I was on a fun outing with two family members who are teens. We stopped for crepes (which also was reviewed) and since there was no room to sit, we were told we could sit at the adjoining ramen business. We made a full lunch and enjoyed a delish lunch. I initially walked into the Ramen joint on the corner, but it was packed! So I walked down and recalled seeing a burger marquee. I stepped inside, mulled over the menu for a bit, and discovered that there is also a Ramen menu. This made my night because it is absolutely soup weather, if there ever was such a thing. I had the Shoyu ramen, with extra pork belly, as per my custom. It was delicious, hearty, the broth was pretty good! The food came quick, it wasn't terribly loud, and there was adequate seating! My second restaurant in the group of 3 on this corner, and I was impressed yet again! The tonkatsu ramen was the creamiest I've ever had. It was a pretty decent serving size. I got the small karage bowl, which was a good deal for a smaller dinner, coming with kimchi and rice. The chicken was really juicy and flavorful with the spicy mayo. It's set up in a seat yourself and order from a QR code method, which I don't mind. The servers didn't say a word to any customers the entire time, including when dropping off food and drinks, which was a little strange to us. I am definitely a ramen snob! So here goes. The air conditioning is not working well, so for summer in Minnesota that did not create a perfect ramen environment. The noodle is okay, cooked perfectly but nothing special. I have eaten many tsukemen before. This Tsukemen is too sweet for my taste and the consistency is more of a curry than a proper tsukemen. The tsukemen shops typically offer delicious dashi broth at the end of the meal. Add the dashi broth to your leftover dipping soup broth and enjoy the savory soup. This is called soup wari (スープ割り). This place don't seem to offer that. The meat does not have enough fat in it. It is a little on the dry side and no crispiness to it. The egg is okay. Order and pay through an app, and water is self-service. Vibe is low key, eclectic (random) decor attracting an eclectic young hipster clientele. Ordered the Torishio Ramen with Karaage (fried chicken) and traditional Tonkotsu (pork). Pork was better than chicken. The fried chicken was delicious but the ramen base had a subtle almost bland flavoring for the Torishio. Tonkotsu was not bad but not the best I've had. Two sake options. No problem, I can order at the table, but I didn't get to ask about the different sakes available (no description on the menu). My table had no utensils or napkins, and although I was brought napkins, I had to scout nearby tables for a spoon. No effort was made to restock the table. Both "Help Yourself" water jugs were out of water. The tables seemed clean, the windows were clean, but the floor was grimy, greasy and sticky - like walk-out-of-your-shoes sticky. There was *a lot* of chitchat between tall with glasses guy and shorter with long black hair lady. (No name tags) I get it, I've worked in restaurants, but why not take my order and maybe have the opportunity to up-sell? The food: Hot sake was not hot, the ramen was not hot, but otherwise okay. The servings seem smaller and the prices are higher, but that is everywhere. When I eat out, which is becoming more and more rare, I want good food, decent service and a clean environment for my money. Especially when customers can see right into the kitchen! I have been eating here every Sunday for 7+ years, and love it every single time I walk in. Kazama-san is incredibly friendly, treats his staff well, and works amazingly hard to produce excellent, consistent quality in all of his dishes. The service was fine- it's order at the front then a server brings it out so there really wasn't much "service". The egg and chicken karage were the best part of the dish. I write this review 3 years after my summer in Minneapolis to rave about one dish that I'm not even sure is on their menu anymore. In summer 2018, I had tsukemen for the very first time at Ramen Kazama and I was in awe of the deep, complex, umami, rich flavor of the thick broth that clung onto the perfectly al dente noodles. I was in heaven throughout this entire meal. At the time, I wasn't sure if this ramen was particularly good or if it was just average ramen and I was shook by the novelty of dipping ramen. But I live in NYC now and I've tried my fair share of dipping ramens in the city - I mean it when I say every tsukemen I've had in NYC has paled in comparison to this ramen I had in Minneapolis. I've had Ichiran in Hong Kong, which pretty much ruined every other soup based ramen for me, and I would dare say that Ramen Kazama comes close to doing that to tsukemen for me. Ramen Kazama is a hip, casual Japanese/ramen spot. Expect a wait during peak hours. They have a labeled vegan curry, but that's the only vegan option as of 2022. I got the vegetable curry ramen ($15). You can choose between regular wheat noodles or kale noodles. I tried both. The kale noodles are slightly more interesting than the wheat noodles. The broth here is more like a thick curry sauce and not as soupy as I'd hope. The dish tastes okay but also has a starchy texture that bored me after a while. If you want better vegan ramen, I recommend Tori 44 in North Minneapolis, but Ramen Kazama isn't bad by any means. read more

This is probably my 4th or 5th time coming to kazama. I've gone to the one in St Paul as well. The ramen was not as good as I remembered it to be the first couple years of when they opened. Favors were good, not amazing. Noodle quantity was mediocre, feel like I could have eaten more after. I was dissatisfied when the server came up and gave me someone else's egg and I asked them if they charged me for it and they went to "check" but never came back to me. I was just super confused. I have been craving ramen since the start of the pandemic. I finally broke down and did take out. The pickup went seamlessly and the ramen was almost as good as sit down service on-site. The directions provided made all the difference. Boil noodles for 90 seconds, heat broth and add broth to bowl, then add noodles and finally the toppings. This maintained the mouth feel of the noodles. If I hadn't had these directions I would have boiled the noodles in the broth and ruined their texture. read more

These folks HUSTLE. Walked in with family needing dinner on a Sunday eve after our power went out at home. First time in couple years. Place seemed (like everywhere) might be short staffed, as they were encouraging patrons to order from phone. I thought "uh oh service is gonna be bad." I was totally wrong. Kitchen staff were doubling and tripling up hosting, taking orders (when we wanted to order from a human), busting tables. QUICKLY. All with a super pleasant attitude.
