I was pleasantly surprised as in reading about the sushi train and how it work I felt a bit better about my experience. They have RFIDs on the plates so they know how long it's been going around and then take it off so it doesn't go bad. They had a great variety and there were a couple item that go by on the belt that you have to ask your server for, so you know it is fresh. On the other, the menu has somewhat different things I am still not sure how I feel about. Peanut butter and jelly sandwich (err, roll?) I guess is a good and welcome attempt to expand to more American palates, even if it seemed odd. There were some cakes or something also out that, well, some seemed like what I expected, some others did not. They clearly labeled things on the plate holders on the conveyor belt (never seen it done quite so, uh, obviously, before), and since they have six tiers of plates (by color), they can price things accordingly as well. Not going to lie, even tho sashimi was pricer and it looked like the coloring was doing a lot of work, it was nice to have a protein-heavy option without the carbs (as much as I love rice...). The fried rice and udon have a really nice smoky flavor. The beef and salmon teriyaki cuts are pretty thin but the teriyaki sauce adds a lot of flavor. For dessert they have green tea, red bean, and vanilla ice cream. The ice cream is creamy and the scoops are generous. They do not take reservations. It is built on a tonkotsu base, with a spicy paste and chili oil, their own custom made ramen noodles, and a healthy helping of what looks like commercial thin sliced hot pot beef. The broth was rich in flavor, and makes me believe the claimed 10hr cooking time. The beef was previously marinated, flavorful, and tender. The half boiled egg was cold though. The fact that I'm eating this in Maplewood, across the mall, is incredible. There is nothing even close to this bowl of ramen in this part of the suburbs. I always make a differentiation between ethnic restaurants in the suburbs and the city core. There is still a lot of pressure to dump down an ethnic cuisine in a MN restaurant, especially in the suburbs. So kudos to Zen Ramen for putting out a decent bowl of ramen at a decent price. Despite the claims in the front page of the menu, I could not find corroborating evidence that this restaurant is at all connected to a restaurant or chain in Yokohama, Japan.
