Husband wanted sushi and I wanted ramen so we decided to try this place for best of the both world. We came around 1pm so there was a happy hour menu (selected smaller portion $5 appetizers and $13 sushi roll (not really cheap for sushi happy hour). Cream cheese - typical but kind of small Chicken Katsu- crunch outside and not dry inside Ramen- from the presentation, does not look creamy. It also did not taste creamy. Doesn't have the typical tonkotsu ramen taste I've had before. Broth is a little bland. The pork belly is basically pork belly and not the typically ramen chashu pork I'm used to. It was a disappointing bowl of ramen. Sushi- presentation wise, does not look fancy. The plating looks like what you would get at an all you can eat place. Per husband, it was decent good. As for me, based on ramen, I would not go back for that. Maybe next time I will give sushi a try but not sure if it's a god back to place. If you want $5 appetizers, it's worth a try. If you get happy hour sushi rolls for $13 each is not too bad but regular price is about $17 per roll (like dynamite roll.) Service was quick. We were headed to MOA, and wanted some casually sushi beforehand and found Kataki after a short search! Plenty of parking available in their attached lot. The space itself is clean, albeit a bit plain! It's not a huge space but we didn't have a wait at about 5:30pm on a Saturday! The servers were incredibly friendly and responsive during our entire stay. The food itself was good, yet nothing to write home about! We had our standard sushi order: wontons, gyoza, spicy tuna roll, California roll, and Philly roll! The wonton and Philly were my favorite, with good cream cheese to wonton ratio, and the lovely cream cheese bite in the roll! They did charge $1 for the side of eel sauce, which felt unnecessary for the serving size. Met up with a friend in Richfield, an area I used to be very familiar with. I was pleasantly surprised to see so many "new" restaurants in the area. Decided to stop at this divey sushi spot to compare to another hole-in-the-wall sushi place I frequent in North Minneapolis. It's a small space, so service was quick! I ordered two chef specialty rolls, the Spicy Girl Roll and the Sexy Girl Roll. Of course I washed it all down with their house sake, warmed. The sake was easy and comforting on a fall day. The spicy girl was tuna based and textually a bit mushy, but cut precisely. The sexy girl was a crispy shrimp tempura also cut perfectly with plenty of ginger and wasabi to pair! It was a pleasant surprise visiting this place because I definitely did not know about it at all prior to trying the food, but it was a wonderful balance of price, quantity, and flavor, to the point that it made my dining experience worth it! Kataki is nowhere close to an upscale or fine dining place but I felt like I paid for what the food was worth, and possibly even more! The highlights are definitely the sushi! My partner and I only got the yellowtail and the salmon roe sushi but they both tasted very flavorful, and the koshihikari rice was tasty as well. I could tell that the sushi was a specialty in this establishment. The price was very reasonable as well, with $7 for the yellowtail sushi and $11.5 for the salmon roe sushi. The Kataki rolls were great as well, even if I knew that the spicy tuna, spicy salmon, and spicy yellowtail combination wasn't uncommon. Someone it tasted fuller and more flavorful than similar items I have had elsewhere. The tonkotsu ramen was solid as well, and I was given a good amount of pork with good texture that tasted slightly different from what I was used to. The broth was only okay, but I know it's hard to achieve perfection for such in a restaurant so I was okay with it. For $14.50, it was worth it! The appetizers such as shumai, softshell crab tempura, age tofu, and takoyaki were also solid, and once again, for $7.5 each ($8.95 for the softshell crab) it was worth it, but they were not as good as the sushi in terms of economical value. The octopus meat in the takoyaki was hard. The age tofu relied on the sauce for flavor completely. And the shumai was a bit soggy. Regardless, they were all solid enough! Once again, I did not expect myself to give a 5 rating to a Japanese food place that wasn't the most well-known for its authenticity or fanciness, but the food was tasty and it made me "feel good" here! I was in the area at the time and was craving ramen. So I found Kataki Sushi and Ramen. I've never heard of this spot, and am always excited when I discover a new ramen spot. Wanting to have a good feel of Kataki, I had both sushi (Nigiri Combo, I forgot the name exactly), and ramen (Tonkotsu Ramen). Every ramen spot I try, I also must try their Chicken Karaage. Ramen Spots usually have the best Chicken Karaage. The Chicken Karaage here was... mid. It didn't have the nice crunchy exterior. It wasn't bad though, but not amazing either. I give the Chicken Karaage a 2.5/5. The Tonkotsu Ramen was... not really Tonkotsu. Tonkotsu is an emulsified pork bone broth. It's supposed to be thick and fatty. The broth here was more of a chintan style, meaning a clear and lighter broth. When tasting though, the ramen actually wasn't bad. It was nice and decent. The broth was flavored really well. The chashu was thinly sliced and delicate, and was savory and subtly sweet. I give the Tonkotsu Ramen a 3/5. With this experience so far, why did I rate Kataki 5/5? Because of the sushi! Again, I had the nigiri combo, and it was AMAZING! Great fish quality. What I love about Kataki is that they add a bit of flare to some of their nigiri. Meaning for some nigiri pieces they may add an interesting sauce, paste, and/or fish eggs (caviar/roe). See my pictures. My favorite nigiri was the fatty belly salmon topped with roe. This was probably the most luxurious salmon I've ever had. It was a big cut, fatty, and melt-in-your-mouth like. It also came with a California Roll, which was ok. Not only was the sushi good, it was also affordable. This nigiri combo only costed around $25. The sushi here is 5/5. I came in for ramen, and came out with the conclusion that this may be one of my favorite sushi spots now. Great sushi, affordable, and good service. We have gotten Kataki 3 times now and WOW I'm so impressed with their sushi! I hadn't heard of it until my brother visited from out of town and suggested it and now it's one of our favorite places. The quality is amazing and the sushi is fresh and unique. I've never sat in the restaurant so I can't speak to the ambiance - we have only ever gotten take out. However we have ordered by calling and have never had any problems with the order or service when we pick up. We have tried multiple rolls including the Spicy Girl Roll, Sexy Girl roll, and Kataki roll. Everything has been delicious and I can't choose a favorite! Hands down, the sexy girl roll was absolutely amazing! Even my brother who isn't the biggest fan of seafood/sushi (yet) really loved this roll! The crunch roll overall was pretty good, but it's not something I would order again. It tasted like the powder and leftovers of a Japanese snack stuck onto the rice. The biggest disappointment was the ramen. It smelled heavily of pork (not in a good way) and we couldn't even eat it because it was so overbearing. We went there with family of 8, we made a reservation for 7pm, got there at 650, we got the table but were missing one chair, one person stood until another chair was going to be available, then one of the booth became available and asked if we can connect our table and whatever chair we had together. They agreed. Then we moved the table and the chair ourselves which was fine, we weren't even served water for another 20mins or so. I had to ask for the water and tell them we were also ready to order since we were all hungry and didn't want to wait any longer. One of our family member is a strict vegetarian and he was served pork gyoza even after asking for vegetarian. I'm not usually picky about services and food but that service was worst I've had so far. So apologies or not any acknowledgment of poor services. We waited for a chair for about 15mins or so then once everyone had the chair, then waited for glass of water for long time as well. I don't like making scenes or complaining because I don't care to get discount or free meals, but hopefully after seeing this, may be they can do better. Would ever go back? Probably not, they just seem to serve better if you're white. Tried the grilled squid last night and it was good, but honestly probably would have preferred without the sauce and just had it grilled with some lemon juice on top. I've been to this location a few times before for takeout, but it was under a different name and I believe ownership in previous years, and I had no idea that it had been update to Kataki!! I live walking distance to this place so walked over during lunch time today to check it out, and I'm so glad I did! The lovely kind staff welcomed me and led me to a super updated and clean booth. There were a couple other people having lunch and all seemed happy and content to be there. I took a look at the happy hour (lunch) menu and decided I'd try the $5 Haru Maki. I wasn't quite sure what it was, but thought I should check out something new. They were vegetable spring rolls and they were done to perfection. Perfect texture, fresh and hot on a bed of lettuce with dipping sauce. Absolutely will order those again! My go-to at a sushi restaurant is a tuna cream cheese, so I had to try it! The presentation was 5/5, how cute with the flowers, leaf and big serving of ginger and cute wasabi. I also ordered a plain tuna roll just to get a taste of the fish alone. Great quality and the sushi rice was perfect as well. I'm so glad this place has a 5/5 and is so close to me.
