While I was overwhelmed with excitement over the fact that the Davisville area had another Indian restaurant to try out, I was left with a flow of questions that leave me wondering if I'd come back again. Why such a steep price? - I understand that the type of ingredients in a majority of Indian cuisine are pretty expensive. Despite that, I don't expect to see less of what I ordered and more side dishes to fill you up instead. I ordered the Lazeez Murg Tikka Masala (Chicken Tikka Masala, if you will) which same in a small bowl with another bowl of basmati rice, salad, and what looked to be chickpea curry. All of this for $16.55. Why is there 'frozen vegetable medley' in my basmati rice? - As the dish was laid in front of me, I looked at my basmati rice confused. This was the first time I saw, what I assume to be, frozen vegetables (peas, carrots and corn) in my rice. Didn't really add to the basmati rice. In fact, it looked of lesser value than I would assume it'd be. Why are there so many different things on my plate? - I didn't really care for the salad and chickpea curry, if I didn't order it. If that was the reason for the $16.55, I'd rather not have it and pay less. The Chicken Tikka Masala itself was pretty good regardless. The chicken was cooked gorgeously tender and the aroma of the masala was intoxicating. I do have to point out that my first spoonful of the masala was a bit on the gritty side though... Masala mix that didn't blend well enough? Who knows. There's a lot of work to be done here at Khau Gully, but with improvements I think it can stand with the rest of the Indian restaurants in the area, because none of them are really good. read more

This is certainly the best Indian food outlet we have had the chance to experience in Toronto, and I have tried many. Loved every dish, in particular the aloo vada slider and the veg biryani. The customer service was definitely 5 stars. Extremely polite, friendly and helpful. The place itself is 5 stars as it's very beautiful. Amazing decor. Amazing atmosphere. Very clean. The food was average. Portions and sizes average. The cottage cheese stuffed mozzarella was extremely salty and so was lagan ka murg. We were all very thirsty the whole evening. Naan was kind of dry. So, a large group of 12 friends decided to jam at Khau Gully to explore Indian cuisine! We're all Indians from different parts of India so this seemed a great meetup! Since our orders were extensive, I don't want to emphasize much on the flavor. I detested my fish fry! It was zero in flavor and very high on price. The main course dishes were not bad.. we ordered a lamb gravy that was tomato based and a dum biryani that was not too bad, and you can't go wrong with naans ever. The deserts which the manager/ owner kept promoting were average good! I wish I could be happy about the dishes but I truly wasn't.. and when the bill came! Pretty good! I ordered the lunch combo and got the Awahdi Subzi (mixed vegetables in a creamy tomato cashew sauce with crunchy nuts sprinkled on top) as a main, which also included naan, rice, salad and daahl as part of the combo for roughly $14. While the combo is a good deal, the combo items themselves aren't that great. The naan was a little bland and dry, the daahl didn't have much flavour beyond the taste of salt, and the salad was mostly just boring lettuce. However the Awahdi was really really good and full of flavour- I'd definitely recommend it and order it again. I think the next time I come back I'll just order a main dish with no combo. I also got the chai tea which was amazing. It's the real stuff cooked on a stovetop- no dinky store bought tea bags. It was so good my only complaint is it comes in a super tiny cup. Put in a phone order a few nights ago and we are SOLD. First, the guy we spoke to on the phone (Bala) was so friendly and helpful! Second, the food was great. Quite rich (in a good way!), so I would recommend ordering (or making) some extra plain rice to accompany everything. We will be ordering again for sure! read more

Visited Khau Gully April 2018 when it was still fairly new. There was a very small hair in the tandoor platter but our server took our concern seriously and the manager graciously offered us 2 free desserts. That's good customer service. I would go back and recommend this restaurant to anyone whose looking to enjoy some Indian food in a hip artsy space. read more

Atmosphere (5/5): The restaurant definitely has above average decor! I really enjoy their drawings/paintings on the wall because it clearly displays the Indian culture. Also, their use of bold colours for the interior design (pops of red) really lights up the environment! The restaurant is spacey and there is lots of room to eat and socialize with a large group of friends. Service (2.5/5): The service is slightly below average to what is expected of a restaurant in the Yonge/Eglinton area. We thought we were not assigned to a designated server because no one had introduced themselves to us as their server. However, every time we request for service, the other servers would listen to our question and then their colleague (who I suppose is our server), would come over to us again. This was kind of annoying because we repeated our questions oftentimes. Similar to a lot of people, it is our first time at this restaurant and first time trying Indian food for some of my friends. As a lot of foreigners/tourists people visit this restaurant, I think it would be nice if the servers give a quick introduction of the menu. Nonetheless, we still asked for recommendations, but I would have preferred if the servers initiated. Something that I found weird was that when we asked for the bill to be split equally among our table, the owner (as what it appears like) came up to speak to us that it is not in their policy to split bills. However, he will let us this time. I found that policy really pathetic because this is a fairly pricy restaurant (~$25-30pp) and they are not willing to provide such a simple service. Quality of Food The food was in my opinion overpriced and not the best that I've had. We got roughly the following dishes for a group of 6 and order sides of naan and roti to go with our curries. Appetizers Tandoori Shrimp (1/5) - Simply overpriced (~$22 for 6 shrimps) and tasted like shrimps on a grill. Claypot Chicken (4/5) - This is one of the better dishes I had tonight. The chicken had an interesting smokey flavour and the portion was big (6 pieces) Mains Paneer Curry (3/5) - I was surprised by how small the portion of this curry was compared to the other curries. It was literally in a egg skillet. However, the cottage cheese was fresh and the curry was a good taste. Lamb Curry (2/5) - This was the most disappointing curry dish because it was recommended to us by the server and it did not meet our expectations. The lamb simply did not have the typical "lamb flavour" Spicy Chicken Curry (4/5) - This was the better curry we had tonight. The sauce is moderately spicy and the chicken was tender. Chicken Briyani (2/5) - I was the most excited for this dish because I've seen the hype about it online. Unfortunately, this was a disappointment. The top layer of the dish was plain rice and we did not know that we had to stir it before serving. The chicken was cut into very small pieces and the overall dish was small. The idea of cutting open the bread to serve the dish is nice, but we noticed that the bread was too hard to consume. Drinks Mango Lassi (4/5) - This drink is really good and yogurty and is fairly priced at $5. Overall Review At the end, I paid $30 for my meal (~$180 meal for the table). I think at this price range, I would have easily gotten a lot more quality and quantity at other restaurants. Also, I probably would have been more satisfied going to an authentic Indian restaurant than following the hype on BlogTO. It was a good place to try and bring friends who have never tried Indian food because their curries regularly are not spicy at all. However, personally, I would never come back again. read more

I really great find. This restaurant is walking distance to Davisville station and has very unique Indian flavours. We ordered the Daal, their famous Biryana and the Paneer dish. All three dishes had various spices to make each dish very flavourable. Their drink menu is quite good too. I had the Lime soda that was made in house. Their menu is quite extensive so I definitely will have to come back and try other dishes. Prices are fair and most mains are under $20. This place is definitely succeeding at putting a modern spin on traditional Indian food! We ordered the chicken skewers with yogurt and herbs as a starter. They were tasty, but a bit on the dry side. The main courses however, were excellent. The biryani was really tasty and well presented, and the coconut chicken curry was full of flavor and cooked perfectly - it was definitely the highlight of the meal! We were there yesterday for only the appetizers and per their recommendation we got the bbq chicken with cheese on top. It was about $15.55. The chicken was firm and tasted bland (only mustard-ish). Not what I was expecting. It's was true dampener. I have never really had an unpleasant eating experience in Toronto so it came as a shock it didn't turn out as per the high reviews. I would not give a single star because I didn't get the food I ordered. We ordered Biryani and naan tonight from uber eats but what we received was dal and rice enough for just one person.The package did not even have a label on top, it had a small post-it with a name , that was not ours. The driver confirmed that the package was given by the restaurant, but when we called the restaurant, they blamed it on uber and did nothing to help. All they had to offer was a promise to call after discussing with manager. We received a call from them, after a long time,informing that they will not deliver our order though Uber would provide refund. Mediocre at best. We had an 845pm reservation and didn't get our food until 1015pm! It was quite a long wait for 3 dishes, and the staff kept apologizing but we still had to endure the wait. My wife, sister and I were in Toronto doing touristy things. We just finished our walk through the Toronto Zoo and Ripley's aquarium. We were tired and we were hungry. Very hungry. Craving for Indian food we decided to get away from all the restaurants at Union Station, get on the subway and off at Davisville. Best Decision Ever! Atmosphere (4/5): The place looks trendy, upon entrance we were greeted immediately, and seated in another few minutes. The place and the furniture looked new with ample ambient lighting. I didn't give it a 5/5 on decor simply because my rear would have been better on a cushion seat rather than on a steel chair after 3 days of walking around the city. Food: (5/5) - 5 stars doesn't do justice. Starters: Mutton seekh kabab (5/5): As I said, we were hungry. HUNGRY. This is the first item that we got. devoured in minutes. Not only the dish was authentic, it could give a run for their money to most restaurants in New Delhi. The kabab just melts in your mouth. It comes with the green chutney (mint). Fresh. I grew up in Delhi, munching on the variety of food there. I have spent 5 years in US. I think I can tell if the ingredients were fresh or not. Not only was the quality amazing, the quantity was good too. Worth the money. Main Course Awadhi Sabzi (5/5): Mixed vegetables cooked perfectly. Severed in a cute little handi. The dish had texture and you could tell the distinct spices. Lagan Ka Murg (4/5): I went with this dish over butter chicken, because everyone makes butter chicken. I wanted something new. The chicken was very tender, melts in your mouth. The spices were flavorful. The onion and cashew base in the gravy is a winning combination. I couldn't taste the saffron though. Must be because I was so hungry, I preferred gulping down food rather than chewing. Garlic Naan (3.5/5): We ordered 3 garlic naan. The sizes were perfect. 1 naan for 1 person. The naan was a little dry for me. Nice quantity of garlic - which I always like, and the naan itself was soft. But I am used to garlic naan that has a coat of butter, this one did not. Maybe I should have specified while ordering butter garlic naan instead of just garlic naan. Kulcha - Butter (5/5): Reminds you of your childhood time in Delhi. Enough said. Dawat-e-Murg (5/5): This dish was a masterpiece. Words cannot describe it and 5 stars or points cannot do justice. This dish probes your senses, it's aromatic, it has a unique texture, it's flavorful and it's how Indian food is supposed to be. I would go out on a limb and say this touches your soul. There has been a total of 5 restaurants in India, Lithuania, US, and now Canada where I have left a separate tip as a token of appreciation to the chef. This was the 5th one. This dish doesn't only gives Indian restaurants in India / US / Canada a run for their money, but it puts Khau Gully firmly in front and in a class of it's own. Desert Kesar Malai Firni (4/5): I am a Bengali, cannot go without ending my Indian food with Indian sweet dish. This is served in a near authentic clay pot (kullardh). Sides Sweet Lassi (5/5): Again masterful, and not watered down to increase profits like many Indian restaurants do. Onion Salad (4/5): While having Indian food, especially mutton/chicken it's common practice in India to order sliced red onions, lime, green chilies and dried mango powder (amchur) depending on your region. The waiter said that they don't have red onions but white onions. I am glad that the white onion had the fizz that go up your nostril and make you cry a little. Service (5/5): The restaurant did an excellent job in service. The waiters were courteous, and from the same area in New Delhi where I used to live. The owner - Abhishek comes around to every table and engages Khau Gully's guests in meaningful conversation. It's always good to see that the owner not only knows his or her stuff, but also takes a keen interest in getting feedback from customers. One negative (if you could call it that), was that I was charged $2.50 for slices of onion. Now I paid over $100 for the dinner bill, 20% as a tip for service, and an additional $20 for the chef, but that $2.50 charge for onions - I believe shouldn't be there, and the onions should be free. As it is customary in India. Overall, this restaurant is a force to reckon with. Forget Brampton, Mississauga, Scarborough, even New Delhi restaurants. Take the trip to Khau Gully, you will remember it. We will be back again in 2 weeks to try some of the other dishes on the menu. read more

I got the shrimps tawa and and butter chicken and wow... there are no word, to describe my disappointment in the weird smell and texture of the food. The chicken was also very dry. My boyfriend and I came here unexpectedly when we were shopping around Davisville. We were greeted by the host and he walked us through the menu because it was our first time here and the dishes were foreign to us. We ordered the lamb chops, butter chicken, plain roti, garlic & butter naan, and basmati rice. We really liked the lamb chops which came with two sauces but we barely used them since they were so flavourful. The butter chicken + naan + roti combination was to die for - probably don't need the garlic & butter naan ($4) since the plain naan was about half the price and equally as delicious when dipped in the butter chicken sauce. Went there last week, and this place does Rock. Never have I had a Chicken Curry wrapped up in an egg omelette, in a rich gravy. The deserts were just dreamy and the texture of the Khulfi left your mouth totally dancing a new tune. A must place to visit and try their Khulfi for sure. read more

During a family lunch our mother slipped and fell on the slippery and greasy restaurant floor that had absolutely no warning signs and was not "mopped for two days." (direct quote from owner) She suffered head trauma/ injury and required immediate medical attention that left her in the emergency room under extensive monitoring for internal bleeding and needed several stitches to her left temple. She was profusely bleeding and barely conscious on the floor for almost half an hour before paramedics finally showed up. We want to thank the owner's daughter for her calm and diligence in assisting with first aid for our mother. However, the owner of the restaurant had the audacity to say that "they were being very patient, considerate and empathetic in spite of the uncouth and condescending behaviour" we showed them?! What a thing to say to a family in this situation! He himself showed absolutely no compassion or regards for the seriousness of the situation. We could tell because he rolled his eyes at us!While my mother was lying in a pool of blood on the floor, he walks into the restaurant hysterically and emotionally asking to take the conversation outside without a single concern about what had happened. The owner IMMEDIATELY and vehemently denied taking any responsibility and came to the conclusion on the spot that he was not at fault even though he refused to examine camera footage, ask us what happened, and even tried to intimidate a witness who was there for a job interview! Add insult to injury, the owner asks the witness about his interview and the details of it while this was unraveling. Moreover, while my mother was being carried out on the stretcher by paramedics, the owner was repeatedly yelling at my brother who was understandably upset. The owner verbally attacked our father while he was attending to my mother saying "discipline your son" and that "he should shut up" and more! All while begging that we remain respectful with him. The owner even approached the paramedics to pry about her general state and her consciousness while they refused to comment and became upset. The owner's daughter assured us that they would not be "running away from the responsibility" and would take care of everything because "they are a good family." The owner ignored my brother's text message asking him wether he would be willing to pay the medical bill after he was asked to update him. My brother was forced to follow up a day later only to have the owner tell him to "go through insurance." Seeing the lack of empathy and support by this owner is absolutely appalling. I hope this review changes someone's mind from going to Khau Gully because that could've been your mother. read more

The Vegetarian appetizer platter (Kebab Thal) was a good option to try out all the appetizers (Tandoori Broccoli FTW). The Veg. Dum Biryani was pretty good, balance of spice and flavor. The desserts were the highlight. The Green Pista Kulfi, Gulab Jamun Cheesecake, Rasmalai and Malai Phirni were all great. Oh and yes the Lemon Mint drink was great. Ordered a murg Tikka lazeez a(chicken dish)garlic naan. The murg Tikka had chicken which was very tough and very chewy when this was brought to the notice of the server, the owner came to table and tells that it's red meat and hence tough ( wow he runs the place and doesn't know it's white meat actually) on further discussion he said he would show it to his chef. This time around his retort was that it's a leg piece hence it's like that. ( Leg pieces are supposed to be far more juicy ) either way he wasn't willing to accept there was anything wrong with the dish . Also the portion sizes are very small. They also rushed us to order our last order within 15 mins of walking in at 21:45 but continued accepting new entrants till later. Talk about double standards eh ! read more

Had a very tasty meal in this small airy low key restaurant. We had the masala padad as starter. Then we had the chicken Alishan kebab which was delicious and tender and then had the dawat e Murgh. This was in a tomato based gravy with tender white meat. The nan was so good and thinner than usual. I have food sensitivities to preservative and usually have digestive problems with saucy food but I had no problems eating here. We will certainly return. read more

I've eaten at Khau Gully a couple of times. Many of the dishes are pretty standard from what you would expect from an Indian place in Toronto. The Butter Chicken is great, not too sweet and full of flavour. The Tandoori chicken is juicy and moist and well seasoned with the marinade sticking to it more like a glaze ... definitely one of the best takes on this dish. My favorite thing on this menu is the Chicken Biryani. It's served in a casserole dish and topped with dough to keep the steam and flavours inside the dish. When it comes to the table it's really impressive to have it opened in front of you. read more
