Came here for dinner during my stay for a conference. I'm not a fan usually of these sushi belt type restaurants, but thought I'd give it a shot. It was far too cold for me to walk anywhere and this was not far from the place I was staying. I was pleasantly surprised as in reading about the sushi train and how it work I felt a bit better about my experience. They have RFIDs on the plates so they know how long it's been going around and then take it off so it doesn't go bad. They had a great variety and there were a couple item that go by on the belt that you have to ask your server for, so you know it is fresh. Not bad if you are looking for decent priced sushi and spending an arm and a leg. read more

Having been to a few sushi train restaurants, (a few in Japan) the prices here were exorbitant. I came, I saw, I left. Went to an all-you-can-eat sushi joint on the other end of town, sushi was just as good. I have no problem paying good price for good sushi, but generally conveyor belt sushi is not exactly considered high-end. read more

Not as good as the uptown location. Sushi wasn't as fresh and the rice wasn't right for sushi - too sticky and wet, and more like cheaper Chinese rice than Japanese sushi rice. And the age dashi tofu was just batter fried tofu with a disappointingly thick batter. Not the delicate rice flour coating it should be. read more

This place still has bad service. It took 10+ minutes to get a glass of water after I had been seated. Water was never refilled. Had a few plates, everything was fine, nothing spectacular. This was my first sushi conveyor belt experience and it was a lot of fun! If you are going to eat a lot of sushi, this may not be the most economical, because those purple plates drive the price up pretty quick, but it is a great way to try a bunch of different sushi items, and also works well for sharing. In addition to the sushi train, there is also full menu of ramen, apps and poke bowls. We ordered some spring rolls and gyoza from the menu, and then went all in on the sushi train! Items are priced by plate, with the purple plates at $7.00 being the most expensive. The sushi was fairly good overall. The only item I had that I did not care for was the octopus role. Not the best sushi I have had in the TC, but not the worst either, and it is a fun experience. Our server was kind and attentive. Stopped by Sushi Train for dinner before seeing a show at Orchestra Hall - the location is great! Easy walking distance (about 1 block). Very fun experience watching the sushi go by on the conveyer belt. I liked that the menus on the table go into detail about what's in each roll. Each roll is labeled and also clearly states if it's cooked or raw. You pay by plate and each color means a different price point. Our server was so accommodating and since our ordered appetizer (not on the conveyer belt) came late, he took care of one round of drinks for us. So nice! read more

My waiter was funny, charming, thoughtful, and knew the right recommendations for my meal (I was the one from Ohio here for the conference). Finally, the place made me feel really relaxed during lunch. Was close enough to Hyatt and Hilton that it made for an easy walk to get to. We were looking forward to a sushi train spot, after being without one locally since we moved South. We arrived early evening and were one of only two couples in the restaurant. Our server was wonderful and the concept fun but the food was simply not good. At previous sushi train restaurants we have been to, we have seen them frequently switch out sushi on the belt for fresh versions. We were there over an hour and never once saw them replace any of the plates, which was a bit off-putting. The sushi with fried items were cold and soft, sweet potatoes undercooked, and the ramen lacking any substance or flavor. The veggie tempura was good, however. Even if we lived nearby, we still wouldn't be back to this spot, even with the convenience and cool concept. We've been coming to Sushi Train for maybe five or six years. In the last year the service has become terrible. One time in the winter we had a server demand we fire our real estate agent and hire him instead. Today we've been rudely told to stand in another area - the rest of the waiting area had only been vacated for 10 seconds. Today our waiter loudly demanded that we order something other than water.My dude, so sorry but *demanding* I do something optional is a great way to make sure I don't do it. After that he couldn't be bothered to take our order, refill water, or take the order for the drink. Water was warm. The food quality is okay. The food here has never been bad - but the quality has been higher in the past. There is one exception - the wasabi is terrible. Sushi train is a fun conveyor about sushi restaurant on Nicolette Mall. It was very busy the evening I went. We were able to be seated at a table after waiting a few minutes. Different colored plates of sushi were rotating through the conveyor belt constantly. The price per plate is listed on the wall. The sushi was fresh and delicious. I wish the rice had been seasoned with a little bit more mirin, but overall sushi quality was good. It was busy and lively and has a fun atmosphere. Seating is at tables for two or booths that can seat four, so it might be hard to have larger groups and sit together. The sushi chefs were constantly making sushi for the customers to eat. Sushi Train is just okay. If you do not eat a lot when you go out and only want a couple of rolls, this can be a decent option. If you have even a moderate appetite though, the bill adds up very quickly and it does not really feel worth it. The sushi quality is fine but nothing special, and it almost feels like an all you can eat place except you are paying per plate, which makes it easy to spend more than you expect. I have tried a few different items here and my favorites are the salmon nigiri and anything with cream cheese. I was not a fan of the egg roll, and I am also not big on the ramen options they offer, even though they are filling. The inside of the restaurant is actually pretty cool, with fun figurines and a nice aesthetic, and the sushi train itself is a novelty that is enjoyable to experience at least once. I would not come here regularly, but it is fun to try if you want to see what a sushi train setup is like. Our waiter was very kind and helpful, so no complaints there. I decided to stop here very last minute as I looked up for sushi spots near the hotel I was staying at. I have gone to other revolving sushi spots but the plates will all be the same price while here that is not the case. The prices range from about $2.20 to as high as $6.95 the workers were super sweet and very helpful. I did like the layout of the place. It's super simple to use. Simply pick up what you want from the conveyor belt and keep the plate at your table. I'm giving it a four out of five stars because the sushi wasn't as good as I was hoping for. I could be a bit biased as I live in another state Where we can get really fresh sushi very easily. It also could be that Minnesota makes their sushi a bit different than from where I'm from. However I still would recommend the spot to check out even if you just need a small quick bite. You can spend a little to nothing to get yourself a little bit of fuel. read more

Sushi Train was a fun place to go to get a quick sushi fix. While not for everyone, it is fun just sitting, enjoying and being able to select delectable sushi based on what's going around on the plates off the conveyor belt. The conveyor belt went around at a decent pace that they kept full continuously. I really liked that the sushi was not a huge amount of packed rice! There was a good amount of fish that was fresh and cut nicely to even out all the rolls. If you're game to trying new things then try the Crazy Cajun roll. That was really unique, delicious and packed with flavor! Yanni my server was really nice, attentive, smiling and talking with everyone. He made the lunch very enjoyable. Merci beaucoup Yanni! There was a great variety of sushi items both cold, hot, salad, tempura and sashimi to choose from. You come here knowing what you're getting as the prices are stated. I even did my 27th and my little sister's 18th birthday here before. This is literally one of my favorite places to get tuna tataki whenever I'm in the cities. Again, I must repeat, you know what you are getting when you come here. The price will vary depending on what you grab but it is still a fun experience. I recently had an issue with my bill the other day where I was overcharged. I do believe it was an honest mistake from the restaurant and it was not something I discovered until I got home. Keri and Robert were both accommodating and willing to listen to my story and see my proof. They promptly fixed the issue for me so thank you for that. read more

The area here starts to get a bit sketchy. Quite a few shirtless, drugged out folks loitering about. We were seated by the back room. Liz is waiting on us. Once wide of the menu is on the belt and the other side is order-able. We ordered a volcano roll, since they are out on the conveyer. Grabbed a Mexican roll with crab and shrimp on top, and spicy crab roll with fried shrimp. Ordered a California roll and added green onion and cream cheese. $80.49 It's a lively vibe inside, the conveyer continues to roll on past. I can't say much caught my eye from the conveyer though. Stumbled onto this sushi boat while attending the NODA conference in town. It's been a while since I ate at a sushi boat and Sushi Train did not disappoint. Sushi Train used conveyor belts to transport the sushi around the restaurant and you pay for what you eat. The tuna, yellowtail, and octopus nigiri were all very tasty. I ordered some calamari but it was just rings. Still, had good flavor. It was a mistake to get the calamari. Although good, it was a large serving for one person and I would've rather tasted more sushi plates. My server was excellent, she had a great attitude. I'll be in Minneapolis for a week so I'll definitely be back. One FYI, the peanut butter and jelly roll, was just PB&J. I thought there might be something unusual about it. This was a pretty fun experience. I'm from out of town and we have a similar sushi conveyer belt restaurant but they're pretty slow and never really have enough sushi going around. There were lots of options here; I was definitely impressed and excited. The conveyer belt was just filled with sushi even though the restaurant was pretty full.I gravitate more towards salmon and there were lots of different salmon roll options available. The server I had was super friendly but I did notice him a bit cold after the bill was paid. Prices varies depending on the color of your plate. Can't complain about the quality of the fishes. Decent sushi place with a very long queue during conference time. The sushi was fresh. They didn't have premium parts like toro but it's still pretty doable. The ramen bowl is super large and made me full on it's own. The dishes came every like 9-10 minutes. I've heard mixed reviews of Sushi Train but was pleasantly surprised when I came. A lot of the fun is watching the conveyor belt go around and seeing what plates are available. There's sashimi, nigiri, and different sushis and rolls available as well as salads (seaweed or kani), desserts (macarons and cake) and even Yakult (which I had to refrain because I can buy it elsewhere). They are color coded by price and a full list is available on the menu (plus you can order extra items on the menu that is not on the train, but we didn't stray from the train). The portions are smaller so it's perfect if you want to sample many things, or if you are new to sushi and want to try new rolls, but don't want a full roll. The costs do add up quick, so you should be strategic about what you actually want and what you don't, but overall, I had a fun time. I did enjoy the salmon sashimi, tuna tartare and the couple rolls I grabbed. It's a different sushi experience than most spots in MSP since it's (currently) the only sushi train spot, and the location is pretty close to all your downtown adventures. Since it's pretty much self-serve (you grab what you want from the train), you don't interact with staff as much on terms of ordering, but they do come around to fill your drinks and pick up your tops. read more
