Food - ordered the fish taco, caldo tlalpeno and guiso and for drinks, got horchata and beer. Service - super fast! Server came super fast after seating us, we ordered and food came within 15 minutes. Ambiance - cute spot, lots of outdoor seating, dog friendly Overall food was good. I wish the fish tacos came in flour tortilla but the horchata was AMAZING. The caldo tlapeno was also super flavorful. Only thing about the guiso was the cheese wasn't as melted as we preferred. They have a destined private parking lot that costs $5.

I really dig the colorful outdoorsy vibes here. I'm not usually a margarita fan but they had one with mezcal that was pretty nice. I came here specifically for the fish tacos. Super crispy batter, flaky fish, and chewy homemade tortilla. I was pretty happy with them. The rice and beans needed a bit more seasoning but otherwise decent.

I went to Nido's backyard Saturday, March 28 with my wife and my son and I got it to go order for my daughter. My wife had this fish tacos. They're made with rock fish and she will enjoy them. You could have them the way you like them and you get two with an order she also had a Mojito, which was so so when we got there, it was happy hour so the chips sauce and guacamole that we ordered were on the happy hour menu and they were pretty reasonable. Abigail was our server. She was pretty busy so not only did I have to get up and go to the front to get the email. I mean that the Wi-Fi password I also have to get up to go get my own to go box. This was a nice place. It's like a backyard setting and I'd recommend it. I go again as well, my son had the chicken tacos. He actually wanted the steak tacos, but he likes them plain and the steak tacos are made with onions mixed in with the meat and the chicken or not so he had the chicken tacos and he enjoyed them myself I had the mole enchiladas and they were good. I can't eat that much so I took them to go one of them and I also enjoyed the chips and salsa and guacamole with the exception of my server being very busy I highly recommended if you're not in a hurry and if you want a good meal with a great ambience, I made my reservation on Rezy! When I got there, they led me to a nice table and gave me an option of several different tables and it was quite cool and I saw some people that I recognize there. I'd recommend them to you if you wanna go and I'd go there again and they have a sister or brother Restaurant right around the corner just called Odin's the name spelled backwards.

Nido's Backyard doesn't take a backseat to any restaurant. This place is legitimately great. And it takes advantage of Oakland frequent sunshine. They do have a few space heaters for the not so warm days. I love the Baja fish tacos here, pretty much all the tacos. Although, since I'm not a fan of brussels sprouts, I never get the vegetable taco. The Carnitas, Chicken and Carne Asada are all delicious. Margaritas And Mezcalitas are pretty special here. Good house too - Cimarron tequila. The bartenders know what they're doing. And the servers always bring good vibes along with your food. FYI, it's all outdoors. Some of the area is covered and they have a lot of heaters. Great place to have an event too. They have a few options to set up a private area for you. Don't even think about leaving something visible in your car or even in the trunk. Even if there's something hidden, if it's in your car and of value, use their secure parking lot. Follow the signs.

Went to NIDO's with the family on the weekend. They have a large outdoor (only) seating area but the weather was nice and sunny so it was perfect. Loved the vibe too as they were playing 90's hip hop (the golden age)! We started with chips with generous heaps of salsa and guacamole! We had a group of 8 and half of us ordered the quesabirria! And it did not disappoint! 3 giant loaded slices filled with succulent braised beef, gooey cheese and a nice bowl of hot consommé for dipping. I could only scarf down two slices but was thankful to keep the last slice for dinner at home. NIDO's is a vibe!!

Nido's Backyard has done it again. I came here on a Sunday afternoon with a friend for lunch and we had a great time, especially with the beautiful weather. Staff and Service: - Our waitress was great and very helpful - Staff at the check-in counter were disinfecting the menus. While we are not in the prime of Covid, I always appreciate cleanliness and this was comforting to see Food and Drinks: - Margarita Mocktail: they have a non-alcoholic margarita in a can, which was fun - Agua Fresca: we learned that they don't like to waste ingredients, so they go through various agua Fresca flavors in one day. This is so smart and friendly to the planet. When we went, the flavor was watermelon, mint, and pineapple - refreshing! - Media Quesabirria: we shared this, which was a good call. It was delicious, flavorful, and very filling. Comes with consome, hot sauce, and sour cream - Ensalada Picada: this was much better than I thought it would be. The persimmon slices were a fun addition and the whole salad was delicious Miscellaneous: - They validate parking if you use the legates security lot across the street - Gender-neutral bathrooms available - Plenty of outdoor seating for all group sizes

Nido's backyard reminds me of hanging out at your cool tia's backyard. Drinks are flowing, food is top notch, and I'm always dancing in my chair to the tunes. Parking is $5 across the street with monitored security or free street parking. Pay at Nido's before you leave or you'll be walking back. The service is wonderful. We are somehow seated even though it's busy. Honestly, we usually sit at the bar to avoid waiting. I will not let time get in the way of me and guacamole! I love to explore their house-made salsas. My new favorite is the salsa de macha. I ordered guac and chips, veggie tacos, and my ultimate seasonal favorite...quesadilla de calabacitas y flor de calabaza. It's not autumn unless I get one of these. This quesadilla is not like the others. There's something beautiful about eating delicate flowers. The petals just melt in your mouth. Get fancy and give this a try. Another favorite is the coconut horchata....I can never have enough. For my lactose-free and vegan besties, this one is for you!

This is a great spot if you want to enjoy drinks and food with a friend or a large party, they have plenty of outdoor seating and space to spread out. The sangria is my favorite! The food is okay, I had higher hopes for the queso. The service is always good as well. They have a really good tequila section too! Definitely a place to check out if in Oakland.

Stopped by Nido's on a visit to the Bay to see family. This place wasn't around when I was growing up in the Bay Area so my brother was excited to take me. I love the use of the space with lots of hybrid indoor/outdoor space. You can get both vibes here. They had a DJ outside and more family style dining inside. Lots of large parties on a Sunday afternoon. Our server was great and the food and drinks came fairly quickly. We shared the steak tacos and queso which were ok. We enjoyed our cocktails much more. Overall, beautiful space. The food was fine. Drinks were divine and the vibes were there. I'd definitely revisit.

Agua fresca and quesabirria with consomé

My family and I came on a Saturday afternoon with no reservation and we were able to be seated right away. I ordered the quesabirria with consomé and it was delicious! The cheese to meat ratio was perfect. I paired it with their agua fresca of the day, which was a pepino/limón flavor and it was very refreshing. Our service was good and the ambiance was pleasant! The only downside is that parking can be a little tricky because of the location, but aside from street parking, there is a lot across the street that you can pay to park at.

It's been a while since I've been to Nido's Backyard. My dad and I were heading to the Coliseum..yes, you heard that right..sport is back at the Coliseum and we were heading to a game! Nido's is located near Jack London and also the freeway to jump off for a nosh and head back on your way. The space is even more spacious and vibrant than I remember, with a fun happy hour, Pride specials, and overall just great vibe. We ordered Totopos Con Salsa Y Guacamole (chips, salsa, guac), Flautas De Papas Con Rajas (veggie/potato filled flautas), Tostada De Tinga (chicken tostada), and the Fish Baja taco plate with rice and beans. Overall, so yum! The guac is creamy, the salsas hit just right, love the fresh crunch of all the items we ordered ~ from the beer battered fish to the chicken marinated in chipotle flavors..all chef's kiss. I noticed a quesabirria on the menu and would love to come back to split this with friends! Essentially birria meat added to a large flour cheese quesadilla ($20) The margs here and bar area are such a great draw for the area and Oakland. My only qualm is the happy hour drink menu is missing a marg of any kind. Could be a cool addition to introduce the margs with a price tag cut while snacking on the happy hour food menu :) Street parking can be found outside the restaurant. Looks like they're now doing private events and I heard they also do fun venue events like comedy, etc ~ can't wait to come back as the weather is heating up this summer.

I came to NIDO's for a work event in 2023. My first time here and the decor is absolutely stunning. I love the open air concept and enclosed areas as well. It was a large group of us about 20. The cocktails were delicious. I helped myself to two since the company was paying and we had various appetizers to try. Our server held it down for such a big group. The food was amazing. I got a vegetarian dish that was delicious. It's not pictured as I was so hungry I forgot to capture the delicious food. The event was nice to connect with colleagues as we all work remote and to meet the owner of her remote business so NIDO definitely made this special for us. Overall, it was a lovely experience and knowing they can handle a huge table of people with ease. All the food is fresh and homemade. Definitely would dine here again!

This place is such a nice summer spot! Plenty of outdoor seating! Be sure to make a reservation as it gets busy and park in their parking lot with security because, it's Oakland and there is a high chance your car will be broken into otherwise. We ordered a Paloma and peanut snack for the table. We also had the aguachile, chicken tacos and the corn. Everything was soo good and the service was great as well. It's all dog friendly which is great. Definitely recommend it!

NIDO's BackYard Reviews in Other Languages

Ask the Community - NIDO's BackYard

    Outdoor seating include dog friendly?

Yes! Fully "outside" so dogs can enjoy all over!

Does the paid parking have security?

Yes, there’s a security kiosk when you drive up where you get your parking pass, though I’ve been there once when the kiosk was unattended (maybe they needed a bathroom break?)

Do they offer high chairs for babies?

    Yes, we do!

If I come with a group of 10, would separate checks be allowed? I'm asking folks to meet me for happy hour but not paying for everyone.

You can order through QR code. So, yes, you can

    Are reservations required or available?

Reservations are available but not required. If you're going at a busy time it is good to have them for prime seating but there is usually some seating available.

I see that dogs are allowed in the front area. Are dogs allowed in the main restaurant area?

Yes, they are allowed as long as they're on a leash and well behaved

    Gluten free options?

Yes, yes, yes! They have many. I've been gluten free for years and I appreciated their offerings. They had lots of corn masa based offerings, so it should be relatively easy to find something. Good luck!

How loud are the trains when they pass by the restaurant? In other parts of Jack London Square the trains were super loud, probably due to heavier pedestrian traffic. We like to bring our dog with us to restaurants. She is frightened by loud noise.

Was there for 2 hrs on a weekday at midday and heard no trains or any loud noises. But if there were trains, they'd be right there running through the place!!

Do you have to have a vaccination card?

They did not ask for ours when we went

Do you have to have a reservation?

No, you don't, but just like any hot spot in Oakland, it's a good idea to have one.

What are the happy hour times?

They unfortunately do not have happy hour

It seems that everyone is parking in the illegal parking lot or in the bike lane and are getting tickets. Where do you suggest that we park?

I parked in the small lot across the street with no issues. The street parking had soooo much broken glass, so definitely keep your seats down and have no valuables in your car

What's the difference between a patio table and garden patio for the reservations?

The garden is at the front of near the entrance. There are larger tables to the right and smaller cocktail tables to the left. The patio tables are inside another area further down and are generally larger tables. No difference in food options from… Read more

Great to see this place has wifi. I need a quiet place with wifi to work remotely. Does this place play loud music in the outdoor seating area? many restaurants even with outdoor dining have very loud music which makes it hard to work/take calls.

During the weekend the music was loud enough that it would probably be heard on the phone.

    Are there outdoor TVs?

    Yes

    Is this place 21+?

There's a sign outside that says all children must be accompanied by adults, so family friendly!

    Are dogs allowed?

Judging from the dog others at my table brought the answer is yes!

When will you be open for business?

"Preview" nights started September 6 5-9 and same hours September 7. Waitress said same next weekend 9/13 and 9/14 and open daily or so starting the weekend after that. You can follow them on Instagram @nidosbackyard for updates.

I admittedly arrived around 5:15pm on a Saturday and they close at 6pm, so it was the last hour of service. Nonetheless, the arrival started off good with a server greeting me and my partner before we sat down. We used the QR code to place our order which conveniently had a lot of check box options to customize our orders. I got a smash burger and substituted a vegan beyond patty. According to their menu, the smash burger comes with special sauce, cheese, red onions, bacon, lettuce, mustard, and pickles. I customized mine to have no bacon, no cheese, and no mustard, and for the pickle to be on the side. The smash burger I got was not what I ordered. It was a sad, small burger, with very little sauce and by that I mean practically none, barely any lettuce, and they did not give me red onions or a pickle. I was immediately disappointed when it arrived at my table and my partner insisted we say something because the order was incorrect and it was $28 for the burger and side of fries. We had also ordered drinks which were good but expensive. After my partner talked to a server and cashier, they just said "we will check to see what your order was." The server came back to our table, did not apologize or anything and just said "yeah we looked at your order and this is exactly it." I couldn't believe what they said and took a minute to process before I responded with no it's not, that's the whole point why I said something. I told them there is very little sauce and no onions. I forgot to mention that there was no pickle either, but that was another thing wrong. The server offered to remake it or just bring me out the missing sides. I was annoyed, they were about to close, and at this point I knew I would not be coming back and I was hungry so I accepted them just bringing out sides. They brought out white onions, not red onions, and a side of sauce. Thinking about this whole experience from the service, lack of apology and accountability, mid food, small portions, and overpriced menu, I would not recommend this place to anyone.

This was served with a little mozzarella + tomato salad with all of the balsamic glaze. Super yummy and perfectly medium rare. Next time, I can just have this on its own. Definitely a star. Next, I had the duck breast which sat on a bed of spinach risotto. Very delicious and also cooked perfectly. Being Taylor, I had to finish out the dinner with another cocktail (lemon drop) that was great and finally I had a little glass of port as my dessert. All in al a great little dinner at Alley & Vine. Thanks again to Janet and the team for some excellent service and incredible food.

We were greeted warmly and we each ordered a drink to start. I got the blood orange sour, which was tasty, and my friend got the strawberry margarita, which she enjoyed. I ordered the seafood pasta, while my friend got the spinach seafood risotto. I will state the obvious, these are just about the two most expensive dishes on the menu, but man, they had heaps of seafood and were absolutely delicious! When I say heaps, I mean the shrimp and scallops were giant, there were mussels and clams and crab meat. 100% worth it! We finished the meal with the tiramisu and that was ok. Honorable mention to our server who was attentive without being overbearing. I would absolutely come back and would highly recommend!

Review is for the London Bus Burger, Louie Louie (soft-shelled crab) and onion rings! The Bureau 510 gets their burgers right: lightly seasoned, not overly handled so you can feel the wonderful texture along with some major juiciness. Also a big plus is their meat-to-bun ratio so you get a nice bite of burger with the sturdy yet soft bun. The Louie Louie looked amazing. My 2 friends ordered that and devoured. It was lightly battered, not greasy and a nice size. Onion rings were house-made and equally light with a beer batter. Delicious! Staff very welcoming, friendly and checked on us a couple of times. Menu has plenty of options to choose from. The Bureau 510 did a great job (has me craving more!) this visit so will definitely return to try items like the fish and chips, clam chowder and Chef Specials. Pricing is in line with other like places. Plenty of metered street parking. Another location in Emeryville I'll need to check out :)

I ordered a classic martini with a twist, it wasn't my favorite drink ever but it was made well, just not my usual. After that I ordered a classic margarita which was super good and came with a black salt rim and dehydrated lime. The margarita was super tasty and both drinks were made right away! For food, I ordered the chips and salsa and guac. The guac was very good, it tasted fresh and was a good size portion. The salsa was really good, it was chipotle tasting but had a lime tanginess to it that was unique and refreshing. They were generous with the portion of chips and the chips were thick and crispy and seasoned well with just a little bit of salt. I also ordered the impossible taquitos which came with guac, sour cream, and salsa on top. The presentation was beautiful and the food came out fast but the taste was a bit weird, it wasn't bad but it just tasted like burger meat in a taquito. I really appreciate that they offered a meat alternative but wish it tasted better, like maybe use potatoes instead of fake meat, or use fake chorizo over a burger seasoning. It would also be nice if there was a vegan version not just a vegetarian version. Despite my critiques of the food, I have no critiques for the service and atmosphere! My server was phenomenal and attentive and checked in often! I had a great experience and look forward to coming back but would definitely be more eager to come back if they updated with more vegan options!

You definitely feel 10 degrees cooler in here. From the dark moody lighting, tons of vinyl on the wall, beautiful people, everything was stunning. Definitely bring your ID since they will check at the door, once you're inside, you definitely feel like you stepped into your older brother's cool friend secret hideaway. Drinks were great and there was so many to choose from. I can't remember the drink I got but it was served up in a cute glass and was delicious. The DJ was fantastic and played a ton of old and new school hits. I think this qualifies as a "listening bar" so cool. Totally great trip to Bar shiru! I will, without a doubt, be back.

I ordered moonglow not knowing it's a very intense drink, so had to order actual proof as backup. They're very accommodating and can make any drink sweeter, so I opted for that. Actual proof is very refreshing with a nice citrus flavor! It seemed to be a popular drink since other folks also ordered it. Moonglow has a lot of complexity to it, and it's concentrated (no ice). Lucky spring was very citrus forward with some bitter notes, but we couldn't taste the guava. We also got free pretzels to munch on! This spot makes great cocktails and they also have a sister bar and restaurant called golden palm nearby. Worth trying this spot for good vibes and delicious drinks!
