*1/5 stars - very disappointed Our stay at Kohls Ranch cabins in Payson, Arizona, was an absolute disaster. The cabin was infested with spiders - we're talking dozens. It was like they were waiting for us to arrive. We tried to make the best of it, but the bugs were everywhere. But that wasn't even the worst part. The refrigerator stopped working altogether, leaving us with warm drinks and spoiled food. When we reported the issue to management, they brought us a mini refrigerator that could barely even hold our drinks. We had to throw away over a hundred dollars in food that had become warm due to it not working. The cabin itself was okay . The overall experience was disappointing and stressful. We also had issues with the one bbq that was shared between 3 cabins it would not light... again, we had to call management. *Tips for improvement:* 1. Exterminate the spider infestation 2. Maintain functional appliances 3. Respond to guest concerns 4. Leave at least one cabin open for emergency situations like this. We are extremely disappointed with our expirence. This was sapose to be our summer family vacation with our children, but it was cut short because there were no other cabins available. I hope Kohls Ranch can fix these issues because this literally ruined our summer vacation, not to mention our time and money wasted. read more

We only visited the saloon while waiting for horsebackriding & we decided to order a little snack. What came out were the biggest desserts we've ever seen! Could hardly finish them! They were both delicious too! Four people could have split one easily. The server/bartender was also as sweet as can be. We left thinking it would be a nice place to stay over sometime. read more

Came for a wedding. Was super excited. Website said all internet work would be completed by 7/23. I went 8/19 so perfect. Not. This place is great if you don't need cell service or WiFi. This was not my case. I needed to be able to get texts and upload stuff. Had to leave to do that. Also the restaurant is closed early week so you have to drive back to town (this wasn't explained till check in). Over all I don't think I'd go back due to not being able to connect. I was/am seriously disappointed by my whole visit as I had wanted to visit here for well over thirty years. Finally did and it was a MAJOR disappointment. Hope your stay is better. Rooms have a great set up with a kitchen etc. cable tv sucks with like ten channels. No streaming obviously. But they have free dvds. read more

This spot is absolutely adorable; however, unfortunately I have some big disappointments that really need addressed. 1) pet rules--i almost cancelled my reservation before even staying. Being a good guest, I called beforehand to see if my dog could come with me as I noted that many of the third party bookings allowed pets. I was told that my dog was not welcome because I was not a "member". Much to my disgust, I noted many many dogs while I was there. Why can a member bring their dog, but I couldn't?! This is poor management if you ask me. Make the rules the same. 2) the food at the restaurant is a huge fail--I had chicken strips...how do you mess up chicken strips?! They were completely bland and tasteless. 3) The place was not clean upon arrival. This isn't exactly a cheap hotel--get cleaning staff that know what they are doing. Dust everywhere. Something sticky on the patio furniture, outlets that don't work. 4) Investing in smart TVs would be appreciated. 5) A checkout time of 10am, with only a 30min extension (unless of course I am a "member"). This is a big ridiculous, especially being of the Hilton brand. 6) Lastly, if this a Hilton branded hotel, why do I not get Hilton points for staying here? Ultimately, there is a lot that needs to be done here. As for the positives, beautiful location and lodging. Great amenities as far as heated pool, hot tub, mini golf, etc. read more

Beautiful property. Cabins and tidied. Stayed in a studio - fridge, stove, dishwasher, micro. Awesome! Pool and jacuzzi were amazing, music and a drink at the saloon. Putting green, playground, cornhole, bbq's. Really cute! Zane gray resteraunt was ok. Nothing amazing but ok. Hubs says don't order the steak. Pizza was other worldly tho. Just a really nice vibe. Room was beautiful! Clean and smelled lovely. Back patio area was nice. Hotel lobby has computer and land line. WiFi is spotty tho and tv is no cable but you can bring a dvd or 2 I guess. Staff and other guests are friendly and helpful. Had a lovely experience and look forward to coming back with the grandkids. read more

We arrived on Sunday Sept 7th for 3 nights in one of the older 2-bedroom cabins with a full deck facing the creek. While unloading the car, I placed the ice chest by the cabin fridge and saw what I thought were dead bugs around the back side. I did not give it attention as the cabins are dimly lit at night. After going to bed, we heard noises and dismissed it to the cabin settling or critters under the cabin trying to get in. We have stayed in these cabins before, and I did not recall hearing those noises. The next morning when we walked into the dining/kitchen area, we saw two mice scrambling across the floor. One went down the hall and the other under the stove. I then inspected the cabin with a flashlight and discovered what I thought were dead bugs the night before were mouse droppings. Shortly after that, one mouse ran over my wife's foot, and she screamed while running out the front door. We informed the front desk, and they moved us to one of the newer mobile cabins at the south end. We packed our things all the while watching the mice scurry around their various hiding spots. As we were moving our things into the newer mobile cabin I noticed mice droppings on the kitchen inside window ledge. At that point I stopped and looked around with a flashlight. I found mice droppings and dried urine in the furnace closet and elsewhere. There was trash and droppings down a floor vent. The floors were not clean, and trash was scattered outside, not appealing. One bathroom floor looked like it had never been wet cleaned for some time. At this point my wife and I had seen enough. We decided to terminate our anniversary plans and go back home. The front desk gave us a refund for the remaining nights and said they would address the issues. It is too bad as we have enjoyed our stays in these older cabins in the past years. It appears the cleaning crews are doing the least possible and ignoring the obvious. Hantavirus is a serious issue and guest health should be number one. read more

My check-in was easy, after I was connected to their WiFi. There were families playing games in the lobby. Parking was straight forward. My room 110 is exactly what I expected, except better - it has a faux fireplace . Since I am in the main lodge, there were no mouse droppings (per some other reviews.) The kitchenette has dishes, silverware, frying pans, a small refrigerator, dishwasher and a two burner stove top. Plus, there are gas grills with utensils in the room. We just spent 2 wonderful nights at Kohls Ranch. We had one room at the lodge, a 1-bedroom cabin, and a 2-bedroom cabin. I, personally, stayed in the 2-bedroom cabin (308) and it was absolutely beautiful. Couldn't have asked for a better location either. The cabin was very large and spacious. One bedroom had a king size bed with an attached bathroom that had a walk in shower and a deep soaking tub. The only "complaint" here would be that the walk in shower was a little small, but it still got the job done. The second bedroom had 2 queen beds and lots of room. There was a second bathroom with a tub/shower combo. Then there was a living room (with a pullout sofa bed), dining room (with a table and 8 chairs), and full kitchen. Very spacious accommodations. The only "negative" thing i can think of is that the internet is very spotty. However when you're staying in a cabin on the creek in the middle of all that beautiful nature, it didn't detract from our stay at all. It was a little annoying trying to coordinate with the rest of our party, but using the room-to-room calling was helpful. There are also ALOT of things to do on the grounds of the lodge. Volleyball, basketball, pickleball, a putting green, a playground, horseshoes, cornhole, bocce ball, a pool and hot tub, a big fire pit, a checkers board in the lobby, and on site restaurant (which is absolutely delicious). Plus nearby horseback riding, hiking trails, a paleo site, and the Tonto national forest fishery... there's literally so much to do if you don't wanna just sit on your patio and listen to the birds and creek... plus Payson isn't that far away if you wanna drive into town for some antique shopping. The staff is very friendly and knowledgeable. I cannot wait to go back and spend more time in this area. Maybe even celebrate thanksgiving or Christmas up there. read more

Walks on the beautiful property, Frisbee Golf, giant chess board, pool, spa, stable, basketball, bbqs, and many more. Like a dirty motel. We've stayed at Khols ranch before and it was always nice and clean but this was terrible. This was our anniversary weekend. First, we got there and they gave our room away to a club member even though we paid for it. They acknowledged our room was given away when it wasn't supposed to be so we got "upgraded" to a large cabin. We got to our cabin and it was pretty dirty. Dog hair all over the carpet and couch. Dirty table with food and crumbs left on it. Dirty stove. Cracked dirty microwave. Dirty kitchen floor. Moldy shower. Con webs on the lights and walls. And the best part, a bedroom with HAIR on the pillow and a napkin left on the floor. We went through an entire canister of wet wipes cleaning the entire kitchen and living room. We moved to the second bedroom which was cleaner. We lint rolled couch and swept the kitchen. We covered the couch with blankets and towels so we didn't get hair on us. I texted the manger and he sent a cleaning crew but we had already cleaned up the kitchen, living room and switched bedrooms. They came and vacuumed to get the dog hair up. It felt like being at a dirty motel. Guess Kohls ranch has lost its touch. read more

Warning, do NOT book here! We booked on Booking.com and had to cancel due to a family emergency and Booking.com said that it was up to the lodge to refund us. This has always been a nice little getaway for me. Kohl's Ranch is just over an hour drive from the Valley and is hidden within the Tonto National Forest off the 260 (north of Payson). Christopher Creek, Tonto Creek, a fish hatchery, the Mogollon Rim and plenty of hiking trails are all pretty close by. I've even caught an ASU football scrimmage game once at the nearly Camp Tontozona. It's pretty peaceful and you get to wake up to the views of the surrounding Ponderosa pine trees. I love to go for walks at night because the stars shine pretty bright without all the light pollution. The Lodge itself has about 60 rooms. The rooms have mini kitchens, coffee makers, cable TV and a DVD player, refrigerator and wi-fi access (not the greatest). There are a couple chairs on the patio area to sit and relax in. Hotel amenities include board games, a horseshoe pit, a fitness center, a swimming pool, mini-golf, a fire pit to roast s'mores and a big fireplace in the lobby to relax at. There is horseback riding owned by another business behind the lodge. For food, they have the Zane Grey restaurant that serves country BBQ, pizza and some western cuisine. The hours are very spotty and are more catered to people staying over the weekend. Overall this is nice place to stay if you just want a quick break from the busyness of life. It's also a nice place for families with children. Rates are pretty affordable if you book ahead of time. read more

What a wonderful place. Living in the valley for 15 years I had never heard of this place. Needing a respite from my daily life I ran away up north for a long weekend, hoping to find a place in the forest. I was fortunate to find this place the day of and book a long weekend. I was pleasantly impressed and the friendliness, professionalism and kindness of the staff. The hotel has a cabin feel to it. There are a few cabins on the property with more room for larger families. But, I would not mind renting it for myself or a weekend away with the husband. I was alone during the first half of my stay and felt safe at all hours. There were several weddings happening during my weekend stay. The room was on the "small" side BUT perfect for one or two people. The room had a comfortable king size bed with comfy pillows. I found the room very clean. The room has a large coffee pot, toaster. Fridge/freezer and microwave. Coffee is provided along with ceramic mugs and drinking glasses. Pool towels are provided as well. The room did have that old musty smell and the hotel carpet was a bit sticky. My feet were black from walking on it barefoot. The hotel could do with removing the carpet and opt for hardwood floors. I find those much cleaner. Loved the full size hair drier and the provided dish soap; dish sponge and laundry detergent A BIG PLUS!! I typically travel with my own coffee press, and utensils but forgot them this trip. The front office provided plates and silverware which is another big plus. The pool is heated to 82 degrees and it is very clean. There is a jacuzzi in the property as well. The overall property is beautiful and not crowded. This trip felt absolutely peaceful. Access to the creek is easy and although we were not able to see it from the patio of our room we were able to listen to it both in the evening and during the day. Went on a few hikes just walking distance from our room. Restaurant on property. The food is eh okay. Nothing to brag about, but it's easily accessible for breakfast and dinner. Or a 15 min drive into town offers more options and grocery shopping options as well. We saw several animals during our stay which was neat. A snake, birds and friendly squirrels. We had a wonderful stay for 4 nights. The staff was very welcoming and friendly. I loved that or studio room had a kitchenette and mid sized fridge with a freezer and dishes to use. The shower was big enough for two which was great! No bathtub in our room to soak my leg injury which is ok. I would have used the hot tub but everytime I thought about it, the weather decided to throw thunderstorms at us. The thunderstorms up there during monsoon season are amazing to watch. I made reservations several months ago. We get here a bit early and have to wait until exactly 4 pm to get a room. And we get a corner room by the parking lot. We came to get out of the heat and I figured since we booked so long ago we would get a decent room. I went I inquire at the front desk and they were not helpful. We will not be back. We have been going to this location for many years and recommended the location in the past to many of our friends and family. However, the overall quality of staff in the lobby has dropped tremendously. Guest courtesy has gone out the door. We felt as if any request from the lobby staff was bothersome, but yet staff scrolling through their personal phones seemed like an absolute priority. I requested to speak to the manager to provide feedback and share my overall experience, but have not received a return phone call. The lodge hasn't been maintained like before we've been coming out here 15 years . The food is the worst it's ever been . We've had dinner the last 2 nights and yuck ! We told the front desk and they apologized saying they have had management continuous turnover. Also they do not serve breakfast anymore. Restaurant is closed Monday Tuesday. Ughh . They have 1 vehicle charger ChargePoint and it hardly charges so get your charge in town . The patio furniture is rotted pretty bad not sure why it's not weathered material like the deck . The maintenance people were always available and on point with fixing the things that needed to be fixed. The horse back riding was outstanding and a great time . read more

I actually didn't expect much when we were booking here even after reading reviews, but honestly had a wonderful time! The cabins are so large and even though they are seriously outdated and need some finesse it was a nice stay. The creek right behind/in front of the cabin is so nice. Great for the kiddos to explore. They have grills, and even though the neighbors are REALLY close it can still at times feel secluded. It is a nice walk around the property! Wish the restaurant would have been open (at least for pickup/delivery) but they were completely shut down due to COVID. Hopefully we will return in the future and enjoy more than a single night stay. read more

Hotel has been declining for some time. Services you expect at hotels like this where there aren't other amenities nearby like simple breakfast has been eliminated (don't even care about cost - just want the service). The restaurant hours have also been declining - open fewer days and reduced hours. According to the staff they can't find help - which would indicate this hotel doesn't want to pay employees competitive rates (which I have heard grumbles about). All of the above would be annoying but tolerable. However the last straw for me was a bed so uncomfortable you can feel the springs and pillows so old and compressed they provide zero support. A room should never be rented in this condition. The bed along with a sink that barely drains and a refrigerator filled with water was the final straw. If the sink doesn't even drain how is the cleaning staff even properly cleaning? You can do the math on that. In summary, a once nice hotel that has become so obsessed with cost cutting they can no longer provide services to guests or even rooms fit to rent! Oh and BTW try texting the concierge (they give you this option at check in) to let them know you are unhappy - nice to be ignored! read more

I recently stayed here for a few nights. I was planning to stay at Pine but the owner flaked out with the booking who was out of town and did not set up adequately me getting into the room. I couldn't find any other place in Pine so decided to go to Christopher Creek. I have stayed here before so decided to try it again. I got there and went to the lady behind the desk. She explained that to get a room you have to book online and said there is a computer in the corner. I ended up booking on my phone and after a few minutes the reservation showed out on here computer. This happened before to me but I always wondered why a place can't give you a room in person or match the online price. The price goes drastically down per night the longer you stay here, almost in half of staying just one night. I ended up staying 4. They are in a beautiful location in the pines and on the creek. They have cabins by the creek and the regular room up the hill where I stayed. The cabins have large back porches so you can enjoy looking at the views of the creek. The cabins have a kitchen, the regular rooms have a fridge, microwave & coffee maker. The coffee in the lobby was so good just got it there. They also have a large flat screen TV but not HD! The bar has nice HD but I was told they have a different system. No kidding. I read in another review that they do not service your room during your stay and that is true. If you need another towel you have to track down the cleaning people to get one. Same with getting rid of your trash if you need to empty yours. This was not a big deal since they guy with the cart was next door. It would be nice to stay in one of the cabins with a kitchen since there are not a lot of dining options in the immediate area. The restaurant at the Lodge is not open for breakfast on weekdays. Overall a decent place to stay with some history. I am sure I will be back. read more

Everything you need is on site, including fishing holes, light hiking, creeks, restaurant/bar, pool, camp fire, etc. We spend a lot of time outside in the recreation areas and the restaurant/bar. The food is very good. It's so good that we've stopped at the restaurant, even if when not staying at the lodge. The pizza is might be homemade and fired in a pizza oven. The studios are comfortable for two, maybe three people. The rooms are spacious but furnished for two people. We are Diamond Resort timeshare owners and came across this place since they were running a points special. We stayed in a 2 bedroom deluxe cabin overlooking the Tonto Creek. The location is charming and in great condition. My older teens have enjoyed the amenities (mini golf, frisbee golf, checkers, basketball) and exploring the creek. We wanted a total "get away from it all" vacation as we lead very busy lives at home. The resort is great and I highly recommend it if you want to relax and rejuvenate. There are grills all over the grounds which we took advantage of while enjoying some of our own adult beverages! Be advised--- internet connection is horrible! You are in the mountains.... enjoy the view and disconnect from the outside world for a few days. read more

I almost didn't have a great three days here because of the negative reviews on YELP. Negative people unfairly wield their pain in the form of unfair, untrue or unrealistic ratings. Yes, you are entitled to your opinion, however your pessimism and negativity hurts you more than the harm you intend. Here is my letter to the GM/CEO of Kohls Ranch Lodge at checkout. (Spoil Alert...it's just a great little place! GO, don't listen to others, GO check it out!) :) Dear Angela and Michael, Before I check out this morning I wanted to thank you for your leadership and for a great few days at Kohls Ranch Lodge. I saw an ad on Groupon for an inexpensive few nights and decided a visit was a perfect escape from the triple temps of the Valley (I live in the Phoenix metro area). I booked my reservation directly with the property to allow more flexibility with my trip (see details later). A few days before my weekend I jumped on Yelp and Travel Advisor to gather a few tips from previous visitors. Much to my surprise, I discovered a myriad of negative comments about Kohls Ranch. I needed these few days of rest without disappointment or drama, so I called to cancel my reservation. I spoke to Anna and explained the reason for my cancellations were the negative comments. She admitted that the property indeed did have turnover and difficulty finding housekeeping staff and the ongoing construction were needed upgrades to improve the resort. She assured me that my trip would be a good one and the team would do everything possible to ensure I had a good visit. So, I decided to keep my reservation and made my first visit to Kohls Ranch. I am happy to report that my trip was EXACTLY the rest and renewal I needed. My experience at all points of my stay was very good and in some cases excellent.
