I really wanted to like this place considering Oceanside had only 2 KBBQ but this place is mediocre at best. First, the self serve style is a new concept for me I can't say it's my favorite; you're charging 27 bucks I would hope to get a little bit more service. Food: Everything had a frozen taste. The meat were really chewy, my jaw was sore for a few days after eating there. True story. Change the brisket it's cut too thick. Atmosphere: Small but clean. If you want sides meats you have to get up and get it. It looks like a cheap buffet cart too. Nothing crazy. For the price it should visually be appealing. Their kim chi and pickled radish was excellent in compliment to the plethora of meats and veggie options that they offer. This is one of the few places in SD that reminds me of my home in Korea. I lived in Seoul for 3 years as a teacher and loved trying all the different Korean dishes there. (FYI Korean cuisine is soooo much more than just BBQ) My first love has to be samgyupsal, which is thick cut pork belly pieces grilled to golden perfection and dipped in the savory sweet samjang sauce. When I came back to the US and had my fill of all the American stuff I'd missed, it was the first food I dreamed about and sorely missed from Korea. In trying to satisfy that craving I visited some other KBBQ places like, Manna, or Gen, but I was frustrated that I couldn't customize as much as I wanted to and that they didn't seem to have samjang sauce or that the pork belly cuts were too thin. But at M. BBQ they got it right and so much more! It might not be too fancy to look at compared to Manna or other places, but I was so used to that in Korea, you wouldn't believe how often the most tiny, "hole in the wall" type places end up being the best. I love the buffet style and being able to get exactly what I want and nothing that I don't need. The staff is great and friendly and they act as typical Korean restaurant often do which is that they don't bug you too often with questions and chit chat but are ready to serve you as soon as you call for them. Sometimes people can mistake that as neglect but that's not it at all, the restaurant culture in Korea is just different in many ways. Korean BBQ is really all about what you make of it and that's very true here, you decide what you want, how much, how to cook it, etc. If you leave unsatisfied, it's probably your own fault. For newbies to KBBQ, I might recommend watching a YouTube video or something to prepare you on what to expect because this place isn't going to explain every little thing for you, you're kind of left to your own devices unless you go with someone who knows what they're doing. Suffice to say, I've found my little home away from home and I'm so happy! Firstly I'd like to start by stating what to expect as soon as you step past the entrance. Prepare yourself to be smacked in the face by a mouthful of foul odors from not just the buffet style raw meat that's out on display for God knows how long but wait if you think that's that's the worst thing you'll smell wait until they try to seat you and your family right by the restrooms. God forbid that you try to explain to them that you'd appreciate not be seated in that area given that you have an infant; definitely a cover them to go back and forward with you all out of the sake not to have to go out of their way to turn on a different stove top for you to cook. Secondly, do not expect a wide range of options from the warm food items, as well as get ready to question whether or not the meat options are even safe to eat after they're all openly exposed with no safe keeping apart from being in separate tubs right next to each other. If you find the appetite to push through all previously stated things just wait until you finally get to eagerly cook the food on the grill just to expect the quality of meat to be below average; very chewy frozen meat that lacks in all sorts of quality. Lastly if you've been around to other Korean BBQs in the area expect to receive just about the same damage on the check for about half , maybe less the service that you receive at other locations. Hell at least other locations have found ways to get creative, overall be prepared to encounter a night of unmet and lower expectations than that you came. If you're thinking of trying something new out of spite of time than choose something else entirely, do not be like our family. P.S. don't expect to really be greeted. read more

I took my gf. Her best friend and her brother here. We were taking pictures at the flower fields and were so hungry we decided to stop here. We walked in around 4pm thinking it was going to be crowded as any other KBBQ would be. But there were only Two other parties of 2 people in there. And the place is pretty big. So that should've been the first red flag. Anyways we sit down and find out that the meat is just sitting on an ice bed freezer. So you basically grab the exact meat you want and the sides and such. Which I THOUGHT at the time was a good idea but soon realized it wasn't. The meat looked like it had been sitting there for a while, had freezer bites on them. Didn't look completely fresh. They did have shrimp there also. So we had a few rounds, the meat is completely unseasoned and I'm not sure if it was because the meat had been just sitting on ice but it was kind of difficult to chew. The don't have rice paper and NONE of the waiters/waitress come check up on you and unless you repeatedly call for them. There are vents that hang about a foot above the grill and it's so awkward they don't even appear to work. It makes it weird/difficult to talk to the people on the other side of the booth. Then two guys that where at the table next to us repeatedly asked for their check. And after 20 mins of not receiving their check, they seriously just walked out of the place !!! Without paying for anything. And the waiters/waitress DIDNT EVEN REALIZE that the guys left and just came and cleaned up the guys plates !! Customer service is beyond careless. And it's not like they were busy. They themselves were sitting on the opposite side of the room just all eating at a table together. At the end of it when we all got home, we texted our group chat and everyone felt sick from the meat!! There are far better places to go for KBBQ this place is NOT one of them ! Just No. I saw mixed reviews about this place and opted to give it a shot - I regretted it the moment we started our meal. If you are a person who has had proper kbbq - then you would agree that this place is so bad. The miso soup tasted old and fishy; and the self serve meat station was abundant - but the quality of the meat was not good at all - there were also sliced hotdog as an option to grill - never have I ever seen that. The side dish section was ok - except every dish lacked serious flavor - ive never had a fish cake that tasted like nothing and was white - they should be bursting with flavor and of a brown color. The "steamed egg" also came out flavorless - not even a pinch of salt in it - there was however plenty of vegetable oil floating around the bowl - it looked more like greasy undercooked egg soup. And what kbbq place not have or even serve rice paper ? - Staff was nice and attentive - place was empty on a Sunday afternoon. The price is way too high for the quality of the food. The meat was still frozen and the miso soup was very bland. Also, their times are very weird. They advertise lunch ending at 3:30 and dinner starting at 4:30. We came in at about 3:35 and thought they would be closed for that hour in between but they let us in and seated us. So at this point I figured they just extended the lunch time. (Stupid mistake) Of course by the time we had to pay, our bill was about $55. (Without the tip) when I asked if we were served the dinner food they said yes. I was still confused. They told us they usually would take their breaks during that hour in between lunch and dinner but they've been skipping it lately so they can go home earlier. Which I understand, but because that was our first time eating there none of that was made clear to us. It also shouldn't be customers problem that they want to skip their break. They really need to change that and not advertise dinner starting at 4:30 or else I'm going to expect dinner to start at 4:30. Either way we paid what we needed to and left. Great place very clean, open, and airy. Came here for my daughter's birthday and we weren't disappointed. Great selection of meats and vegetables, (surprisingly so, we came for lunch. Food is good. The only problem I have is if you check your bill before paying, they add in a gratuity. Ok it's fine if you want to sneak it into your receipt, but then I'm not going to tip because gratuity literally means a tip given to a waiter. I normally tip 20% because I work in customer service and I know it sucks. Since they already charged me for a tip I wasn't going to add one. The staff started pushing for a tip and trying to say there is no gratuity on the receipt, it's just the tax and they push asking for a tip. The meal is suppose to be $20 for lunch, tax is around 10%, then they add a gratuity and the bill ends up being $30. I don't know if they think I'm stupid but I did not appreciate that. I just gave them some cash to get them to leave me alone so I could leave. I have never been anywhere that the staff asks for a tip and pushes for a tip. The first visit we had was amazing. The service was great. The food was okay but for the price, we thought it was worth it (especially because it is so close to home). The second visit was mediocre. The staff were okay. The food was the same. Frozen meats. Bland seafood. Hot dogs for the kids. Subpar gyoza. I find this place pretty humorous as they advertise Korean BBQ but the owners are clearly not Korean. I guess having Korean music and Korean pop singers on your TV makes you legit Korean. The third visit was the third strike. We will drive far to go somewhere else. The service was pretty bad. We had brought our friends here for the first time and had to apologize. If you are seriously desperate for Korean BBQ, I guess you could waste your money here. Otherwise, just drive the extra distance to GEN or something. The waitresses were rude. The owner did not even acknowledge us when the first visit she was super nice and accommodating. We got our table and sat down. We waited. No water right away and the place wasn't that packed. I went and started getting food because the kids were hungry. Our grills weren't turned on. When my husband got tired of waiting and tried to turn it on himself, he was reprimanded. Then, as we were cooking our food, the waitresses came by nonstop to turn down our heat. We know the trick. They are turning down the heat so that our meat cooks faster, we get fuller faster, and we don't eat as much. Sounds freaking hilarious, right? But it's true and it's their game. Don't waste your time and money. Very disappointed. Kimchi is not good and looks like it needs some lovin' The price is too much for everything to be left out buffet style for so long. Sides are not good. I think the best food item was the rice and fried donuts but that's it. Not to mention they add the 15% tip on your check and mark it on your receipt -as if you wrote the 15% yourself. They even circled the 15% suggested tip and you have to sign. I, as a Korean can't ask more than how they do at this place. You might think that meat is as good quality as you pay for, but think about all other options you can choose from. I always had missed my Korean BBQ dinner with some Sojus(Korean wine), and this place is like a heaven to me. So much freedom, you can basically stay as long as you want, and pick whatever you want to eat whether it is meat, seafood or a plate of side dish. I can't believe to hear waitresses were careless, they are always ready to serve us and give us extra help. We usually go with little ones, and kinda make mess on our table, they never complain, instead keep coming back to check on us and help us keep the table tidy and organized. I understand that some of people have a different aspects or standard on restaurant and services. But, if you are the ones wanting to enjoy real Korean BBQ(setting, food wise), I think this is the one!! It was about an hour drive, with traffic. After walking in, the staff greeted me with very kind manners. So the style of this kbbq place was that you grab a plate and pick out which types of meat and vegetables you want to cook. Very similar to Picnic Garden in New Jersey.
