We got there at 11:30 (they open at 11) and we were waiting in line for about 45 minutes till we ordered. From there, it was about 15 minutes before we got our food and WHOOOO BUDDY! KG BBQ made me do the fat kid happy dance once I saw our food tray!!! We ordered the brisket, pomegranate and za'atar pork ribs, lamb chops, smoked kofta, baladi salad, Egyptian Mac and cheese, and Mediterranean rice. I'll start with the meats, big fan of all of the ones we got! My personal favorite were the ribs. The meats were all on the fatty side, but the flavor profiles on everything were phenomenal. I could probably do without the Kofta next time I go... From a side perspective, the Mac and cheese was the winner for me. The rice was nothing special, and the baladi salad is a middle eastern staple! If you see a line (and there will be one no matter when you go) just know it's worth it! KG's Chef Kareem El-Ghayesh isn't dubbed the "Lamb Ambassador of Texas" for nothing! The lamb dishes are definitely the highlight at KG. Both the chops and shoulders are out of this world. Parking in the lot is hit or miss, but there are plenty street parking options across from the truck. You order, then grab a table outside between the truck and Oddwood, wait, then enjoy! The first time we tried KG, we tired everything - brisket, ribs, lamb, but the lamb stood out the most and that's what we ended up always turning to every time we revisit KG. The lamb bowl is amazing! As sides go, salad is always a good option to cut through all the richness of the meats, potato salad is also good, and get the side of rice if you're not already ordering a rice bowl. Came here after hearing about the newly awarded Bib Gourmand from Michelin from a friend. Egyptian BBQ, now what exactly does that mean? Without giving spoilers it has to do with the owner's journey and his passion for BBQ which really is shown in the quality of food and experience as well. Unique is putting it lightly. Atmosphere: Outdoor seating BBQ spot. Prepare to wait a bit and be accompanied with great crowds and the smell of fresh BBQ. Food: As stated above Egyptian style BBQ which includes the traditional styled BBQ we've come to know and love here in Austin (meats and brisket galore). I dined with a few friends and ended up getting the brisket bowl and "Egyptian cowboy". Both of these dishes are great takes of two cultures coming together. You'll get the meaty BBQ flavor with a mix of the middle eastern inspiration. Personally I loved the mix of Mediterranean rice and Texas styled meats, full of flavor and certainly unique. Egyptian cowboy was basically their take on mac and cheese, again a mix of two great cultures coming together, without one overwhelming one or the other. This was a nice change compared to many of the other central Texas/Austin bbq scene. I have to say, the stand out dishes was not the brisket but rather the lamb chops, the pulled lamb shoulder, the bone in lamb bacon, and the sides. The lamb chops were cooked to about a medium with a good herb seasoning topped, stayed tender and moist and I would say was tied for my favorite items of the day. Their bone in lamb bacon was equally good and had its own unique flavor and was almost more like a pork belly burnt end. Third thing I'd go here for would be that pulled lamb shoulder. Eating that with some pita and some their tahini sauce and pickled onions was the way I thought made it shine. Their Mac and cheese reminded me of a lobster Mac and cheese minus the lobster and it was creamy, cheesy and stayed good even when cooled down a little. Their potato salad was also out of this world and I'd say is the best in town. While all of those items were fantastic and if that's all they served, it would be 5 stars but their brisket to me felt like it just didn't hit on its own. Their bbq sauce is unique and definitely helped to elevate their brisket but it lacked on smoke penetration and bark. It was well seasoned and cut a bit too thick. The service was nice but it's a food truck so I can't say it's out of this world but it works. The ambiance was nice when we got there, people were friendly and everyone was chatting and looking at each other's tables asking what was ordered and what they all thought of their selections. What was also nice was the various sauces that came with some of the meat choices. Their chimichurri was great and had a little bit of heat to it which went well with all of the cuts my friends and I had. The rice has a mix of nuts and raisins which add so much great flavor and crunch. The salad is a mix of tomato, cucumber, red onion and dressing / vinaigrette - so refreshing and yummy! The rice pudding is great - an absolute must! We love it. We ordered Togo and food came out pretty quickly once we told them we ordered online. I love that they are doing their own spin on BBQ, but the meat lacked flavor, so a bit disappointed. The mac and cheese was just okay. The Cardamom pistachio pudding was probably my favorite out of the whole meal. The service was nice and the food didn't take terribly long to come out. I've been to KG BBQ twice now and had amazing experiences both times. I will say that going recently, the line was much longer than it used to be but I greatly appreciated that they offered free umbrellas to block the sun! Even though the line is long, the turnaround to get your food is quick and we're able to eat by oddwood brewing which is nice. Must get: anything lamb on the menu. Very different meat from what you usually see at bbq spots so it's worth a try and both the lamb bacon ribs and lamb chops are out of this world packed with flavor. So delicious! I've also had their brisket, which is good but I've had better honestly and their brisket rice bowl which I really liked especially with the pomegranates. Overall, KG BBQ is a must go! read more

I've been circling this place for awhile, but was deterred by the line (sometimes that's a good sign). Here's the breakdown after one committed visit: The line appeared acceptable (hitting the near corner of the fence) around 1:30pm on a Friday, so we jumped in. Over an hour later, we arrived at the counter, and about half the menu was sold out. No matter, some great items remained. My friend ordered their much renowned Brisket Bowl and I was too hungry to decide so ordered everything else. After ordering, food took another 30+ minutes to arrive. The Pomegranate Glazed Pork Ribs were moist and the seasoning is truly unique with excellent BBQ sauce. Looking forward to trying the Lamb Chops next time (on a MUCH slower day). The Lamb Shoulder is like a pulled pork but more lamby, unfortunately a little dry. The Egyptian Baladi Salad with Feta was fresh & beautiful, tasting of the Mediterranean. Not so impressed with the Mac n Cheese but that's not why we're here so goals for next time are more lamb & Kofta. After all, took over 2 hours on the dining experience, so this was not for the faint of heart. KG bbq had a pop up at Axelrad in Houston and I decided to give them a try. They had recently been awarded a Michelin bib gourmand and are from Austin, so I thought I should go since I won't be going to Austin that often. They specialize in Egyptian style bbq with a Texas twist, which is a version that you would rarely find anywhere. I was sad to find out that they didn't bring their whole menu, as I wanted to also try their pomegranate and zaatar glazed pork ribs, Mac and cheese, and pitas. I got the brisket and lamb rice bowls, a lamb chop, and the pink buttermilk potato salad. The rice bowls came with baladi salad (tomato, cucumber, red onion), tahini, candied nuts, and pomegranate seeds. The veggies and nuts added a more crunchy texture and made it taste more fresh. However, I thought it was the meat that was lacking in the rice bowls. The brisket was cubed and I thought it was a little tough and lacking in flavor. The lamb shoulder was also a little tough but did have a lot of flavor. My favorite part of the meal was definitely the lamb chop. They seasoned it soo well. The meat was very tender and they provide a chimichurri sauce and onions to eat with the lamb chop. The potato salad had roasted beet puree, fresh dill, jalapeños, and celery. It tastes similar to a regular potato salad, except more creamy and less of the tangy taste. When I first came, there were 2 lines, one for walk ins and one for preorders. I was a walk in but was led to the preorder line. They understood the mistake and let me order. I waited 1 hour and 45 minutes just to get to the front to order. Wanted to leave an updated review since I've been here a few times since my last review. My family was in town so I wanted them to try out KG BBQ and I'm so glad I brought them here. We came on a Saturday around 1:30 and I will say the line was a little crazy but they agreed it was well worth it when they tried the food. Since the food truck is right next to a pizzeria/brewery lots of people will go inside and order a beer to drink while they wait it line. We ordered a bunch of everything and there wasn't a single miss. Our favorites were the smoked lamb chops and the pomegranate ribs. So so good. All of the sides are fantastic too. You really can't go wrong here! They have a good amount of outdoor picnic bench seating and once we did get our order in, it only took about ten minutes for our food to come out. We arrived on a Saturday around 2pm thanks to some tips from other reviews that suggested a later arrival to avoid the longer lines. In our case, they were spot on. We got in line with only 3-4 people in front of us and they still had the full menu available. The staff was super helpful with answering our newbie questions and helped guide us to things they thought we would like. After ordering, we were able to easily find a table on the patio and waited for our food. The food arrived and it was good. The staff recommended that we try the bowls to get a fair sampling of things and that is what we did. I had the lamb, and my Wife chose brisket for her protein. I do wish that my lamb had a more well.... lamb flavor to it. Having had some fantastic lamb in my past, I was really hoping to relive that taste. If I am being honest, if it weren't for the textural difference, I wouldn't have been able to tell it apart from my Wife's brisket. My Wife's brisket was okay as well. It wasn't "stop what you are doing right now and go get some" good, but it was good. Other than that nitpick though, the bowls were good. Well seasoned, and the rice really was the star of that bowl. The sides we chose were the Egyptian mac and cheese and the rice pudding for dessert. The mac and cheese was okay, and the rice pudding was my choice for the stand out of the meal. Luckily, the line seemed to be about consistent with what others have said. We showed up on a Saturday at 12 and waited about 30 mins or so in line (with food coming out about 5 mins later. I ordered the shredded lamb bowl along with the special smoked tri tip. I was also able to try the brisket as well. For the most part, the tri tip and brisket were good, but nothing you can't get at any other bbq spot around town (and I would most likely not come back for). The lamb though...that was a total game changer. The amount of flavor that is packed into this meet can not be compared to anything else. Looking back, I wish I ordered all of the lamb options just to try it all different forms. If you are looking for regular bbq, there are probably other spots, but if you are coming for the Egyptian flavors, this is it! read more

We showed up yesterday (Sunday) and they were already out of 1/3 of the meats at 1pm. The line was long, but it wasn't a killer. I think we waited about 30 minutes. I heard they had good brisket so while it was sold out by the 1/2 pound, they still had it chopped to go on their Cowboy Mac and Cheese. This is of course the classic "meat on mac and cheese" with the Egyptian twist. I thought it was quite tasty and they know their meats. The only downside as that it seemed a little too wet or oily. The BBQ sauce is also a nice change. I am from out of town so I am not sure when I will be back, but I will be sure to stop by again. Really great place! I really enjoyed it. There were sooo many flavors. The place is a little food truck, but seating is all around. The line is long, but it is worth the wait! The service was really kind and quick. The bowl was just beautiful looking and so good. Giving it a 4/5 instead of 5 because I got the kofta rice bowl, and the meat itself was t as flavorful as I was expecting. Still really good, I just think I would try the brisket next time. We ordered the brisket, bacon lamb ribs, kebab chicken, and lamb shoulder. Each one was great, but the bacon lamb ribs stole the show. I don't usually go for lamb, but these changed my mind. Unreal. We also tried several sides: mac & cheese, rice, potato salad, and the house salad. Honestly, I never go for rice, but theirs was so delicious it ended up being one of my favorite parts of the meal. The mac & cheese was rich and creamy, and the potato salad had a perfect balance of tang and texture. To drink, we had the hibiscus mint tea--super refreshing, especially in the brutal Texas heat (and even better if you're a little hungover). The service was fast, which is a major plus compared to the hour-long waits you get at other BBQ joints. The vibe is super laid-back and relaxed, even in the sweltering summer heat. They've got misting fans outside to keep things cool, and there's an indoor space with A/C if that's more your speed. The indoor area doubles as a food and beer hall, giving it a fun, communal feel. We decided to try a few things: 1/2 lb of sumac & cinnamon lamb shoulder, smoked kofta (ground beef and lamb), and "Egyptian mac n cheese" (smoked mac and cheese with a rich bechemel, tomato garlic sauce, and fresh basil). Everything was pretty good! I'm not sure I got much of the sumac and cinnamon on the lamb shoulder, but I enjoyed the cook/smoke on the lamb. I thought the kofta was a bit dry, but when dipped in either their yoghurt or tahini sauces, it was good, too. The mac and cheese and different and interesting - definitely a fun play on a BBQ side classic. The food was really fast (we were there very late on a Saturday afternoon - sort of between meals), and it was a really fun, delicious meal while enjoying some time with family at the brewery. This place is located in the Mueler area of Austin and was walkable from my AirBnB. I remembered seeing this place featured on a BBQ show and thought it was such a unique take it. Food - The meal was a fusion of Arabic food (nut, pomegranate, cucumber, etc) and BBQ. Everything was so tasty! Meats were tender and flavorful. The rice was one of the best I've had. It is on the sweeter side but I enjoyed it. Service - Quick! I sat down inside Oddwell Brewing and a few minutes later, the buzzard thing went off. Ambiance - I ordered from a food truck outside so this is as expected. It was hot. Thank goodness it's okay to eat everything inside Oddwell, especially with a newborn with me. Overall great. I am shocked this is the first time I have had Egyptian BBQ because the way KG BBQ accomplished this fusion was amazing. I'm truly surprised there are not more spots that are doing this. For four hungry people, we had the... - Half Rack of Lamb Chops - This is a must. It was pretty Amazing. Would maybe even consider a full rack and skip out on the brisket next time. - Pink Buttermilk Potato Salad - Very unique with he Roasted Beat Puree, we loved it! - Egyptian Baladi Salad - I feel like you have to get this to balance the meal with some fresh veggies! - Mediterranean Rice - I liked having the rice on the side - Some yoghurt and Pita - Which I ordered on the side separately - Sumac & cinnamon lamb shoulder - Was also fantastic - Specialty Sausage of the Day - Solid - Brisket - Tasted like your classic Texan Brisket, the other dishes were more of the stars of the show. We dined in on a Thursday around 4-5pm, got lucky and had virtually no line. Service was quick, but not very personable with my friend and I. Cashier was very friendly with the person in front and even walked through each item, thank god for eavesdropping lol My friend got a beer and I ordered the hibiscus mint tea (not pictured). We sat in the very busy indoor to avoid the heat. The vibes were very much young families trying to lay off steam after work and trendy influencers getting content... We chose to get a half pound of brisket and pork ribs, and a single lamb bone. A cup of each of the sides, except the rice- which now I regret not trying, it looked really great. Mint Hibiscus tea 8/10, sweet and refreshing. $5 for a 12oz was pushing it though I personally enjoyed all of the sides and the bbq sauce was a favorite. There was a hint of cinnamon in the sauce, very different from traditional bbq but well executed. The baladi salad was light and refreshing, a bit heavy on a cumin taste. 7/10 The pink potato salad was tasty and the serving was more than plenty to share 8.5/10 The Mac n Cheese was my favorite, super unique taste but it just worked together 9/10 Brisket was nice and juicy, tender and perfectly seasoned 10/10 Pork ribs were sooo good, falling off the bone and the pomegranate glaze omg 10/10 Lamb chop had great flavor, but was extra chewy.. 7/10 Overall, I'd recommend to other friends who are into spices to try it at least once. Probably would not bring any picky eaters here or that are a "plain burger" type of person. I came with a foodie friend and was surprised to hear he felt it was a bit heavy on spice. Second time at KG BBQ and still obsessed! We got the pomegranate-glazed pork ribs, smoked lamb chops with chimichurri, Egyptian baladi salad, and Mediterranean rice. The meat was cooked perfectly--so tender and flavorful. I really loved the pomegranate glaze--sweet, tangy, and super unique. The chimichurri on the lamb was herby and fresh, a great match with the smokiness. The sides were awesome too. The saffron rice with nuts and pomegranate was so good, and the salad was super fresh--nice balance to the heavier meats. It was crowded so we waited about 40 minutes in line, but once we ordered, the food came out fast. Seating was comfy and the whole vibe was worth the wait. Already planning our next visit! read more

I've been wanting to try this Egyptian/Texan fusion that is KG BBQ for a while! My mom and I watched Kareem on the Netflix show, Great American BBQ Showdown, so when she was in town visiting me I thought it was the perfect time to go. It was a rainy day so I was hoping that would deter the crowds when they opened at 11. I was correct! The line was super short and we ordered some pork ribs, brisket rice bowl, cup of mac and cup of potato salad. There's plenty of seating inside, covered and uncovered outside at Oddwood Ales. Service was quick and friendly and we were on our way back home. The show stopper (okay there's multiple) was the brisket rice bowl. It's beautiful and has unique flavors that mesh so well together. Their bbq sauce served on the side is thin and tasty. The potato salad with beet puree was another of our favorites. The mac was very savory and has a bit of a tomato base. Everything was super different and interesting. I was looking forward to the pomegranate pork bbq ribs, but unfortunately I ended up throwing them out. They were very tough and not very edible. Hopefully it was just an off day, but I'm glad I was finally able to try this place. read more

Love the Egyptian middle eastern take on Texas bbq!! It was so good! We were lucky enough to get there before the rush and I mean the line was WRAPPED around. The food truck is next to a brewery and the seating area is quite small but we were able to share one end of a picnic table with others. The parking for me could've been a huge headache since it was such a tight squeeze to move around with traffic. We ordered the Egyptian Mac n cheese, lamb rice bowl, sumac & cinnamon lamb shoulder, and can't forget the Egyptian ice ahwa. The lamb meats had the perfect savory and spice flavor balance, tender and melt in your mouth moist. Was not a fan of the Mac and cheese, the acidity was just too high with the tomatoes in it. The most disappointing was the ahwa - I was expecting a robust and vibrant flavor with hints of cardamom or cinnamon but it was so watered down and barely any coffee flavor. Overall, the BBQ is well worth it and that's the main point. read more

Cute little food truck Outside of a brewery. Ordered a bowl with lamb and brisket. Loved all the nuts, cucumber, onions, pomegranate, and sauce that gave a freshness. They did not skimp on the meat, and it was perfect bite sized pieces. Service was excellent too - I'd had an issue with my online order (wrong date on accident) and they made it for me same day anyway. Also got mac though it was a bit on the mushy side but nice flavor. read more
