Another evening in beautiful Oakland with my colleagues (7 of us) at dinner at Mua. JR was our server and JR was top notch with personality and helpfulness when it came to our food allergies (vegan and gluten free). Upon looking at the menu, I wanted everything! I'm not even kidding. Everything sounded great. The space is really cool as well inside with lots of that local art you know and love in the Oakland area. I ordered a margarita to start. Yum! For apps, we ordered the guac and chips alongside the fried calamari. I partook in the guac and chips, fresh and delish. Calamari was not gfree. For my main entree I split a beet salad with one of my colleagues, I can't say no to a beet salad. Then I ordered the mussels...which were so good. I loved the aioli on the top of the fries. I also had a bite of my colleagues coleslaw...and I will say it was the best non mayo based coleslaw I've ever had! Not kidding! It has red onion, green pepper, and cilantro. Wow What an adventure! MUA has set the stage for all of the yummy food I expect to have in Oakland! Such a great place as my first eatery as a new bay area resident. Arrived on time for my 8:00pm reservation and while people were definitely in ther having a good time, it was a quieter evening. Super smooth, a little sour, and delicious. For food, we had such a great few dishes to share: Beef Carpaccio - This was so good! I'm a huge lover of any kind of carpaccio so this one hit all of the cylinders for me. Thinly sliced and yummy with an arugula salad to pair it with. Delicious! Mushroom Crostini - I am so happy I am a fully formed adult who got over her hatred of mushrooms because this was too good! What can I say...Yummy mushrooms, crispy bread, and a delicious sauce. I was a happy camper! This also had some arugula paired with it. Chicken Wings - These were the fan favorite of the bunch! Give me a chicken wing with some great sauce and im your forever. Was heading to the City on a Saturday afternoon to hit up a play at the Orpheum Theatre and decided to grab dinner in Oakland along the way. Wow! What an amazing experience Mia was. First and foremost the ambiance is five stars. The minute you walk in you can feel a great vibe. Our server immediately took care of us from the moment we sat down. He explained the menu and ordered our drinks. We explained we were on a tight schedule and he was punctual with our dinner orders too. We had a large group of people that came out of town for an offside for our department. I called the restaurant, and the manager set up a reservation for me for 20 people through OpenTable and I got an email confirmation right away. We all sat at one long table, which was what we wanted. The dinner was great. Everybody enjoyed their meal and there was plenty for vegetarians and meteors alike. One of us had a birthday that day and I asked to bring something out for him as a surprise. I knew that he likes affogato so they stuck a sparkling candle into it, and it was quite a show. I don't drink alcohol much so I can't speak to the beverages, but they seemed to be OK. The Russian in our party who happened to be the birthday boy said they were a bit weak, but again I cannot judge that. Out of food, the stand outs were the crab poor boy, steak - which was humongous and came with stacked potatoes, mushroom crostini, and pretty much everything else. There were several desserts, and I tried the pecan heart with gelato, which was really nice. The space is a former car dealership so it's nice and wide, and the ceilings are really high, but there was no air-conditioning so it was a little hot even though it was in the evening and of course inside. It would have helped to have AC on that day. Normally, that's not an issue in Oajkland. All in all, everyone was happy with experience and we would do it again. 7/19/25 We finally got to try Mua in Oakland! It's been bookmarked for a few years. I would describe Mua as a very trendy restaurant and bar with a unique, artistic, and warehouse lofty atmosphere. They have a good menu and pours even better cocktails. Our server Juliana was nice and attentive as needed for our party of 12 with kids. We shared the Beef Bone Marrow. Came with toasted slices of baguette. Looked really good but got cold way too quick and there wasn't enough baguette for the very thick marrow served. Also ordered Brussel sprouts to share which was ok. I ordered the fried chicken which was cooked to perfection, crispy on the outside and tender on the inside. Served with cornbread and coleslaw but we opted for fries. Hubs ordered the salmon served on top of spinach, bacon and tomato - hubs said the spinach (salad?) was too tart for his preference. Oldest son ordered burrata which was served with grilled veggies and baguette. He said it was really good. Youngest son ordered the blackened catfish with dirty rice and aioli. He said it has too much aioli spread on the catfish but otherwise he really liked his meal. Chicken Milanese was bomb. I shared some chicken and fries with a girlfriend of mine and she shared the Milanese. If I came back, it would be my go too. We'd be back if in the area. Years ago, before Mua opened, I was an art instructor in Oakland. The owner, Hi-suk Dong, purchased several of my students' works from a local exhibition I had organized. The transaction was pleasant and professional. When Mua later opened, I occasionally visited, drawn mainly by the artwork on display--pieces that reminded me of my students' and my own work, and I was touched to see how some of my students' influence appeared in his art. When a new section of the restaurant opened, I attempted to view the artwork there. Mr. Dong abruptly turned me away at the door, claiming it was private. I returned at a later time when the section was open to the public. While I was quietly admiring the art, I noticed Mr. Dong staring at me with obvious disdain. That moment ended my visits to Mua. While the food and ambiance matter, a restaurant's character is ultimately shaped by its owner. Mr. Dong's treatment of a paying customer--and his apparent judgment based on appearance--fell short of basic hospitality. Respect for patrons, regardless of who they are, is fundamental to any establishment. read more

Visited MUA recently for the first time. Nearly missed it because the front room was dark, and it looked closed, but we made it to the door and saw the main part of the restaurant was in back of the building. Great decor. We immediately struck by the lighting and creativity in the spaces decoration. You enter through the "bar", but it creates intrigue. The main dining room is in a large warehouse type space, that also includes a loft with it's own bar. We had a reservation, and were quickly seated. We started with cocktails, which were interesting and well crafted. Since we were a small group, we did things family-style so we could explore the menu. We had chicken liver pate, burrata, "cheeseless" mac and cheese (butternut squash and shells), and a charred romaine salad to start, and then shared the rib eye steak, mussells, and a couple of other dishes. All were well prepared, served promptly, and delicious. Everyone enjoyed every bite as best I could tell. We finished with coffees and desert. We tried the bread pudding which was amazing - several people commented that may have been the best they had ever had, as well as the pineapple upsidedown cake - which was also quite tasty and well balanced. Overall we enjoyed our experience quite a lot! MUA has a lively atmosphere, great food and drinks, and great service. Well worth a visit if you are in the area! read more

We recently were looking for something new and exciting for a Valentines date, .Wifey and I are always doing the same routine in the East Bay area of Walnut Creek, Danville, and Lafayette area. I joined a friend here for a girls night and we had a great time. We stopped by on a Friday night, after work, and thankfully we were seated immediately. Our server wasn't the greatest, however. He actually sucked. Perhaps it was toward the end of his shift, but he wasn't really that friendly and spoke to us in a hurried tone. He didn't smile, and only checked on us once during our meal. We noticed other servers were checking on their tables periodically, and we were getting a little annoyed, because we wanted round 2 for our drinks. He also wasn't helpful at all, when we asked for recommendations. After we grabbed the check, we sat for a while longer, finishing off our drinks, when another server stopped by the table and asked us to sign for our meals. Ummm, we already took care of that. She was nice, informed us our server left for the night, and told us she would check for our signed receipts. But, nope, she couldn't locate them. Again, weird. I mean, I understand you're ready to get home, but you could've said goodnight and ensured that our signed receipts were accounted for. The food was okay....and with the service, I wont be going back. This is my favorite restaurant in Oakland! The restaurant is in a warehouse style building with Basquiat style art. They have a DJ on weekends and the genre varies. Overall it's a very Oakland vibe. The service is generally good, though they can get very busy. I recommend reservations for Friday and Saturday nights. All the food and drinks are delicious! The food options are a variety of cuisines, you can come here different and have a completely different style meal, and yet all the dishes pair well together. Whenever I come, I always get the no cheese mac n cheese. It sounds strange, but it's amazing. My favorite drink is the Billie Jean. MANAGER ON DUTY (4/18 - evening shift) REFUSES TO ACCOMMODATE FOOD ALLERGIES!! We ordered the Caesar salad, assuming like most places that the dressing was jarred or at least not made in-house with anchovies. Typically, when most restaurants make it in-house, it's clearly stated in their menu. This was not the case here. When I took a bite, I immediately realized it had anchovies in it--something my friend is allergic to. I told her not to eat it, and we let the staff know right away. Instead of being understanding, the manager refused to replace it with something else because it was "half eaten." I had literally taken one bite and told my friend not to touch it. When I pointed that out, the manager snarkily said, "We don't do samples here." I've never felt so insulted. We weren't trying to sample anything--we just wanted a replacement so my friend could have something to eat without risking an allergic reaction. The complete lack of empathy or willingness to accommodate a food allergy was honestly shocking and incredibly disappointing. We won't be coming back. It's too bad because I liked it here, but can't support a business who treats customers like this. I should also mention that the fries were soggy and cold, and the tofu wasn't crispy. The meat was fall off the bone tender but had a nice charred crisp you still had to cut through. The sauce had a mole quality. We were even more surprised that the menu consisted mostly of comfort favorites. Co-owners Hi-Suk and San-Ju Dong have an extensive culinary background that wouldn't settle for a straight forward homestyle execution. The vibe and space is amazing! They even have a room for private events. Loved the artwork and the staff there! The food was decent but sometimes hit or miss. The Brussels sprouts for us just were not seasoned enough and not crispy enough. The wings were saucy and so flavorful! The bone marrow was tasty but the presentation made it more difficult to serve. If it was cut in half it would be easier to scoop out and serve to the table etc. I really enjoyed the no cheese mac and cheese! It definitely doesn't taste like cheese but the flavors were still tasty and creamy! The fried polenta and that sauce was packed full of spices and flavor with just a slight heat. You've got to try the grilled Caesar salad! I'm not one for cutting my salad but the love was definitely put into this salad. The ribeye steak was so yummy with that herb butter and so big it is perfect to share! Now the real star of the show in my opinion are the cocktails! Beautifully mixed and they know what they are doing! The flourless almond cake was unfortunately super dry. So back in the day prior to being on Yelp we stopped in here all the time after work which was close by. Hey, no judgement, when you work in finance and IT you need a break from the day. After dropping in here after prolly 5 years it was nice to see some things haven't changed. We may have sat in the dining room once or twice but usually at the bar. The drinks are always great and the food choices work for us. Since I usually drink tequila I'm easy. My partner gets stuff more complicated but always perfect. Great vibe. The flavor of the sauce was nicely balanced. - Brussel Sprouts: These were just ok, probably wouldn't order again. We just ordered it to have some greens lol. - Beef Bone Marrow: Probably one of our top fav appetizers of the night. I didn't like the pickles but that's just cus dislike pickles. - Fried Calamari: My fav dish of the night, it was breaded nicely and was so light/crispy. Comes with two sauces but honestly great on its own with some lemon juice on top! - Ribs: The meat was falling off the bone, it was soo good! Loved the sauce it was smothered in. A little messy to eat (obviously) but totally worth it! Entree: - Fried Chicken: My partner and I shared this entree. The cornbread was really good and moist. The chicken wasn't heavily breaded and was fried to perfection, chicken was also juice/moist. The coleslaw was just ok, wish we could've subbed for fries but they don't allow modifications. Luckily we ordered a side of fries so that paired nicely with the fried chicken. Overall, this is a great meeting spot for drinks and light snacks. If getting entrees, just know the portions aren't the biggest but the food is really delicious! Parking is a bit rough on busy nights, there is a parking lot however the lot and the surrounding street was already packed at 7:30pm. This restaurant was highly rated. I was super excited and I even made reservation just in case there was a long line. There wasn't. The ribeye was a bit disappointing. There wasn't much marbling and it was on the dry side. But the appetizers were excellent. I would definitely come here just for the appetizers and drinks. Service was good. When there's music, I imagine this place to be hopping. Overall, it was very good. For Thinsulin fans, there's many green light options. read more
