I was a bit disappointed to see that the menu was a bit different from what was on the liciousTO website, but nevertheless enjoyed our food. Stopped in for a nice lunch with my wife and really enjoyed it. We started with the sweet potato and zucchini pakora and haryali kebab. Both were very good. The combination of vegetables in the pakoras gave them a unique but delicious taste. The kebab were stuffed with paneer and also very good. For mains we order malai kofta and dal makhni with garlic naan. Our server told us the kofta was a little on the sweet side but suggested it could be made savoury if we preferred. We did that it was great. Best malai kofta I have had in some time. Dal was excellent also. For desert we shared the rasmalai tiramisu which was excellent. Dined for Summerlicious lunch and it was a good experience located right at Shops at Don Mills . We each tried the bao, fried okra and calamari to start. Then we had the lamb curry and butter chicken bowl and finished with gajjar halwa cheesecake and rasmalai tiramisu. Overall I think it's good value for $27 for lunch. We got a fair bit to try along with a generous portion of naan too. For my main, I only tasted the lamb curry, the meat a bit too dry for me, however the sauce is good. The okra fries are good, the calamari and bao was ok from the little sample I tried from my friends' plate. What really was special was the dessert, as most Summerlicious spots I had this season only had the most basic cheesecake format. At least this spot elevated it and certainly not a regular cheesecake or tiramisu I've had before. I think the Gajjar halwa cheesecake was a bit too sweet for me. I wouldn't say this is the authentic Indian food, you usually get that at a mom & pop spot at somewhere not as clean, but this was good for an upscale place. Came back for some great food. And this time, we 'Trust the chef'. It came with lots of food and was lots of fun! For a price (75) you get 4 courses per person, most items are on the menu, but most items we got were things we would never have ordered! Feta naan - very heavy on the cheese, not my favourite. Mango sauce was refreshing, especially from the heaviness of the cheese naan. Samosa in special sauce - Refer to pics, this was a fun dish and dont think it was on the menu. It was may favourite dish tho. Lots of things happening. Lots of flavour but still very well balanced. Lots of textures from the pop of the pomegrante, crispy samosa, softness from the inside and the sauces. Would get again and would highly recommend! Tiger shrimps - MASSIVE shrimps. Lots of flavour and very tasty. I felt it was abit overcooked, so not my favourite. Butter chicken - Delicious as always. Lamb curry - Lamb was tender, curry was a bit too spicy for me. But might be good if you like the spice. Veggie Briyani - Fave place for the briyani as it always come with a bread topping. It serves as extra naan for the curry you get on the side. Rice was also beautifully cooked. I do perfer the lamb version more as it add more flavour! An assortment of breads - Onion flatbread, garlic naan and parata all was good in their own way. Flatbread was good, but would have preferred to have it by itself. The other two are a staple and especially good with the curries. We have been here twice and both times had very delicious good. We were a larger group the first time and we had the "trust the chef" course and it was A LOT of food. We had the spinach and truffle naan (MY FAV), dhokla chaat, gobi manchurian for appetizers. None of these disappointed! Main course: vegetable biryani (not a huge fan), palak paneer, dal makhani, and purple aloo gobi (def another fav). Desserts: kulfi, tiramisu and gulab jamun. The second time around, I also tried the chicken 65 and it was very delicious! The portion sizes are decent and definitely very filling. Downsides: There is barely any service. Came here with a group of 3 in the summer. Both the patio and the inside dining room was pretty empty but we weren't seated right away. First red flag. We decided to do the summerlicious menu but of the items we ordered they had ran out? So disappointing. We didn't understand because they weren't even busy. As the patio started to fill up our food came out very slowly. There were tables that were seated after us that were served before us. And finished their summerlicious meal and paid before us. During the entire night we asked the waitress to check on our food about 3 times. It was ridiculous. And she was annoyed we asked even though we spent 3 hours on the patio till it got dark because the food wasn't coming out. They also never came around to fill our water. The food itself wasn't good either. Extremely salty and not balanced. I was so disappointed from the entire experience. Terrible service and too salty food. At the end of our long ass meal because of the fact it was dragged out with such a long wait for our food and bad service, we were met with stink faces from the waitress when she saw the tip we had left for her terrible service. We come here often when we are craving some good indian food. the seating area is nice, beautiful place, free parking and it's nice to walk around shops at don mills after the meal or before. The biriyani is one of our favourite, it comes with a naan on top covering the bowl. The lamb curry dishes are good as well. The service is not bad. The only downside is that the price is a bit high. We walked in on a Saturday because all the hotspots were jam packed - what a blessing in disguise! The ambiance is beautiful, the wait staff is friendly and patient, there is a lot of good variety and the food is tasty and pretty. I had lunch at Mantra during Summerlicious. I ordered calamari, butter chicken and tiramisu. A few bites into dessert I got violently ill, vomitting. I let who I believe to be the manager know when I got back to my table. He told me no one else got sick. He gave me a fizzy drink to settle my stomach, but that was the end of the conversation. He presented me with my bill, I paid and left shortly thereafter. I didn't even make it back to my car before I got wobbly and needed to sit down in the plaza courtyard. I like what the restaurants have done with the outdoor seating at shops at don mills. They closed off one street to extend their seats and included a pedestrian walkway. Good plan for the summer! Our plan initially was to go to Joeys or Taylors Landing but didn't want to wait long so we ended up at Mantra. The food was really good, every dish was super flavourful. So, here's the thing with me. I was a pescatarian for close to 10 years of my life and was always disappointed that I never loved Indian food because they have so much variety of vegetarian dishes. This is the first time I've eaten Indian food that I actually ENJOYED! The food here is top notch. Super flavourful and tasty. Everything I tried was just amazing. I don't remember the names of all the dishes we got but there was a chana/sweet potato app we got that I loved. The naan - sooo good! Butter chicken - omg yes. The roadside curry chicken was the best. I really can't wait to go back with a group of people again just so I can try more than one dish. I've been to this place a couple of times. The food was very good the first time but wasn't that good when I visited again a month back from now. They def need to work on their curry selection. I asked them to bring whatever was best they had and what they came with was super super bland. When I mentioned it didn't even have salt, they took back, made the typical tadka and made it just spicy and gave me back. Not what I was expecting. The outdoor seating is pretty darn good, especially if the weather is good. The area around adds to the beautiful ambiance. Their service is good but I wouldn't expect anything less given the high prices. I'd give them one more chance and may come here again but they need to work on their curry really. The owners are the same as the Host The inside is beautiful- it looks very luxe, the open kitchen is on the 2nd floor and the bar area is nice. Came here with a group of people so we tried a few apps to share. I think the apps are where they go more fusion and the mains are more traditional. They had biryani arancini bombs - pass. It was quite dry and crumbly. But the main - chicken biryani was actually pretty good. Good spice level, flavorful, good amount of chicken The tandoori momos and Chicken 65 were hits. The flavour was nice, the only thing to improve on was the meat filling, the meat can be a little more moist and juicy. I find it a little dry now. Went here for lunch with a couple of friends. Overall atmosphere and decor in this restaurant is nice. Would definitely say it looks quite fancy in there, but could probably still be a casual/upscale place to eat. I think that the food was overall good, but just too expensive for what you're getting. I think you can find some of these dishes at other places for less, but still just as good. The cauliflower and jackfruit tacos were delicious, I wish there were more when it came out. We were a group of three and ordered a bunch of food, but these two were our favourites I think. We never know what to order when it comes to Indian food. There is so many wonderful dishes to choose. Luckily the waitress was very helpful with her suggestions and also had a good sense of humour. During the COVID-19 pandemic, I find myself wanting chai. I called Mantra and they said it'd be ready for pickup in 5 min. As I whip out my credit card, the guy says it's on the house! Just like that, I got a free chai. I've tried ordering delivery from them before and I can attest to their lamb korma's quality - yet this was a whole other level of service. Visited July 27 for dinner. The place was 30% full on a Sat night, not sure why it wasn't busier. The portion size was far too small for this price. Lots of parking at Shops at Don Mills. Autogratuity of 18% for parties 6 or more. Pros Jackfruit cigars $14 came with 4 pieces. Tandoori chicken $22 for four pieces and did not include any other sides. Cons The Royal Putkani Kofta $19 was very small, it had only 4 pieces. Not to be confused with Kafta which is what we thought we were ordering. The room gets very smokey, not sure if this is intentional or not. Protip - You can ask to view the 2nd floor where you can glimpse at the chef's in action. This was only the second time in my life trying Indian food at a restaurant and it was fantastic! Everything we tried was freshly made and piping hot, straight from the kitchen. 3.5 star rating. A bit torn whether to decide to enter 4 or 3 star, but since the value isn't great, I'd have to go with the 3. Mantra is a really nice space. Huge ceilings, nice decor and great plating with ornate dishes. Before I speak about the not-so-great value, it has to be said that the nice atmosphere and it's location is likely worked into the price of the food. Chicken 65 seems to be a winner anywhere I go, and here it was no different. They do a slightly different take than I've seen before as they seemed to incorporate a yogurt into it. The chicken biryani was great...the biryani bombs not so much as they lacked taste. The butter chicken baos were fairly good. The butter chicken in them was very good, and it's not as though it conflicted with the baos but it didn't seem to elevate it either. If memory serves me correct, we ordered the chicken dansik which I quite enjoyed. We also ordered a dal dish and a few orders of naan. More hits than misses, and this hits were quite good. One thing I, and it seems other reviewers have a challenge with, are the higher prices from what you'd expect for some of the dishes. The chicken biryani for example was quite good - and though it was plated in a unique way, it's hard to accept paying nearly $20 for it. Most dishes also had smaller portions that what you'd be accustomed to - even for the more traditional ones. Overall, it was still a largely enjoyable meal. It's worth a visit and for those who are looking for a little more elegance in an Indian restaurant, you'll find it here. But for some others, it's simply hard to pay more for some dishes you'll find cheaper elsewhere in spite of the valid reasons for the higher cost. read more

When we arrived, it was indeed packed to the brim, except for the very table that they reserved for us. Lucky! Other places I went to this past week complaint about being too full, when clearly they had like 4/5 empty tables for the entire durations that I was there for... this place was legit popular and I can see why! Like oh my, there were an expected large variety of vegetarian and vegan choices for me, so I can see myself coming here over and over again. Any and every item on their menu was made with care and up to standard, not just their mains. I particular enjoyed their aloo ghobli, which is a cauliflower dish, that a lot of crunch to it. Their kale pomegranate salad was totally sizeable! Their sun-dried tomato and basil naan could have had a richer flavour, but it was soft and not chewy at all. Now, this is where I minus a star in their rating. My friend chose their mushroom Marsala, which was beyond her level of heat, so she had a bite, nearly cried, and decided to share the entire dish with all of us. Everyone else had a bite, while I ate more than half of it myself and I gave what I had left of my salad to her, because it was not spicy at all. However, she could only eat half of my kale pomegranate salad, because it was pure leaf and seeds. I, personally, had to constantly wipe sweat off of my forehead, because the heat piled up on me. I think it was mostly at the right spicy level for all of their items and hence why they are quite popular with good reasons. My Indian friends are from the eastern side and they noticed that one of the waiters was from Bengali, so they spoke in Bengalis to him. It was lovely to see such a warm, friendly exchange between 'neighbouring' strangers. The staff frequented our table quite often and when the naan was served, she pointed out to us, that each basket had two servings of naan that we ordered, in order to save room on the table. The menu was missing pepper labelling to mark the level of spiciness for all of their food items. If they had such labelling, my friend would never have had ordered her original mushroom dish and instead opted for my salad or something else instead. She had to personally point this out to one of the managers. Value: 4.5/5 I was very full with every that I had ordered, but it would have been better if naan or rice was included as sides to every mains, instead of them being separately charged for. For me, it was no big deal, but for some of my friends, they ended up having to order a rice just to share their mains with, because they needed something to eat all the sauce with. Cool new Indian restaurant that's opened up at Shops at Don Mills. The space is gorgeous, very upscale, high ceilings, a great spot for a nice dinner. Really is a lovely ambience. Service here is also great. Our server was very attentive, had answers to all our questions, and made recommendations. The food is so-so. The prices are quite steep for what I typically pay for similar quality Indian food so I guess you're paying for location and rent. My friends ordered daal and it was the smallest serving I've ever seen. A couple of hits: tandoori momos & chicken 65. These are also great for sharing. The butter chicken and naan was also good. I paid $16 for the chicken and $4 for one naan cut into 4 pieces. A few misses: biryani arancini bombs (dry and unflavourful), butter chicken bao, and butter chicken poutine. Not sure if I'd go back but it certainly does warrant one visit to try some of their interesting fusion appetizers. Be prepared to pay more than you normally would though! read more
