Layered is a dessert place in Fairfax that is an extension of Chateau de Chantilly. They're known for their viral fruit shaped mousses and aesthetic. There's plenty of free parking in the lot of the complex as well as indoor and outdoor seating At this cafe, you can order mousses, drinks, and some savory baked pastries. The prices are really expensive, but that'd due to the Instagram hype around the 3D fruit desserts. The ambiance inside is good for a first date or hanging out with a group of 2-4 friends to catch up. It's clean and Instagram content friendly. To order, you stand in line and one of the people behind the counter plate your desserts and takes your drink order before you pay. We got the cafe au lait and the raspberry. The cafe au lait was ~$6, the raspberry was ~$12, and each of the drinks were ~$8.50. The cafe au lait was delicious - the mouse paired well with the cake inside and wasn't overpowered by the coffee flavor. The raspberry, however, was too tart and the cookie on the bottom was really hard to break with a spoon. The pistachio latte was delicious, but the texture of the pistachios in the drink made the experience unpleasant. The mango matcha and strawberry matcha, however, were the perfect amount of sweet. I was very surprised and excited to see a bakery close to me that has the 3D fruit desserts. They have plenty of options like strawberry, raspberry, lemon, mango, and their new fruit, blueberry. I got to try lemon, strawberry, and blueberry. The blueberry was my favorite. Had a great balance between the sweetness and texture levels. While it is expensive, I see this more as a sweet treat to go to every once in a while. They also have bread and pastries out, which looked very good, and plenty of coffee drinks. The service was great and the people are very welcoming. The interior and seating are very nice and accommodating for people who want to work or relax there. My only negative was the lemon dessert. It was very bitter and not what I was expecting for lemon. I thought the lemon filling would have like a lemon meringue or lemon bar taste to it. There are a variety of seating options, and it looks like they've added a new outdoor patio as well. There's a small self-service area for some treats, but most items are ordered from behind the counter. We arrived around 8 PM, and it was busy. We waited about 15 minutes to place our order and another 15 minutes to receive our drinks and desserts. We tried the Yuzu & Limoncello, Rocher, and Café Au Lait desserts (each around $9.40), along with a tiramisu latte ($6.40). Everything was delicious--creamy, well-balanced, and full of flavor. Prices are on the higher side. The cashier was friendly, though it seemed like they might have been understaffed. That said, the team handled the crowd well. I came here days after the snow storm, so there was no line when I went around 4:30 pm yesterday. Got my mango and strawberry desserts quickly; though, my crème brûlée drink took a while to make due to orders before mine. Workers were friendly. The mango dessert had a hard shell that I cracked through with my fork. It tasted more like lilikoi inside - very tart. I tasted some mango too, but it really tasted more like lilikoi. I saw fruit chunks of what looked like mango but also fruit purée that looked and tasted like lilikoi, but I'm not certain due to this being a "mango" dessert. Still, it tasted great. I can handle that level of tartness. Presentation was very nice. Looked like a real mango. I thought the strawberry dessert would have the same texture until I took a closer look. It was softer in appearance. When I pierced it with my fork, I saw that the outside of the dessert was like firm cream. This dessert had a milder taste. It had some form of strawberry puree mixed with lots of cream. It was a hint too much cream for me, but it was good enough for me to finish. The stem (calyx) of the strawberry dessert was made of fondant, and the dessert was presented on a cookie. The cookie was stuck to the plate and fragile, so it easily crumbled as I tried to scrape it off the plate. It was almost like a Bischoff cookie. The crème brûlée was delicious. It came in a tiny cup. There was a lot of sugar at the bottom of the cup. I wasn't prepared for that. I didn't know these desserts were going to be $12-13 each. It seems a bit much. Layered is so good! I recently found out that it is owned by my other favorite coffee spot Chateau de Chantilly which is usually our once a week spot! For coffees I recommend the pistachio latte which is made with homemade pistachio cream. The pastries are amazing. I have tried a few. I love the pistachio one. It is my favorite and I don't feel like it gets enough love. My second favorite was the mango. My husband and son were hoping it would be sweeter...but for myself and my daughter we love it the way it was. The lemon was not our favorite. There is a restroom on site, to the left when you enter the building. Overall, a bougier side of the Chateau de Chantilly, but a warm welcome in Fairfax City. I've been twice during a weekday around noon time and would say I've never had to deal with the hype/lines. Plenty of pastries but I've never had the fruit pastries myself. I've gotten the cafe au lait dessert which I liked a good amount since I love coffee flavours. I like working remotely here, although the wifi did die on me once when I needed it... the only outlets I'm aware of are the ones at the island table, which I end up sitting at.
