We haven't been to Kim Phung Vietnamese Restaurant before so decided to give them a try. They're across the street from Shun Fa Noodle House and RGK BBQ. We dropped in on a late Saturday afternoon (around 4:00pm). They interestingly had Vietnamese electronic music up on the TV. Our waitress brought out cups of hot tea. Menu is standard. They have a few specials (banh xeo, canh chua and banh bot loc) that are harder to find in town. - Strawberry shake ($6.50) - Goi cuon (#2) ($9.25) - we asked for the salad rolls to be made with just shrimp inside. Decent. - Herbs - bean sprouts, basil, lime wedges and rau muong (shredded water spinach). - Pho tai (#8) ($13.50 large) - O wasn't impressed with how little noodles they gave and had to use some of their condiments to brighten up the broth's flavour. - Bun bo hue (#30) ($14.75 large) - the broth was pure disappointment. No complexity to it. Shocking that they have this labelled as one of their specialty noodles on the menu. No issues with the meat. But for a large, the noodle portion they gave was small and meagre. - Bun rieu (#31) ($14.75 large) - the vermicelli was thin with little substance to it. Broth was better than the BBH but still weak and lacking in depth. Didn't find anything special or satisfying at KP. The large bowls didn't fill any of us up. Won't be coming back. 2.5 stars.

Not good. Do not go here. I love small businesses however this place does not serve quality fresh food. Our food was microwaved as I heard it. The rice is old, the toppings are minimal. The restaurant was cold and had no aroma of food. The service was an older lady who was nice. But food was not food as we were wanting a nice comfort Vietnamese food.

Bun Bo Hue

Kim Phung is one of my favourite spots for Bun Bo Hue in Vancouver! It's up there with Cafe Xu Hue (in our books). Fiance and I have been here many many times and it never disappoints. Our go-to dish is their Bun Bo Hue. It's as authentic as it gets. Great flavour, perfect spiciness, with a good portion of meats. We also like to start off our meal with their Nem Nuong (Grilled Pork Patty) Salad Rolls. On previous visits, we've also had their Bun Rieu (which is also popular there), the Seafood Udon Noodle Soup (Bun Canh Do Bien), and Shrimp Salad rolls.. all good! As mentioned earlier, one of our favourites. A great hole-in-the-wall pho spot!

The owner's daughter is so so so friendly. This store normally closes at 10pm but we were not aware of their holiday hours for the month of December (they close at 7pm). We came by and were trying to get in through the back door when the owner's daughter came out and took us in and told us that she is actually the chef so as long as she is here, there is food hahaha. She totally did not need to let us in but was kind enough to do so! The restaurant gives off a very homey and cozy vibe. Menu prices are all affordable but heads up: CASH ONLY! The broth came steaming hot and was packed with flavour. Noodles were perfect too!! Perfect for the cold weather-- will 100% be back. Kim Phung just earned 3 loyal customers :)

3 small pieces of beef balls..

Ordered the rare beef and beef balls pho and it only came with 3 tiny pieces of the beef balls.. wtf .. $16.99 for that ...

I drove by KP almost everyday on my way to work, it is so unnoticeable to me that I never thought of eating here. Today I happened to find a parking spot outside its front door, oh well might as well give it a try... This pho place is very small, does not have any fancy decoration, price is not particular on the low side, service is just so so. And why should this hole in the wall deserve a good rating? The Main reason is its food! I believe KP has been in this same busy location (Victoria & 42nd ave) for over 20 years. If one small eatery can survive such a long time among its competitors, there got to be something unique about it. The main reason is its food! I am pretty sure I shall return for more consider it is not the most popular or likeable pho place. The main reason is its food! Taste so good!

There are so many hidden gems along this stretch of Victoria, I'm having trouble trying them all. Parking is available along Victoria, as well as the side streets. This one definitely looks rather dumpy on the outside, but don't let the dirty canopy fool you. Everybody knows - the dirtier looking the Asian restaurant, the better the food tastes. The place is a mom and pop operation. Mom takes the orders, and dad whips up the food. Pricing here is a maybe $1 more than the competition, but it's still mostly in line. The BBH here has a nice kick to it. Generous portions of meat, with chunks of oh-so-tasty pig's blood. Served with plenty of cilantro and green onions on top. Beautiful. My friend had the roast duck. I tried a piece. Bright yellow skin, and nice soft meat. Tasty. The problem I have with places like these is that everything looks good. I'd be here for months, getting fat. Recommended.

Pho Dac Biet

Kim Phung is one of the many nondescript Vietnamese restaurants that dot the Vancouver food scene. Located on the busy Victoria Drive strip of Killarney, it's quite easy to pass by this shop without noticing it. The Pho Dac Biet, or house special pho, was $9.50 for a large bowl. As it turns out, it wasn't actually that big of a bowl of pho (at least when compared with other large pho bowls at other restaurants). Overall, nothing really "special" about this pho but it gets the job done. The Com Ga Bi Chu Hap ($10.75) included grilled chicken, shredded pork skin, and "meat pie" on rice. We topped it off with a fried egg because... well, it would be a shame to have a Vietnamese rice dish without a fried egg. The "meat pie" is similar to yuk beng (a Chinese meat pie made with coarsely ground pork). This is pretty much your typical Vietnamese hole-in-the-wall... nothing overly bad with it but nothing that would entice me to go out of my way to return either.

Bun Bo Hue

Came to this hole in the wall on a recommendation from my aunt and it was the best pho I've had in my life! I'm from Toronto, and it seems that Vancouver pho is a lot better and this place was even better than some of the other places we've visited so far. FYI, cash only. We ordered the Bun Rieu (~$12), a tomato based soup that tasted "sweet" in the meat soup/flavourful way and it came with the traditional shrimp paste, too. Also got a Bun Bo Hue (~$11) which had an assortment of meats including pork hock/leg which seems to be a yummy staple in Vancouver pho places. Slightly too spicy than what I enjoy, but I think it's supposed to be spicy. What really stood out was the delicious ("thick"?) broth that felt like more than just water and msg (though I'm sure was there too). And the thick, crunchy, lengthwise cut green and red onions. Most places dice them up into little pieces but I love how this place cut them up (with a peeler?) into longer pieces. Both were large sizes, not gigantic as in Toronto, but enough to fill up both myself and my wife. We also got the shrimp salad roll (~$8), which was professionally wrapped very tightly. Above average. I'm not a fan in general, but my wife liked it. Overall, super tasty Vietnamese noodles for a decent price (for Vancouver).

Chicken pho, beef pho, tapioca dumplings filled with shrimp & pork
Rhonda K.

Definite hole in the wall. Mom and pop shop. Cash only. Just over a handful of tables. You'll notice the prices to be a tad higher than other Vietnamese restaurants, but what you get here is that extra care and "homey" flavour put into each dish. The menu also offers the less common selections: congee, banh hoi (thin pressed noodles), banh bot loc (chewy tapioca dumplings with and without banana leaves), banh xeo (crepe-pancake), stir fried dishes, other kinds of noodle soups.... Their pho ga (chicken noodle) is different in that it has more quail eggs, gizzard, and pork blood cubes. The steamed tapioca dumplings wrapped in banana leaves are more plump than other ones I've had (say Mui Ngo Gai, Mr Red) and has a stronger aroma infused from the leaves. The seafood noodle soup has a pleasant crab-tasting broth (reminds me of crab flavour cup noodle but without the msg sting against your tongue and is many times better). My partner said he'd order it again. My duck congee came out piping hot in a big pho-sized bowl, with the meat nicely plated separately. I don't think I've had duck prepared this way before; it was really good and you just need to try it yourself! The congee was super savoury and not bland at all. You'll find other good stuff in there too. Let me know if you can finish that huge portion in one sitting. Nothing seems to be too salty. MSG gives me side effects and I've yet to feel any here. Love how they garnish with plenty of fried onions and garlic. (But not a fan of the soapy minty herb they use) Will be coming a lot more now. There may be a slight communication barrier, but they're nice and friendly. If you can't speak Vietnamese, I think they may understand Cantonese better than English. Parking at the back apparently. It may look dark and closed at night but if you get a little closer you'll see the little open sign on. Strolling in after 9pm is a-okay.

I read the other reviews and thought to myself: really??? what?? Nobody else likes this restaurant? I've been a regular of this place for the last couple of years. It is a tiny-hole-in-the-wall type of vietnamese restaurant run by a small family. I see Dad, daughter and son running the front of the house, while Mom is in the back kitchen! Any visit is not the same without ordering their freshly made salad rolls! I suspect they do really make it fresh to order since I can taste the freshness in their quality of the salad roll plus the fact I always have to wait 10 mins. They serve an amazing pho(I particularly like the seafood noodle soup but beef ain't bad either) with a clear, homemade tasting broth that doesn't make it thirsty for the next two hours! Sadly, I always end up ordering the SAME things everytime I go, so I have not had the pleasure of exploring other items on their menu! (O wait, do not order their sandwich-much better at Au petite cafe or Bon cafe on Main St.) Save your appetite on their phos!

#10 beef with tendon. Solid.

Came here on a Monday night and it was absolutely empty. Gave me reasons to think the food wouldn't be prepared well. Turns out that at Kim Phung they offer the best condiment selection. Diced Thai chilies really trumps for people looking to add spice to their soup. Outside of the condiments, the soup was hot and had a solid base and body. No flavour is missing in this bowl. Noodles were tender, but there is hints of msg. If that isn't your thing, you could avoid. But I still found it very enjoyable and a place I would definitely return to.

Average quality Vietnamese. I prefer to go not too far away to the Vietnamese area on Kingsway for some much better choices.

The space is much nicer, with high ceilings and lots of light - great looking bistro. I ended up trying the following: - Mussels: Very good. Classic dish, but I really like the use of cream in the broth. - Bánh Mì Cay Hải Phòng (Spicy Baguette Sticks): Good. A nice little snack, although it would be easy to recreate at home. - Lamb Chops: Very good. Cooked just right, and the pepper sauce added extra flavour. - Fried Frog Legs: Very good. This was probably the surprise dish for me. They weren't just the legs, but the entire bottom of the frog, so the pieces were huge. The garlic, butter and chili flakes gave it a extra punch. I really enjoyed this one. - Pho Bo: Good. Not the best pho I've had, but it's good enough to stand on it's own. Service was quite good. Very cheerful and quite attentive. Overall a nice meal. It's a great space, the food is solid, and service to match. What I really like is having the variety of both French and Vietnamese dishes, without either of them suffering in quality. Only downside is that is it expensive for what you get.

The menu isnt big but they do have a reasonable selection of items but mostly dinner entrees We ordered a mini version of pho bo (beef broth pho), french escargot and the spicy baguette stick. The bone broth was good and the price for the mini version is good for a light lunch. We both enjoyed the spicy baguette stick with the pork pate. A pleasant surprise. However i find the escargot a bit pricey with the quantity and the way it was prepared. Slightly too oily to my personal prefence The iced vietnamese coffee we ordered tasted similar to a regular iced coffee, missing the sweet condensed milk flavor for a vietnamese coffee

My wife and I stopped in for dinner one evening and each ordered the aforementioned noodle soup--she got a small ($11.75 plus tax) and I got a regular ($12.75 plus tax). We also got an order of salad rolls ($7.50 plus tax), which comes with 2 rolls. The rolls came quite late. They were pretty standard, coming with fried tofu, vermicelli, and lettuce. The peanut dipping sauce was on the liquidy, salty soy sauce side of things -- I wish it were creamier and less salty. 3/5 The soups were decent. The broth was peppery, with some nice, gentle spices detectable in there. I asked for a side of chili oil, which helped amplify the broth. You get a generous portion of noodles, fried tofu, and vegetables (broccoli, bok choy, carrot). Unfortunately the veggies were quite overcooked -- the broccoli was almost soggy, so were the carrots and bok choy. 3/5 All in all, middle-of-the-road veggie pho. The broth is pleasant. The veggies were overcooked, but plentiful and nicely chosen. Decent place for veggie pho.
