If sushi could cast spells, Okidoki Sushi would be working some serious magic. We kicked things off with the tempura shrimp taco appetizer, and wow... crispy nori "shells" wrapped around sushi rice, cucumber, and spicy crab, crowned with a whole tempura shrimp and drizzled in spicy and eel sauces. Crunchy, creamy, savory perfection in every bite. Next came the Angry Dragon roll, which easily stole the show. Shrimp tempura and spicy tuna, topped with spicy crab and eel sauce, all wrapped in a gorgeous pink soybean wrapper. This was hands-down our favorite... bold, flavorful, and just the right amount of heat. The Twin Cities roll was a very close second. Served warm with a tempura coating, it was packed with spicy crab, tuna, and avocado, then finished with eel and spicy sauces and green onion. Rich, crispy, and deeply satisfying. We also tried the Kickboxer roll, loaded with spicy crab and tempura shrimp, topped with a sweet-spicy sauce and Sriracha for an extra kick. And because we couldn't resist, we ended with the seafood ramen. The broth was creamy and comforting, with two large scallops, a perfectly cooked shrimp, half a soft-boiled egg, plus noodles, sprouts, and bok choy. It felt like a warm hug in a bowl. Everything we tried was incredibly fresh, the fish practically melted in your mouth, and the seasoning was spot-on across the board. We'll absolutely be back and will be recommending this spot to friends and family. If you're craving sushi with a little flair and a lot of flavor, this place delivers. read more

My family & came in for the first time to try the AYCE (All You Can Eat) Menu for $34.90/person. Our server was very kind & helpful. Our food came out quick and was very delicious. Okay, another update. I tried each of the tacos today, and I will say I feel like it's a really good deal for how big the tacos are. I ordered to go, but you can look at my other reviews for ambiance and service (both great). Beef taco: this was a lot spicier than I anticipated, in a good way. There's a whole fried pepper on top. Pretty good for a non-seafood option. Eel mango taco: FANTASTIC. Loved everything about this. Delicious sauce, sweet mango, and eel made for a great combo. Shrimp tempura taco: another delicious option. Lightly battered tempura shrimp that didn't feel too oily. A nice bed a crab. Lots of veggies. A+ Salmon hunter taco: I tried this in store, so I already knew I liked this one. This is the only fresh fish option, and it was great. Overall, my favorites were the eel and the shrimp. Oki Doki Sushi has some pretty good food. I have gotten many things here over the times I have visited, but my favorites are the edamame appetizer and the salmon sushi roll. Some of the issues with the restaurant are the limited seating, the limited parking, and the higher than usual price for sushi compared to some of its competitors. I have done the all you can eat twice and it was around forty bucks each time. It is worth it if you eat a lot of sushi and appreciate slightly higher cuts of fish, otherwise I would recommend trying another all you can eat spot because there are others that are much cheaper. As far as ordering regular dishes, I would say it is still worth trying Oki Doki because they do have high quality and clean food. read more

The AYCE menu is very confusing and I hope they would've made it easier to read. I had to flip back and forth multiple times to make sure I'm order from the correct section. The paper for us to write down what we want is useless! We ended up have to write down what it is we want vs putting quantities on an order sheet. I forgot to take a photo of the order sheet. Service was just meh, we would get our food and no one will check on us until we have a lot of empty dishes. I saw multiple times the servers were just on their phones. One thing is must say is the quality is definitely there. The pieces are a lot thicker than your normal AYCE place. Unfortunately dessert doesn't come with AYCE. Sushi really is good - I've been a few times and got standard fair: salmon & tuna nigiris, the eel rolls, the ikura nigiri, the sakura roll, the salmon taco. All good, fresh food. The service is where this spot really suffers. The times I went, they had one person taking orders and running food. There came a point where it genuinely sucked to sit there waiting for orders to be taken because the service was so slow. I did all you can eat as well so you really feel the wait between each round of ordering. One time, the floor also got flooded with about an eighth-inch of water where my group's booth was, presumably from the fridge we sat next to breaking, which ruined what was otherwise an OK experience. They've been open a few years now, and the grapevine tells me that they, Legendary Spice, and Ramen x Boba (in Dinkytown) have the same owner. This lackluster service is therefore sad coming from a seasoned restaurant owner. I'll definitely come back just because the food is quite good, and the lunch special and AYCE are alright deals (not extraordinary but good for the location and food quality). I had Okidoki delivered at work as part of our Foodsby program; fearing any sort of raw items via delivery, I got the Lunch Special (2 rolls), including a California Roll and a Philly Roll. I honestly wasn't expecting grade A sushi, since the rolls were fairly generic and it was delivered, but they weren't great. The rice was dry, even with soy sauce. The pickled ginger was really tasty, though, not the fake pink stuff. Overall, I won't be ordering delivery from here again, but I would be willing to try them in person and see if the experience improves! read more

Very disappointing - 1 star! The latest stop in my on-going mission to visit every sushi joint in the Twin Cities led me to Okidoki Sushi. (I'm not sure how many I've been to so far, definitely over a dozen.) I arrived excited but I left angry. I ordered hot green tea and my usual tuna based sushi rolls. In summary, my one roll selection with actual tuna pieces (seared) had rotten, decomposed sushi. I opened them and I dissected them, Chef Ramsay style to confirm the rot. Yes, I detected definite decomp taste - yuck! For you biology nerds out there, the decomposition taste & smell primarily stems from a natural compound called Putrenscine...the name is as gross as the smell. (Everyone who's ever been near old dead fish or road kill knows it and will never forget it.) My 2 rolls with crunchy tuna "salad", meal type filling were horrible and they tasted fake. I couldn't taste any tuna flavor whatsoever. They weren't pink either. All I could taste was whatever gross plant meal product they use to "cut" the tuna and to create a tuna salad type filling. I'm actually a super taster (I'm not kidding) so I can detect these substitution games easily. I could actually see it in the color before I put it in my mouth. All of this made me very angry about the food that is being foisted on, primarily, University of Minnesota students. Obviously, these students are all on budgets and many are pinching pennies. Going out for sushi is an occasional luxury for many of them. But...what if your luxury is rotten and spoiled? I have many fond memories of this intersection when I was a biology student at the University of Minnesota in the 1980s. This exact location used to have a movie theater and a Vietnamese Restaurant next door called "The Lotus". Many times my friends and I would save up our money and treat ourselves to some simple, inexpensive, wonderful Vietnamese food. Fast forward 40 years. Awful I ordered take out and was astonished at just how bad anyone could make a simple sushi order. The order was incomplete. I ordered a Calpico which was not there. Bummer. Things I ordered: - Spicy edamame: This was a dry spice which I've never had before. The seasoning tasted like a ramen packet seasoning, tangy and salty. It was interesting but I did kinda like it. - Seaweed salad: I liked the seaweed salad a lot! Not too overpowering. - Miso soup: Hot and flavorful. Portion was small but perfect for ayce. - Seared salmon nigiri: The seared flavor was sooo good! Probably my favorite item of the meal. I wish I ordered more of it. - Salmon sashimi: The biggest cuts of sashimi of all the ones I ordered. I liked the creaminess of the salmon. - Yellowtail sashimi: Big pieces and I enjoyed a lot of - Ahi tuna sashimi: This was okay, not the best I've had. It was a bit stiff texture wise. - Poke salad: This has cubed up pieces of various sashimi with cubed avocado and cucumber pieces which made it feel refreshing. There wasn't much sauce or flavor but it was still good. - White hot roll: I liked this premium roll a lot. It had 8 pieces of white tuna, sriracha, jalapeno on top and spicy tuna inside. There were a lot of menu items as part of the ayce option. I would've tried more if I weren't by myself. Would come back just to try the other items. Service was quick and easy to navigate on the menu on what choices we had. We opt in for AYCE sushi, and order a A5 waygu nigiri. We both loved the fatty sashimi and how it was presented. This new AYCE place on the U of M campus hit the spot if you're craving sushi. Some of my favorites were the seared scallop, creamy scallop, and seared salmon nigiri. There were a lot of premium rolls to choose from too. If you're concerned about parking, the location has a free parking garage which was convenient. However, my biggest gripe is how slow the service was. There were 4-5 tables the entire evening and it's a small restaurant. They rarely came over to check on us and it wasn't that busy. We wanted to order a 2nd round but I think they assumed we were done as we waited 15min after we filled out the order. I ended up walking up to the cashier and paying for dinner as we've already been there for 2 hours. Overall, good food but expect some slower service. read more

Okidoki has the best sushi. It's perfect for take out or dine in, although I often do take out. They have a couple lunch specials: 2 sushi rolls for $13.95 and 3 sushi rolls for $17.95. These specials also come with a cucumber salad, but it's tiny. My favorite is the crunchy shrimp roll and it comes in 8 pieces. Service is always good and the food is always prepared quickly. My son went to eat here and got the AYCE. They served him his first serving and after him ordering a second serving of sashimi it never arrived. We checked in with the server 3 times and she kept saying it was being made. This happened around 7:20 pm and after it reached 8:00 pm, she mentioned that they were doing last calls. We ordered two more dishes and they did come but our previous order of sashimi didn't. After it reached 8:20 then they decide to tell us that they ran out of salmon and yellowtail. How did you guys run out of one of the most popular items? It wasn't the fact that they ran out of sashimi that made me mad but rather they decide to tell us after last calls to say they ran out. From 7:20 pm we ordered at to 8:20 pm until we receive notice they ran out. I don't quite recommend spicy tuna, because if the dragon roll did have spicy tuna in it, it wasn't noticeable. I had the Double Shrimp which tasted fresh and great! I went with someone else and we both ordered the fried soft shell crab, hot teapot, salmon premium roll, and bento box 5 and 6. To start, the soft shell crab was old to put it plainly. It tasted rotten when bitten into and did not give the expected flavors. It was also very greasy. The salmon premium roll was actually the best dish, so I'm assuming the sushi here is not bad. However, it was about $13 for a roll where each piece was almost the size of a marble. The teapot was not worth it because it was, to be honest, bad tea. It had no flavor, just tasted like hot water. Both bento boxes came with a mediocre salad, tempura (vegetable and shrimp), a roll, and a whole load of teriyaki chicken on a bed of rice. Again, the sushi roll was ok but small. The salad was ok. The tempura was greasy. And the chicken was the worst part, I could not even eat more than one bite. It is obvious that the chicken was frozen beforehand, and I get it times are hard, but it really showed due to its gummy texture and lacking flavor. The sauce was gelatinous and tasted like it was also frozen before hand or at least store bought. After this experience, we told our server that we did not enjoy the chicken and we were ready to pay and leave. He gave us $6 off of a $70 bill. Generally, the restaurant looked clean and the ambiance was nice, so no complaints in that department. Later, we both did indeed get sick from the food and had food poisoning unfortunately. In terms of the food, it is good-adequate quality. In terms of the service- I'll put it plain- it is not well (they need more than 1 server taking the orders and catering to their guests needs). In terms of ambiance, it's moderately okay. The reason why I wouldn't suggest this place is because of the AYCE deal that they offer from 2pm-close. I came in with a group of 3 at 7pm and we could only order 6 items per "round." Not only did the (1) server take forever to get our order in, it also took longer to receive our order, even when it was just all sashimi for our first order. As a group we paid 120$ plus tip, for just 4 rounds of sushi. When a place offer AYCE, you would think you could divulge your appetite but this simply was not the case. read more
