Cozy, community oriented Japanese cafe in the heart of Vienna. I stopped in on a Friday morning and the place was a total vibe. Good beats, friends huddled over tables sharing secrets and gossip, and of course one of the best lattes in town. I recently got hooked on Kyoto lattes during my last trip to NY - - it's basically a latte sweetened with just a hint of condensed milk and it is absolutely delicious. I was so glad to see it on the menu here as well as some high quality, hand whisked matchas (I am very leary of matchas in coffee shops but this placed looked legit) and a beautiful looking Japanese soda. Kin popped up on Yelp and the menu looked really nice so we made a stop through Vienna. Located on Church Street so street parking was easiest for me. Not sure if there's a dedicated lot behind the building. Small ish space with a few tables but they were packed so a lot of people were waiting near the entrance. We ordered a Kyoto Latte and a Cold Whisk Matcha. Both drinks were not too sweet which we loved. They have multiple drink options/flavors that sound like they're worth trying like the banana pudding matcha or biscuit latte. Got the carrot cake latte and it was delicious. I feel this is a nice autumn drink with the warm spices of a carrot cake mixing incredibly well with the coffee I got it iced since it is still hot out, but I feel this would be a comforting hot latte too. I have not tried the baked goods here but they look good, the sitting area looks great for catching up with friends or doing remote work. Parking may be difficult during busy times and weekends. We went one weekend at 10am and was met with a 40min wait so we tried again a different weekend at 8am. No line! Tried a latte and carrot cake matcha. Happy to report the carrot cake matcha was actually more flavor than sweet. The latte was well made too. It's KIN(d) of a score when you find a place that makes matcha well and this place is it! Stopped in on a Friday and it was busy- for good reason! There were plenty of tables and chairs (WiFi was pretty strong), with people posted up working. I got the carrot cake matcha which was a bit sweet (~$8 for a 12oz), so would probably opt for just the normal matcha next time. The matcha tiramisu was really good and not too sweet! The cafe is located on the back side of the building of you can't find it and there is a parking area right outside the door. I went a couple weeks into them still being newly opened so yes there was a bit of a line but they were moving through it efficiently. There looks to be decent seating inside but honestly there were so many people in there I could tell. I had the banana pudding matcha and it was pretty good! Was SOO excited to try this place after seeing so much hype all over social media. I've heard amazing things about carrot cake matcha especially. Unfortunately, I didn't think the matcha was anything to write home about. The ratio of matcha powder to water seemed off for the kyoto matcha latte- a bit too watery. Also, $7.50 post tax for a 12 oz matcha latte (not a specialty, regular matcha) is a bit too steep in my opinion. Maybe the hype is due to the aesthetics, because I do agree that the ambiance and vibe of the place are amazing. I loved KIN so much! I felt like I walked straight into Japanese cafe. The vibes were very relaxing and I loved all the wood and little decorations they included. I can tell it's meant to be very homey vibes with the lamps and vinyls! The girls that were working were also so sweet and allowed our dog to stop in as well which was so nice. The star of the show, the matchas. We got one regular matcha latte which had oat milk to have a baseline and then got one banana matcha latte. We loved both of them so much. The matcha is clearly high quality so you're not going to like it if you like American matcha which is more lightly colored and less bitter. Japanese matcha is bold and these drinks did not disappoint. The banana matcha latte was sweet while the matcha latte was less sweet. I had enough share of overrated matchas but this was not one of them. It was a small parking lot but upon entering it felt like someone's apartment, felt like a tight knit area. I ordered the carrot cake matcha as well as banana bread and both were delicious. Banana bread felt like it was fresh from the oven. For the carrot cake matcha, it felt creamy and had the subtle taste of carrot which was interesting but very flavorful. There were 12oz and 16oz and I liked that you can upgrade for only 0.50 cents more. I think this café is owned by a Korean owner because it has a very similar atmosphere to cafés in Korea. I was a little disappointed because they told me they didn't have any bread when I visited. I asked if they sold pastries, and they simply said they didn't have any. At first, I thought they just didn't sell them since there weren't any on the menu, but later I found photos showing that they normally do have pastries. It would have been nice if they had explained that they were just sold out for the day. The café itself is quite small, so seating is very limited. It's also not a good place to work on a laptop. Came on a weekday afternoon, expecting to have bypassed the crowds, but was surprised to see hardly any seating left. This space is large and well equipped with chairs for working or studying, if they are available. The menu is extensive and includes a variety of specialty matchas and coffees. My first visit, I ordered an iced earl grey honey whip Matcha per a TikTok recommendation, and the presentation was phenomenal, the matcha was of high-quality, and the honey and earl grey flavors complemented the matcha so well and were perfectly, mildly sweet -- something I am always looking for in a matcha. I ended up coming back later the same day to try the iced pumpkin butter matcha, which was also really good, although the Biscoff cookie crumble topping on the latte quickly dissolved into the drink, causing the majority of the drink to have a grainy consistency. I came back the following day just to re-order the Earl Grey Honey whip Matcha latte in a larger size and also tried their chocolate macaron, which was a nice treat. I went in today and got the strawberry matcha latte. I really enjoyed it and the color was amazing. They're very efficient there and my drink was ready pretty fast. There were also a lot of people coming in too. I also got the double matcha cookie. That was delicious. I am also glad there was a parking lot since street parking can be difficult. I was on a matcha hunt and found this cafe. It's extremely popular but with my experience Im surprised it's hyped up. The matcha I got was extremely light and it was banana flavored , but unfortunately the banana flavor was very subtle. I also got a banana bread. It wasn't tasty. It was just a moist bread tbh. I paid a total of $14.58 so would say the prices are on the average. The servers were nice and sweet but the area was suffocating to me. The place was hot and there were barely windows. There is a washroom available for customers. We ordered the banana pudding latte and the biscuit latte. The service was quick and we didn't wait too long for our drinks to be ready. The banana flavor was subtle since it's from the cold foam but the latte was still tasty. The biscuit latte was also good. I tried the matcha yuzu and enjoyed the matcha itself, but I was hoping for a stronger, brighter yuzu flavor. The citrus notes were pretty subtle and got a little lost in the drink. Sick of places asking for high tips and their employees look at the screen until you select, and then all they're doing is their normal job of making the drink. The drinks were ok but ok but too sweet. Good ambiance. AMBIANCE: good, a fair amount of seating and nice wooden decor. Wish people wouldn't hog an entire table for themselves though. DRINKS: got the carrot cake and matcha. Both were good and matcha had actual matcha flavor but they were way too sweet. Could get less sweet next time. Too much ice too. COST: drives me crazy that places like these ask for tip when we have to go get our own food and wait for our own seats and there's nearly no interaction with any employee until you order. What are we tipping you for? For your basic job of making a drink??? If you start your ask at 5 or 10%, maybe that would make sense. But your employees stand there and watch the tip amount. What does this signal? That if we don't tip, they might not do a good job? We have to supplement their pay? This is so ridiculous.
