Let me preface this by stating that I adore Mediterranean and North African spices/flavors. This was an absolute grand slam of a spot - as with all Austin BBQ spots, do like the locals and order your meal ahead online and skip the inevitable long lines to just pick up your order at the appropriate time. We decided to go full on lamb focused with our order and seriously, no regrets. We had the lamb ribs, shredded lang shoulder, lamb chops and then for funsies also ordered the chicken thighs and pork ribs. The shredded lamb was just spectacular. Spiced deliciously, and with the green relish and pickled onion it was a bite that was 10/10. The lamb rib was also great - very tender but also very fatty. Some parts were chewy but again, still delicious. The lamb chops were HUGE compared to most lamb chops and I think that is why it was a chewier bite than the others. Again, delicious but not as tender as the others. Seating is outdoors and not super plentiful but tables turn over relatively quickly. I will state outright that this is NOT in any way comparable to the taste of other "Texas bbq" spots that get a lot of hype. This place is the primary reason I came to Austin. Saw this guy on a BBQ competition and had to try his place. It's located in a parking lot partnered with a brewery thus you have some place to sit. Unfortunately Chef wasn't there upon arrival but the line certainly was. Ordered half pork ribs, half lamb bacon ribs, 1 lamb chop and side of rice, side of salad and the hibiscus iced tea. Iced tea should've ordered like 3, was perfectly sweetness. Came with side of yogurt sauce, tahini, chimmichurri and some onions. Pork ribs - excellent sauce but felt like they were taken off the smoker a bit early. Meat didn't come off the bone easily. Lamb bacon ribs, tad disappointed in the seasoning, flavor was unique but not very forward. However meat was very soft. Lamb chop - well executed, nicely seasoned. Unsure if it was an off day or not but honestly this visit was not it. We were one of the first people in line (arrived at 10:40AM). There's not a whole lot of shade near the truck itself but staff provided umbrellas to those waiting in line. Unsure if they do this every time or not but I think it was a super nice gesture and makes sure everyone stays nice and cool. Upon getting our food we noticed we were missing a lamb chop, we went back to the window and staff gave us one pretty quickly. Now this part is partially on us too as we didn't notice we were also missing our rice pudding. I feel a bit frustrated that we came early and they were not as thorough. The Mac and cheese is standard, not terrible but not amazing. The baladi salad is sooooooo good, i honestly wish I would have gotten more to take home. It's simple but so refreshing and helps to cut through the fattiness of the meats. My SIL And I both got a pita, I got the lamb and she got the chicken. Her pita was good but didn't have the salad on top(unsure if it comes with salad on top or not but it tasted better with it). The chicken had a nice Smokey flavor that was further highlighted by the yogurt sauce. It was soooooo good. Would recommend getting this item. The lamb pita was... not great. When I picked it up my hands were covered in grease. The top half with the salad and yogurt sauce was great but the bottom half was filled with so much grease. I poured the grease into my bowl and it covered the bottom. The lamb for this first piece wasnt too bad but a little more on the dry side. Somehow the second piece had even more grease than the first one. I ripped a small piece off of the bottom of the pita and the grease came flooding out. To top it all off the lamb was so dry which is wild how something can be that dry when it's swimming in so much grease . It was rough and chewy, I just couldn't finish it. Which is a shame because the pita, sauce, and salad were super good The ribs were also not that great, which I remember really liking them on my first visit here. It could have been the piece I got but the meat was so dry and chewy. The first time I tried them the meat was so moist and had a slightly sweet flavor. The lamb chop was good, it was on the medium rare side so if you don't like rarer meat maybe skip this one. The brisket was good but on the fattier side. This is by far the best fusion barbecue place I have ever eaten at. There were so many items to choose from, but the Pomegranate and Za'atar Glazed Pork Ribs are the top sellers. Unfortunately, the lamb chops were sold out by the time we arrived around 1 PM, so the owner recommended the Pomegranate and Za'atar Glazed Pork Ribs instead. For a party of three, we ordered a variety of dishes that were more than enough for five people. The brisket, Pomegranate and Za'atar Glazed Pork Ribs, and lamb ribs were all incredibly tender and delicious. The Egyptian mac and cheese and pink buttermilk potato salad were good as well, but they could have used a bit more salt or flavor. This is a food truck with outdoor seating, so it's a great place to bring pets. The staff was also nice as recommended all the items that they thought were good for us. You must order these meats in 1/2lb sizing only. The menu also offers Shawarma Pitas, Lamb Ribs, Lamb chops,, Lamb shoulder, chicken kebab and rice bowls. Waiting in line on a busy Saturday was only about 30min. Plenty of outdoor seating available with canopy shade & fans from the hot Texas sun. Parking is non existent, so you will likely park in the nearby side streets. The brisket had a lighter flavor to it with a different type of smoke. Brisket was cooked well but just had no bark to it. The pomegranate ribs were tender but not much bark or strong pepper. You can tell there is a different mixture of rub seasoning used besides the typical Texas hard black pepper. Mediterranean rice with the nuts had lack of flavor. I didn't care for the Egyptian mac & cheese at all. Tasted like pasta shells in a tomato cream sauce, that I didn't care for. If you are looking for a unique style of bbq cooking, KG bbq is an excellent option especially with their Lamb offerings/. The menu offers a variety of options you won't see at most bbq joints. I arrived shortly before opening on a weekday and only had a few people in line in front of me (this was a few months ago and may not be the same situation now). I ordered a ton of items on the menu because I wanted to try as much as possible. First off, everything you order here is loaded with great flavor! I'm a sucker for Mediteranean/Middle Eastern food and KG did not disappoint. The lamb chops were juicy, pork ribs were sweet and so tender, pulled lamb was tasty, sausages had great snap, and do not leave without ordering the lamb bacon ribs. MY GOD. Might be the best ribs ever!!! They are tender, savory and sweet, fatty, and I don't how else to describe them. You just need to order them! Oddly enough, while I enjoyed both the fatty and lean brisket, I felt it paled in comparison to the other meat offerings. Probably the best "value" item if you are looking for one item that summarizes KG bbq would be their rice bowls. This was a nice change compared to many of the other central Texas/Austin bbq scene. I have to say, the stand out dishes was not the brisket but rather the lamb chops, the pulled lamb shoulder, the bone in lamb bacon, and the sides. The lamb chops were cooked to about a medium with a good herb seasoning topped, stayed tender and moist and I would say was tied for my favorite items of the day. Their bone in lamb bacon was equally good and had its own unique flavor and was almost more like a pork belly burnt end. Third thing I'd go here for would be that pulled lamb shoulder. Eating that with some pita and some their tahini sauce and pickled onions was the way I thought made it shine. Their Mac and cheese reminded me of a lobster Mac and cheese minus the lobster and it was creamy, cheesy and stayed good even when cooled down a little. Their potato salad was also out of this world and I'd say is the best in town. While all of those items were fantastic and if that's all they served, it would be 5 stars but their brisket to me felt like it just didn't hit on its own. Their bbq sauce is unique and definitely helped to elevate their brisket but it lacked on smoke penetration and bark. It was well seasoned and cut a bit too thick. The service was nice but it's a food truck so I can't say it's out of this world but it works. The ambiance was nice when we got there, people were friendly and everyone was chatting and looking at each other's tables asking what was ordered and what they all thought of their selections. What was also nice was the various sauces that came with some of the meat choices. Really great experience at this Austin icon. Arrived at 12:15pm on a rainy cold Thursday in January and there was no line at all! We were able to order right away, and our food was out within 5 minutes. Incredible. We got a pita and two of their signature rice bowls (one Brisket and one lamb). The bowls were packed with rice, meat, tahini sauce, almonds, cashews, pomegranate seeds and fresh veggies. Almost too much going on, but the flavors were absolutely fantastic. They danced together as well as I could have hoped! With tip I paid about $28 for a relatively small bowl, but I was surprised at how filling it was. We got there at 11:30 (they open at 11) and we were waiting in line for about 45 minutes till we ordered. From there, it was about 15 minutes before we got our food and WHOOOO BUDDY! KG BBQ made me do the fat kid happy dance once I saw our food tray!!! KG's Chef Kareem El-Ghayesh isn't dubbed the "Lamb Ambassador of Texas" for nothing! The lamb dishes are definitely the highlight at KG. Both the chops and shoulders are out of this world. Parking in the lot is hit or miss, but there are plenty street parking options across from the truck. You order, then grab a table outside between the truck and Oddwood, wait, then enjoy! The first time we tried KG, we tired everything - brisket, ribs, lamb, but the lamb stood out the most and that's what we ended up always turning to every time we revisit KG. The lamb bowl is amazing! As sides go, salad is always a good option to cut through all the richness of the meats, potato salad is also good, and get the side of rice if you're not already ordering a rice bowl. Desserts were worth it too, especially the cardamom rice pudding. We'll definitely be back, especially whenever we have out-of-town visitors! read more

Came here after hearing about the newly awarded Bib Gourmand from Michelin from a friend. Egyptian BBQ, now what exactly does that mean? Without giving spoilers it has to do with the owner's journey and his passion for BBQ which really is shown in the quality of food and experience as well. Unique is putting it lightly. Atmosphere: Outdoor seating BBQ spot. Prepare to wait a bit and be accompanied with great crowds and the smell of fresh BBQ. Food: As stated above Egyptian style BBQ which includes the traditional styled BBQ we've come to know and love here in Austin (meats and brisket galore). I dined with a few friends and ended up getting the brisket bowl and "Egyptian cowboy". Both of these dishes are great takes of two cultures coming together. You'll get the meaty BBQ flavor with a mix of the middle eastern inspiration. Personally I loved the mix of Mediterranean rice and Texas styled meats, full of flavor and certainly unique. Egyptian cowboy was basically their take on mac and cheese, again a mix of two great cultures coming together, without one overwhelming one or the other. We ordered the ribs, brisket, rice, salad and rice pudding! It was all so dang good - personally we liked the ribs over the brisket but both were delicious! The rice has a mix of nuts and raisins which add so much great flavor and crunch. The salad is a mix of tomato, cucumber, red onion and dressing / vinaigrette - so refreshing and yummy! The rice pudding is great - an absolute must! We love it. We ordered Togo and food came out pretty quickly once we told them we ordered online. Lots of picnic tables outdoors to eat from - dog friendly too!! Odd wood brewing has some good frozen frose options and beers too. read more

I've been circling this place for awhile, but was deterred by the line (sometimes that's a good sign). Here's the breakdown after one committed visit: The line appeared acceptable (hitting the near corner of the fence) around 1:30pm on a Friday, so we jumped in. Over an hour later, we arrived at the counter, and about half the menu was sold out. No matter, some great items remained. My friend ordered their much renowned Brisket Bowl and I was too hungry to decide so ordered everything else. After ordering, food took another 30+ minutes to arrive. The Pomegranate Glazed Pork Ribs were moist and the seasoning is truly unique with excellent BBQ sauce. Looking forward to trying the Lamb Chops next time (on a MUCH slower day). The Lamb Shoulder is like a pulled pork but more lamby, unfortunately a little dry. The Egyptian Baladi Salad with Feta was fresh & beautiful, tasting of the Mediterranean. Not so impressed with the Mac n Cheese but that's not why we're here so goals for next time are more lamb & Kofta. After all, took over 2 hours on the dining experience, so this was not for the faint of heart. I've been to KG BBQ twice now and had amazing experiences both times. I will say that going recently, the line was much longer than it used to be but I greatly appreciated that they offered free umbrellas to block the sun! Even though the line is long, the turnaround to get your food is quick and we're able to eat by oddwood brewing which is nice. Must get: anything lamb on the menu. Very different meat from what you usually see at bbq spots so it's worth a try and both the lamb bacon ribs and lamb chops are out of this world packed with flavor. So delicious! I've also had their brisket, which is good but I've had better honestly and their brisket rice bowl which I really liked especially with the pomegranates. Overall, KG BBQ is a must go! read more

Wanted to leave an updated review since I've been here a few times since my last review. My family was in town so I wanted them to try out KG BBQ and I'm so glad I brought them here. We came on a Saturday around 1:30 and I will say the line was a little crazy but they agreed it was well worth it when they tried the food. Since the food truck is right next to a pizzeria/brewery lots of people will go inside and order a beer to drink while they wait it line. We ordered a bunch of everything and there wasn't a single miss. Our favorites were the smoked lamb chops and the pomegranate ribs. So so good. All of the sides are fantastic too. You really can't go wrong here! They have a good amount of outdoor picnic bench seating and once we did get our order in, it only took about ten minutes for our food to come out. KG bbq had a pop up at Axelrad in Houston and I decided to give them a try. They had recently been awarded a Michelin bib gourmand and are from Austin, so I thought I should go since I won't be going to Austin that often. They specialize in Egyptian style bbq with a Texas twist, which is a version that you would rarely find anywhere. I was sad to find out that they didn't bring their whole menu, as I wanted to also try their pomegranate and zaatar glazed pork ribs, Mac and cheese, and pitas. I got the brisket and lamb rice bowls, a lamb chop, and the pink buttermilk potato salad. The rice bowls came with baladi salad (tomato, cucumber, red onion), tahini, candied nuts, and pomegranate seeds. The veggies and nuts added a more crunchy texture and made it taste more fresh. However, I thought it was the meat that was lacking in the rice bowls. The brisket was cubed and I thought it was a little tough and lacking in flavor. The lamb shoulder was also a little tough but did have a lot of flavor. My favorite part of the meal was definitely the lamb chop. They seasoned it soo well. The meat was very tender and they provide a chimichurri sauce and onions to eat with the lamb chop. The potato salad had roasted beet puree, fresh dill, jalapeños, and celery. It tastes similar to a regular potato salad, except more creamy and less of the tangy taste. When I first came, there were 2 lines, one for walk ins and one for preorders. I was a walk in but was led to the preorder line. They understood the mistake and let me order. I waited 1 hour and 45 minutes just to get to the front to order. We arrived on a Saturday around 2pm thanks to some tips from other reviews that suggested a later arrival to avoid the longer lines. In our case, they were spot on. We got in line with only 3-4 people in front of us and they still had the full menu available. The staff was super helpful with answering our newbie questions and helped guide us to things they thought we would like. After ordering, we were able to easily find a table on the patio and waited for our food. The food arrived and it was good. The staff recommended that we try the bowls to get a fair sampling of things and that is what we did. I had the lamb, and my Wife chose brisket for her protein. I do wish that my lamb had a more well.... lamb flavor to it. Having had some fantastic lamb in my past, I was really hoping to relive that taste. If I am being honest, if it weren't for the textural difference, I wouldn't have been able to tell it apart from my Wife's brisket. My Wife's brisket was okay as well. It wasn't "stop what you are doing right now and go get some" good, but it was good. Other than that nitpick though, the bowls were good. Well seasoned, and the rice really was the star of that bowl. The sides we chose were the Egyptian mac and cheese and the rice pudding for dessert. The mac and cheese was okay, and the rice pudding was my choice for the stand out of the meal.
