TL;DR: I wish the food was more impressive, the salt and pepper wings are bland. Misha's a great staff member, thoroughly enjoyed the vibe for two days, today was awful though; staff on a Tuesday are like cops. I came there on Sunday for their improv and Misha was extremely friendly as a bartender, great energy, very thoughtful and no notes; the salt and pepper chicken wings are large and far from seasoned, I feel like just "chicken wings with random chopped chilis scattered haphazardly atop" is more honest. It was such a fun time that I came again last night on a Monday; had a chiki shot and an agua frescas (AMAZING agua frescas, and they had my favorite Amara Na Nino in stock) and I had a fun time mingling with staff (shoutout to Misha), learning of all the events they've got goin' on, even made friends with a guy coming in from out of town! Had a GREAT great cocktail (the one with gin and vodka, and a silly little name attached... I hate that I forgot it, the Bit-Mut? Aaaaa it'll come to me later.) And despite the salt and pepper wings being flavorless and the only redeeming quality being the pure mass of 'em with the cilantro ranch (i hate cilantro but that cilantro ranch was CRACK, none of the soap and all of the heaven, its basically an aioli) And had a great time, came back tonight (around 6:55pm i think) maybe about 20 minutes ago... I come in, the bartender doesn't remotely greet me at all, I ask if a stool that's pushed back is taken already, he grumbles a no in response. He seemed pretty busy, so I chalked it up as just him being stressed, there were a lot more people there than usual, and god knows the pain of making several back to back margaritas for a table of women. (The arm workout alone, oof.) I sit down, pick up two menus, the bartender still doesn't acknowledge me, but without looking at me, takes two other menus and plops 'em in front of me, and as I reached for those, took the ones I was looking at. (I guess I was looking at two happy hour menus, hmm.) Anyway, he does eventually no eye contact or greeting hand me a cup of water, I thank him, still kinda treated invisible, whether he's making drinks or not. And then its only been 3, absolutely 5 maximum minutes of me sipping on my water and peering at the menus (I was debating on dinner or a drink, or an agua frescas, and an agua frescas sounded SUPER good but it was already noisy and a weird energy compared to the friendliness and warmth of the days before, so I was debating how long I'd stay) when the bartender FINALLY looks up at me and says "Want any drinks?" I say Oh, no", politely. He looks incredulously at me with his hands up and says "Any... FOOD?", and I just say "Oh no, not yet thanks," I say with a smile as I still am looking at the menu. Cue another staff member spawning seemingly out of nowhere to get a liiiiiiiiiittle too up in my grill with a questioning frown and his arms crossed slightly to be like "Is there any reason you are struggling to pick an item on the menu yet, maam?", and I don't know if he meant to give off a security guard/bouncer energy as he was or if he just came off a lot more intruding and off than expected, but I just explained how I came two days in a row and loved the spot and was taking awhile to think on what I wanted; and it felt like talking to a cop about why I'm sitting at the bar and staring at a menu, not like, a friendly bartender in my area. Anyway, that experience did take it from "Would happily come here with a spare moment and some cash even for an agua frescas and a nice little vibe" to "I gotta shower to get the ick from that spot off me, I'll avoid for now". I came in nicely dressed too, my Kate Spade and nice sundress and earring combo too, actually disappointing. Ah well, maybe another Sunday or something. read more

We decided to check out Low Bar, which is a very cozy and welcoming spot that locals frequently visit. As it was a Friday during happy hour, more folks slowly started to trickle in. As a group of 2, we sat at a table and the staff assisted us right away. They were very kind and helpful with provide recommendations and answering any questions we had about the menu. The food took about 10 minutes or so, along with the drinks that we had. The presentation of each plate was lovely and very appealing to look at! Starting with the blue corn hush puppies, these had a crispy exterior with almost a smoky-like flavor from the blue corn. As you bite into it, the interior practically melts in your mouth. Squeezing the lime on it added that nice citrus kick that really balanced it out. The low bar nachos were delicious - what really stood out to me were the refried beans and the kick from the fresh jalapeños and fresh red onion slices in each bite. It was perfect for my nacho craving. The beer battered fish tacos came in 2 which we were able to share. On a fresh tortilla, it had nice chunks of fish that were well seasoned and not oily at all - the batter was both light and airy. Combined with the fresh condiments, I kept coming back for more and I really loved it! I didn't try any of the drinks this time but did get a non-alcoholic mocktail, which was the pina con nada. Even without the alcohol, I appreciated the balance of sour and sweet flavors. For next time, I'm excited to continue exploring more of their drink menu with looked amazing. Stopped by Low Bar before a concert at Fox Theater and it did not disappoint! Dishes came out piping hot (loved the shrimp tacos and wings) and the cocktails were tasty as well. Absolutely obsessed with this bar, especially for brunch! The hamachi crudo has been a favorite for years as well as the huevos rancheros!!

There's probably some cool reason this popular place is called Low Bar, but given I'm not Generation X, Y, or Z, I'm not privy to its inner meaning. In my jaded geriatric mind, I immediately presumed they set a low bar when it came to their food. Fortunately I was wrong. Jamie W and I came here with another couple who live close by and consider this their hangout spot. We were looking to catch up. We had a round of cocktails of which I was tasteful enough just to photograph mine, the $14 Ping Island Strike, a rather bitter concoction of coconut fat washed bourbon (whatever that is), Starward two-fold whiskey (whatever that is), Campari, passionfruit, and bitters (Photo 7). It had kick, just not quite enough. The food, however, was good and pretty well executed for what were essentially bar bites. We first shared the Oysters on a Half Shell, a fresh dozen of them over ice at $3.80 each with green pepper mignonette, a spicy tartar sauce, and lemon wedges (Photo 9). Nice start. We then shared the $12 Mushroom Toast, a creatively flavorful mix of king trumpets, poblano pepper relish, garlic confit, champagne vin, and herbs on Firebrand sourdough (Photo 5). I kinda wished we ordered two. That was when the $8 bowl of Fries arrived, just plain house cut Kennebec fries with chamoy mayonnaise but they were just in time for our group consumption (Photo 6). Next came the protein double-header, first the $14 Pollo Asado Tacos, a pair of them overflowing with marinated chicken, queso fresco, and Haitian pikliz atop corn tortillas accompanied by braised greens topped with crunchy tortilla strips (Photo 4). The deliciously carnivorous finale came with the $29 Adobo BBQ Ribs, a generous half rack of pork ribs gratefully separated and covered with a savory guajillo adobo sauce, accompanied by thick slices of charred pineapple and grilled radicchio (Photo 8). The four of us felt quite sated by our order even though sometimes it took creative dissection to ensure everyone got a satisfactory bite of everything. It worked regardless of the low bar. Came in here for just some drinks on a weekday evening! There was plenty of seating available but I've heard that it's more crowded on the weekends. My friend and I ordered a couple of cocktails, including their Paloma and Pineapple Express. Our drinks took a bit longer to come out than I expected, but they were well worth the wait! Both drinks had a well defined fruity taste, with the Pineapple Express having a strong vodka base. Luckily, the alcoholic taste was not too overpowering! We had great service from our waiters, as they came by our table quite often to make sure that we were enjoying our time there. Would love to try their other drinks and some of the dishes they're well know for in the future, including their Low Bar tacos and oysters! read more

I've always wanted to try this place because it's always packed on the weekends & I love oysters and beer so wtf not lol. Pricing was normal for Oakland & surrounding bars so wasn't too bad. I didn't like the fish taco, it was a bit plain but also I generally don't like fish tacos. The pink flag was delicious and definitely would go back to try more drinks during happy hour. We went to Low Bar on a whim when we couldn't find parking near our first two choices. Next time, I will go on purpose. The vibe is relaxed. The staff are efficient, and you can kick back with a drink and/or a nibble and relax. I had been planning to go there sometime to try the oysters. So, I did. If you visit, definitely do. They were fresh and delicate with a terrific mignonette made with cucumber and Fresno Chiles. It was both spicy and refreshing. My oysters were small, which I prefer, so I think they were west coast. Unlike some places, they don't tell you. I also didn't ask. My friend tried one of the holiday cocktails, the Coquito. It smelled like Christmas. I will have oysters again the next time I have a craving, and both of us plan to try the coconut milk bread pudding. It has passion fruit and kumquat, which sounds delicious. Recommended. read more

Tried this place for the first time yesterday and I think I will be back. They have a regular happy hour from 4-6pm and a late night happy hour from 9pm-close. I did not end up ordering on their happy hour, but next time I will check it out. I did scream at the 6/$22 oysters but they must be damn good! I chose to have a pickle back and the fish tacos. Can't go wrong with a pickle back, even if they're $15 each and the tacos were ok but I don't think I would get them again. I have a baby mouth and the jalapeño crema was too spicy for me and I think that's where the flavor was, because they switched it out for regular crema and it fell a little flat. Overall nice experience and cute space. I will come back for the cocktails and the service. Came here last night for dinner and drinks with gal pals, party of 3. We actually stumbled upon this because the Athletic was charging a cover for the night bc of the Dubs game. Our drinks: hotel tropicana (gin based), satsuma creamsicle (vodka based), pink flag (mezcal), 2 cali craft tropica wheats, 2 barebottle muir woods IPA. Beers were $9 each and the cocktails were $16. Our food order: 12 oysters on half shell ($40), crispy tofu ($14), fish tacos ($17, comes with 2 tacos), and low bar nachos ($14). Pros: - Surprisingly, sharing those small plates between 3 people I felt pretty satiated and not super hungry afterwards. - The satsuma creamsicle is VERY tasty (pretty unique and doesn't even really taste like vodka - I'm not usually a fan of vodka based cocktails but this one blew me away). - the beers were great too, and the limited small menu makes it really easy to order - didn't feel any decision fatigue and felt like we got to try a decent amount of the menu - We stayed for 3 hours to watch the Warriors game, and they were really nice and let us dilly-dally and didn't kick us out! - Really great service from Helen!! Checked out Low Bar for Cocktail week. We enjoyed their featured cocktail with pumpkin flavors and I also ordered the Boulavardier (citrusy like a boozy lemonade) both were enjoyable. The food was the star for me, we ordered the vegan tostada, super flavorful Broccoli & turnip with pomegranate seeds --wow! We gobbled that up very quickly. We also ordered fries and their wings (Fresno chilies sprinkled on top, so be careful if you can't handle the heat), all great options and quickly filled us up. The service was 10/10! My friend and I hit low bar at 5:30pm Friday night before a comedy show at the Paramount. We got NA cocktails to start, The Mellow Deadbeat and the Pina con Nada. Both were fruitarific and well balanced. We ordered the little gem salad (fresh and delicious with vegan cheese crisps and crunchy pickled onions), bacon and scallop tostada, the fries (like elevated McDonald's fries), and the salt and pepper chicken wings (and drumsticks!). There were a plentiful amount of these dishes for the two of us. The tostadas come in twos. The stand out was the fried chicken dish. The cilantro ranch sauce for dipping took it up at least two notches. They had an expertly seasoned crispy batter. I'm still thinking about those chicken wings the day after like a good first date kiss or something and thus needed to write this review so you can experience them, too. Anyway, on to the service. The people helping us were great - attentive, friendly, and helpful. We were given many choices of where to sit when we entered. 5 stars for drinks, 2 stars for food. Their cocktails are tasty, not overly sweet, and a wonderful blend of complex flavors. Their food...isn't what it used to be back when they partnered with Chisme Cantina. The salad dressing was quite flavorless, as was the fried tofu (even though we got the latter wet and spicy). The garnishes (pickled onions, pepitas, etc) on the salad helped quite a bit, as did adding salt. The nachos were what I'd call elevated Taco Bell nachos. The hush puppies were solid though. Stumbled onto this neighborhood bar as after a little bar hopping one lazy Sunday afternoon, we wanted a light bite. Have walked past this place several times before and always noticed their bold signage outside. I always thought it was more of diner/restaurant, but it is more of a hipster bar that serves food. I think there may have been an ownership change like within the last few years, so what we got, may not what a reviewer got say 2+ years ago. Evening hours the place is dark. Very dim lighting and since we came in October the place had the Halloween spirit on blast. Looked like a haunted dive bar, which I can dig. Maybe 10 tables and people were definitely eating so it seemed to have some food cred. Almanac Kolsch on draft ($11/4*) This seems to be my go-to for a lighter beer these days. I see it everywhere so it is starting to become very familiar to me. This on tap, which is a change from the many cans I do receive. Solid local brew. Tito's and OJ ($12.75/4*) Solid screwdriver as they use a fresh OJ or a brand that really taste fresh. Not the thick concentrate type of juice. And they use cool glassware, not your typical generic type of glassware. Beef Adobo Pupusa ($13/3.5*) When I saw this fusion combo of Filipino and El Salvadoran, I had to go there. Upon arrival the pupusa looked great, nice thick masa cake with nice browned hues from the griddling. Maybe a tad oily looking but I don't mind greasy toritllas/masa, it just taste good. There were a good glob of hispanic cheese in the center that pulled nice and smooth. But the beef adobo, even though I could sense the beef, I really didn't taste the 'adobo' vibe, just seemed like braised beef to me. So kind of a letdown. And usually when I eat pupusas there is always a tart cabbage slaw that is there for garnishing that is actually half the equation for me. Warm rich pupusas with a cool and crisp tart slaw and a tomato-y thin salsa. Here it was just pupusa, a couple of thin sauces, and some overly tart pickled cucumber slices. Now one sauce was a vinegar based one, so it helped cut the grease factor a bit, but this definitely could use that vegetative crunch break to help brighten up the dish. Grilled Shrimp Tostada ($14.50/3.5*) When I saw the word 'grilled' on the menu I thought this was going to be a slightly warm tostada, at least the shrimp part. Nope even the shrimp was chilled/cold. But this had smallish chilled shrimps on top of a super crisp tortilla with bean puree. Then topped with pumpkin seed macha salsa which was awesome but also with something really sweet and fruity which threw me off. Upon looking at the menu later I saw 'yuzu jelly' and that had to been it. Not bad, just don't expect a sweetness that upfront when I'm eating something garlic-y and seafood-y. And again this could have used some vegetable garnish like lettuce or cilantro, something fresh to offset the rich oily flavors that were literally dripping off the tostada. The airy dill fronds just didn't make enough of a refreshing contrast. A little pricey too for the amount, like we got 1 pupusa and 1 tostada cut in half, so basically an appetizer outing with a couple of drinks set me back $60+ after tax n tip. They do have better pricing during happy hour but we missed it by a couple of hours. May have rounded up if we hit that happy hour, but we didn't so sticking with a mid 3 for value and perception. read more

Service was kind of slow; one employee working as the hostess/waitress/bartender. We ended up not even getting dessert because the service was too slow. Nothing to "ooooh-and-ahhhh" about in terms of location or ambiance. We also happened to be there when there was an unruly customer and the same employee had to deal with that, too! Food has been up and down over the past three years, never bad but not consistent, cocktails have always been on point. Stumbled in here on a quiet Monday night in the new year after an evening of Banya. The occassion called for a celebration: drinks and food. And at 9 pm in Oakland, that can sometimes be tough. But we walked into the bar, filled with dates, solo customers reading at the bar top, and a back room of blissful diners. Hoping the kitchen wasn't closed yet, at nearly 9:30, we were told we had time to order. We rushed in more food than we really needed. But each of us picked what sounded most delicious to us. I ordered a cocktail with mezcal that was a bit too smoky for my liking. But that toddy, with fermented pineapple...DELICIOUS. The food was giant portions for tapas. I INHALED the salad. It was the yummiest thing I'd eaten in months. Like clearly, there is a chef preparing food here. The wings were spicy, perfectly fried, and tasty. I don't know if the fritters were plated with hummus, but...it was ABSOLUTELY savory and yummy. And the entire spread was $90. By Oakland fares (with cocktails), I think we did good. As a couple living on aspirations, it was a splurge. But I'd do it again. And I'd make my way through the cocktails as I returned. Ohhhhh....and while leaving, we found a photobooth. Service was so bad I had to come leave a review. The server forgot to put in like half of the food we ordered. When the final person in our party arrived and placed his order, his food came out immediately after we'd already been waiting 30 min for the first round of food. When we asked about it, he brushed us off... then came back 10 min later with 5 pieces of oysters, even though we ordered the 12 pieces. He denied that and said we only ordered the 6 pieces (so the plate was missing an oyster regardless). I asked about the rest of the food we ordered and then he claimed we never placed the order. By that time the kitchen had closed so we just got our check and left hungry. Server also never came and gave tables a heads up that the kitchen was closing. Any front of house person with common sense would recognize that no three top would only order 6 oysters to split between three people... Its not a big deal when you forget to put in parts of the order but to deny that you messed up and pretend we didnt order as much as we did is crazy. Receipt had the wrong items too! We all live and work in oakland and this experience was bad enough that we'll be telling everyone we know in the area not to go lol. it was almost comedic how terrible that experience was. read more

Someone referred us to Low Bar on a local FB page...so glad he did! We went there for an early dinner before a concert at the Fox a couple weeks ago. Loved it and went back last weekend with our 28-year old niece. The food AND service were great! We ordered several different things and shared. Got a second order of a couple things! Low Bar has a casual local hangout kind of feel with a good vibe. Love the Photo Booth! The first time we took BART and walked; last weekend we parked in the public lot across the street. The lot can be reasonable ($5?); however, if there's a 'special event' at the Paramount, the fee is a flat $20. We are older than what appeared to be their usual demographic (we're in our early 60's); nevertheless, we felt comfortable and had a great time! Looking forward to going back! read more

I stopped by Low Bar this past week to check out their "A Burger" as part of Oakland Burger Tour. The burger is a double smash burger with pickles, American cheese, salsa verde, kewpie mayo, and fried onions, all on a brioche bun with a side of fries. The burger itself was well-seasoned and really juicy -- and because of that, quite messy to eat; definitely a two-napkin kind of a burger. The fries here were shockingly good, especially if you upgrade them to garlic fries. After demolishing my owner burger and fries, I couldn't help but steal a few more fries off my wife's plate. Cocktails here were fine, but nothing too special . I ordered the Oaxacan Old Fashioned and it was a lot less spirit forward than I would have liked. Low Bar is probably not the first bar I'd choose to visit if I'm in Downtown Oakland but if you're around the area and are interested in participating in Oakland's first ever Burger Tour, definitely stop by to try out the burger. read more

I was excited to try lowbar as it's just the down the street from where I live and always seems so lively. Sadly our visit was very disappointing and we will not be back. It's a loud vibrant atmosphere with good drinks, that's about all it has going. The oysters were good too. However we ordered the hamachi crudo as well and I only took one bite. It had zero acid or salt, everyone in the industry knows you salt something savory right after you fry it and the tostada was like a cardboard tortilla. They used some sort of sweet sauce on it so it literally tasted like a candied fish dish, it was disgusting. Their menu is also very confused, mix of southern, latin and Asian dishes?? All of these cuisines are known for having rich flavors and the crudo missed the mark by far. Fair warning, do not order the crudo or expect anything better than you would get at a dive bar or food truck. My suggestion, go down the block to lovely's for a an incredible burger and then stop at lowbar for a cocktail if you have no other options. Ps. Nice bar with good seating and quick service. The bartenders were efficient and made good drinks. Sitat the bar for a more engaging experience. They have tables and high tops as well. Drinks were good and there are also decent food options available(did not try). Parking was street only and easily available. The only downside was that the lighting was a little too bright for a late night bar. read more

I came here for my birthday dinner and ended up here because it was a late Sunday night and nothing else was really open besides bars. I'm so glad we ended up here because the food and drinks are so delicious. The menu had a lot of Salvadorian and Filipino fusion which I typically don't like, but this is the first time that I was impressed with this type of menu. Nice ambiance and great selection, but the michelada was probably the worse I've had and one of the churros was undercooked. However, the rest were very yummy and fluffy. The chocolate sauce was mezcal which we didn't like. Wish it came with ice cream instead. I ordered the egg since it was raved about in other reviews. It was unique, like chorizo on the outside, and perfectly cooked. Whatever the sauce that came with it def made it better. I def would come here to try their brunch next time and for a happy hour. The space has indoor and outdoor seating and it felt chill and cool. The service was friendly and helpful. I tried three cocktails - and they were all delicious, balanced, and as described. There was a coffee cocktail that was a spin on an espresso martini and I could definitely have multiples of it cause it was so good. The beet cocktail was lightly sweet but not too "beet-y" - it had a nice flavor with soft acids. I had the burger and the sauce/texture really carried it. It was well cooked and assembled. Carnitas sandwich was also very tender and seasoned. Cocktails were all great and well crafted. No complaints there. Good drink selection as well. Place is well decorated and clean. Despite being a Latin bar, there was barely any Latin music playing. The only complaint was that the service was very sub-par. The staff was all very kind, but my group had to wait extremely long for everything. Birria Fries are delicious, the cocktails are crafted beautifully, and the service is to notch. Came in on a Tuesday night during a little vendors market in their back room, so this place was poppin'! We waited for 10ish minutes to sit, which was quick given how packed it was.
