We had a very underwhelming experience here. The kale caesar salad was actively bad. Like if I wanted to be mean, I could prank someone into eating it. The croutons tasted like cardboard, the dressing was strange, and then all you had was kale. As my girlfriend said, ducks would reject those croutons... The warm bowl was pretty meh as well and also not warm. Overall would not come back and would try literally any other restaurant in town. Used to love Ella's Bellas and I was disappointed to see it gone on a recent visit. This place took over and I popped in hoping maybe it was the same place and just the name changed. Not even close. The inside decor is nice as is the cute area outside with picnic tables. Since it was my first time in, I needed a few minutes to get my bearings and ask a few questions. The girl behind the counter was clearly bothered by my questions and didn't seem to want to spend the time- she was very cold. I eat healthy, but I'm not a vegan and it seems they are a mostly vegan cafe. when I asked if they had any croissants the girl looked at me as if I ran over her dog. They had loaves of bread on the counter advertised as sourdough but they looked a bit 'different' when I asked about them she said they weren't really sourdough they were vegan, no gluten and a few other things that made me realize they weren't actually sourdough. I was a bit turned off by her attitude and the whole vibe, so I grabbed a vegan biscuit to go - which was yummy. There are so many places in Beacon now, I'll just visit somewhere with friendlier service next time. read more

Just because all the food is gluten free and vegetarian, doesn't mean that non-vegetarians and people who eat gluten can't love this place. But for people whose allergies have led them to a GF diet, and to people who are vegetarian, this place is dreamy. The bowls, the sandwiches, the cookies, the little cakes, all edible, all delicious. Particularly loved the tempeh reuben and the peanut butter cookies. Appreciated how friendly the staff was about ingredients questions. This place made my first visit to Beacon, for a wedding and some sightseeing, incredibly welcoming and comfortable. So glad to know it'll be here when I visit again. read more

Ordered ahead online and showed up 5 min after my food was scheduled to be ready. Not only was my food not ready, but the order had not been submitted. I was told it would be a 15 min wait if I didn't want anything heated up. Five minutes later I was told that they no longer had an item that I ordered. No apologies. Very poor customer service. Immediately when you walk in to kitchen and coffee you're in awe by their bright open and airy atmosphere. The girl who greeted me name was Nikki I believe and she was extremely friendly and personable and helped me make my decision on what coffee would be best for me since I don't really drink coffee too often. She helped me decide on getting the double espresso and I honestly was floored with how great it was , and I've been to many coffee shops in Europe and different cities in the U.S. , had my drink with their avocado toast which was absolutely delicious and made super fresh. Delicious and interesting vegetarian fare that appeals to a variety of palates. Everything from the potato leek soup to the peppermint hot chocolate was delicious. It's difficult to find vegetarian food in the Hudson Valley and even more difficult to find vegetarian food that doesn't consist of only a bean burger option. From vegetarian sandwiches to bowls and soups, this place had something for each of us. I'd love to see this establishment open up another space in the Kingston/Rhinebeck area. read more

I really enjoyed my experience here. I went one day after a hike and got myself a smoothie. I don't remember exactly what was in it, but I know there was pineapple and turmeric. It was such a surprising blend of flavors, that I went back the next day to see if they had it again. They didn't, but I still picked up a few things. Instead, I got some of their oat bars and avocado toast. The oat bars, as simple as they seem, are so good. I am a huge fan of the apricot ones. The outdoor dining space is actually so cute, but just watch your head (I'm a bit tall and certain areas were like playing limbo with the trees). I noticed that another reviewer brought up the take out/dine in container situation. The second day I was there, when I ordered quite a few things, they specifically asked what was to stay or for take out. I actually really appreciated that. I'm hoping that my experience is more of the norm, and perhaps a mistake was made previously. read more

Have been coming here for a while, until one of the workers who had just walked through the door told me I couldn't eat a bagel I had brought in to eat and drink the coffee I had just bought because it's a gluten free place. I adore this place. The food is absolutely delicious, there are plenty of vegan and vegetarian options, and everything is 100% GLUTEN FREE. You just don't find gluten free baked goods like this: baguettes, sourdough loaves, layer cakes, whoopie pies, just so many great options. Coffee and tea selection is A+. I have celiac and love that I can eat everything here, but I frequently bring friends who can eat gluten and I've never heard anything but raves. read more

I really wanted to be excited about a new coffee shop on my end of main street but my three visits have been a disappointment. Putting aside the awkward layout (things are often backed up when you walk in the front door without anyone knowing where to stand and how to socially distance) the service and the product both disappointed me each time. The coffee is a little more expensive and not as good as Big Mouth Coffee (whose beans they use anyway), which is only about a 2 minute further walk West, and the pastries I've gotten have been dry. Plus the woman who has served me 2 of the 3 times has done so with some attitude -- I basically got shamed for asking for one of the straws that they hide behind the counter, "it's a sip cup you know..." (I do, but it's easier to us a straw when driving). Also, not to nitpick, but I'd like to mention that the mask the woman routinely wears (one of the ones with the little round vents on each side) has actually been shown to make things worse by concentrating and expelling your breath like an exhaust pipe. You'd think someone on the staff of a food service place might mention that to her -- I would but her attitude doesn't suggest to me that she'd be terribly receptive. On the plus side, the layout of the tables and the back area is very nice, and I could certainly see it as an excellent place to hang out for a bit and get some work done. There are some smoothies on the menu that I'd also like to try if I can brace myself to go back. Just go to Big Mouth, or Bank Sq. at the other end of main street. read more

Once upon a time, this place was Ella's Bellas, an exceptional bakery that -- despite being gluten free, and despite my love of all things glutinous -- was my favorite bakery in the Hudson Valley. It recently changed hands and became Kitchen & Coffee. I held my breath nervously, and was *thrilled* to discover that the baked goods were just as wonderful as they'd been before. Some of them are even better -- I could eat their almond bundt cakes for every meal. Unfortunately, some of the changes haven't been as positive. They did a full renovation of the interior, and it went from "charming Hudson Valley patisserie" to "generic hipster cafe with interior design that could live anyplace, as long as that place gets Dwell Magazine." Like many things on Main Street, it now feels like a New Yorker's idea of what a Hudson Valley hotspot feels like, rather than having any Hudson Valley personality at all. Pros: - Great bread, great baked goods - Nice ambience, albeit generic - Convenient and close to everything - The back patio is fantastic, and great for sitting and hanging out (even in COVID times) Cons: - They say they open at 7, but most of their baked goods aren't available until several hours later. They should clarify that they serve *coffee* at 7, but don't fully open until 8:30 or 9. - Some of the staff has a definite attitude. I go often, and the experience is wildly different based on who's at the counter. - The quality of their espresso drinks varies sharply based on who's making it. Sometimes I get an excellent latte or cappuccino; other times, it's so weak that I have to remove the lid to confirm that there's any coffee in it at all. There are lots of coffee shops on Main Street, several of which I'd recommend before recommending the coffee here. - You know how Baby Boomers sometimes say that Millennials/Gen Z squander all their money on avocado toast? This is the place where the avocado toast is expensive enough to make that baseless claim feel plausible. - The name "Kitchen & Coffee" is about as differentiated as if they'd named the place "Restaurant." I want to love Kitchen & Coffee. Beacon deserves an incredible gluten free bakery, and the quality of the baked goods here fit the bill. If they got their logistics in order and dropped the attitude, it would be perfect -- until then, I can only recommend it with reservations. read more

I want to love Kitchen & Coffee. My family was a huge fan of Ella's Bellas and we were hopeful Kitchen & Coffee would be just as great! In theory, it's an excellent coffee and lunch spot, but it needs some work. We often find ourselves frustrated that menu items aren't available and we are confused about why they open at 7 if most of the food is not available until 9. That's fine, but maybe specify that it's coffee only until a certain time? When the food is available, it's a great menu, especially if you follow a gluten-free diet like us. We continue to give them pretty regular business, but do wish that there was more consistency in quality of service and availability of menu items. read more

Stopped by Kitchen&Coffee for lunch and it was fantastic. As someone with celiac it was so exciting to not only know that I would be safe dining here, but also to have so many options to choose from! First off, their gluten free baguettes are the best I've ever had - just the right chewy texture and that distinct 'bready' flavor that I often miss with gluten free bread. The scones were lacking a little in texture (too dry and crumbly) but tasted great nonetheless. For my main I got the Black & Green bowl and it was delicious. Such a refreshing and unique combo of ingredients and the beet hummus was a perfect addition. My partner got the Reuben sandwich and said it was great/far better than he was expecting for being plant-based. Coffee was pretty good according to others in our group; their selection of teas should also not be missed! (I recommend the Kyoto green tea blend, very fragrant.) Overall, had an excellent experience and loved the bright, cozy vibe of the place - it was raining when we visited but I'm sure on a sunny afternoon the back patio would be lovely.
