Colossal Crab Meat Fried Rice
Hanh H.

Found Kin Long Beach shortly after we arrived in Long Beach and decided to give it a try. They were pretty busy, so we grabbed seats at the bar--which worked out perfectly! They have a full-service bar and a decent wine selection. We ordered: Salt & Pepper Calamari - Definitely unique! It was topped with these light, crispy flakes that added great texture and flavor. Crispy, tasty, and different from your typical calamari. Crab Fried Rice - LOADED with crab! They definitely did not skimp. Easily one of the best crab fried rice dishes we've had. Everything we tried was delicious, and now we're curious about the rest of the menu. We'll definitely be back to try more the next time we're in Long Beach!

A cool place for Thai food. I met my daughter here for lunch and we ordered the fried chicken, noodles, crab Rangoon and beef salad. All of the dishes were tasty but on the salty side for me. The service was friendly and professional. The food came out fast. I'll have to check out the other dishes when I'm in the area.

We decided to make the drive from Riverside to Long Beach to celebrate my friend's birthday, and I have to say... it was worth the drive! My friend ordered the Pad Thai, and since she likes her food SUPER spicy, she also tried their spicy tamarind drink. She definitely got the kick she was looking for! I went with the garlic noodles with bacon on the side--because who doesn't love having bacon with their noodles? And of course, I had to try their Thai tea, which comes with a Thai tea popsicle! Such a fun and delicious touch. The atmosphere was beautiful, the food was flavorful, and it was the perfect spot for a birthday celebration. Definitely worth the drive from Riverside! Kin Thai, you were a birthday win!

Kin in Long Beach completely blew me away! It's easy to see why this spot is so wildly popular--the flavor profiles are phenomenal, and the price point is unbeatable for the portion sizes and quality. The decor alone sets the mood with their sign defining "Kin" ("when you are bored and there is nothing else to do"), but believe me, coming here is worth planning your whole day around. Every single dish was packed with authentic, bold flavor! Follow me on Instagram - @thecannyadventurist for a deeper dive into my reviews.

BBQ Pork Ribs

Met up with my crew here for dinner the other night. This place has been on my bucket list for a while so very excited to finally be able to eat here. The food was delicious. We got the bang bang shrimp to start off with as well as the bok choy. Both were very flavorful. I loved the crunchiness of the bok choy. I have never eaten it that way, and was truly amazed. For the main on trees, we got the pas se ewe, pineapple fried shrimp, ribs, and orange chicken. Everything we ate was so delicious. Loved the fact that the orange chicken was not really bready. The pineapple fried rice was not my choice, but I was pleasantly surprised with how well it tasted, and how the raisins complimented the flavors. The rib was melt in your mouth and the sauce that went along with it to die for. The four stars is mainly for the food. The service was slow and we had to ask the busboy to find our waitress so we could place our order. That being said once we did place our order the food came out very quickly. Of course this is Long Beach so parking is going to be tough, but it will be worth it to try this food. I didn't realize that they had a bar so if you just wanted to have a drink and maybe an appetizer, this would also be a good place to come to.

Truly one of my favorite Thai spots in Long Beach. I've written plenty of good reviews! I got the panang curry and drunken noodles this time. So good, love how spicy everything is all of the time. The panang curry has capers in it, which is interesting and delicious.

A late bday get together to celebrate my daughter's birthday. We ordered a Thai ice tea to begin! What a delight since it has a popsicle stick. ( see my photo). We ordered pork jerky, chicken satay, panang curry, & Shrimp pad Thai. Every dish was deliv& authentic. Service friendly and efficient! Totally recommend this Thai restaurant. Love the restaurant decor too!

Came by on a Thursday night and got seated immediately... and then watched the line form right behind us. Timing has never been one of my talents, but apparently it was that night. Parking is a bit of a game of chance thanks to the tiny lot, so plan accordingly. Once you're inside though, the restaurant is super clean, modern, and the service is fast and attentive. We started with the papaya salad. It was just okay--I'm still trying to figure out why there was a blanket of romaine lettuce casually lounging on top. I ordered medium spice, which turned out to be "medium if you breathe fire for fun." The papaya was also a little more raw than I personally like. The tom kha soup was decent, but the real MVP was the drunken noodles with beef. Those noodles were absolutely swimming in savory goodness and perfectly soft. I would've happily ordered a second plate and called it "dessert." Overall, I'd definitely come back--mostly because those drunken noodles are already living rent-free in my head.

I was showing a NorCal friend around since I picked her up from LB and we needed to eat before visiting the aquarium. Originally, we were going to try to hit up Zuzu's petal, but the line was ridiculously long and the parking was a nightmare, so I decided to take her to my 2nd choice, which was Kin Long. I thought it would be a run-of-the-mill local, Thai place with food that is more homestyle and tastes slightly above average to hit the Thai food fix. Boy, was I wrong! First and foremost, they have their own parking lot, so YAY! It's starting to sound like my standards are low, but they aren't. OMG- their restroom is clean! JK. From the outside, it looked nice enough, but I was impressed when we entered. It had a comfy, modern, clean, and beachy elegance to it (the lights and that chandelier) without it being stuffy or looking disjointed in terms of interior decor. Servers were very polite and accommodating. I let my friend order since she was the guest. She ordered the garlic shrimp noodles and scampi shrimp to share, and the Thai tea drink with the ice cream bar. I ordered 3 cocktails (Jalapeno + tamarind, Lychee, and Thai tea martini) and they were all good (not overly sweet and weak sauce, but balanced, tasty, and had the right amount of buzz). We had a light lunch since we had AYCE hot pot later that evening (Mikiya - yes I'm a good host). The garlic noodles exceeded my expectations - shrimp were huge, seasoned well, and just cooked through, the noodles were broad, float, tender, and had a slight chewiness to it. The scampi shrimp were huge, tasty, succulent, and cooked perfectly (not surprised since the shrimp with the garlic noodles were so good). NOTHING WAS OVERCOOKED OR MADE ME GO.... "MEH...." and I've been to many Thai restaurants even the highly stylized kitschy ones like Farmhouse Thai in SF. The waiters were very attentive. They made their rounds to make sure waters were filled and all guests were taken care of. It helps they were also handsome too! LOL. I generally find many places nice in the competitive LA, but not nice enough for me to travel from the SGV. However, I will go out of my way to visit KL again to try the rest of their menu (drunken noodles, pork jerky, crab fried rice, papaya salad, etc.) because they left a good impression with me. Prices are reasonable and the quality of food, cocktails, clean restrooms, ambiance was coastal modern, has its own designated parking lot, and service was lovely.

Great experience having dinner here. We were seated quickly and got our food out in a reasonable time also. There is plenty of seating inside and out. I ordered the panang curry and my friend ordered drunken noodles. We both also got Thai tea. The presentation of drinks and food is amazing. The taste was delicious. We will definitely be coming back!

Green Papaya Salad

This place was such a pleasant surprise. From the outside, it looks pretty unassuming, but once you step inside, it's actually incredibly cute and has a warm, inviting atmosphere. One of the highlights is their Thai tea, which is served with a popsicle and seems to be one of their most popular items for good reason. It's fun, unique, and absolutely delicious. I also tried the salmon curry, which was something new for me, and I ended up loving it. The flavors were rich, balanced, and unlike anything I've ordered before. Another unexpected favorite was the wings. I'm usually not a big wings person, but these were surprisingly good--crispy, flavorful, and definitely worth ordering. Overall, the food, drinks, and atmosphere exceeded my expectations. It's a spot I would absolutely come back to and one that I would definitely recommend to others.

Guess it wasn't tasty...

Stopped in for late lunch. This place is a gem, comfortable seating, natural lighting, and beautiful bar. I had a lunch combo for 14.95; beef mango curry with rice, salad and egg roll. Mild on spice, it was delicious.. veggies cooked perfectly with carrots broccoli, cauliflower and lots of mango. With the egg roll, this was very filling. Service very good and fast/ lunch was at my table in 5-6 minutes.

Are reservations needed?

No reservation required

Does the place take reservations?

I believe not. A few weeks ago I was meeting some friends for dinner (Sunday night) and one of them called Kin Long but was told no reservations. The place can get busy at times. You might call ahead to see how busy they are.

Do they have combination/lunch specials?

Yes

This place is listed today as having outdoor seating. Is it still available? If it is, is it covered or heated? How many people can sit there? / June 8, 2023

Yes, they have a large patio. It has a roof and walls, but there are open windows. I sat there a weeks ago.

Do they have any mocktails?

yes! they have many. My favorite was the margarita on fire!

Do they have a happy hour menu?

Yes they do.... We always order the appetizers because they are to kill for

It's clear the owners put a lot of thought and creativity into making their cocktails the centerpiece of the experience. That said, the execution didn't live up to the concept. The menu appears to rotate regularly, and while the drinks were certainly unique, most of the cocktails we tried were hit or miss. At roughly $22 per drink, I expected more balance and refinement. One cocktail started with flavors reminiscent of an Old Fashioned, but after the initial sip, the combination of bitters and fruit syrups created an unpleasant cough syrup like finish. We tried a mocktail as well, and it was mostly ice and soda water, with what seemed like a collection of syrups doing most of the heavy lifting. The drinks were creative, but many of the flavor profiles felt disjointed rather than intentional. The biggest issue, however, was the bar service and sanitation practices. I watched a bartender place a cucumber garnish into a glass using his bare hands, touching the entire garnish in the process. He then continued to take credit cards, cash, and other items before stuffing ice into additional drinks with his bare hands. Whether or not this technically violates health code standards, it certainly wasn't appetizing to watch and left a poor impression. Parking is another challenge. There is no dedicated parking, and unless you get lucky, expect to park several blocks away and walk. Overall, the atmosphere is a lot of fun and the cocktail menu is ambitious, but the drinks didn't justify the price point, and the sanitation concerns were hard to overlook. I wouldn't rush back, especially given the cost and parking difficulties.

The experience was amazing. Speaking of Speakeasy! First, if you don't want to (most likely) get turned away, you will definitely need to make a reservation on OpenTable a few days before. Parking around the area was tough, but you may find a spot if you circle around the blocks. You will need to arrive early to look for parking. When you arrive, you will see the Mexican restaurant El Barrio Cantina. You will want to walk into the alley on the left, then you will see the door with a lantern on your left. Congrats, you have arrived! Knock on the door and tell them your reservation. The bar was popular. Their reservations were all full for the night. Their cocktails were amazing, creative, delicious, and Tokyo-inspired. I love their cool menu design. The bartender was friendly and made some nice recommendations. I had a Meguro River. It's creamy and pretty with floral decorations, served in a mini pot. The Okinawan Gimlet is in cool green. They even have alcoholic gummies and alcoholic shaved ice on menu. They do have a time limit of 1.5 hours seating. I can't wait to come back again.

We sat at the bar, and I expected to receive service from the bartender, but he didn't acknowledge us for the entire night. Instead, our server took our order. After a while, she informed us that the crispy rice we ordered was sold out. She mentioned that the bartender was supposed to let us know, but he never did. What made the experience more uncomfortable was that the bartender seemed to be giving most of his attention to the Caucasian customers on the other side of the bar. We were the only Asian customers there, and unfortunately, this left us feeling like we were being treated differently because of our race. The good food and drinks helped compensate for the poor service, so we decided not to let it ruin our evening. However, things got even more disappointing at the end. After I paid, I noticed that I had been charged for the crispy rice even though we never received it. When our server tried to address the issue, the bartender appeared to ignore both her and us, so we eventually left. I hope management sees this review and reaches out to me to address the overcharge and the overall experience. Overall, although the food and drinks were good, the service and the way we were treated left a very negative impression. Unfortunately, I will not be returning.

We stopped by late Saturday night and were able to snag an immediate walk-in at the bar at Hao Peng You, which is the intimate speakeasy portion of Midnight Oil. The decor definitely reminded me of my grandparents' house in Taiwan, with vintage, ornate wooden chairs, dragon/lion statue carvings, and even a historic century old marital bed that had been repurposed into a booth. The drinks were also VERY unique, with my favorite being Hua sheng (literally meaning peanut), which was crafted from a nostalgic childhood peanut milk drink. All our cocktails were crafted very well, to the point where I thought they were a bit on the lighter side since I couldn't really taste the alcohol. This section does get really busy though and only had one bartender who is making/serving drinks and taking orders, so do expect a bit of a wait. So this is a review that's been a *long* time coming (I've just been chronically overwhelmed for an…read moreequally long time.) I haven't been here often, but I *was* here right around when they opened, wherein I determined that the food ranged from quality but a bit overpriced, to just overpriced, a feeling I would still hold, generally speaking. Great vibe, solid service, but maybe a little pretentiously priced (and/or it's just stupid expensive to run a restaurant in this area, granted.) And with *super* pretentiously-priced cocktails, for how relatively simple they mostly are (if I'm gonna spend $18+ plus tip on a drink, I expect Baby Gee-level cocktails.) They also had an impressive wall of craft beer on tap, but also a bit pricey, especially compared to places not on 2nd street, so there was never a particular *draw*. But then I never actually finished reviewing it, because I'm super behind. Anyway, then also not particularly recently, they launched a happy hour, which at the time, especially for this particular part of Long Beach, was pretty stupidly good, with $5 decent sized smashburgers (6 with cheese, 10 with cheese and also fries), as well as $5 craft beer, pretty much all of them, including the fancy, exciting stuff (exciting if you're a nerd like me, the barrel aged stuff, for instance). They also had one specific half hour at the time, which I'd like to immortalize as a super fun idea, where one specific cheap but craft beer was some stupid price, I think like a dollar, but since they had a whole wall of rotating craft beer, a *different* specific cheap craft beer any given day. That's not relevant at all to my current review, but it was fun. Anyway, I still didn't write a review like a year ago when I took advantage of that happy hour, though I did take advantage of it a solid couple of times. Skip forward again to just a few weeks ago, I happened to be attending an event in the general area again, an event that was going to involve more alcohol than food and for which having a happy-hour-timed dinner in the area was going to be useful, so I figured I'd check out whether the happy hour was still there, and it was. At least as of a few weeks ago, the happy hour (3-6 weekdays) was still a thing, and it had gone up a whopping 55 cents per item. Ends up being effectively ~$17 plus tip for a quality smashburger, quality fries and a craft beer, though they didn't have as *many* of the fancy (barrel-aged or equivalent) stuff as they had the first time, they did still have some, and it was still $5.55 for any beer on draft they had. So happy hour wise, that's a pretty good price for this part of the country, I'd say. Obviously only since the burgers and fries *are* also absolutely quality burgers and fries. Not quite as wonderful as my gold standard smashburger at The Stache, perhaps, but still a great smashburger. My opinion on spending almost 20 bucks for what is effectively still just an old fashioned, hasn't changed, though. :p
