We decided to take my mom to a new place for her bday and this did not disappoint. While the menu is predominantly seafood there are some other good options. We started with French toast bites, pork belly bites and the Thai chili hush puppies. All three had good flavor and for the most part good value. For our meals we had fish and chips, Nashville hot biscuit(HUGE), grits and sausage patties, shrimp and grits, crab cake benny and the seared tuna. Everyone in our party enjoyed their meals. We came in on a Sunday and I guess it's a slow day as they only had one server that we noticed. Even though it wasn't super busy it was a lot for one person but he took it like a champ. It is a really cool place and the decor is nice. Overall we had a good experience here and would come back if we are in the area. Stopped in for dinner with a couple of friends on a Friday night. We were seated immediately. The atmosphere felt clean, modern, and lively. They had a nice selection of oysters. I didn't enjoy any on this visit, but my buddies really enjoyed the 4 varieties they tried. Despite the menu being largely seafood oriented, I already knew I was ordering the "Kirkwood Smash" burger after my friend said it was prob his favorite burger in the area. The burger did not disappoint! The burger is not your traditional smash burger (in style or size) but was so good! The simplicity of the meat, cheese, and Calabrian mayo on that soft, brioche bun was perfect. It's one of the best burgers I've had in a while. The chips were really tasty too. The bathrooms had one of my favorite features - sinks outside the bathrooms. I know it's a small thing, but I like not having to wait for a free bathroom if I'm just washing my hands before a meal. The only downside is that our server seemed to be new. Almost every question, from "what's on draft" to "what's that Oyster's flavor like" was met with an unknowing stare and a trip to go ask someone else. Came in on a Friday night because I wanted oysters. The restaurant was bustling but we didn't need a reservation at 730pm. Easy and free street parking in front. We ordered the crab dip, hamachi, half dozen oysters, poke bowl, and the Dubai chocolate cake for dessert. The hamachi was tasty and beautifully played. I ordered my oysters with mignonette and it was fantastic. It was more of a blended texture as opposed to straight vinegar, which I loved! And the hot sauce came in an adorable bottle. The poke bowl had great ingredients but I didn't like that they use basmati instead of sushi rice. It meant the rice blended up with the ingredients rather than sticking together in little bundles of yum. Service was 11/10! Our waitress saw me struggling to untangle my necklace and offered to tag team it with me! She even went to find a safety pin to help undo the knot! We were pleasantly surprised with live music as well. All in all, the vibe is great here. Upscale but casual with good food and beverages. This was my third time here and I had a wonderful experience. We sat at the bar which is a bit of an interesting mix of curated, trendy, and sports bar. Big tvs.. not sure if they throw off the vibe or make it unique. Not a huge sports fan so it didn't bring me any joy personally. Opted to choose off their cocktail list because I haven't had the best experience with them in the past and I'm very glad we did. Old fashioned and Negroni were perfect. Give me a giant ice cube for these drinks or nothing at all. Then we got the hush puppies Thai Chili and pork belly bites. Delish. Chefs kiss. Service was also good. A Truly Memorable First Visit. The ambiance was special and inviting. A perfect spot for unwinding after a long day at work. I stopped in for a quick bite and was warmly greeted by a sweet hostess. My server, India, was absolutely spectacular. She went above and beyond to make my first-time dining experience incredible. I had the oysters and the papaya salad which were both fresh and delicious. We wanted a lobster roll and the closest place was the Argonaut. We should have went somewhere else. The food was not good. The place is a good size yet we were only 1 of 2 guests in the entire place and service was really slow. I know this is a seafood place people enjoy but I was extremely disappointed in the food. My homemade lobster roll puts this to shame. It was dry, tasteless, and skimpy on the lobster. Also, there were quite a few shells in it as we so we couldn't eat it freely. I have to find a good weekday seafood place. I can't think of one I enjoy off the top of my head and that's the problem. I will go back and try something else, but this was a let down. One positive, I love restaurants that have sinks to wash your hands before/after eating outside the bathroom. Top of my head, only place I know that has that is Newks. I've been here a few times, nestled in the middle of kirkwood it has a great location. Most of the time we come for a cocktail and light bites, but today I got take out. I was craving a lobster roll and I picked argonaut to suffice. While this is advertised as a seafood roll, it does have lobster in it. By far the worst lobster roll I have ever had. Not because of the blend of shrimp and lobster, but it was overly salted. I have never complained in my life about salt, it was so bad I threw my 25 dollar lobster roll in the trash. It wasn't even that buttery. The chips were the only thing I ate. I made my own remoulade at home to dip them in. Would be nice if they came with something. The food was ready in time. Argonaut feels like any upscale raw bar. Think McCormick and Schmidt's but smaller. Bottom line I'll come back to get drinks, but never again will I order food. read more

One of my favorite things is there is a non-alcohol drink shop called soberish across the complex and they allow you to bring drinks from the shop into restaurant. They also have a few cocktails not on the menu from soberish if you ask. There is an upstairs area as well that was not in use so seems to be ample seating. We settled in to their bar and enjoyed a couple of cocktails, with the martini doing its job. We ordered a few snacks, as well. The cracked black pepper was too much. The citrus was...fine. Butchers steak, $20 - What a let down. Verrrrry underwhelming. The kitchen thought that the chimichurri would prevail on the steak, but they completely forgot to salt & pepper the steak. Rule #1 - ya always S&P steaks. I had to ask for salt, which made it...fine. Would I order these 2 dishes again? Absolutely not. Would I even come back to this joint? Def not. I ate it because I was hungry. Did I finish my steak? Let me tell you, your girl LOVES some fresh seafood so I was too excited to check this new neighborhood spot out! Sat at the bar and ordered the Kirkwood Kiwi Margarita and the Georgia Peach to drink and the Shrimp & Lobster Roll to eat. The Kirkwood Kiwi Margarita was sooo good! I was pleasantly surprised at how light, fresh, and delicious the flavors were and I could actually taste the liquor (tequila) which was a plus for me when I'm drinking cocktails. The Georgia Peach was very well-balanced and I would absolutely order it again. The Shrimp & Lobster Roll came with "House Chips" and while I was expecting some regular potato chips, these were hand cut thinly sliced pieces of actual potatoes and were pretty good. The Shrimp & Lobster Roll was also tasty and I had no real complaints. My bartenders, Ava and Jasmine were super friendly and amazing! Great new raw bar in Kirkwood downtown {where Kirkwood Public house used to be} We have been twice and tried about everything. Nothing we disliked, everything was solid - good fresh fish and priced very well. I like the 3 options you have for dressing up the fresh fish. The shrimp cocktail had huge shrimp. Loved that they have options for the kiddos {huge reason we don't go to fishmonger more there is just nothing for our toddler to eat} Looks like upstairs will be a cool lounge area soon and it feel like you can come casual, but it's a little more upscale than the rest of the restaurants in downtown Kirkwood -which is a win for the area for sure! We started with a dozen oysters, so fresh! There are a variety of oysters to choose from and each one has a different origin with a unique taste. The oysters came with a vinaigrette sauce that stood out to us that really enhanced the flavor of the oysters! The clam chowder, hamachi, and pork belly are great starters! The clam chowder was rich in flavor with crispy bacon bits! The hamachi was super fresh and the sauce paired well with it. The pork belly had an excellent glaze! They don't skimp out on the pork belly either, the cut's were big and fulfilling! Get the Kirkwood Smash Burger! It's one of the popular dishes off the menu for a reason. Looks like a simple burger, but the patty itself was juicy and the aioli sauce really tied the flavors together, little bit of a kick but we loved it. We got the Valentine's Day special: the Surf and Turf which consisted of their steak and scallops. Also love how large the scallops were, it was seared perfectly, and the steak was yum as well! We LOVE the Argonaut! We go in at least 3x/month sometimes just my wife and I for a date, sometimes we bring our boys. We always start with oysters and it's so fun because we can try different oysters every time we go in! I love their Bijou and my wife loves their white wine selection. We ususally get two crudos (our favorites are Hamachi with Mediterranean finish and Ahi with Chili Crunch finish) and we nearly always get a smash burger and blackened fish sandwich to share, although we also LOVE the seafood roll, the ceviche, and the shrimp cocktail and will mx those in on occasion. We rarely have room for dessert, but when we do we LOVE the peach cobbler cheese cake or the key lime pie! 4.5 stars. Situated in the newer section of Kirkwood this restaurant had a very clean, chic aesthetic that blends in with the rest of the newer businesses around it. It was a random day of the week that I went so it wasn't busy at all and I was seated right away. I started out with a cocktail: the siren's pearl ( vodka , lychee liqueur and dry vermouth ). It was strong and refreshing and surprisingly not too sweet. For appetizer I ordered the seared tuna. Now this sounds simple but it was cooked perfectly and had this really delicious blackened seasoning. A perfect bite to start out the meal. For my entree I ordered the fish sandwich with fries. The sandwich itself was perfectly seasoned and the fries were nice and crispy but I would say the portion size was a bit small. It was pretty much gone in 4 bites. If you are somewhat hungry maybe try a different item on the menu but I do believe a lot of their items range on the smaller side but all very tasty. I recommend this spot definitely if you're looking to grab a quick light bite or refreshing drink after a long day at work. read more

The Argonaut looked promising, as seen in the photo of its exterior and some of the curated pictures on Google Maps of some of its food options. The photos looked pretty cool, and I looked forward to trying what they offered. I arrived around 4:30. The plan was to meet the group that I was meeting and try to experience a Happy Hour in this city. Sometimes, finding a good Happy Hour can be challenging. Because of the time we were to meet, I opted to bring my pretty young daughter and made sure to be prepared to meet a friend and his partner for a quick spell before they returned to their new home country. He pulled up, half greeted everyone, and whatever he was, rudely expressed how he "couldn't have this" when referring to my daughter and me pulling up a seat to the counter. Cool, I'll move, but he never presented any alternatives. Like, "Hello, ma'am, you might not be able to sit at the counter, but these tables beside it are authorized." Something like that. That should've been my sign to get out, but I stayed so my friend could meet my daughter and spend some time with her. I figured out the seating for us all and commenced completing and receiving my order. I had the 12 HH oysters on the half-shell, which were fine. The hushpuppies were garbage. My starting beverage was the strawberry mint mule, which was mid-at-best, but it had fresh mint, which was the biggest highlight of that drink. The bartender who made it was pretty nice, but assuming he is the manager, that person needs training. The restaurant is in Kirkwood. You'll get a variety of customers at that time of day. Never will I go to the fake-Optimist again, plus The Optimist has better food. read more

I live in the neighborhood and I wanted this to be good but not last night. The space is very nice and they have a big patio area in front but we sat inside which is also a nice open space surrounded by glass. We ordered hush puppies and drinks to start. Both were mediocre. I've had hush puppies all over the south and it's easy to get a decent hush puppy. These were cake like and dry. The chili sauce was delicious although overly hot. The cocktail which was an off menu order, margarita using mezcal was terrible. It was like a glass of lime juice with some mezcal added. I sent it back for repair asking to add some simple syrup and a splash of soda hoping it could be salvaged but came back pretty much the same. The bottom of the glass had some sweetness once getting there so I guess the drink was never stirred. $16 drink. The smash burger was tasty and the fries were really great. These might be my favorite fries ever. After my partner finished the burger and we were waiting for the seared tuna which never showed and asked the waiter who later apologized as it seemed the order was never put in. They got it to me fairly quickly and it was acceptable. Our waiter was very nice but seemed a bit overwhelmed and I had to wave him down to get water glasses refilled. The water glasses are much too small, 6 oz maybe, so refilling often would be necessary and I recommend they invest in bigger ones. I live nearby and I'd come back for a beer with those fantastic fries and maybe oysters at the bar sometime but last night was not a good experience overall. I think there's potential so I'm going to give it another try. read more
