    Avocado roll
    Maggie H.

3.5/5 Stopped in here Valentine's Day late afternoon and there was plenty of seating. Staff were friendly but nothing particularly memorable, some were just standing around chatting waiting for the rush to hit. I got the avocado roll and sweet potato roll, my husband got tuna and salmon rolls. All were great but again, nothing terribly special (nothing to bring us back again). The restaurant itself is nice and appeared clean. I would prefer if giant TVs weren't everywhere, very distracting but some folks like that.

Overall good - 4 stars. FOOD: My food was good. I ordered 3 tuna based sushi rolls. Two of my rolls were standard type rolls. One of my rolls was a large "specialty" roll. All three rolls had great flavors and they came out fast, more speedy than usual. SERVICE: As usual, the service was excellent. I had a small glitch in the beginning. I stood around in front for quite a while without being noticed. Lots of employees walked by & saw me but I was still left standing. I finally walked in, I got the sushi chef to take his headphones off, and I asked him if I could sit at the bar. Everything was great once I was officially recognized as a customer. I had to laugh, however, because they have a million security cameras all over the place, a bunch outside and even more inside. Yet...despite a million cameras...no one saw me standing around and pacing for 10 minutes. Why have cameras if no one pays attention? Funny! DECOR: The first thing I noticed about Kobe is it's HUGE. The square footage is impressive and they have very high ceilings. They have nice design throughout, lots of dark colors with bright accents. I particularly like the small koi pond in front. No touching the koi (see photo). I also like the hundreds of customer photographs covering the walls in the front entryway. Cool! LOW CARBOHYDRATE: It's easy to eat low-carb, keto, carnivore style at Kobe. I usually stick with tuna based rolls, a simple soup, and/or a meat based appetizer. I avoid large rice portions, mountains of noodles, and anything that might be hiding sugar or vegetable seed oils. I messed up this time though. I ordered the BMW roll, which is GIANT, easily 2 or 3 times bigger than a typical sushi roll. Plus it's deep fried in vegetable seed oil! I knew better. But like a dummy, I ate the whole thing. By the time I got home, I felt horrible. Oh, well. The flavor was great but I should have abstained from large starch portions and from bulky food items boiled in seed oils. Overall, a good experience. I'd go back again any time. -Maxx

    Chicken Udon Noodle

Sushi rolls were good, large size for the price which was kind of steep. Summer roll and Fall roll, were delicious. Yaki Udon with chicken- a little too salty and the chicken pieces were small. The texture could have been better. Service was nice.

Happy Hour Menu 4-6 Sun-Thur is great!!

I give a full 4 stars for happy hour, but the 3 is for the execution of the rolls and dishes. The ingredients were there but execution of the dishes were not quite there. Was welcomed warmly by hostess and sat quickly. Servers were knowledgeable, attentive and friendly without being overbearing. Never needed to ask for water, more drinks, the bill, nothing. It was like they knew what I was wanting before I had to ask! 5 stars for service! The roll that I got had WAAY too much cucumber to the small portion of fish that was wrapped with it. All I could taste was cucumber in a roll that had shrimp tempura, two types of fish, cucumber and some eel sauce (I cannot remember the name!!!) and cost $15. Disappointed. Additionally, the agedashi tofu was a disappointment. The coating was slimy and fell off the second I tried to pick it up with the chopsticks. Do not get me wrong: the tofu was great, coating TASTED good, the dipping sauce was good but the execution was lost with the slimy soggy coating. I know that agedashi is to have some of that texture, but not so completely that you cannot pick it up with chopsticks without the casing sliding off the tofu. Miso soup was good, not too salty or skimping on the fixings, and the QUALITY of the nigiri (had tamago, tobiko, shake, escolar and maguro) was good too. Again the fish quality is sooo good. My only complaint is that the ratio of fish to rice on the nigiri was a little topsy turvy towards the rice. The happy hour is also a great one with great prices on both food and drinks, including non sushi items. All in all, the three stars are mainly for execution of specialty rolls and dishes, not due to the quality of the dishes or service, which was satisfactory.

    Chicken Yaki Udon

The Yaki udon was so salty it was hard to swallow and the sushi had no taste whatsoever. Giving two stars because at least the service was good.

3-Star Michelin Vibes -- Without the Flight to Tokyo!…read more Having dined at Jiro in Tokyo, I can confidently say this spot rivals that world-class experience -- with a warmer touch and a staff that speaks perfect English! From the moment we arrived, the valet parking made everything easy (though I recommend taking an Uber if you're doing the wine pairing... you'll definitely want to savor every sip). We went for the Matsu omakase, and wow -- every course was a work of art. The freshly grated wasabi, the thoughtful pacing, and watching each dish come to life at the sushi bar turned dinner into a full sensory experience. Chef Shiga was an incredible host -- friendly, engaging, and clearly passionate about his craft. And to top it all off, we had the pleasure of meeting Owner-Chef Shigeyuki Furukawa at the end of our meal -- such a gracious and humble culinary genius! My wife and I left absolutely blown away and already planning our next visit. Perfect for a date night, a special celebration, or simply treating yourself to something unforgettable. This place has officially earned a spot on our favorites list!

There is a great variety of rolls so everyone is going to be pleased with the meal. The restaurant itself is tight on space but the dining experience makes up for it. I recommend you beat the dinner rush and go early when they reopen for the evening. Warning, it does get really busy almost everyday because it is just that good! Location-wise it is great because if you struggle to find parking in the small lot next to the spot, you can park on a residential street behind the restaurant and take a short stroll. I'm curious as to what the takeout experience is, I haven't had the chance to order, I would rather dine in the restaurant.

Cream cheese - typical but kind of small Chicken Katsu- crunch outside and not dry inside Ramen- from the presentation, does not look creamy. It also did not taste creamy. Doesn't have the typical tonkotsu ramen taste I've had before. Broth is a little bland. The pork belly is basically pork belly and not the typically ramen chashu pork I'm used to. It was a disappointing bowl of ramen. Sushi- presentation wise, does not look fancy. The plating looks like what you would get at an all you can eat place. Per husband, it was decent good. As for me, based on ramen, I would not go back for that. Maybe next time I will give sushi a try but not sure if it's a god back to place. If you want $5 appetizers, it's worth a try. If you get happy hour sushi rolls for $13 each is not too bad but regular price is about $17 per roll (like dynamite roll.) Service was quick. Recently, I started coming for the food dinner and realized I was missing a lot. Their menu is very thoughtful in each dish has a nice variety of textures and flavors. I will say that their Ramen is one of the best in town. I think really what sets it apart is the broth being super in depth and they grill the pork belly which makes it really smoky and tender. This time I branched out and got the grilled squid as well and it was exceptional. The soy ginger glaze on it was incredible. The only few downsides I think I've noticed is service can be a little bit hit or miss which is surprising how small the places. Even when sitting at the bar, it took a little bit to get their attention. Also, I've tried a few of the cocktails and for the main part they just taste like alcohol with a soda. They sound extremely creative on the menu, but the balance isn't there. Either way I've typically gotten sake as they have a nice little selection. Overall, I love the whole vibe of this place. I always enjoy being able to see people make sushi. It's very open yet. Doesn't get overwhelmingly loud. Definitely my top three Japanese spots in Minneapolis.

Drinks: The Last Samurai cocktail & the Imposter Among Us mocktail were both delightful. Love the unique drink options, and the two we had were executed beautifully. Sushi: Unfortunately, the sushi was a bit disappointing. We had the hotate yuzu, Suzuki oshizushi, tamago nigiri, and the futomaki. The rice was unfortunately undercooked, and also too lightly seasoned. The tamago was alright, the futomaki was very good though. Dessert: The yuzu custard - one of my favorite desserts I've eaten in a long time. Definitely the best thing we had and I would absolutely get it again. Service: Our service was pretty good. I did watch one of the other servers grab soup spoons by the part you eat from and then bring them to a table which was concerning. Note: For anyone with dietary specifications: they offered gluten free soy sauce, and the custard was a vegan dessert and it was delightful.

We had the salmon carpaccio which was the highlight of the meal. It was similar to a sashimi but was doused in a delicious sauce. We then had the squid game which has a much smokier flavor than expected - it almost had an essence of teriyaki and was probably our least favorite though not bad. We went with two rolls: the 2-14 and the Mishap. Both were absolutely delicious. We were ready to order more but our waiter was nowhere to be found. We waited several minutes and then decided to just get the check instead. We recently moved from a place known for its sushi so we found the quality of fish here to be good - but not outstanding and would echo the sentiment that prices are pretty astronomical.
