3.13 - Update: I appreciate Kindred reaching out to address my previous review. They apologized for their off night and invited me back. Stephen, the GM, shared they were updating the menu and that the number of servers working is based on their reservations, which makes complete sense. Given today's climate, this staffing model is entirely understandable. I haven't had the chance yet to go back, but I plan to soon. I'm a regular at Oak Grove Market (also owned by Rick with a couple of partners), and seeing him today reminded me of their commitment to quality. I'm impressed by their effort to make it right, truly going above & beyond. Definitely give them a try! I'll update my food star rating when I get back, but don't wait for my review. 2.27 - Really disappointed in Kindred. The ambiance is about the only thing it had going. The dinner menu was limited to pork, expensive steak options one fish dish and the alternative, vegetarian plate that was too salty. File this under "Places you go when you want everything to go right." Kindred is excellent. Ask for Sleighton (sp?). She makes everything perfect. She knows the menu backwards and forwards, makes good recommendations and puts real love into her work. Kindred is what happens when the owners of Oak Grove Market do a sit-down restaurant. I've been to Kindred a handful of times now for lunch, and I've never been disappointed in anything I've ordered, whether it's a steak sandwich, the pimiento cheese appetizer, some roasted oysters, or the Sausage Gravy on a Biscuit with a fried Chicken Breast (see the terrible pic I uploaded). The house chips with some Chimichurri ranch are good and the fries are simply outstanding. Kindred is also simply comfortable. Every table is conducive to good conversations. And every time I've gone, I've never wanted for anything. My glass is always full. I will eventually make it to Kindred for dinner. Holler if you're coming with. read more

This restaurant is a true gem! I went with a friend for dinner. The service was amazing. The owner even came over to our table and talk to us for a little while. He also suggested some items. He was very hands-on and I enjoyed that. We started off with appetizers. We shared the sticky ribs. Which were absolutely amazing! We also shared the shrimp and grits. Those were really good as well. The grits have corn in them which is different but had a good taste. And we got the garlic crab claws. The crab claws were really good to. Make sure you take that bread and dip it in that sauce... Amazing. Four entrées my friend got the Kindred burger. She is lactose intolerant so she got it without the cheese. It was a huge burger and she even had some left over. I got the crispy chicken. Which was cooked perfectly. I was even able to switch out the sauté spinach that it comes with and get asparagus at no extra charge. What can I say.... This place is a MUST ! We decided to go for our anniversary and I am so glad we did. From the minute we walked in the door u til the minute we walked out, everything was too notch! Let's talk about decor- it's intimate, but casual at the same time. The art work is really fun and so is the music. There are tables indoors as well as a bar. They also have a few tables outside as well. Ok- drinks- the back of the menu has signature cocktails, wines, beers, and bubbles. My pollinator drink had tequila and berry something and peppercorn. We also had a paloma which was super delish too. FOOD!! The menu offers share plates, steaks, and non-steak entrees. We went with 3 share plates to start- sticky ribs, beet terrine, and crab in a curry broth. I dreamt about all of it all night. The beet terrine is beautifully layered red and golden beets with whipped goat cheese. Do I need to say more??? All we so good! The steak menu is so creative. You have the choice of a Ribeye, filet, or hanger. Then you choose your seasoning. Everything from classic salt pepper and homemade steak sauce to a chimmichurri and pickled onion topping. Then you choose your side. Matt went with the classic ribeye(MR) and the grits. It did not disappoint! I actually had the shareable veggie tacos because I was already full, but it was so good! For dessert we had a coconut tree leche and a homemade chocolate cookie with coffee ice cream. We will definitely be back! I don't plan to bring the kids though anytime soon. read more

What we love: The food. Chef is excellent. The Pimento Cheese appetizer is a must. Tacos Vampiros. Another must. Braised Chicken Thighs. Great menu for both meat eaters (Steaks) and plant-based people. Excellent cocktails from the bar. Great table service from wait and bar staff. What we don't like: Some of the seating doesn't fit a 50 dollar steak. Tables that are a tight squeeze. Lights shining in eyes. And the hostess, she doesn't appreciate complaints or requests to move. Especially on a busy night. I also wonder if they overbook. We had 745 reservations Friday, didn't sit down until 815, and had to settle for a tight booth near the bright lights from the parking lot. And it was a tight squeeze for two of us. We watched much smaller people get roomier tables despite our requests. Kudos to the Chef who heard me complain at 845 and rushed out a plate of food. This is in a great location for people who live nearby. But after two tries with same issues, my other half does not want to go back. read more

You know that feeling when you've been away for ages, and you finally get home and it feels awesome - totally familiar, but better? That's what coming to the reinvented space in Oak Grove felt like, the first time we dined at the new Kindred after a years-long love affair with its previous incarnation, Kitchen Six. K6 was our go-to neighborhood spot before the pandemic (and during - more on that in a moment) and my favorite thing was the menu layout. Six items in each section, and six sections on the menu - rotating constantly, rolling in seasonal produce and keeping only one or two dishes on the menu constant (pimento cheese, steak and pot de crème, I see you). Kindred takes that and one-ups itself with the small but mighty entree list, a steak selection oozing with paint-by-numbers simplicity (+$3 blue cheese and bacon, +$6 Spanish shrimp, yes please) and a fabulous stack of shareable apps (octopus romesco and beet terrine, you are welcome at my table any day). Not to be outdone, Kindred's cocktails and wine list also have a same-but-better vibe going on. Both red and white sections boast a thoughtful number of everyday-priced wines, so you don't have to worry about spending "fancy dinner" money here if you don't want to break the bank on a Tuesday. Don't miss the few knockout bottles, though - I'm still looking for an occasion to order the Silver Oak cab - and you have to try the fancy fizz at least once. Cocktails are creative but classic, like the gin fizz with a twist (which, in Kindred's case, is blackberry and thyme; tastes like fall in a glass). The people? All the way through 2020's trying times, the K6 team handled pick-up orders with a smile, even figuring out how to hand off perfectly mixed cocktails in travel-friendly (and cute as heck) packaging. At the same time, they collected donations and served hundreds of meals to front line heroes every week. So it's no surprise that, now they're back and better than ever, the service is just right, every time. From the inimitable Sherri, maitre d' of our dreams, to the subtlety professional but friendly team, something good is going on at Kindred. This was our first time going to Kindred. Saw the menu and was looking for a steak and this seemed like a new, good choice. The atmosphere is small and intimate, but inviting. I split a ceaser wedge and the crab claws with my wife. The ceaser wedge was fine. I think there is no need to grill the lettuce, but ok. The crab claws were the star! They were spicy, they had a great sauce that came with bread to dip and there were plenty to share. Definitely recommend those. The steaks on the other hand...I was sold on the special, a 28 day dry-aged bone in ribeye. Served classic with only salt n pepper. The cook was a perfect medium rare. The flavor though? There was none. There was no flavor from the "dry age", and there wasn't even enough salt. I had to get salt from the server. My wife got the filet with the mushroom topping. Again the cook was perfect, but the flavor was absent. The service was great, Steven was fun and well versed on the menu. My final verdict though is I spent far too much money on an average dinner. Either spend a little more for fine dining, or slum it at a steak chain read more

My wife and I were excited to see what the people at Oak Grove Market would do with Kindred. The interior wasn't too different than Kitchen Six other than some more colour, murals, and a shift from small couple booths to a longer bench against the wall with tables and chairs on the other side. It's clear they were trying to increase capacity. The two-top tables were packed so close together that they actually had to pull the table out in order for my wife to get in to the bench side. Later a couple was seated at the table next to us and it felt almost like we were at the same table! Little sense of privacy. The cocktail menu has more bright or bubbly cocktails. Nothing too impressive. I much preferred Kitchen Six's creativity. We each ordered a filet cooked medium, though mine was more like medium well. The steak was quite good and I got mine "Woodsman style" with smoked mushrooms on top. Yum! The Kin Salad on the side wasn't really much to write home about, though the side of cooked spinach was fine. I'd return again to try other items on the menu. The service was a little slower than I expected but we weren't in a rush. The server also didn't seem as attentive as expected either, but this was their second day in operation. It's nice to have a neighbourhood place like this so I have hopes that they will tweak and improve, hopefully seasonally changing the menu and being more creative with cocktails. read more

Second visit today, for dinner.... Since moving back to ATL last summer, I have wanted to find a "favorite " neighborhood place....and, had really hoped that Kindred would be the one. I made a res online for "early" - old people early, early bird early. (I am retired so, I can eat early IF I want. ) A couple of hiccups with our seating...ugh. On to cocktails - hiccups be damned! Not so fast - an issue with locating an ingredient for on of our cocktails....sad trombone. Moving on to food - we both ordered filets - a little hiccup with the chef over cooking temps caused my filet to be redone. Much better second time....just a suggestion to Kindred : please put # of ounces, as is common in steakhouse menus. The filets were no more than 6 oz each which was a disappointment. My dining partner loved the sautéed spinach . Had the crème brûlée for dessert - very good. Terrible service. It took 70 minutes to get our lunch--in an almost empty restaurant! And the sandwiches were only of average quality (steak sandwich and chicken melt). No warning about a long wait time--in fact, no contact from a server until he brought the food. Unless you just enjoy sitting and waiting for so-so food, I'd skip Kindred entirely. There are most definitely better restaurants with better, less expensive food and more attentive service nearby. read more

Drinks were amazing and I would come back just for a happy hour to enjoy those. Apps are overpriced. Lamb lollipops under-seasoned and octopus flavorless and extra chewy. We were told it's the best octopus in the city...not sure who they polled. Steak well cooked and that's about it. Our waiter was lit and all our food arrived at once which is a huge pet peeve especially for the price you pay for apps. My husband and I were very excited to try it but honestly the food at kitchen six was better and priced more reasonable for what you received.
