This place is absolutely fantastic! I've actually been coming here for a few years with my friends for happy hour. Recently, I started coming for the food dinner and realized I was missing a lot. Their menu is very thoughtful in each dish has a nice variety of textures and flavors. I will say that their Ramen is one of the best in town. I think really what sets it apart is the broth being super in depth and they grill the pork belly which makes it really smoky and tender. This time I branched out and got the grilled squid as well and it was exceptional. The soy ginger glaze on it was incredible. The only few downsides I think I've noticed is service can be a little bit hit or miss which is surprising how small the places. Even when sitting at the bar, it took a little bit to get their attention. Also, I've tried a few of the cocktails and for the main part they just taste like alcohol with a soda. They sound extremely creative on the menu, but the balance isn't there. Either way I've typically gotten sake as they have a nice little selection. Overall, I love the whole vibe of this place. I always enjoy being able to see people make sushi. It's very open yet. Doesn't get overwhelmingly loud. Definitely my top three Japanese spots in Minneapolis. read more

I am SO torn on this review. Here's the breakdown: Menu: Their menu options are so awesome. Authentic Japanese food, tons of options, and lots of fun stuff. Drinks: The Last Samurai cocktail & the Imposter Among Us mocktail were both delightful. Love the unique drink options, and the two we had were executed beautifully. Sushi: Unfortunately, the sushi was a bit disappointing. We had the hotate yuzu, Suzuki oshizushi, tamago nigiri, and the futomaki. The rice was unfortunately undercooked, and also too lightly seasoned. The tamago was alright, the futomaki was very good though. Dessert: The yuzu custard - one of my favorite desserts I've eaten in a long time. Definitely the best thing we had and I would absolutely get it again. Service: Our service was pretty good. I did watch one of the other servers grab soup spoons by the part you eat from and then bring them to a table which was concerning. I really enjoyed the vibe of Kyatchi and evening on a busier weekend night the volume wasnt too crazy. Our service was good. Parking wasn't perfect, but far more manageable than expected. The staff brought a warm, down-to-earth energy, and the late-night 9-11pm happy hour was a home run! We wandered into Kyatchi on a random Friday night and had a great time. On a corner with some culinary stars, it tends to blend in but don't pass it by! The ambiance is a bit odd and disjointed but we kind of loved it as it keeps the "hole in the wall" feeling. Our server was fantastic - we weren't sure how hungry we were so we just ordered rolls, nagiri, and onigiri as the dinner rolled on with no real objective other than than walking away full - and he just rolled with us as we went. The sake flight was great with some generous pours but I was disappointed in the mocktails. The rolls were delicious, albeit a bit basic. The onigiri was great and I was a huge fan of the salmon but the tuna just wasn't hitting for me. We were in the mood for sushi so we didn't stray too far on the menu but we'll definitely be back for the hot dogs and a broader spread which I think will help boost this spot to five stars for me. This place is always hot, especially on Friday nights. Luckily we were able to get a table for 5 quickly. The hosts are always very friendly, welcoming and accommodating to my children that have a variety of allergies. They do their best to ensure a safe and enjoyable experience and meal. This place is good for groups, pricing is moderate but reasonable. Parking can be scarce depending on the time, you might have to walk a block but it's worth it. We got some wings, sushi (which is always a must and you can't go wrong) and some momo. The momo was a miss this time as it was very charred and tasted as such. I've been visiting on and off since 2017-18. The menu has a lot of great options inspired by Japanese cuisine. Parking is street and can be tough when busy. The inside is nice and I have always had good staff experiences and recommendations. Korokke - (this was a special) 4x fried potato croquettes. Corn, peas, carrots, kewpie mayo, tonkatsu sauce and bonito flakes. Really yummy almost like comfort food. Tsukune Skewers- chicken meatballs. Delish Shishito Skewers - Japanese chill pepper I love shishito peppers. Really good. Kaisen Yakisoba - Japanese egg noodles, shrimp, scallops, cabbage, onion, poached egg, red ginger. Japanese mayo, seaweed flakes. A lot of noodles and good flavor. Botaneb - spot prawn - unique but not a normal order. More fun to try. Suzuki - (under the Oshizushi part of the menu) sea bass, shiso leaf, black pepper, side of yuzu ponzu. This was my favorite. It was so delightful. Needed an idea for a potluck holiday party and stopped in to visit with the staff. Super helpful and recommended a great combination of specialty rolls and appetizers. I have been here twice, once in 2017 and once a week ago (2024), and I know that their Tonkatsu has remained the same since it looks exactly the same as it did 7 years ago. Regardless, I had a good experience here overall, and I would recommend it to people if they ask about Japanese food within the Twin Cities. For the agedashi tofu, our server poured the liquid after the tofu was brought to our table, which was the first time I have seen it done that way in the Twin Cities. The tonkatsu contained a good amount of rice and meat which was great, but the "potato salad" was bland, which I wasn't sure if it was supposed to be the case. Having some cucumbers and grape tomatoes was good for me, but I still wasn't sure if that was normal. Regardless, I liked it. Other than those, I enjoyed the ramen and the chicken kara.age as well. They were as good as I imagined they would be. In terms of the nigiri and maki rolls, I thought they were overpriced and there were not enough to fill up my friend's stomach. She had to order additional rolls to ensure that she could get a decent amount of food to be full. Our bill accumulated quickly and ended up being beyond what we had expected. One thing I would also mention is that Kyatchi is located in a good location that makes it very convenient for those in the King Field area to go there, including walking. From the moment you step inside, you can feel the cozy, welcoming atmosphere. I took my better half for Valentine's Day dinner. Went on a Friday night since they stayed open pretty late and have also ordered sushi here a few times. Overall, I love the sushi here- it's fresh and there's fun combos. The menu has a lot of Japanese goodies as well- Oniguri's, donburi's, sushi, ramen, even other fusion dishes. My daughter and I visited Kyatchi in the summer of 2022 and loved it so much we remembered it to return almost exactly a year later, this summer 2023. If I'd reviewed it then I'd have given it 5 stars. This summer, what a disappointment it was! We specifically loved their seaweed salad, which had been unlike all others because it contained at least 3 types of seaweed. Between the three of us, we ordered 4 - only they were sold out. Boo. But you know, sometimes it happens... But then we ordered a cocktail and they were sold out of that too. Huh? And then to top it off, our waiter was terrible. He was sullen and got FOUR things wrong with our order. When I pay $250 for dinner for three people the least I expect is that the order is correct. Ambiance is really nice, and service at the bar top is solid. I didn't get any drinks besides water, but I ordered the sake pressed sushi and the Iwana roll with artic char. The pressed sushi was very cool and definitely new to me but the thinly sliced lemon on it overwhelmed the salmon - I probably would try another Oshizushi rather than getting this again. The Iwana roll was really well put together flavour profile wise and was 9 pieces - amazing and definitely would order again! I wish I'd had enough space to try dessert. The service was pretty good, I would've loved a bit more of an upscale approach as their menu reflected that of a high quality fine dining sushi restaurant. Went to Kyatchi tonight after seeing all the great reviews with high expectations. When we sat down and saw the prices I definitely expected it to be good if they were willing to charge that amount of money for sushi. None of the food was very good except for the ramen bowl. Everything was insanely overpriced. We ordered a $26.5 roll that had about $1 worth of sushi on it, I shit you not. It was totally ridiculous. I've been to plenty of good sushi restaurants and this was not it. And as if that wasn't enough, there is a 19 percent surcharge to replace tips that they put at the top of the menu. But I guess that's what you get when there are 2 Mexicans making the sushi. Seriously, save your money and please do not go here, I cannot believe they had the audacity to charge that kind of money for such low quality food read more

Whenever I find myself waxing poetic about a restaurant I love, the voice in my head starts sounding a lot like Anthony Bourdain. If I let this flight of fancy welly and truly fly off the rails I begin to ponder my list of 13 restaurants to eat at before you die. In my humble yet somewhat adventurous life my list would certainly have Kyatchi toward the top. Equal parts South Minneapolis quirky affable charm and foodie-level excellence para traditional Japanese cuisine, with a whacky chaser of baseball, Kyatchi is now a local institution, and worthy of any legends you may have heard about it. A restaurant is a room with food, made and served by people. Let's start with the room. Some would say it's small. But that depends on your barometer. Compared to a Tokyo robata or sushi counter or ramen-ya it's a behemoth. Compared to a super club or Cheesecake Factory, it's a postage stamp. After crunching the numbers I've determined it's just right. A massive inscrutable mural dominates one wall while a bevy of baseballesque Japanalia peppers the space with texture. Midcentury and handmade plates and vessels drive home the point: we are substance but, you know, what's substance without a little style? The anchor of this substance-meets-style amalgam is the food. When you visit Kyatchi for the first time, in the somewhat humble confines of the Kingfield neighborhood, having perhaps threaded your way down 38th Street, through the George Floyd square autonomous zone, and hence, through a historic moment in world history (and I say this as someone who was living in Hong Kong when he was murdered and saw the coverage in newspaper mastheads FOR WEEKS alongside the doomed pro-democracy movement) you may think you're only about to get some good food. But, for better or worse, what you'll find is cuisine. Kyatchi, I kinda hate you because every time I go into a reputable Japanese resto (outside of Japan) in a first-tier world city, like Hong Kong or Chicago or New York, the sushi costs much more which is the insult-to-injury of being middling, or outright sucking. And it's because Kyatchi hasn't lost the plot. The basics are right. The rice is right. The nori in the rolls is top shelf. The fish is choice and fresh. Nothing is stupid or overwrought or preening or reaching. Maki rolls are tight and proportioned perfectly. Sashimi, nigiri, and the dangerous territory of "specialty rolls" are restrained and austere. There's not a speck of cream cheese on the premises...except for in the homemade miso-carmel cheesecake which you should devour. And that's just the tip of the iceberg. Kaiso salad, kara-age (chicken or tofu), kaisen yakisoba, begging them to bring back the buttery tara shiro miso yaki, and bizarrely, perfectly the best hot dog you'll ever delectably parse down your lucky gullet (not even gonna explain why they have effing hot dogs). And now the people. Kyatchi is owned not by a restaurant group or corporation or AI but a brother-and-sister team. And yes their friendship with a certain ubiquitous Mpls restauranteur (she-who-shall-not-be-named) nudged the project forward in its early days, this small business is still importantly small, and importantly heartfelt. The staff is aloof and efficient and cool, front and back house. And at the end of the day you are a person too. So come experience the best of us at Kyatchi. Check your ego at the door, eat, drink, laugh, and exist outside of time for a little while. read more

Where do I begin?!?! Drool worthy and sustainable food, amazing service, fantastic prices, and chill vibes! Their happy hour is amaazing! It's daily 4-6 pm and 10 pm-12 am, I love this because it's most happy hours are Monday-Thursday and difficult to for me to get to after work. I also like the atmosphere. It's bright, intimate, and they play really good music (Alina Baraz, Russ vibes). The servers were also very sweet! We split the Kara-age $5.50 on the happy hour menu, what a deal! It's gluten free and doesn't give you too much of that yucky deep fried food taste. I ordered the Yakisoba Dog $10 and as a hot dog feign, this is a 3 thumbs up! It packed plenty of flavor and everything was perfectly cooked. It also comes with a scoop of potato salad. I'll definitely be frequenting Kyatchi for happy hour! read more

I came here solo for happy hour as I had about 45 min to kill before an event after work. I normally don't do sit-down places solo, but this was a very refreshing experience. I was the first one in the restaurant about a half and hour after opening in the afternoon. I opted for the end seat by the bar and was welcomed by the bartender. I asked him for recommendations on their HH sake and he described each one and offered to let me sample both to see which I would prefer. One was a light, fruity, but dry sake, and the other one was a sweeter, unfiltered sake. I tried both and ultimately decided that I liked the dry one better, as I was going to have food with it. I really appreciated the time he took to tell me about each one and offered a sampling. For food, I read good reviews about the Chirashi bowl, so I ordered that. As other reviews have said, it was a good portion for HH with lots of ingredients, although the fish could have been fresher. There were 3 pieces of sashimi that looked like sockeye salmon, yellow tail, and maybe a slice of tuna (the color was a little off, so I'm not sure). There was also tobiko/masago, lump crab mix, tofu, pickled yellow radish, pickled bamboo shoots, carrot, cucumber slices, avocado, sprouts, pickled ginger and wasabi over a bed of sushi rice. Overall, the bowl was very good. The different ingredients added a ton of flavor and I only used soy sauce for the sashimi pieces. This would have been a 5-star review if the fish was fresher. The service was great and I was able to be in and out of there in 40 minutes, though I took my time. The HH prices are unbeatable. I hope to come back here for dinner to try other options and hopefully the fish will be more fresh. read more

I had high expectations for my hot dog, especially topped with gooey mayo and my favorite peppers ever! Shishito! But no, the toppings were bland, and even the meat was a warm, mushy let down. I had this place bookmarked for a while. I'm always on the hunt for uni and Kyatchi has it on their menu. My husband and I had reservations for our date night, and had plans to order just about everything on the menu. We were seated quickly in the corner by a window, which was a great cozy spot, but drafty, and it's winter so I kinda wanted to eat with my down jacket on. The space is cool though, lots to look at, sort of an eclectic Japanese design. We ordered the Gyu Tataki, Chirashi, House Dog, and Uni. The beef tataki was good, but in desperate need of more acid, either lime or ponzu sauce would have made it spectacular. The chirashi bowl was a lovely assortment, everything was fresh, and the sushi rice was cooked perfectly. This bowl was the highlight of the meal. The uni was, sadly, bland. You already know I didn't like my hot dog, it needed some sort of pickled radish. Service was excellent. I'd maybe give this place another shot sometime, but it was an average experience. read more

We were immediately greeted with excellent service and had a very knowledgable server who even spoke fluent Japanese. We ordered the tsukune soup, tontoro and gyuhire kushimomo, sake oshizushi, hotate yuzu rolls, and a tiramisu cake for dessert. With the exception of the gyuhire, everything else tasted between good and excellent. The ika shogayaki in particular was very well presented, and the ika actually tasted like squid and not rubber. The prices were definitely on the higher end, and in my opinion the value really depends on what you order. I say you can't really go wrong with the sushi and sashimi platters, the ika shogayaki, and many of the skewers. read more

So I met my neighbors during National Night Out last night and they recommended Kyatchi. Dang, neighbors have good taste. Tried it out tonight and it is awesome! 5 stars well earned. Where to begin... Our kind and attentive server recommended the broccolini gomae as a small plate starter. Dang, she has good taste, too. Basically, broccolini with a savory sesame paste dressing. I loved it so much I immediately started googling recipes for it while sitting there. I need more of this in my life ASAP. I also got the veggie ramen which met all my expectations for a hot yummy bowl of noodles with a miso broth. It had scallions, fresh corn, wakame, and bamboo. The spicy seasoning that comes with it is key, so pour it on. My date ordered the kaisen yakisoba and 2 salmon nigiri, also recommended by our server, and he was pleased with everything. The yakisoba was flavorful with scallops, shrimp, poached egg, some veggies, and Japanese mayo on top. He cleaned every last sesame seed off his plate. As an added bonus, the interior decor is eclectic but thematic along the lines of baseball, Japanese inspired art, and fish lanterns. Coincidentally, a diagram of the Emily Johnson art piece "Niicugni" was hanging on the wall which I saw in a traveling art exhibit at a museum in Santa Fe earlier this year. Pretty cool. I posted lots of pictures because there weren't many of the menu, and there's always room for more yummy food pics. I'll absolutely be coming back here to sample more of this delicious menu. I wanted to try the pressed sushi, but the hot dogs on the menu caught my eye and last minute ordered a hot dog with avocado and egg. Pretty pricey for a hot dog ($13) but there was an entire avocado on it, so, at least they don't skimp on the avocado. My main complaint is that they didn't season the avocado, so it was relatively bland. It also didn't lend much texture-wise, basically mush on mush with the egg salad underneath. The side potato salad was also just okay and slightly under seasoned. My friend got the pork belly ramen that he said was fine, but again, not particularly noteworthy. This was our second visit to Kyatchi in Minneapolis. At our first visit, we were seated at the back of the restaurant immediately next to the kitchen door and 3 feet from the prep kitchen. The place was busy with dinner guests. The staff traffic swinging through the kitchen door, plus the smoke and odors coming from the prep area covered us like a rain cloud. With no other table available, we got up and left. But we were curious, driven by the great reviews we read. So, we tried again, requesting a table away from the kitchen and prep area. This time we were seated at the front of the restaurant. Perfect. So, we stayed and took the time to soak up what is Kyatchi. Kyatchi Minneapolis is a conundrum. There are no shoji screens. There is no Noren gracing the front entrance. There is no shamisen or shakuhachi music to set the mood for a quiet, relaxed dining experience. Its eclectic decor --with an odd combination of baseball jerseys, cloth hangings with ukiyo-e and other images, a large mural on one wall, and a full-length curtain at the entrance (presumably to keep out the cold when the front door is opened)-- is not what one might expect for a highly-rated Japanese restaurant. It's kinda funky. Very noisy. Very busy. The staff is great; very welcoming and appreciative of your visit. The oshibori provided as soon as you're seated is customary in Japan, but a rare gesture of welcome in Minneapolis, at least in my experience. The menu is inventive and very much worth exploring. We had 3 dishes. A Kappa roll, which was delicious that include a surprise perilla leaf embedded in the roll, nicely tucked in under the thinly-sliced cucumber wrapping. Chirashi is an Udon-sized bowl of rice topped with veggies and a variety of sashimi. It was excellent and very filling. The Chef's Sashimi Platter was nicely presented but several of the fish pieces were not as fresh as they should be and rather spoiled the experience. All 3 dishes came with a very small portion of wasabi and a request for more was acknowledged, but never delivered. We also ran out of soy sauce from the container that was less than 1/4 filled when we sat down. Although we wish Kyatchi was more traditional in its decor, we will be back to explore more of the adventurous menu. read more

This was a last minute Valentines Day move and they did not disappoint. From the moment we were seated until the moment we left, service was on point and attentive. And the food was amazing - not overpriced or overly done hi. - just damn good. I would definitely recommend the sushi and the pork belly tapas. The ramen was one of the best bowls I have had since moving to Minneapolis- I could have drank the broth by itself! And the hotdog?!? That damn hotdog left me wanting to order one to go. Amazing food! This place is great because it has a well-curated menu, but at the same time has tons of options to satisfy everyone in your group. I was visiting Minneapolis to see family for the weekend, and our group of five was super satisfied with this meal! The restaurant was pretty empty for a Friday night around 8PM, but it was Memorial Day weekend so I'm not sure if this was a normal sized crowd for them.
