Starving after a long day flying I decided to Kiku takeout and/or delivery. I was excited to see how much thought they behind the packaging. First of all it's always a blessing when either your Uber eats or the restaurant puts in utensils. If you looking for chopstick you will have to request from the restaurant or driver. The to go order had a small piece of cardboard box right above the Pad Thai. It's small steps like this keep the food hot as if you're getting it right off the pan! The order consisted of Miso Soup, Edamame, and Pad Thai. The Vegetables in the Pad Thai, tasted like water. I'm assuming it's probably because they have their vegetables soaking in water for storage and refrigeration (common for restaurants to do). It was 56 minutes prior to close so I'm assuming the kitchen probably was in a hurry to close out. More than likely just grabbed out the veggies and threw them in the pan not allowing the excess water to be removed. Even sautéeing the veggies in first to really soak up in the sauce may have helped. The edamame was slightly under cooked which makes it tough to get the soybeans out. Maybe this is a restaurant is best experienced as a sit down spot and I recommend favoring their Japanese offerings not Thai. read more

I come here pretty often for sushi. If you've never had sushi before and want to try some, this is a great place to start. Any roll with shrimp tempura will be very tasty. They provide consistent service that is friendly. Last time I went, I ordered the California ranch roll, giozas and lo mein. Their California ranch roll is very tasty, definitely a safe choice if you're not into traditional sushi. The giozas are good. Crispy on the bottom, very soft on the top. The filling is flavorful. I wasn't impressed with the lo mein. I was expecting a soft thicker noodle and instead got what looks like a very thin chow main noodle. Overall if you want sushi in uptown, this is a good spot that's open late. They also do online QR code ordering inside. Parking is tough, side street parking will be your best bet during peak lunch/dinner times otherwise there might be parking on Hennepin. The vibe inside is chill, there is no dress code or any dress requirements. I've come in sweatpants and have also dressed up to come. They're never super busy so you'll probably always find a table and reservations are not necessary. read more

I'm always on the hunt for a good happy hour, and Kiku did not disappoint! My partner and I recently visited on a weeknight and were excited to learn that happy hour goes until 7pm! We got an excellent meal and drinks for a very reasonable price. We are excited to return to try other menu items! The sushi was fresh, and service was fast. I appreciated the variety and creativity of the menu. We were some of the only customers there, so we got a table immediately without a reservation. The booths felt very private. If you're looking for a good sushi joint in the uptown area, you gotta check out Kiku Bistro. I've ordered online for delivery many times but decided to venture into the restaurant this time. There's street parking right out front which is super convenient, you just have to pay via the MPLS Parking app. The ambiance was relaxed with low lighting. We were seated next to the sushi bar. Instead of physical menus and a server to take our order, we had to scan a QR code to view the menu and use that same website to order our food & drinks. I could see how this is more convenient and allows the guest to order more without waiting for a server to stop back at your table. But it was a bit confusing as a first time user of this website, especially when checking out and splitting the bill. That said, the interaction we had with the staff was positive! Everyone was very friendly and the food came out super fast! I also liked their unique selection of cocktails. I tried their old fashioned, but it came with rum, and I was surprised at how much I enjoyed it. I'll definitely be coming back to dine in at Kiku soon!!! read more

I gave two stars. One star for the dining area and one star for service. The food was so ordinary and did not taste well. I was really hoping to find a new spot to eat so we gave it a try. I ordered the mango chicken. It's a chicken dish but only had 4 very small slices of chicken in it. It was very bland. Due to some miscommunication during ordering my partner thought he was asking for fried rice instead of white rice with his meal but instead they brought him a second dish of fried rice. That portion was surprising small for a full order of fried rice. To be honest I can't imagine going back and spending @ $100 again. I wanted to like it but just couldn't. We used the delivery feature and our food came hot in 30 min from ordering! We were very impressed. We have been going to Kiku for years and the take out is just as good as dining in. A staple for us is the fried rice that comes with a delicious yum yum sauce. The beef and broccoli is another popular one for us. Our favorite sushi is the California ranch roll which is lightly deep fried. This time we also tried the Lake roll and Goofee roll. Both were good but did have quite a lot of rice. When we have eaten inside, are is ample seating including booths, and outdoor street seating in the summer. The parking in uptown can be difficult and busy. read more

Kiku Bistro is one of my most frequented restaurants over the years. I've loved it since it was Mount Fuji. I usually order sushi and have some go-to specialty rolls that I can't live without. While it is not the fanciest or best restaurant in town, they have always been laid back and reliable. They have happy hour on sushi for goodness' sake! When other sushi places have hour waits, Kiku was always there with better prices and no waiting! Today was the first time we ordered to go (because of Covid). We ordered a Green Tea specialty roll, red snapper nigiri, pad Thai, and egg rolls. I will admit takeaway sushi just isn't the same. My roll fell apart a little bit getting it out of the box, and the rice just didn't taste as fresh. The pad Thai was a bit spicy for me, but my boyfriend loved it. I can't wait for them to open the dining room back up. I'm sad to see some of the negative reviews on here, because Kiku Bistro really has a special place in my heart. read more

It's totally ok, but far from great. We ordered via UberEATS, everything was as requested. They have a fair number of combo meals that aren't too hard on the wallet. The problem is that it's also pretty bland. Albacore nigiri was mushy and clearly frozen/defrosted. "spicy" tuna and salmon rolls were just mashed tuna mixed with what felt like panko, and not even Minnesota levels of spice. The Geisha roll, with some added jalapeno, was the best of the bunch. We wouldn't decline it, but we're still looking for our go-to sushi place. read more

We have ordered takeout a couple times from Kiku and have never been disappointed. Love the Uptown roll- a roll with tuna, salmon, avocado, crunch and no rice. This was my second time here and this time it was on a Saturday night. It was busy but they were able to sit us, group of five, right away. It's happy hour all day Saturday and Sunday! My rating was mostly based on the somewhat poor service from our waitress. She never mentioned it was happy hour, I had to search online for it. So, why did I end up with that? If that's what it's gonna be, then put that in the menu specifically. I've been meaning to get to Kiku Bistro for a long time. But life interfered (COVID, riots, more COVID, etc.). GOOD ENOUGH: Good sushi and side dish selection. The sushi is pretty good, but not special. In the competitive twin cities Japanese restaurant scene, I would say Kiku is not so much good but "good enough." MEH: The dining area smells really strongly of disinfectant -- and I mean the kind they use in bus station mens rooms. (Our table was nowhere near the bathrooms, so I know that wasn't it.) Staff was also jaded and distant. Even with online ordering (happy to say this restaurant uses Toast), a little bit more friendly would be nice. I don't predict this restaurant will make it, and if there wasn't so much of a demand for takeout in the crowded Uptown area I doubt they'd have survived the past year. read more

Ambience It is very dark inside if you come for dinner. I even had hard time seeing the menu. Lighting is very poor. Depending on the seat you have, lightning can be slightly better or worse. 3. Parking It is located on Hennepin, parking is hard. You can park a few blocks away in the back alleys. 4. Food - Sushi rolls: I tried a few different rolls. I liked the dragon roll the best. This place isn't known for its good quality sushi. It is just a nice convenient place. - Calamari: the breading outside was too much, too burns and didn't taste good. Sauce it comes with is just bad. - Ramen: AVOID at all cost. All of their soups are bad. They do not come hot, tastes awful. Just save yourself the trouble of wasting money, time, unhappy stomach and bad surprise. All in all, food isn't good here. Great place to just have a drink and watch games though. read more

Just a note: I only went here for a fast happy hour get together with friends and get some appetizers so I won't be able to truly reflects the restaurant capability. Their happy hour deal is pretty great. They have $3 warm sake (not the best sake but it's hard to beat $3 price), under $5 apps and lots of rolls options. We ordered 2 warm sake, a calamari, and an order of edamame. I'm not an alcohol critic but I thought the sake was fine, it wasn't as smooth and as tasteless as I thought it would but it was $3 so you got what you paid. However, I was really impressed with the calamari. It was $4, I think but it was really good. The batter was crunchy and the squid itself was tasty and a tad chewy. It tasted like the squid they used was somewhat fresh, definitely not sea fresh but way better than frozen squid. I'd definitely recommend this place for their happy hour deal! read more

One of my all time favorite spots in Uptown! To begin, they are almost ALWAYS on happy hour. You can get 9$ vegan entrees, 3$ vegan sushi rolls, and very well priced apps. They have an entire menu dedicated to heir happy hour. I would highly recommend the Kung Pao Tofu - completely vegan. The flavors are amazing, the presentation is beautiful and I never get sick of it. The staff is amazing, shout out to Luke! One of my fave restaurant staff ever. He's so nice, so personable and amazing behind the bar. The service is usually pretty quick. They have a couple of tables outside, and inside the decor is clean, sleek and a nice dimly lit vibe. I ordered from doordash and that was fine, everything was packed decently. i got the seaweed salad and the container was only half-full, the bottom layer was literally just cucumber chopped up and it was a small portion to begin with. the sushi starter was four pieces of sashimi and they were tiny, barely any rice, and the white fish had something in it so i couldn't chew (silver skin? idk). The miso soup had 0 tofu or scallions and maybe three tiny pieces of seaweed. And the soy sauce was gross for some weird reason? which is a weird thing to complain about but I couldn't dip my sushi in it which was disappointing. The eel sauce was good though.
