Tried to call (6:16pm) to see if I could walk in early and sit at the bar but it went to a vm that did not acknowledge the business. So I didn't leave a message. Decided to go early anyway. It was extremely packed. There was no place to wait. I got on an electronic waiting list- I was 5th. It was about 7pm? Billy After Dark around the corner was closed that night so they suggested Flora and I went there. I decided to come back when I moved to 3rd place on the waiting list and it was about 8:20pm. They realized I had a reservation and canceled the waitlist and I was given a choice of table but chose to be seated at the sushi bar. I ordered the salmon carpaccio (again) and the tiger maki (again). Both were great. My waiter Conner was very attentive and had a sense of humor. I talked to The manager who was genuinely interested in the weird journey to my seat over the last few hours as a single diner. We didn't solve the voicemail mystery (we called and they picked up. When they didn't pick (as told) up there was a regular business vm. Strange.) Highly recommend. Will return. Make a reservation early on OpenTable. Or be prepared to wait many hours. Overall, it was decent. The hard part was getting a table, even with a reservation. Still waited at least another 15 minutes to get seated after showing up to my reserved time, so if you're hungry beware! This was, without a doubt, the best sushi and service I have ever experienced. I enjoy new experiences. Before Saturday I had never heard of Omakase. For those of you reading this that are in that boat, it is well worth it. Omakase is a five-course sampler of the best sushi they have to offer. Calling it a sampler does a disservice to the artistry and mastery of the craft that to a very select few is sushi. Bask (I hope I spelled that right) is one such master. My buddy and I came in for a fun visit to the Twin Cities. On an impulse, he suggested sushi, and my instinct was to check Yelp. I'm glad I did. We sat at the bar after a short wait, where we met Emma. Emma is a bright and friendly bar tender who happens to love sushi. We read through the menu and saw that Omakase had a whole page devoted to it. Emma let us know that the chef and cook staff dismantle whole fresh fish frequently, ensuring their fish meets their high standard. That one fact made the decision easy. I wish I had taken pictures of the food. You'll have to take my word for it that each serving was a work of art, some in their simplicity, others arranged with delicate touches of culinary flair. Without pictures of the dishes, the best I can do are two examples. The first course was three different cuts from the same ahi tuna, featuring the leanest portion, a medium portion and a fatty portion of the same fish. Having fresh fish and experiencing such variety from the same animal was eye opening. The other example was the uni. Both of us had tried it at other establishments and neither of us recalled our respective experiences fondly. Here, the flavor and texture was what I was told I should expect with uni. If I had known it was part of the meal before ordering, I probably wouldn't have gone with it. Now, I'm open to having it again, and if it's here I'll enjoy it again. The meal was perfectly portioned for my buddy and myself to feel full, but not stuffed. The flavors and textures were perfect. Words fail to reach the feelings invoked. Billy Sushi is our go-to spot for special occasions and easily our favorite sushi restaurant in the Twin Cities. We recently visited for a celebratory dinner and, as usual, had an outstanding experience. We started with the Deluxe Sashimi Platter, and the fish was exceptionally fresh, beautifully presented, and absolutely delicious. It set the tone for the rest of the meal. From there, we worked our way through what felt like an entire boat full of sushi rolls, and every single one was excellent. The quality of the fish, creativity of the rolls, and attention to detail are consistently impressive. The service was equally strong. Our waiter was attentive, knowledgeable, and kept everything moving at just the right pace without making us feel rushed. There are plenty of good sushi restaurants in the Twin Cities, but Billy Sushi remains our favorite. Came here on a Monday evening with a 5:30 pm reservation and we were seated immediately. Our waitress seemed pretty knowledgeable about the menu and offered to answer any questions we had! The dumplings were average but the tuna appetizer was amazing!! We spilt 4 rolls and they were delicious, and you could tell the fish was quality! We've eaten at Billy Sushi twice now, and I intentionally waited to write my review. It definitely is one of the best sushi restaurants here in the Twin Cities, if not THE best. I will admit, it's a bit too fancy for me sometimes. And the price matches. But it has been a delightful and delicious dining experience both times, so who am I to complain? I really want to come back and do the omakase sometime. -Cocktails: They have this whole big explanation about how they take special care in the curation of their cocktails, and I have to say, they are pretty great. I got the Party Girl this last time and it was good but pretty boozy. The gold flak on the top of it was a bit over the top for me, but whatever. My friend got the Raspberry Beret, which was delicious and obviously appropriately themed for Minneapolis and being down the street from First Ave. The restaurant also has an impressive selection of sake, Japanese beer, etc. -Apps: We love the yuzu tuna and have gotten it both times. This last time we also got the salmon carpaccio, which was also delicious. I love age dashi tofu, and this version was good - but not the best (Oragimi has a better one). We found the broth to be delicious, but the one big chunk of tofu was a bit unwieldy, and the coating was a bit gummy. I would pass on that one next time. -Sushi-wise: Nigiri are amazing here - delicious, perfectly cut fish, generous portions, rice that is often still warm. No complaints. For rolls, we love the Big Blue Wave and the Toro Mania. We also ordered the Fancy & Furious, which was less delicious to me but still pretty tasty. Service both times was totally fine - nothing exceptional but nothing to complain about either. I am sure we'll be back. We had a reservation for 7:15 on a Sunday night for two people. We were seated promptly. The ambiance is very cool, I had never seen the tablet towel thing so that was unique thought it sat on our table long after we used it and we were confused about the etiquete of it all. We had the salmon carpaccio which was the highlight of the meal. It was similar to a sashimi but was doused in a delicious sauce. We then had the squid game which has a much smokier flavor than expected - it almost had an essence of teriyaki and was probably our least favorite though not bad. We went with two rolls: the 2-14 and the Mishap. Both were absolutely delicious. We were ready to order more but our waiter was nowhere to be found. We waited several minutes and then decided to just get the check instead. We recently moved from a place known for its sushi so we found the quality of fish here to be good - but not outstanding and would echo the sentiment that prices are pretty astronomical. Had a great experience at Billy as usual. We ordered a flight of nigiri and 2 sushi rolls- the silly billy and number 9. The nigiri was definitely pricey at $69, and although it was definitely delicious and fresh, for that price it was probably just a one time order! The nigiri and sushi rolls came out at different times, and it would have been great to enjoy them together. Our server was friendly and gave us recommendations. The ambiance was of course, packed on a Saturday night. Definitely make reservations at least a couple of weeks ahead if you want prime weekend times. A random Friday, driven by a sudden craving for salmon, led me to wander into Billy Sushi. I was seated right away at the bar, perfectly balanced between couples and fellow solo diners, an ideal setup for the evening. I was immediately drawn to the striking wall of Japanese whisky. Mitch, the bartender, was incredibly patient, knowledgeable, and friendly. With his guidance, I started with their Old Fashion made with Japanese whisky and bitters, then followed it with a pour of Ichiro whisky. As Mitch explained, its subtle caramel finish is rare for Japanese whisky, and I absolutely loved it. I had only planned to try a couple of salmon dishes, but the food was so good that I ended up indulging far more than expected. The salmon carpaccio caught my eye first and completely delivered. The Squid Game was outstanding -- crispy on the outside, soft and tender inside, and packed with flavor. And even though I was stuffed, I had to order sashimi to test the freshness and quality of their fish. Five out of five. On top of the great food, I met three other solo diners, including Lawrence Gilliard Jr., who's currently touring with the Purple Rain musical, fresh off their opening night a couple of days ago. While traveling to Minneapolis this week I overheard someone giving a recommendation for Bill Sushi. I gave it a try. The restaurant is very nondescript and easy to miss from the street unless you know its there. Inside, there is a very modern Japanese vibe with great bars and seating. The Cuz I Like You cocktail was well balanced, and the Ride or Die cocktail was bright and on the acidic side. The Beef Kushi Yaki was tender but I wanted a little more smoky flavor. The star of the meal was the Miso Cod -- so buttery and flavorful. Definitely get that with a side of rice to help cut the fat and soak up all the sauce. So I don't know if Billy's requested my review removed or what but my 2 year old review (that was 2 stars) was just taken down. I'm not sure why but obviously I'm here to make sure my review stays! So - I think the people at Billy's are a mixed bag. A combo of snobby (which I find weird in Minneapolis) or just slow with some Midwest hospitality. I used to get takeout here and would also regularly get frustrated because I'd have to wait like 45-90 minutes every other time. Like, just enough so it felt like a pattern but not enough for me to predict it. Because then every once in a while, takeout would be ready in 15 minutes and suddenly I'm caught behind and have to rush to get my sushi. The handful of times I did eat inside were strange. A lot of posturing. A lot of ceremony. Just all around too sceney for a mediocre sushi restaurant. And the sushi is mediocre. It is, at best, a 7 out of 10 with 12/10 prices. The North Loop halo is working hard for these prices and the people frequenting this place. The last time I went was so unforgivable I've never gone back or ordered from them. Love this place for the fun ambiance and great food. We took our nieces for their 16th birthday and they loved every minute of it. Everyone ordered a different roll and we shared which was super fun. Mom doesn't care for sushi but ordered the teriyaki salmon. Best piece of salmon she's ever had. I requested my roll to be sans cilantro but it came out with cilantro. They made it right by making a fresh roll and allowing us to keep the first one. Our server was really sweet and brought our nieces a special piece of sushi for their birthdays. Sounds like they may do a drink for your birthday but due to their age they came up with an alternative. Really nice touch. I did include on the reservation that we were coming in for a birthday but the server did not know this and asked if we were celebrating anything special when she first arrived at our table. THE BIG: Located in the warehouse district of downtown Minneapolis. Decently sized restaurant that extends back. Beautiful interior decor all around. Street parking available. THE BLACK AND WHITE: I came here with a couple of friends on a business trip and this place is PACKED. Fortunately we were able to snag the backroom which looks like a karaoke room but sat all of us comfortably. This is one of the few restaurants in the US that serves tuna cheek. It was massive and delicious. The sushi that we ordered was served in the boat, which is always a spectacle when shown. I think a few favorite was the silly billy, naughty ninja, and nigiri flights. THE FINAL BAMBOO: Overall, the damage done was pretty high, but it was with a couple of friends sharing everything which helped ease out the cost. We have been coming for many years to Billy sushi but I think in the last few months it's started to lose its appeal. Parking is always very hard to find and we went on a Wednesday night. They have also raised their prices and the sashimi is now $72 while the portions seem to be getting smaller. The service is usually not great either with things like a forgotten drink, not bringing all plates out at the same time, etc. The vegetarian roll is very good especially with the crunch inside. I should have thought through what I was ordering and how much it cost, I ordered enough for four, it was just two of us. That bill was like a lottery win but reverse...but we ate it all and we won't go starving. So parking. Parking sucks. It's a busy area, you're going to circle a lot and probably get pissy by the minute if you have a reservation, just park in the first spot you see and walk your butt the rest of the way to avoid all that. The restaurant had a modern Japanese design, open spaces, lots of noise, lots of people. The bathroom wallpaper is weird, the water is ice cold, I don't know what to make of the vibe it's giving, go take a look. We were seated at the bar and could see the chefs work, I'd prefer a table next time. We were smushed in there and I was seated with a wooden support beam to my back so no space for my legs, and you couldn't actually see what the chefs were doing. On to food, let's see if I can remember everything. The French laundry - foie gras topped with caviar, amazing. Squid game - too salty, but the squid was perfectly tender. Crispy rice tuna - rice was seasoned well, crispy and gooey. Bluefin tuna special - 12 pieces, 3 different cuts, lean, medium, and fatty. Omg, I'd get this every time, each cut was great, but those fatty pieces just slowly melt away in your mouth, so silky. Nigiri - Sake, uni, eel, ikura, and salmon roe. All fresh. I would have liked 3 more orders of the uni. B.A.D & Boujee roll - that rice was perfect and a reminder that not all sushi rice is equal. Oh, and I ordered a mocktail, that biscuit was $10, should have just gotten a cocktail at that price, but it was good. Verdict - I liked it, but next time I'll arrive at opening and maybe I'll have better luck parking. Ask for a table, order less, and don't go to the bathroom. read more
