No big deal, the other attendant was probably new. We left to grab groceries in town and came back a little after 5 pm. We were told by the same front-desk attendant that told us to come back at 4 pm that it wasn't quite ready yet and we waited another 15 minutes until our room was ready. This initial experience pretty much soured the whole experience. When we entered our suite, everything in the room was in working order and seemed clean. We quickly found out that the WiFi was nearly impossible to connect to. We weren't able to connect until a day into our stay. Even when we were able to connect, it was extremely spotty. This part we expected from the confirmation email that was sent. However, this should be advertised before booking the hotel in case guests need to use the Internet during their stay. The quality of the TV was similar to the early 2000s and would turn to static at about 10 pm every night. We had better WiFi and TV connection when we stayed in Greer which is even more isolated than this location. A few nights during our stay, we found a few live crickets and other smaller bugs, however, this was most likely because of the location of the lodge and the suite doors having about a one-inch gap at the bottom. The large plus to staying at this lodge is that it is close to quite a few hiking trails including Woods Canyon Lake and Willow Springs Lake which are one of our favorite places in Payson. Horton Creek is also right across the road from the lodge which was convenient after an 8-mile hike. Even with this in mind, we will be staying closer to Payson next time and driving out to the trails in order to receive better service. We actually received better service at half the price at the Motel 6 in town during another trip we took to Payson. read more

A representative of this establishment called my home asking for my husband. When I told the woman my husband wasn't available, she asked if I was his wife, to which I replied "yes." Then she told me that my husband and I had been at the hotel in the past and she was inviting us to return. The problem is that I have never been to Payson with my husband. When I asked him about this he reminded me of a work trip he had taken a couple of years back. Of course we had a laugh about it but I would advise this place be careful when making cold calls. We found a great price for a studio room. The property is well maintained and fun things to do around the property like basketball, horseshoes, botchy ball and others. The staff was nice, but the room was out dated. The bathtub enamel is peeling and the bed was very uncomfortable and the cleaning crew left cleaning supplies in the room. It is definitely not worth more than the $69.00 we paid. The cabins might be a better options next time. read more

Stayed here for a staff get away. The price was perfect and the stay was great. The rooms are nice and most of them even have a kitchenette. There are lots of activities on site and the creek is just a few steps away. This place is awesome. It is just a few minutes away from Payson and hiking is just up the street. The only downfall of this place is the wifi. Wifi is weak and signal is dropped often. That coupled with lack of cell service makes it tricky for business trips. What was supposed to be a relaxing afternoon and evening for an early departure the next day, the check in process was an ultimate disaster. We arrived at 2pm after a long drive from Santa Fe NM only to be told check in was 4pm. OK so we have a 2 hour wait, but the check in desk told us that they'll let the clean up crew know we were there. Check back in an hour. 3pm we check back in and told they are cleaning the room as we speak and wait in the lobby and we'll let you know. 4pm we went to the front desk again and were told "just about ready, but we do have an alternative for you facing the parking lot. We opted to wait until our room was ready which should be anytime. 5pm....room still not ready and now it became clear they are way short on cleaning crew personnel because others are facing the same problem. I'll start by saying this was my 3rd Valentines day here with my wife, EVERY single time we book the cabin with the jacuzzi on the deck. EVERY TIME! As usual the first of the year I call ahead to make sure I get our cabin. As I book, I get......"yes sir, we have one available.".......BOOKED. Day before we arrive, we get the confirmation phone call from the resort. "I'm booked with the cabin with the jacuzzi on the deck right?".......YES SIR! We head up to Payson early every time to walk around the property and enjoy the resort. We hit the front desk at 3pm to let them know we have arrived. Our room isn't ready yet......great no problem. We'll be in the bar, let us know when its ready. My wife asks.....could you make sure the jacuzzi is on and warm so we can get into it right away?..........Yes Mam, we'll check, but they are always warm. SO.......at this point is there any question in my mind that I'll get a different room? NO We make friends with people at the bar, and the bartender. We are the bartenders "Guinea Pigs" and she makes several SEVERAL shots for us, our friends and herself. (Liquor violation) After a couple beers, and several fruity shots, we go back up to the desk get our room key and head to our room.......NO JACUZZI.......back to the office. "Sorry your room isn't guarenteed"..........Wait what? Yes it is we confirmed it 3 times. No sir, we're at full capacity, we have nothing else. Now instead of TRYING to make things right with us, the front desk walks in the back room hands me a piece of paper with a full refund, and then disappears to the back. As my wife and I sit in the lobby in disbelief and slightly buzzed, our friends at the bar extend an invitation to stay with them in their room instead of driving. We weren't going to rain on anyones V-day night, so we declined and drove all the way back to Phx. We were treated so horribly it turned my stomach. They didn't do a SINGLE thing to make it right. We got the here's a refund.....get out treatment. I wrote letters to the head office and the staff twisted their story to the corporate office. Why? Because they violated several liquor laws. (I'm a bar owner) Book us another night on the house? Buy us dinner? Take responsibility of your mistake? Nope none of that. Send the intoxicated customers on the road back to Phoenix, just get them out of the hotel. read more

My husband and I just got back from a weekend getaway at Kohl's Ranch. We went for our anniversary, and I couldn't be happier with the experience. First of all, the staff were fabulous. They treated us like we were at a first class resort. They were extremely nice and helpful, and not in a fake way like other hotels. They seemed truly genuine. Since it was our anniversary they gave us a card and a plate full of chocolate chip cookies. It was such a cute surprise. Our room was perfect, and we were so impressed with the lodge. The decor was impressive, and we were delighted to see all of the activities that were available. We played bingo, ate smores by the fire pit (they have smore kits at the front desk for only $1!), ate a great dinner at the steakhouse, played putt-putt golf, walked by the creek and even enjoyed live music that they had in the saloon on Saturday night. There was even more that they had to offer but you get the point :) It was just such a relaxing getaway. There was no cell phone service, but that was a great thing. It was so nice to unplug (although they do have free WiFi and offer free calls anywhere in the US from your room lol). This place is perfect for people like me who don't love to camp but still want to enjoy an "outdoor" getaway in the woods. Thanks Kohl's Ranch, we will definitely be back! read more

Long drive from Phoenix to get there (2 1/2 hours), but once you're there, it's the perfect getaway! Smooth check-in with friendly staff, our room was ready, we were splashing in the pool within 20 minutes! The studio needs some updating/remodeling, but a room with a mini fridge, stove, microwave, and sink is a "thumbs up" in my books. Since it's a small sized lodge, 66 rooms total, we didn't have any problems with crowds. Fun for people with kids because there's so much to do: the pool, putting green, basketball, volleyball, jungle gym, and horseback riding. We didn't try their food at the restaurant or Saloon since we ate out. The only disadvantage is the late check-in (4 pm) and the early check-out (10 am) times. read more

Never got to eat there, called and was told they open for breakfast at 8am, got there at 8:05 and was told they don't open until 8:30. Well , okay Asked when they close and was told at 1, I asked is that 1am or 1 pm, was told 1am so we showed up at 2 pm for lunch & they were closed. So sure enough the hotel sold out and I was unable to upgrade. Still frustrated that this location would refuse to allow me to upgrade days in advance to secure the larger room. That being said, the lodge itself is very nice. Everyone is friendly in the complex. The complex itself is great for families. I will take my family back and ensure I book the cabin up front. The one thing I did think was weird was that the front desk came knocking on my door at 10 am just to see if we were still in our room. I would think front desk would communicate to housekeeping ahead of time. They just wanted to know who was still in the rooms. read more

This place was great. We only stayed one night and didn't get a chance to check out all there is to do but I plan to go back. All things considered I cannot believe this place doesn't have more reviews and more great ones at that. Complaining about the beds being too soft? Stay home! The people were extremely nice, the place was gorgeous, the pool and spa were spotless and fun. The rooms were amazing and we got a great last minute deal. I loved having a little porch off our room to have coffee on in the morning! The surrounding forest is beautiful also and worthy of all sorts of exploration. Stay here!! We stopped by Kohl's Ranch to stay for over a holiday weekend. The rooms are nice, the staff very friendly and ready to assist. The grounds are very family friendly with lots of activities for those with children; volleyball, basketball, an enormous chess set with giant pieces that the kids move around. Nearby are various trails near streams and the forest. The restaurant was very good. The fish fry on Friday's was very good. Breakfast is served on the weekends but not during the weekdays. read more

My friend and I stayed here over the weekend and had a fantastic time! I give it 5 stars because it met my expectations. This is not a super-high class downtown resort; rather it is a clean place with a unique rustic history. It has been remodeled and there are two different room types; cabin by the creek which is newer and the original lodge room. The staff was honest about the restaurant - not very good. The staff was also friendly and extremely helpful. They have horse stables on the grounds, cool pool area and places for kids to run around with lots of games and playground gear. This place is near Tonto Natural Bridge Park and numerous hiking areas. I would return. Bring your own food to grill and eat - the nearest grocery store is about 14-17 miles away. Solid! read more
