I've been here twice now, and I have loved it both times. I've been able to get a resy week-of for weekend nights both times I've been, which is so nice. The service has been great, and the waitstaff is super knowledgeable about their drinks and food. It's such a cool vibe inside, but it is very dark. It's kinda hard to see the menu - I wish they put small handheld flashlights on the tables. Multiple tables around us were using iPhone flashlights to see the menu which were so bright. The food is always incredible, and I'm partial to their seafood options. I've had both the snapper and the trout, and they were exceptional. Their cocktail menu is 10/10. My husband and I celebrated our wedding anniversary here over the past week and we were both pleasantly surprised with the food, service and ambiance of the restaurant! We snagged an early dinner reservation at 5:15 pm and surprisingly, people were already dining and they just got busier as time went on. We were greeted right away by our wonderful server (forgot her name though) and she asked if it was our first time there and if we were celebrating something. We answered yes to both and they actually brought us complimentary champagne, a sparkling non-alcoholic cider for me because I ordered a zero proof drink. Kimball House is known for their amazing bar program, so my husband ordered a Kimball House served with a side of olives and lemon twist on ice, like what?! I ordered a ginger & honey lime fizz to enjoy. For starters, we also enjoyed Hawaiian rolls, green salad and some oysters for my husband. The rolls and salad came out super fast, but there was quite a wait for our drinks and oysters that I didn't think they were going to come out. The rolls are a must-get here - they're huge and the strawberry preserve it was served with was delicious! The salad was actually split in half, which was a super nice touch and was plenty of serving between two people. We loved the dressing - it was nice and fresh. For our entree, I ordered a trout and my husband ordered the duck breast. I was a bit underwhelmed when I saw my plate because I was thinking it would be a plate full of grits, but what was served was the perfect amount because it was quite heavy. The trout by itself was too salty for my taste, but was best eaten with a bite of collards and grits. My husband enjoyed his meal, but wished the duck was cooked a bit more. For dessert, we both enjoyed a Paris Brest. Our server actually put it in twice so we each got one when she meant to only punch in one, but she ended up taking one off from our bill. I was quite shocked that our whole dinner was only around $190, not including tip, which I thought was quite reasonable. Our reservation was at 5:00 and they don't open the doors until right at 5:00. We went for our anniversary and at least five of the staff wished us a happy anniversary, that was nice. We started with the Hawaiian roll and it's delicious! warm, fluffy and the sprinkle is salt on top is perfect. I could've eaten three by myself! But we only got one and split it (they're huge). We also had the wood-fired oysters. They're fully cooked and the garlic butter sauce is perfect. We chose non-alcoholic drinks, also good. I had the ricotta ravioli and the sauce was amazing! He had the filet mignon, which was also delicious and cooked perfectly. As a gift, they gave us each a glass of non-alcoholic champagne on the house! We went to Kimball House for a birthday celebration and were looking forward to our meal because we had heard so many good things about this place. We started with zero proof cocktails, Hawaiian rolls, some cocktail shrimp and oysters. Those all came out fast and were delicious. Unfortunately, the same can't be said about the rest of our meal. We had a 6 pm reservation and at 8:45, had still not received our entrees. We had been told the kitchen made a mistake at 7:45 and that our meal would right up. We were also told that management would come speak with us. We were not checked on during this long wait until we asked for our check at 8:45. At this point our food appeared, but was not hot and was under seasoned. The fish skin was rubbery and we still had to wait several minutes for a side. The manager comped our entrees for the wait, which we appreciated. But for a restaurant of this caliber, we hoped they'd have been more apologetic and maybe thrown in a complimentary dessert or side. We were impressed by the first half our meal, but after nearly 3 hours, they lost us. It was even more disappointing that it was a birthday celebration and the experience was so bad. read more

As someone who isn't an oyster novice. This review won't hold much weight, but I can say my dining experience at Kimball House was great and it lives up to the hype. Me and my friend ordered a variety of Oysters with the best one in my opinion being the Glacier Point. They tasted amazing! Although I'm not an oyster novice I am however an expert on Negronis, and The Green Apple Negroni is one of the best I've ever had. It's the perfect combination of bitter and sweet. Overall an "okay" experience. I went with a group and the ambiance was great, and the cocktails were fantastic, definitely a highlight of the night. The food, however, left our group a little underwhelmed. With most plates priced between $40 to $80, we expected a bit more flavor and substance. It was not bad, just not quite at the level the pricing suggests and also the wait to get your food. Service was very attentive, almost a little too attentive at times, and we eventually had to ask for a few minutes so our group could catch up and chat. We stopped by Kimball House late in the evening spontaneously for the bar, and I really enjoyed the experience. We explained we were here for the bar at the host stand, but since we came at a later time and there were open tables they offered to seat us at a table! That was very sweet and thoughtful of them, and I definitely preferred sitting at the table than on the high top chairs at the bar. I ordered 2 drinks because I wanted something on the sweeter side. Our server recommended me a drink, it was very interesting with a green color and little darker drops on top, and had an apple flavor. It was good, but very strong in alcohol flavor for me. I also tried the Afternoon Delight hoping it would be sweeter, and it was also very good but still quite strong for me. I do recommend coming here if you like stronger drink flavors to sip on, it just wasn't a good match for me and my sweet tooth. Both drinks were very decorated very nice, and the Afternoon Delight came with a little flower which was cute. We did an assortment of 16 oysters which they let out in order so you know which ones you are enjoying. My wife likes but doesn't love oysters and she ate half of them which is saying something about the quality and freshness of the oyster. Cocktails here are truly unmatched - naturally we started with two that were recommended by our awesome server. We started with some drinks. I got the kiwi gimlet and my husband got a glass of wine. Their cocktail menu was awesome. Lots of interesting drinks. We got a few dishes to split. We started with the Hawaiian rolls. One order only comes with 1 roll. They are large but so good! We got 2 but honestly could have split 1 with all the other food we got. We also got the pommes macaire. They were sort of like potato and cheese logs with a chipotle Mayo dipping sauce - incredible! We got the tomato tart as well. Probably my least favorite thing but still good. And for our main entree we got the ribeye. The steak was amazing. So tender and flavorful and cooked just right. I loved that it came with a few veggies as well. The service was decent. Not overly nice, but nice enough. It's a pricey meal which is why I'd say save it for a special occasion or when you are just feeling fancy. They don't do anything for your birthday which is kind of a bummer. I came here on a date and it was nice! I'm pretty familiar with Kimball House, as I'm a part of an oyster community, but this was my first time visiting. I was pleasantly surprised to see that they had West Coast oysters, which is veryyyy rare in the city of Atlanta. We sat at the bar for dinner (amazing and lovely bartender served us) and from what I remember the food was pretty good, but of course I came for the oysters, so that was the star of my show. I wish they still did happy hour, but will be back either way for the west coast oysters and the absolutely perfect shuck (definitely one of the best shucks Ive seen) and presentation (cute tincture bottle). Kimball house is an upscale dining establishment in downtown Decatur. My wife and I enjoyed a nice dinner here where we tried the following items: cocktails - the Candler park and the DryAlaska, a sampling of a few oysters from the North Atlantic, Gulf, and West coast, the two mains - the bouillabaisse and the scallops, and a vanilla crème Brûlée dessert. This all ran about $140, which did not surprise us given the location and menu items. The scallions were delicious, but given the portions and quality, I'm not sure the price really warranted the cost. The scallops were not particularly big and with just three of them and accompanying sauce (very savory and delicious), smoked cauliflower (different but in a pleasant way), and collards, I'd have rather spent $34 on the pork loin. The bouillabaisse was overall disappointing. It's basically a pricey tomato soup with a nice variety of seafood but I didn't find it terribly memorable and it didn't come out warm enough (especially on a very cold night). We enjoyed the oysters as I always do but I can't say that I could notice much of a difference between the different types but that might just be more my lack of refined oyster palette. The Candler park old fashioned like cocktail was delicious and I'd highly recommend it. The Alaska wasn't for me (very dry as I suppose the name suggests and slightly sour), but my wife liked it ok. The crème brûlée dessert though was a highlight and we spooned out every last bit. The service was good and our waiter was very pleasant. One of the owners even brought out our main dishes. I'd come back on a special occasion to try some of the other dishes here. read more

I was so incredibly disappointed by the Kimball House. It was a miss for me on so many levels. Let's me say the food was good, but there were so many other underwhelming parts of our dinner that it really just ruined the meal. We arrived a few minutes early for our reservation and figured we would grab a drink at the bar - Nope... not allowed. We said we don't need to sit, we will just order and stand... nope can't order a drink at the bar. What??? Why on earth would a restaurant not allow you to grab a predinner drink at the bar? They advised us to go across the street to a grocery story for a can of wine. We sat at our reservation time (so heads up don't be early), and ordered a dirty kettle one martini. They don't have kettle one... in fact after the server left for 15 Minutes to check and see if they had kettle one, she came back to report they only have one type of vodka. ONE TYPE OF VODKA?? It's a brand I've never heard of. There is a WHOLE bar. How is that even possible? Fine, we will try the one vodka you sell. The martini was by far the worst one I've ever had. I don't know if it was the type or vermouth or the one vodka they sell, but not only was it terrible, it also took 35 minutes to arrive to our table. This is not an exaggeration, it was 35 minutes to get our first drinks (our reservation was at 830pm we did not get our cocktails until after 9pm) We ordered the caviar service, rolls, oysters and the Medlins, food was good but not super special. Maybe I was just underwhelmed already... but I just wasn't that impressed. The oyster menu was not clearly understood and our server was missing literally the entire night, so forget asking questions. The caviar was served with Bellinis and mini toasts, however the toasts were soft and chewy. The caviar would have been nice to have with a crunch. My friend asked if she could order a vodka pineapple, to which our server said they do not have pineapple juice. But then advised us to order a drink on the menu... with pineapple juice in it... So... there is pineapple? She was a good sport and agreed to the drink recommended. It was not good. Our server never returned at a certain point and someone else stepped in. Maybe she was sick? I don't know, but she was rough. We were hopeful he was better but he was curt, at best. At 9:57 we got a 3 minute warning the kitchen was closing, and our end of dinner was rushed. Mind you, the service was incredibly slow, this was not our pace. We decided I guess we were done and got the check. I think I've left less than 20% tip maybe one time in my life before this, and this was the second. The 15% we did leave was not warranted but atlas, as a former restaurant employee for many years, even the crappiest of service I still can't stiff someone. The no waiting area, you can't order a drink at my bar, crappy service, gross cocktails, the rushed end of the night... these are basics that Kimball house could not deliver on. This is such a chic spot with many seafood options set in a remodeled older house in Decatur. Very upscale, gourmet options and the price tag that fits it. They have lots of oyster options (raw, grilled, etc), beef tartare which was raved about but we didn't get, snapper tartare (essentially snapper sushi with yummy citrus? Sauce and micro green/kumquat citrus topping), amongst other yummy starters. The cocktails are delish! My partner got the whiskey smash which springy didn't taste like whiskey but instead more of a guava-tasting tropical drink (yummy)! We got the grilled oysters and snapper tartare for apps and enjoyed both of them. Next time, I'd want to try the beef tartare but the grilled oysters were excellent. I got the Mezzaluna (mushroom half moon ravioli) -- surrounded with many, different maroons and a wine-tasting mushroom sauce. Definitely get only if you love mushrooms, because there are many! It was yummy but id probably choose the Snapper entree item in the future. The snapper entree was perfectly cooked and tender, very well seasoned with melt in your mouth creamy risotto -- excellent. Parking is on the street, a very small lot (full), or a parking garage which you must pay ahead for. My party enjoyed everything we ordered especially the entrees, they were all excellent and difficult to pick a favorite between the tenderloin, duck and snapper. The grilled oysters were a little different than the typical Parmesan garlic but they were amazing as well. I think the weakest dish for me was the fried shrimp. This was my first time at Kimball House, and I have nothing but good things to say about it. I had heard they had good oysters, and I went with my friend who loves oysters (I also love oysters.) We enjoyed an excellent dinner. We had four food items to share, 1 dessert to share, and then we each got 2 of our own drinks. For food we got the caviar and middlins, pork belly lettuce wraps, ceviche, and oysters. For the caviar and middlins, this was my first time trying caviar. I was eager to try it out, and honestly it wasn't too bad. It wasn't as fishy as I thought it was going to be. Had kind of a nice savory/salty sort of taste to it. It was served over what seemed to be kind of toasted grits with an egg yolk. The pairing of all the flavor and texture was unlike anything I've ever tasted or even seen before. It was quite good. The pork belly lettuce wraps were excellent. The pork belly had that Asian KBBQ taste due to the pork being marinated in some kimchi. Each bite was quite satisfying. The ceviche was good, but nothing too out of the ordinary. It was served with some house-made chips. The ceviche was good, but it tasted like your regular ceviche that you would have anywhere else. The oysters were EXCELLENT. We got 7 different types. My friend picked 4 and then we had the server recommend 3 other ones. We enjoyed every single one of them. They were fresh and shucked perfectly. These were definitely some of the best oysters I have ever had. All the food was crafted perfectly and tasted so good. For my drinks, I got the Winter Daisy and the Green Apple Daiquiri. I preferred the Winter Daisy as it didn't taste so strong like the daiquiri did. The Winter Daisy had a nice balance of flavor where I could taste the liquor but not be completely blind-sided by it. For dessert, we got the Vanilla Crème Brûlée. They had a few desserts to choose from, but we wanted to pick something we knew we were going to like. The Crème Brûlée was SO GOOD. The shell was perfectly crisp and the inside was so nice and creamy and warm. I can almost still taste it right now. Kimball House is an excellent place to go to for dinner. The vibe inside is very speakeasy meets industrial vibe. The bar is exquisite. Our server was also very knowledgeable about the menu and made excellent suggestions for us. I finally made it to the Kimball House y'all! And it gave exactly what it was supposed to give. Listen y'all, I've been trying to get to this establishment for months but I promise you it felt like years. First of all, they recommend reservations, which we had none but thank the hostess heavens, there were 2 seats at the bar (cue the angels singing ). This place was poppin' with great energy yall. I mean it was definitely a vibe. Calvin (my apologies if misspelled) was the first mixologist on the scene. He provided us with water and a smile. I love it here already. He asked if we had dined with the Kimball House before and when I told him we had not, he welcomed us and asked if we would like to start with a cocktail. I let know I was a tequila drinker and that I love a good margarita but would like his recommendation. He was happy to oblige. One of his recommendations was the watermelon spritz......he had me at "watermelon". The hubs ordered the Allagash (beer). I absolutely loved the Watermelon Spritz. This establishment has some outstanding unique service and y'all know how I feel about service. It's unique because you don't have one server assisting you like in a usual dining structure. It was quite different but great. Each server that helped us was very helpful and although it was a different server at varying times, it's was like they knew what the last server had said before them. It was wild and fascinating at the same time. Did I say I love it here. We started with the blue crab claws ($16) and the grilled oysters (5 for $16). The claws came out quickly and they were delicious. Shortly after finishing the claws we were served the oysters. Again, very tasty. We also ordered the green salad and the ribeye, which we shared. Oh and I cannot forget the house made Hawaiian bread, served with butter and pineapple marmalade. Y'all, if you don't get nothing else, you have to order the Hawaiian Bread. I don't even like this type of bread but this here was divinely delicious. Everything and I mean everything was excellent. This is definitely my new fave and I highly, highly recommend. We had an app + drink night. Here's the rundown: 2 orders of oysters - they are so good and spicy. They are on the small side 1 order of raw oysters - very fresh and briny. But they are too tiny to be charging $3. Many orders of French 75 - it's a classic, but done well with cognac. Refreshing + strong (5/5 all dayyyy) Bread - those hawaiiaan rolls melt in your mouth and are AMAZINGGGGGGGG. The table bread they serve is very good too. Charcuterie board (3/5) We both weren't a fan of the pate. It didn't taste good...at all. Everything else was very good however. Chicken skins - these were sooo good. Crispy and seasoned well. Parking is on the street. I found a place a little ways down. The ambiance is beautiful. Servers come around filling your drinks and asking what else you need.
