Nice place and people but principal ingredient is salt. Two of four meals largely inedible.

I don't know if the Kitchen Table was the best meal I had during my stay in Omaha (that would probably be 801 Chophouse) but it was definitely the most inventive and memorable. Additionally, it was the meal that I would most want to eat again. I arrived at the Kitchen Table around 6:15 or so. There was a line, but it went quickly. After I sat down, the line eventually got to the door, so my timing was good. You order at the counter and then your order is brought out to your table. Everything flows very smoothly, even when the place is crowded. The Kitchen Table has its standard menu, along with specials every night of the week. I went on a Tuesday, so the special was a burger. I asked the owner which she would recommend, the burger or the meatloaf sandwich. She said since I am only in Omaha for a couple of days, she would recommend the meatloaf sandwich. In addition, I got the everything bagel cheese spread to start and blistered shishito peppers on the side. The Kitchen Table makes its own cream soda, so I got one of those as well. My water and cream soda arrived first. This cream soda is fantastic. Very smooth, flavorful, but not overly sweet. One of the best soft drinks I've had, and probably the best cream soda period. Well worth $3 for a housemade drink of this caliber. The everything bagel cheese balls arrived next, only about 5 minutes after I ordered them. This is the most aptly named dish in the history of dining, it's like an everything bagel and a cheese ball had a baby. All of the classic everything bagel flavors are present and accounted for: garlic, poppy seeds, onion, sesame, and chives. All the flavors work very well with the cheese, nothing is overpowering, but you taste all of it. It's served with some fantastic grilled bread. This appetizer is inventive, but simple in the execution. It was fantastic, if you made me a sandwich of this stuff for my meal I would be very content. The meatloaf sandwich arrived after another 7 or 8 minutes or so. Like I said, everything flows very quickly at the Kitchen Table. This is a legit sandwich, the slab of meatloaf is thick, the steak sauce is tangy and the pickled veggies are crisp. There is cheddar cheese and some solid toasted bread as well. It's a well constructed sandwich and I am appreciative the owner recommended it over the burger. I can see why she was proud of the sandwich. Every sandwich is served with a side of popcorn, which is seasoned with some tasty stuff. The shishito peppers were lightly blistered and served with sea salt and salsa seca. They were tender and no spicy in the least. Prepared very well, I was glad they were in season. The Kitchen Table is the kind of innovative, but comfortable, place that every city needs. I wish we had a comparable spot in the Oklahoma City area. If nothing else, I just want a place that sells everything bagel cheese balls. If I ever return to downtown Omaha, my first meal will absolutely be at the Kitchen Table. read more

I brought my sister to Kitchen Table for brunch while she was visiting to check out Omaha before she moves. Kitchen Table impressed both of us and is definitely on my personal "Best of Omaha" list. We both ordered the brunch sampler (very filling and reasonable at $15). We both got the maple bacon donut and the grits with the poached egg. She got a bloody mary. Everything was very, very good. The grits were savory and filling, and I can't wait to have them again. The atmosphere was quiet and peaceful. There were both families and a few young couples there. The staff was also very friendly and all of their recommendations were spot on. I am not a vegetarian or vegan, but I believe the menu had quite a few vegetarian and vegan friendly items. Kitchen table wasn't open for dine-in, but their patio was open when I went for brunch. I'd recommend going on a warm day, as the patio itself doesn't get any sunlight in the morning (I'd hazard a guess that it's north-ish-facing) They rotate through weekly take-home kits as well as a seasonal menu, as I understand it. I had the aksarben, and my date had the breakfast biscuit sandwich. Bear in mind I'm a recent Omaha transplant, but I've never had a runza before. I get that it's a local favorite, and practically blasphemy to speak ill of runza. I can't help but think of a hot pocket when someone describes it to me though. And I ate waaaay more than my fair share of hot pockets in college. So runza isn't on my list of places to try. Why the comparison to runza? Well, the aksarben is basically a lot like what I thought a runza would be! It's a self-contained sandwich with a ground beef mixture. It was tasty enough, but I just felt... wrong eating it instead of the runza I have no intention of trying anytime soon. So if you're in for a spin on the runza, I'd recommend giving the aksarben a try. This, of course, coming from an out of towner. So take this recommendation with a sizeable grain of salt. read more

Absolutely loved this farm to table, fresh organic, & local spot!! What a trendy treat to stop in for lunch after we landed on the airplane. Loved they served all meals with delicious popcorn and all the food was high quality and fresh!! Mom got a blt with THICK bacon and shared a mug of tomato soup! Went for brunch on a Saturday. I had heard that brunch could get crowed, but it was good right after it opened. I could see how it would get crowded closer to regular brunch hours. The Bloody Mary was delicious and a little spicy- I loved the paper straw! The sweet potato toast was also wonderful, however I was disappointed that I only received one slice for $6. If I was hungry it would have taken more to fill me up, and I was told that they thought it would come with 2 slices for the price. My boyfriend got the Deebo and said that it was really good. I've been admiring this place from afar. I even met the owners Colin and Jessica at an Omaha Public Library culinary event in 2013, and it STILL took me a year to walk across the street from work for lunch. If anything, it was well worth the wait. I ordered the Cauliflower Jam sandwich ($7). Since it was bustling during lunch hour, it took a while for said sandwich to make it from order to my table; but expect this, as everything is made to order. The sandwich did not disappoint. The layers of flavors were mouth-tingling, and KT did not skimp on ingredients including cauliflower, pesto and mozzarella cheese. Sandwich was served with a complimentary helping of popcorn and pickled cauliflower (which was the topic of their library presentation, pickled condiments). There are only a handful of places like this in Omaha. Prices are reasonable, and I love supporting local vendors via small business. Self-serve water is a plus. Co-owner Jessica made the rounds several times, ensuring everybody was happy; I was happy. In fact, all staff I encountered were friendly. No TV: a big plus. Update required!** While I'm still on the fence for the weekly lunch menu, I have been thoroughly enjoying weekend Sunday brunch here. The 1-2-3 brunch is really outstanding in my opinion. It changes up weekly based on local ingredients and what's in season, but basically for $15 you get to choose 3 items and have a "three course" meal. #1 is the grilled bread with vanilla creme butter and homemade jam/preserve. I've had it with blackberry and raspberry-both excellent! It's amazing how simple "toast with butter and jam" can be done in such a gourmet fashion. I love the grilled bread! #2 is usually either a yogurt option, cereal, or pastry, and #3 is the Mac daddy breakfast option, the main course. I've enjoyed some really unique #3 items, including a breakfast casserole, grits with radish and pork belly, and a Piedmontese Strata. Fantastic use of local and in-season ingredients and definitely something more exotic than your local diner is going to serve. I was in here for brunch (again) last Sunday. I have to say Kitchen Table continues to excel as one of Omaha's most original and delicious eateries. This time around I had the smoked turkey cheese strata with pumpkin bread and smoked trout, plus chips and dip. And, well, everything came out super fast and tasted great. Oddly enough the highlight of the meal was the pumpkin bread/trout combo. You'd never think fish and pumpkin would mesh together, but it's a surprising pairing of flavors that had my palate piqued with intrigue. Ohmigoodness. We stumbled into Kitchen Table after a long day of travel, looking for 'lunch' at 4pm. It was happy hour and appetizers were half-price, so my husband ordered cheddar-parmesn gougeres, deviled eggs, and sunflower hummus. All were delicious and beautifully presented. I mean, the hummus came out like a floral arrangement. Gorgeous. And as tasty as it was pretty. My husband also had a midwestern wheat beer recommended by the staff, and it was top-notch. Along with my very good coldbrew coffee, I ordered the fried egg sandwich special, made with havarti and a garlic scape pesto on unfathomably good, dense, chewy handmade bread. Seriously: It must have been one of the best things I've eaten in the last six months. We took a kale salad back to our hotel. It was just as good as everything else, with a lemony dressing, blackjack cheese, and dukkah seasoning. Delightful. I'd eat it daily if I didn't live 1,125 miles away. On my way through the restaurant to leave, I noticed the chef had plated a burger with snow peas sautéed with hazelnuts. Who does snow peas with hazelnuts? I left thinking, I've gotta cook more creatively at home. It's testament to its excellence that a restaurant is inspiring me to engage my own kitchen with more vigor. I have to add, the service at KT was awesome: These people are amazing, friendly, efficient, quick, and sweet. We asked for recommendations in the area and got a couple for dinner (KT closes early and we knew we wouldn't be hungry again until at least 9pm). What a wonderful surprise in a new city: A restaurant where the staff looks interested, where you get the sense they're cooking because they want to do something extra cool for you, where dishes come out far more beautiful than required, and where the food and atmosphere coordinate to a level of awesome. This is a great spot! Fresh and delicious food. We stopped for lunch and had the daily special chicken pesto sandwich, the grilled cheese and tomato soup, and a special plate made to request. WOW. I was only in Omaha for the day and the reviews drew me in, and certainly did not disappoint. The Sunday brunch special was great, 3 courses for less than $20 including tip. I started with the Cinnamon Sugar Dirt Bomb (which is not pictured because I ate it too quickly), an amazing doughnut/muffin hybrid. The grits didn't wow me, although the bacon and blue cheese really worked well with the grits. The star of the show for me was the empanada. After seeing this restaurant listed in a 15 places that will blow your mind kind of article, I decided to try it for Brunch last Sunday. I got there at opening and was the first customer. I ordered the 1-2-3 and asked about hot tea. They had several options but none was a plain black, so I got coffee instead and took a table near the window. It took twenty minutes to get the first component of my brunch, a simple piece of toast with jam and flavored butter. The bread was good and so were the toppings, but because the bread was cooked on a grill it had a char in places that gave a burned taste that I found unpleasant. Ten minutes later, my rhubarb scone came. This was the best part of my breakfast. Flaky and flavorful. The vanilla butter was not my thing though. My third component, the day's strata with pork, black beans, and havarti cheese came soon after. It looked good. But the salt sprinkled on top made some bits taste overly salty and the side of the strata that was next to the cooking vessel when it was baked was overly dry and tough. Everything LOOKED fabulous, but looks can be deceiving. All in all, I walked out disappointed. The people were friendly enough, but there isn't a whole lot of service other than bringing your food to you. Kitchen Table has quickly become my favorite place to eat in Omaha. Whether its lunch, dinner, or something in between, Kitchen Table never disappoints. The food (and restaurant itself) is creative, artistic, innovative, fresh, often local, and yet never lofty or pretentious. Whether you're a lover of local meat or an avid vegetarian/vegan, Kitchen Table knows how to make your mouth water. If you go to KT during lunch time, check out their sandwich menu, and definitely zone in on whatever their sandwich/soup of the day is. The daily specials are definitely what makes this place special. If the daily special doesn't tickle your pickle, I would point meat-eaters towards the Whole Bird sandwich (an obvious crowd favorite) and veg-heads towards the open-faced PB&J (nostalgic, but refined and sexy in a way). HOWEVER, you really haven't experienced Kitchen Table until you've frequented their evening meal-of-the-day experience. Personally, I have become a Thursday "Taco Night" addict for their insanely satisfying and tongue-tingling vegetarian tacos. I have also gone to KT on a Risotto night and Pasta night and both met my high aesthetic eating standards. The fact that every day of the week KT has a new dish to serve keeps me coming back on a weekly basis and checking their website on a near daily basis. If you are feeling extra fancy, I also recommend trying one of their sodas, which are made in house. I've had their Vanilla Cream soda and Ginger Ale, and both are joyously delicious and are served in hip mason jar glasses. **An extra note: there are not many restaurants you'll go to where you are likely to see the owners working and greeting you there themselves. The people who run this place are not only creative geniuses, but also cool, nice, down-to-earth people. Kitchen Table truly highlights the genuineness and hard-work that characterizes the people you find in the midwest, while also bringing about an avant-garde edge and hip appeal that you wouldn't expect to find so far in from the coast. Not many other restaurants in Omaha will get you the quality of experience and food for such a modest price as Kitchen Table. Its the sort of place that would top reviews in a city like Brooklyn, and yet we are lucky enough to have it here. read more

An interesting place with great food.. On the small side. Came here after a work meeting for a quick lunch before heading out of town. I would guess the menu is consistently evolving as its on a chalk board. The food all seemed fresh and well made. I have the breakfast platter.. bacon, toast and eggs. Bacon was thick and cooked a little crispy, just how I like it. We had a couple hummus plates, cookies, biscuits and a little of everything. I know the reviews are raving, but I just can't say the same thing about my visit. I felt the food lacked in tasting, and like the rest of my family -- I can't get on the popcorn trend. They serve you popcorn with your meal instead of chips. It wasn't even good popcorn. I like flavored popcorn, but it just didn't hit a high note with me. As far the sandwiches, and varied food options. I do appreciate that they offer vegan. My cousin is vegan, and she enjoyed her vegan sandwich. As far as myself -- I ordered their meat loaf sandwich and was less than enthused. I guess the mix of ingredients they were going for were a little too far out of my comfort zone. They added some sort of spices that didn't mesh well with the concept. My aunt did enjoy their take on a PB & J. Here they make their own peanut butter by blending 3 different types of nuts together than just your typical peanut. I don't know if it was worth the price paid.... but hey... it wasn't my sandwich. I like the ambiance here. I like the exposed brick and pipe work. I'm into that sort of thing. Doubtful I'd want to return though. Holy moly, the peanut butter and jelly sandwich. It's an open face and it's out of this world. Tonight was my first dinner experience at Kitchen Table (my fiancé and I've eaten brunch many times). Love the rotating specials and everything is so fresh. We tried the butternut squash lasagna tonight and it didn't disappoint. The menu is so simple and yet, everything is SO YUMMY. Even a simple side salad is damn good. Now about that PB and J: It's house-made nut butter with fresh preserves served on the best grilled bread. And you get popcorn on the side. My wife and I decided to try lunch at the Kitchen Table since we had heard and seen several good reviews. The restaurant sits beside Jimmy Johns on Farnam in the same complex as the Tap Room. Upon entering, we were immediately greeted and asked if this was our first time dining with them. When we said "yes", the greeter led us over to the menu (written on a large chalk board) and then went on to describe the day's specials. Your order is taken at the cash register and they take your name. When your meal is ready, one of the cooks, comes out, calls your name and delivers the food. You pick up your drink at the register and the silverware and napkins, then find a table. The restaurant is rather narrow. There are 14 small tables with chairs and bench seating as you walk in. Walls are hung with reclaimed wood from an old barn (benches are made of the same wood). We liked the look. The kitchen is open and you can see the food being prepared. There are 4-5 stools at a counter looking into the kitchen if you'd like to watch. Our Lunch consisted of: Fried Farm Egg, Gouda, Big Muddy Mustard Greens, and Balsamic Ketchup on Toasted Levain - This was today's special. The sandwich was quite good, but the portion was somewhat small. $7.00 for the sandwich. White Bean, Butternut Squash, & Kale Soup with small green salad - Soup was good, but seemed a little flat. It also can be served with pork, which may have been the missing ingredient. Deviled Eggs - Tasty. Three deviled eggs for $3.00. Two (2) Earl Gray green teas - the drinks come in small mason jars. The tea is 3 dollars a jar...quite expensive for what you get. So, the lunch was good, but not outstanding. Plus, we dropped almost 30 dollars for the items described above. A bit more than what we usually like to pay for a lunch. Worth trying, but not something that I would go out of my way to have. I'll go ahead and say it. "Hi, I'm Mike and I am hooked on Kitchen Table" the first step is admitting you have a problem. I however am in denial because I don't see it as a problem. More than twice in one week and back to back visits this time. I am happy that there are a few more items that I need to try. The Veggie Dog Sliders were pretty good and I will order them again. The Chicago Style Grilled Cheese was a little spicy and zesty. Definite to get again. The Sweet Potato Jam. The best yet! The bread is always a little chewy, but I like it. The Deviled Eggs. Slightly off target. A bit salty or too much smoked paprika. It tasted more like celery salt, but the presentation was good and overall not that big of a deal. The Potato soup was really tasty and I w ill continue to ask what the soup of the day is because this one was on par with Modern Love. I have no idea why I waited so long to give KT a chance, but since it seems new to me I will be here a lot more. Wow! Haven't had such a good experience ordering out in a while. I placed an order from skipthedishes (I mean we all know how these companies work, sometimes not so proficient) Jessica called right away and made me aware they were out of deviled eggs for the day, and made it easier for me to navigate with Skip in order to cancel the order right away. She called not long after and informed me her husband was whipping out a batch now, a welcome surprise! It was so fast that skip hadn't even responded to me yet, so it worked out perfectly. She even kept in contact to update me when my delivery would arrive(skip didn't!) Jessica has lovely customer service skills and made this hectic Friday afternoon better! Thanks guys, perhaps having your own efficient delivery from your shop would be the next move, I'd look no further than Kitchen The food was exemplary as well. Interesting and unique - these are two words that describe the Kitchen Table. This is not your average Omaha Old Market restaurant. This is either sit-down eating or carry out. You can hit the website at www.kitchentable.com, order in advance, and pick up. There is no table service, you order at the counter. The menu shifts daily, and tonight was no exception. I ordered the Paidina (flat bread) with pulled pork, that quite honestly wasn't like any pulled pork I had ever had, along with an order of their Pimento Cheese, which came with toast points. Round it out with a glass of wine on tap from their limited bar, and it was a pretty pleasant dinner, all things considered. This is picking up a bit, but could use some local folks coming in to try it out. The interior is well-decorated - lighting is from above, and the seating is reasonably comfortable. Kitchen Table tasty has healthy food and tasty fatty food in the same place for a good price. Their happy hour is the best time to go to try the snacks at 1/2 price. They have brunch on the weekends and they have this weird dish I really like: yogurt with beets, mint & granola. Now, I eat a lot of unusual things and I would never think to put these things together, BUT they are oddly good together. It is a hearty breakfast and is actually good for you & I appreciate that. Oh how I wish we had a place like this back where I live! We stopped here for Sunday brunch on a short weekend trip to Omaha and we were pleasantly surprised by the complete dedication to the farm-to-table concept that this place had. They bake their own bread even source the flour locally also no OJ here for breakfast, because oranges don't grow close enough to Omaha for their standards. I ordered the Fried Egg Sandwich which came with cheddar and a salsa on a rosemary levain. Simple sandwich but the execution was stellar and the salsa was fantastic. My wife had the grits that were not too cheesy like most. It was served with potatoes, ham and ricotta.
