When I walked in, I felt a little out of place wearing stilettos in a bar that's covered in, well, sand! That's on me for not connecting the dots there, ha. This was the best beach in Oakland! Anytime you need to get away, the Sand Bar is the destination. I came in and was greeted by the DJ playing reggae and instantly noticed the sand. Most of the floors are covered in sand like your on the beach. We were greeted by the bartenders who gave up great recommendations. They dont have a kitchen but you can order food to their location. I don't think Frankie Avalon and Annette Funicello drank alcohol in their beach movies probably because they would've been carded and turned away for pretending to be teenaged surfers. But hey, this ain't Malibu. It's Oakland, Uptown on Broadway, probably the last place where you'd hear "Surf's Up!" But here it is replete with sand scattered on the floor and a casual decor along the lines of the "Gilligan's Isle" set. We did go tropical with our first round even though parasols weren't included. Great spot in uptown. The east bay has a fair share of tropical bars. This one's distinct because they really lean into the beach thing and the ground is actually sand! The indoors is very beachy and they have outdoor seating as well. The outdoor area is a typical parklet setup with a few converted parking spaces and some tables and chairs. Wish they would fix the weird slope. My friend put his drink on the table and it slid right off, so be careful. The drinks are good and pack a punch. The yay breeze tasted vaguely like mulled wine to me. I'm told the gorilla milk is pretty sweet and very strong. In addition to the specialty drinks they have beer and a full bar. Bartender was friendly enough. Didn't do a great job answering menu questions, but did help my friend out when he spilled his drink. All in all, a great addition to the uptown bar scene. Sand bar definitely lives up to its beach theme! First step into the unique you'll find sand, and even beach-themed down to the toilet bowl. Bartender was very friendly and the overall chill vibe made it easy to chat with friends. I think the place would benefit from more seating options good for pairs to larger groups, but there were lots of stools at the bar. There's also outdoor seating available. This is a pretty decent spot and I'd recommend coming by while it's still early in the evening. We walked in around 9pm on a Friday night and it wasn't crowded until about 10pm. Also the bathroom had 3 stalls, 2 sinks outside, and it was very clean. Overall good experience! Just awkward seating arrangements. read more

To be honest, the gimmick of their being sand on the floor is more like that the floor has very little sand with a rough, nail-file texture. That being said, you probably wouldn't want that much sand on the floor unless you came prepared with sandals or flip-flops. Regardless, the sand bar is pretty nice with beach-themed decorative fixtures around that really completes the theme of the place. Cool new TIki bar in Uptown with some fun vibes. They have a thin layer of sand on the ground that I assume gives the bar it's name. It's just a thin layer but that's fine by me because I unironically agree with Anakin Skywalker that sand is course, rough, and gets everywhere. The whole ambiance of the bar seems to be "chill" and aimed to make you feel like you're at a beach. There's beach paraphernalia all over the walls, with my favorite being a crab cage just hanging there. There's some chairs here and there, and you just pick where you want to sit. The drink menu was somewhat limited and skewed towards sweet. They take pride in their Gorilla Milk, a banana almond slushie with milk liquer, that my friend got and was pretty good. Definitely a fun drink that hits you strong. I got one of their special drinks, the Black Mamba, that was a modified old fashioned. It was good but a little sweet. It was really low key with plenty of room to stand. There are booths and seats for you to sit too, including the bar. But honestly, the floor has sand on it and when your feeling yourself, the sand feels really good. They also have outdoor seating too. Great for those warm summer nights. They have some tiki ish drinks, but the bartenders all know their drinks really well and can make you anything they can to their beast capabilities.
