I've been here a handful of times and by far today was the busiest I've ever seen it. Congratulations Kitava! We ordered off the brunch menu and got the gluten free pancakes. It was a bit like mochi texture and we ordered the chocolate sauce on the side. Highly recommend putting the sauce on the side as it's very very rich. It was pretty tasty. I made my own bowl- barbacoa, tahini sauce, broccoli, wild rice and sweet potatoes. The ingredients are healthy so pretty basic. The only thing is only because they didn't want to replace the chicken with beef, I had to pay a few dollars more. If you asked me about my favorite lunch spot, I'd recommend Kitava. The space is inviting, the staff has always been welcoming, and the food is delicious. I've worked my way through their menu and my favorite item is their power bowl with a side of chicken nuggets or cauliflower bites. Kitava is a fun and bright restaurant that offers healthy food options that are packed with flavor. I came here with my work team to have a holiday celebration meal. Our team has a few allergy restrictions and this place checked off all of the boxes. The overall vibe is positive and the ambiance is inviting due to the light color notes along with the high ceiling. We ordered some shareable plates that were delicious and filling. The Brussels sprouts dish has a great char on it with a good dipping sauce. We all ordered bowls and kombucha as our main meals. The table ordered poke bowls while I got the sweet plantain bowl with barbacoa beef. My bowl was really good with kale, white rice, plantain and a yummy orange sauce. The beef was stewed just right and really soaked into the rice to marry with all the flavors. The blood orange kombucha was good, subtle flavor but refreshing. Everyone loved their meal and we had a great time catching up outside of work. The service was quick and excellent in general. I appreciated the changing station in the bathroom. Stop by Kitava for a delicious and healthy meal if you're near the MacArthur BART area of Oakland. From a carnivore with picky taste, this place is top notch! I recently went here for a weeknight dinner with a couple of friends and built my own bowl with rice, paprika chicken, chickpeas, broccoli, and ponzu sauce. I liked Kitava. I went for a work lunch and enjoyed the healthy menu options. This place does healthy bowls and salads. The space is bright, airy and modern. The menu is gluten and dairy free, as well as free of many other additives. In the end, I debated between 3 and 4 stars. It's pricey, but everything is pricey these days - and this spot is healthy. Portions are health minded (read not large) and ingredients are stated to be fresh. I went with a poke bowl and my lunch partner went with the sesame chicken bowl. They were well prepared and good, albeit a bit bland. Not a ton of flavor, but I guess that's what happens when your food isn't covered in salt and sugar. Prices are high, portions will leave you without any leftovers, but everything is relative. They serve kombucha, beer, wine and iced tea/lemonade. Overall, for those with ingredient allergies or being mindful of health, this is an incredible option. I do think there is room for improvement on ways to add more flavor to the bowls to make things a bit more interesting, but still a solid lunch. read more

Came here for dinner last night with my partner. We usually get delivery, but my girlfriend and I decided to dine in last night. Big difference in freshness, I must say! They had some new stuff on the menu, like this seasonal rice noodle bowl. Interesting, but a little too tart for my taste. I prefer my noodles savory. You might like it, though! The chicken nuggets? Crispy as usual, but a tad too large and chewy. The homemade ketchup was on point, though. I wish I could bottle that stuff up! But let me tell you about the soft serve. Imagine the best ice cream alternative you've ever had, topped with olive oil and sea salt. Tasted a bit like light coffee. Absolute perfection! I'd eat it every day if I could. I have been waiting for a place like this to open near me. It's on a quiet location off Broadway, where the search parking is not going to stress you out. There are so many healthy food choices and they taste great. There are choices for kombucha and other beverages on tap; they have cucumber and fruit water. You know it's good when three tables of customers spontaneously start telling each other we all want to order way more food than we know we need and laughing. I brought a colleague who lives nearby, and she kept exclaiming, "How did you find this place?! How did I not know about it?!" Nobody else please come. Arriving at Kitava is easy, located at the corner of 40TH st & OPAL ST. The 2 times I've been here I was able to park on OPAL ST Once inside , ambiance is Airy & Bright from the natural lighting . Been wanting to try this spot for the healthy meal options and it didn't disappoint! My mother-in-law law is sensitive to sugar and gluten and we loved that they have a binder they can check for any questions on ingredients, and each of the dishes use simple ingredients to begin with. I ordered at the register but you could sit down and order via QR code. The dishes are mostly vegetarian or vegan so you will need to add protein if desired. We added the herb chicken or the power bowl ($18), which was delicious! Only wish the portion of meat was a little more. The sesame chicken bowl ($14) overall was not bad but the ingredients were just not prepared as listed - the chicken wasn't crispy breading, the broccoli was lightly steamed/barely cooked versus charred, and the rice was wet so it stuck together. My MIL built her own bowl and loved it. They have a cucumber lemon water station available. Def want to try the kombucha on tap next time. We were overall satiated and felt good (healthy haha) after the meal, though felt like the portion could be a tiny bit more considering the price. Could eat this for lunch every day. Everything about Kitava is lovely - delicious nourishing food, caring employees, and relaxing comfortable atmosphere! We enjoyed every item ordered (see pic description). I was indecisive about the many flavors of kombucha so a staff person gave us tastings (in THE cutest sampling glasses!) and did not make me feel rushed. ***3.5 Stars*** How about some healthy food options in Oakland?! Of course, we love to see it! Although I'm totally diggin' the healthy and locally sourced concept, I was a bit underwhelmed by the food that I had here. My friends and I tried Kitava when they had their long-time pop-up in Buck Wild Brewing. They've since moved to their own brick and mortar in the Temescal district which is a great step-up for them. I ordered the Cuban bowl which came with jasmine rice, beans, avocado, kale slaw, and a cilantro-mojo sauce. The bowl didn't come with meat, so I added pulled pork for an additional $5. The bowl itself was very fresh and hearty. All of the ingredients were freshly prepared and beautifully presented. I especially enjoyed the sweet plantains and the citrusy kale slaw. The cilantro-mojo sauce was light and went well with the other elements of the bowl. Where it fell short for me was with the meat. They forgot to add the pulled pork to my bowl initially, but once I let them know, they came back with a side of it for me. The pork was extremely dry and had absolutely no seasoning on it whatsoever. I get that it's just supposed to be added to the bowl, but a little salt and pepper would have been nice. This would be especially helpful since nothing else really had any kind of seasoning on it either. Also for $5, the portion of meat was pretty small. Not sure if this was due to the fact that it was brought out afterward, but I expected it to be a bit heftier. Aside from those minor issues, I did enjoy my bowl. I will definitely be visiting them at their new location and trying out a different bowl. Hopefully the meat won't be so dry and small during my next visit. read more

They're a restaurant specifically for people who are doing paleo, whole30, keto, etc. They have two locations. One in SF and another in Oakland. Today we went to the Oakland location. Parking is a little tricky because theres a lot of residential homes nearby. We ended parking around the corner but we didn't have to walk to far. When we got there we were impressed by the interior. It was very artsy but still very modern. We also liked the the place takes in a lot of natural light. It goes well with the vibe of the place being about more natural ingredients. When we got there we were greeted by a friendly girl who let us know we could sit anywhere. She let us know we could use the QR code to order but they also have paper menus. I ordered the Ahi Tuna Poke Bowl and my g/f ordered the Butternut Squash Curry. We also ordered some Chicken Nuggets. I loved how crispy they were. I found myself dipping them in the curry sauce. My poke bowl was delicious too. That actually was my first time having a poke bowl and I definitely want to try them more now. I felt really refreshing but still very flavorful. The tuna itself was like crack. That ginger ponzu sauce really had me coming back for more and more. The only complaint I had was that my g/f found plastic in her smoothie. At first I thought it was just a vegetable/fruit chunk of some sort because I found something in my sip but just figured. It was when she got another piece in her mouth that she took it out and we found plastic for the 2nd time. I let the girl know and she got us a new one immediately right away. Thankfully the new one had no chunks and tasted just as amazing. I really like this place. Theres a movie theater that we went to 10 mins away from here so in a way we had a little healthy afternoon date together. I really really like that Kitava gives you a lot of food. I was barely able to eat half of my bowl and I definitely couldn't eat a bite more. I ordered the tuna poke bowl, the stand alone item because the options to build the bowl were disappointing to say the least. The rice was mushy jasmine rice, not even sticky rice. The sauce that accompanied with the bowl was an spicy aoli. Very disappointing. If this restaurant is going to culturally appropriate dishes, they should do their research and make homage to the dish. Service was meh. Definitely not coming again. read more

I've been a fan of Kitava since the opening of the mission st location. The brownies are ALWAYS my go to and for bowls I really enjoy the mezze harvest bowl with beef add on. I just enjoyed a brunch burrito and omg it was sooo good- I'm glad I took the suggestion of the super sweet blonde gal. Let's talk customer service - I always have a really positive experience with all the staff - they seem really happy and they are always very helpful . The price is a little much but once in a while I like to treat myself ( and more often I sneak by the mission location and pick up one of those brownies) - also the serving sizes are pretty legit . Live from Oakland this is a gem! One day after the gym, I was starving and craving something healthy. I stopped in for their nuggets and wow--they are the bomb.com!
