TLDR: Immaculate vibes and friendly staff. The atmosphere and huge layout of the place are super nice - maybe one of the best in the city - and it's definitely a great place to have a big party or gathering. Lots of different open sections, many open spaces and large tables covering a huge foot print. Lots of TVs, good music/sound system, and lots of plants used to split up the tables and create a great environment. Food could be slightly improved. I'll definitely be back and give it another try. Come here for the vibes, drinks, and atmosphere - which are without a doubt a 5 star experience - but if you want good authentic Mexican food, look elsewhere. Food, I'd give a generous 3.5 stars to 3.8 stars, at best. I was really excited to try their food but honestly it tasted bland, unpolished, and unrefined. I have a feeling their target audience is someone that doesn't like spice so they punish those of us that actually like them. For example, my fish tacos didn't have pico de gallo or hot salsa, my rice and beans were NOT even topped with any sour cream (a Mexican delight) or fresh grated queso fresco. These are two very simple ways to elevate the dish and was a miss in my book. Their mole dish was nicely plated but for the taste the mole was not up to par - it tasted sweet and not authentic, there was no depth in the flavor you're used to tasting for mole. Drinks were 5 stars without a doubt and I had the best Paloma I've ever had in my life. I also highly recommend the Alabama slammer super yummy and tasty it's like a punch but not too sweet. The drinks did take a solid 30+ minutes to get delivered so that was a bummer. If they were quicker I would've gotten a second round but I didn't feel like risking waiting around for another half hour for them. Parking is pretty good but it's still Oakland - I do appreciate that they hire a super friendly security guard attendant at a nearby dedicated parking lot location for a modest $5 charge. Don't forget to tip the parking lot attendant doing the lords work! The last thing I would mention is that if you're sensitive to smells, this is an outdoor place right off the bay (1-2 blocks) and near some Amtrak train tracks (which pass hourly or so), so there is a faint and occasional odor of bay water and some brake dust or diesel fumes when trains pass occasionally. read more

My food was great. I ordered the papas flautas and the baby potato appetizer they have 10/10. I ordered a cosmopolitan for my drink it was also delicious, just super small. Service was good. When we got there we stood in line for about 10 minutes, no reservations. Nidos Backyard was such a fun place to spend the afternoon! I was especially excited because it's dog friendly, so I was able to bring my pup along. We hung out, watched the game, and enjoyed some really great food and treats together. The atmosphere was relaxed and made it easy to settle in for a while. I've been a Nido supporter since before they had their first brick-and-mortar, so it was especially fun to see them reimagine this space into what it is today, which was a literal parking lot sandwiched between a busy street and the train tracks. The shipping-container setup makes the whole thing feel like a little oasis. There are plenty of great options whether you're stopping by for food, drinks, or both. The totopos con salsa y guacamole are always a good way to start, even if you're just there for a few drinks. While there are lots of great dishes on the menu, the media quesabirria is my favorite. read more

Food-wise, nothing was really calling my name, but we decided on the Aguachile de Chile Pasilla (fish in a chile lime sauce with avocado, jicama, and chips on the side). Honestly, we both agreed we could've each had our own, it was that good. Parking is a bit limited, but there's a dirt lot across the street. Just be careful crossing, as traffic can get busy. Does not accommodate senior dogs in modest stroller. My pooch can't walk. The holdup was his stroller was "in the way". However, will allow wild children to run amongst the entire property un-supervised. Also many other large strollers were there, with human babies though. They do have a few space heaters for the not so warm days. I love the Baja fish tacos here, pretty much all the tacos. Although, since I'm not a fan of brussels sprouts, I never get the vegetable taco. The Carnitas, Chicken and Carne Asada are all delicious. Margaritas And Mezcalitas are pretty special here. Good house too - Cimarron tequila. The bartenders know what they're doing. And the servers always bring good vibes along with your food. FYI, it's all outdoors. Some of the area is covered and they have a lot of heaters. Great place to have an event too. They have a few options to set up a private area for you. Don't even think about leaving something visible in your car or even in the trunk. Even if there's something hidden, if it's in your car and of value, use their secure parking lot. Nido's backyard reminds me of hanging out at your cool tia's backyard. Drinks are flowing, food is top notch, and I'm always dancing in my chair to the tunes. Parking is $5 across the street with monitored security or free street parking. Pay at Nido's before you leave or you'll be walking back. The service is wonderful. We are somehow seated even though it's busy. Honestly, we usually sit at the bar to avoid waiting. I will not let time get in the way of me and guacamole! I love to explore their house-made salsas. My new favorite is the salsa de macha. I ordered guac and chips, veggie tacos, and my ultimate seasonal favorite...quesadilla de calabacitas y flor de calabaza. We've been going to Nido's for many years now. Last night we took our family who was visiting Oakland out to dinner. The food was fine. The issue I'm going to write about here is how we ordered three frozen drinks and were met with disappointment. My family and I came on a Saturday afternoon with no reservation and we were able to be seated right away. I ordered the quesabirria with consomé and it was delicious! The cheese to meat ratio was perfect. I paired it with their agua fresca of the day, which was a pepino/limón flavor and it was very refreshing. Our service was good and the ambiance was pleasant! I went to Nido's backyard Saturday, March 28 with my wife and my son and I got it to go order for my daughter. My wife had this fish tacos. They're made with rock fish and she will enjoy them. You could have them the way you like them and you get two with an order she also had a Mojito, which was so so when we got there, it was happy hour so the chips sauce and guacamole that we ordered were on the happy hour menu and they were pretty reasonable. Abigail was our server. She was pretty busy so not only did I have to get up and go to the front to get the email. I mean that the Wi-Fi password I also have to get up to go get my own to go box. This was a nice place. It's like a backyard setting and I'd recommend it. I go again as well, my son had the chicken tacos. He actually wanted the steak tacos, but he likes them plain and the steak tacos are made with onions mixed in with the meat and the chicken or not so he had the chicken tacos and he enjoyed them myself I had the mole enchiladas and they were good. I can't eat that much so I took them to go one of them and I also enjoyed the chips and salsa and guacamole with the exception of my server being very busy I highly recommended if you're not in a hurry and if you want a good meal with a great ambience, I made my reservation on Rezy! When I got there, they led me to a nice table and gave me an option of several different tables and it was quite cool and I saw some people that I recognize there. It's been a while since I've been to Nido's Backyard. My dad and I were heading to the Coliseum..yes, you heard that right..sport is back at the Coliseum and we were heading to a game! Nido's is located near Jack London and also the freeway to jump off for a nosh and head back on your way. The space is even more spacious and vibrant than I remember, with a fun happy hour, Pride specials, and overall just great vibe. We ordered Totopos Con Salsa Y Guacamole (chips, salsa, guac), Flautas De Papas Con Rajas (veggie/potato filled flautas), Tostada De Tinga (chicken tostada), and the Fish Baja taco plate with rice and beans. Overall, so yum! The guac is creamy, the salsas hit just right, love the fresh crunch of all the items we ordered ~ from the beer battered fish to the chicken marinated in chipotle flavors..all chef's kiss. I noticed a quesabirria on the menu and would love to come back to split this with friends! Essentially birria meat added to a large flour cheese quesadilla ($20) The margs here and bar area are such a great draw for the area and Oakland. My only qualm is the happy hour drink menu is missing a marg of any kind. Could be a cool addition to introduce the margs with a price tag cut while snacking on the happy hour food menu :) Street parking can be found outside the restaurant. Looks like they're now doing private events and I heard they also do fun venue events like comedy, etc ~ can't wait to come back as the weather is heating up this summer. read more

I came to NIDO's for a work event in 2023. My first time here and the decor is absolutely stunning. I love the open air concept and enclosed areas as well. It was a large group of us about 20. The cocktails were delicious. I helped myself to two since the company was paying and we had various appetizers to try. Our server held it down for such a big group. The food was amazing. I got a vegetarian dish that was delicious. It's not pictured as I was so hungry I forgot to capture the delicious food. The event was nice to connect with colleagues as we all work remote and to meet the owner of her remote business so NIDO definitely made this special for us. Overall, it was a lovely experience and knowing they can handle a huge table of people with ease. All the food is fresh and homemade. Definitely would dine here again! read more

Went to NIDO's with the family on the weekend. They have a large outdoor (only) seating area but the weather was nice and sunny so it was perfect. Loved the vibe too as they were playing 90's hip hop (the golden age)! We started with chips with generous heaps of salsa and guacamole! We had a group of 8 and half of us ordered the quesabirria! And it did not disappoint! 3 giant loaded slices filled with succulent braised beef, gooey cheese and a nice bowl of hot consommé for dipping. After coming to dinner on a hot evening in August and a cold night in January, I can say it's fun no matter when. NIDO's backyard earned the title of "Oakland's only margarita garden" because it's quite possibly one of the best places to enjoy a margarita in the Town on a beautiful day. The owners and managers that work here are so passionate about creating a lively atmosphere with lots of cool events for the community. The ambience is super unique and unlike anything in the rest of Oakland, they've taken an underutilized space and really made their vision come to life. They have plenty of vegetarian and vegan options, which is great for me! And you can get a pitcher of margaritas with the girls and enjoy some live entertainment multiple times a week. This is one of my favorite spots to go to lunch with a group. They have plenty of seating and lots of room for private event rentals as well. When we finally made it to the front, the employee announced there was room for two more people. Since our group had four people, we took a brief moment to decide which two of us would go in first. Instead of waiting just a few seconds, he allowed two people who had been standing behind us to cut in front and enter ahead of us. After waiting more than two hours, letting other people skip the line simply because we were deciding who would go first was incredibly disrespectful and completely unfair. We had already earned our place in line, and there was no excuse for allowing others to cut ahead of us. It showed a complete lack of organization and basic customer service. To make matters worse, the food and drinks were overpriced, and the staff was rude throughout the experience. If this is how they manage large events, they seriously need to improve. Stopped by with a friend for a Sunday brunch. First time being here and I see why people like it - the atmosphere of the place is great. You have plenty of outdoor seating surrounded by colorful items and plants. We were seated right away considering we got here when they opened. The service was very good - they were polite, helpful and quick. My friend got the chilaquiles which looked amazing and a good portion for one person. So why not 5/5? My order came next and was very disappointing. I was looking for a leaner meal and saw that they had the chicken tacos. 2 chicken tacos for a little over $12???? Well these better be some out of this world filling tacos right? Wrong. My plate arrived and it was very sad - yes you can add beans and rice but for an additional $6 which I could not justify getting. The chicken was very dry and tacos should NOT cost $6 each - makes no sense when there are plenty of taco joints surrounding the area that are fair price.
