So the kind of Korean food we had access to was often a bit "Americanized": doenjang stew made with ingredients like button mushrooms, bean sprouts, American-style tofu, zucchini, and sometimes even mixed with miso to soften the smell and make it more familiar to locals. This place reminds me exactly of that era. It's a simple, cafeteria-style spot where you can sit down, eat comfortably, and not worry about tipping or anything complicated. I studied in the Pacific Northwest, but now that I find myself coming to New York frequently for business, this is definitely one of those places I feel like stopping by every now and then. I ordered the bulgogi kimbap and 4 steamed dumplings for pickup off DoorDash. KoFoo was located in the back of a deli market featuring a lot of different little restaurants. There are some seats available so you can eat there too. When I went to pick up the food, the cashier looked a little annoyed. Otherwise, the food was okay. The kimbap portion was larger than I expected featuring 12 pieces. The bulgogi was a little bit dry, and the roll came with no sauce. I ended up using the sauce paired with my dumplings for the kimbap. The dumplings weren't bad, they were on the smaller side. Food tastes like a meal from your grandma or homey vibes if I had to explain it. It's a very casual spot. The shop is located inside a bunch of other stalls. There's very limited seating, so take out is ideal if you're close by. Theres no bathrooms here either. The kimbap and soups are SO fantastic. I crave it. I felt like the portion for the squid was very little, but the flavor was so good. Duk bok ki was ok - I wouldn't say it's the best, but the omlete rice, kimbap, and yuk gae Jang was just so good. Small mom and pop place that serves a variety of food stuff - from juice, coffee, tea, smoothies, to sandwiches, bagels, paninis, to wraps and Korean food. We came for some Tofu soup. The flavor was very nice. You get a giant bowl of soup with veggies and A LOT of soft tofu. You also get a very small container of kimchi and a bowl of rice to go with your soup. (Spicy shredded beef with tons of veggies!). And of course since they also offers Kim Baps - I order a kimchi one! Yuk Gae Jang was good, lots of flavor, isn't it the best quality beef? Nope. But I knew that. Overall taste was on par with other "Korean deli" that makes stews. It satisfied my need for something warm + soupy. Kim baps - kimchi had no flavor. This place is no frills, staff very friendly. We ordered at the counter for lunch. The S-4 daen jang jigae and S-6 kalbi tang had flavorful broth. I had been looking for daen jang jigae for a while now since my recent korea vacation, this one hits the spot and has huge portions. Twice the size of the usual hot stone bowls at BCD Tofuhouse and definitely more affordable. I added rice cakes in mine but they came out more soggy and broken in pieces than chewy, I'll just skip that next time. Soups also come with a side of rice and kimchi. Delicious Korean food hidden inside a deli, conveniently located on 23rd St. Walk towards to the back of the deli to the small counter, which displays a few of their appetizer goodies (kimbob rolls, dumplings and mini pancakes). I tried the kimchi ju gae (S-3, $10.50), which is a spicy kimchu pork stew with sweet potato noodles, tofu, rice cakes and vegetables. It was accompanied by a small bowl of rice and a side of kimchi. The food was prepared quickly (within five minutes of ordering) and the soup was a large portion. It was a geat deal for the price, though I struggled a bit to find the pork in the soup and found the taste to be more sour than spicy. I would definitely return to try their kimbob rolls and other hot entrees. There are a few tables if you choose to eat in, but I recommend taking out (or ordering delivery) as ambience is somewhat lacking. I ordered Soondubu Jjigae, side of kimchi pancakes and bibimbob with chicken and KoFoo Soy sauce for lunch. First off, the good: I ordered from seamless to pickup in store and my food was ready for me when I got there. Timely preparation is so important when you only have a short lunch break. My order was correct and the price point is really good compared to most Korean restaurants nearby. I would also say portion sizes did not disappoint. Flavor was good on the bibimbob. Now, the bad: Soondubu was fairly bland and watery compared to the what I'm used to. Perhaps the food has had to be watered down from its normal levels of spiciness to suit the local masses who can't handle spice. Sad. My friend got the bibimbob and only remarked that the chicken on it was so dry, no matter how much sauce she dipped it in. Kimchi jeon was sad. Pretty spongy where it should have been crispy. The most disappointing part was when there was a foreign meat in. Kimchi pancakes include a batter and kimchi usually, so I called the restaurant just to make sure they don't normally serve it with any meat. I was assured that there is never any meat in it. However, mine had several large chunks of what seemed to be chicken. I'm not pescatarian and luckily not allergic. I'm glad the chicken was already cooked. But clearly more attention is needed in the food prep department. Also, when a customer complains to you, as a manager or employee of the establishment, the first step should be to apologize, not call the customer a liar. As much as you may feel certain that meat NEVER goes into the kimchi pancake, it's a better practice to acknowledge the complaint, and offer a solution. I really enjoy the food from this little Korean food stall. It may seem odd that it's in the back of a deli, but the food is actually pretty good. Their menu consists of a lot of basic Korean food such as kimbap, soon du bu tofu stew, japchae, kimchi fried rice, bi bim bop, etc. The best part is that they have a lot of vegetarian and vegan options which are all clearly marked with a big green V ! I've gotten lunch delivery from here twice, so can't comment on the restaurant itself, or the service. Food is decent! I've gotten the kim chi jigae and budae jigae, and have tried some of the sides as well. The stews are super hearty with a generous amount of kimchi/tofu/spam/noodles/rice cake/hot dog/pork, and solid flavors and spice, even with the mild spice option (lol). I put the rice in with the stew, so I do wish the broth to meat/veggie ratio was a little bigger, but not complaining about the delicious spam. The stews are great, but the sides could be a little better. The kimchi that came separately was somehow not that good, even though I'm sure that's what was used to make the stews. The kimchi pancakes were decent, but a little cold, which I guess makes sense because travel distance. I'm sure they would be much better fresh out of the kitchen. In hindsight, I'm really not sure why I ordered miso soup at a Korean place but I was just in the mood for it and it was not very miso-y. Kind of just salty. The pickled radish/daikon didn't taste very pickled, which was disappointing. Overall, very good price and portions for lunch. Once you walk in, Kofoo is in the very back. It's just a single counter with a menu board on one wall and pictures of the food over the counter. Think Hmart food court. If you can, take your food to-go or order delivery. There are tables in the deli but they're sticky and dirty, and it's kind of dingy inside. ***FOOD*** Kofoo offers all the Korean staples and then some. Bibimbaps, japchae, a ton of kimbaps, kimchi fried rice, jigaes, etc. I opted for the ddukbokki. My order was ready in 5-10min, and came fresh and hot. The takeout container was packed to the top, much heavier than I thought it would be but hey...I'm not complaining. In addition to rice cakes, you'll find fish cakes and an egg (which I took out) and cabbage, all swimming in sweet and spicy sauce. Like others have said, the sauce isn't super strong, but I think it still had a lot of flavor. I ate my dish as a meal and, honestly, if the sauce was stronger it would just be too much. The large rice cakes were fresh, soft, and chewy, and I really liked how much cabbage there was to balance out the pure carbs. This is a super hole in the wall Korean place that I love getting lunch from. For starters, the price is fairly low compared to other Korean restaurants and there's this one go to dish that I always compare everywhere else. I cannot find the same kimchi fried rice with bulgolgi anywhere so I am always looking to come back to KoFoo for this item. Another notable item would be their tofu soup which really does hit the spot in the winter! I don't necessarily like eating it in the deli because it's just packed with people and they're usually waiting for their lunch to go. For the most part, there's just a lot of hips next to you as you're eating. They up their prices around 50cents compared to their menu so... its not the best but not the worst.
