Though there are many choices for fast food here, inlcuing French, Tacos, Pizza, Bakery, Indian and Smoothies, I opted for the J BOX and was pleased with the result. I ordered: Ramen - Our signature ramen soup is made from a mixture of pork broth, a rich and healthy miso paste, and soy sauce. Served with cha-shu pork, bean sprout, egg, crab stick, and green onion. $9.45. And the outside dining venue for this food court is very pleasant, with seating under awnings available and a large fountain in the middle of the court. You've probably heard of the Good, Fast, Cheap Paradigm, where you can only get 2 out of three (Good and Fast, or Fast and Cheap for example). We came for lunch on a Friday afternoon and it was pretty popular in this place. Mostly looked like a business lunch crowd with folks that probably all work in the nearby office buildings. We were headed to Legoland (a few minutes away) and thought we'd stop by for a quick bite. Since it's part of a food court, my family all wanted different cuisines, so we split up and one person got a sandwich at Croutons, two people split Indian food at Punjabi Tandoor, and one person got a Bento box at J-box. The Bul-go-gi was a little bit on the dry side but flavored well. Portion size was good (see photo). There was plenty of rice, and the California Rolls were on par with typical grocery-store level Cali Rolls with imitation Krab meat in them. Avocado and cucumber in it were both fresh and the rice was not dry. The Tempura shrimp was also satisfactory. I thought the salad was a bit bland/plain, even though there was dressing tossed into it. The ingredients were fresh though. Food came out pretty fast. --------TL;DR-------- PROS: location is convenient, service was fast. In the Food Court with plenty of outdoor seating. Portion sizes were good. CONS: prices a bit on the higher end for a lunch ($14.45 for the Bul-go-gi Bento box). Salad could use more dressing. BOTTOM LINE: If you want fairly quick takeout Japanese food, this place has it. Over the years I've come here a handful of times and it's been mediocre, but being open minded when I started working nearby I decided to give them another chance. The first time they placed my order as a Paradise roll at $9.95 instead of a Philly Role at $7.45. Correcting them and them correcting the chef in the back I assumed they would refund my money, nope. Just shrugged it off. Really bro? I normally tip 20%, but you lost that by being incompetent. Philly roll needs to be righter and not square. Next visit. Teriyaki Chicken bento box. Salad is nothing like what it looks like, forget tomatoes, just shredded lettuce and carrot slivers with a creamy sauce with no identity. Shrimp tempura was soggy by the time I got to my office 1 mile away. Same with the egg roll. I like the chicken, but found the sauce to be bland for teriyaki. My California rolls had soy sauce on it already, what? Poke is basic, and not even competitive with the poke craze that hit San Diego 4 years ago. It just seems lazy. The fish is ok and I'm glad they use avo and seaweed salad, but it's not that much more difficult to bring some authenticity to the "fast casual fusion" they seem to be going for. This visit they did not give me an "all salmon" bowl. The menu is too small to not do everything well. The prices aren't amazing the food isn't anything to write home about, the service is bunk because they won't fix their mistakes or when you bring it up to them the next time it's like, that wasn't me or oh well. Ahh! Its SO NICE to know there's a Japanese place around the corner from work :-) There are 7 rolls to choose from.. which all come with a house salad as well.. there are also 3 salads entrees too! They few have a few korean dishes "korean beef" aka bulgogi, and you can get it as is, or as a bowl too. The family that owns this place is really sweet. They even carry a few Japanese drinks too like Calpico and Green/Oolong tea in a can. The salad dressing amazing and the paradise roll was yummy too! It is part of a food court, so is quite small with centralized seating. I would say that more than half of the places in this food court were closed on a Saturday, so my guess is that this spot does most of its business on weekdays. I was craving beef bulgogi so I made the drive to try out J BOX. It's a bit tucked in among some industrial buildings. Parking was easy to find, but I came during lunch time on a weekday so I found myself mixed in with the lunch hour rush (which honestly wasn't that bad). J BOX is located indoors, but all the seating is in an outdoor food court where the majority of tables and chairs are shaded by umbrellas. The weather was beautiful when we went, so it was really comfortable to sit on the wooden lawn chairs, umbrella blocking the sun, and watching and hearing the large water fountain nearby. It was just a very relaxing environment! I would probably not come here during rainy days though since there is no indoor seating. We ordered one J Bowl with chicken and one J Bowl with beef bulgogi. It came with rice (brown rice is 50 cents extra), one veggie egg roll, and a salad. The service and the food was okay. The girl that worked behind the counter offered very minimal pleasantries, just took my order and gave me my receipt. Which is whatever, just glad my order was correct. Rice was fluffy and the salad was a salad, lol. The beef bulgogi is not as good as one that you would get at your average sit-down Korean restaurant, but it is okay. J BOX is a humble cafe located in a food court where you can find various food genres. Came here for lunch and ordered their Poke Bowl ($11.95). It's simple, nothing fancy, but undoubtedly one of the freshest poke fishes I've ever tasted. By default, each bowl comes with a blend of raw tuna and salmon poke. For an extra touch of yum, you can request for additional sauces (extra $0.50 charge), and my personal recommendation would be their spicy aioli sauce - It was a good combination that got me hooked right on the spot! If you don't have the time to wait, you are able to call your order in. Here are some of the dishes I've found take the most time: - Poke Bowl - Chicken Katsu Curry - Ramen On my last visit, I had the Poke Bowl ($12). A little pricey but it's expected with poke. However, you do get a generous amount of fish (salmon & tuna) along with seaweed salad, rice, house salad and avocado. Fish tasted fresh and was marinated well. Rice was cooked well. House salad is plain. Nothing really special there so I usually ask to leave it out. Service is always friendly. They usually have 2-3 people working the front so they get through the crowd fairly quickly. Even the owners take the time to give a smile and say hi to their regulars. If you're in the area, it's worth a try for lunch. I'll be back when I fail to meal prep for work which is pretty often. :) read more

My friend and I met up at J Box for lunch earlier today. This was the first visit for the both of us. J Box is a small and very, very clean and tidy Japanese American fast food restaurant. I would've given it a higher score but when I got my drink (iced tea) there were 2 baby flies that came out of the tea dispenser! I'd probably give this place 3.5 stars. I've had this bookmarked to try out, but never really got around to it because of the distance. I was already in the area and decided to stop by because the coffee shop I was looking for had closed early. They are located in a food court/strip mall type area, with a large pond/fountain just off of Faraday Ave. There is no seating at any of the shops, except for maybe a bench to sit on while you wait for your food. I ordered the Bulgogi bento box, and boy was it expensive! The bento box came with several items: 2 shrimp tempura (nice, crispy, not fishy tasting, but the dip tasted like it should have been with gyoza instead of tempura), a vegetable eggroll, salad (the vegetables tasted fresh, but there was little dressing on it), your choice of either a 4 piece california roll or spicy tuna (spicy tuna roll was good, but seemed hastily made and some didn't hold together very well), and the beef bulgogi. The bulgogi is similar to the beef in a Japanese beef bowl, but with Korean flavors. It tasted pretty good, but was a bit on the dry side. I've had it several times in South Korea, and it was usually served pretty wet with sauce. The customer service was all business, a welcome from the cashier and that was it. No small talk, no smiling faces, just a give me your money/here's your food, now leave kind of vibe. You're on your own for utensils, they don't put anything but the food in the bag. They are near the soda machine, chopsticks, forks, low sodium soy sauce, etc. There is little containers of hot sauce near the register, I think it was sriracha, but would have preferred the Korean gochujang to go with the bulgogi. Overall the food was pretty good, but very overpriced for what I ordered. I'd probably try one of the daily specials on a second visit, but that too seemed expensive. read more

I got sent down to Carlsbad for work and spent an hour Yelping to try to find something yummy, quick, and semi-healthy. J Box was the only place within a 5 mile radius of the client's office that fit the description. The first day, I ordered the seared albacore salad and added a side of bulgogi. Everything was fresh and tasty and I thought the little onigiri that came with it was adorable. The albacore wasn't amazing, but it was at least average quality. I got 5 big pieces with a garlic ponzu sauce that I really enjoyed. The sauce was great both as a dipping sauce for the fish and as a salad dressing. The romaine was not at all wilted and the seaweed salad was really good as well, not overly salty like they can sometimes be. The cute little onigiri was made with seasoned sushi rice that could have done with a little more seasoning, but I enjoyed it anyways. I liked the bulgogi enough to order the bulgogi J bowl the second day. It wasn't the best bulgogi I've ever had, but it had a nice mix of sweet and salty and the sprinkle of toasted sesame seeds was a nice touch. I absolutely love that J Box offers brown rice. The bowl came with their house salad and a vegetable egg roll. The egg roll was the least yummy part of the bowl. The filling wasn't too bad, but the wrapper was too thick and not very crispy. I liked the sweet dressing on the salad luckily because there was a lot more salad than I thought there would be. I'm not complaining though because I was extremely full when I finished the bowl.
