KG BBQ helps make Oddwood Brewing a great addition to the group patio dining options.
I planned a meetup for some friends at KG BBQ this past Friday evening. The first thing to keep in mind is parking. Oddwood Brewing doesn't have enough parking to support their newfound popularity. The parking lot for adjacent businesses has "No Oddwood Parking" signs. I accidentally parked there because I only saw those signs on the side of the lot closest to the building, but there was another one hiding behind a big truck on the side where I parked. Luckily my car didn't get towed, but I won't do that again!
I heard some of the food sells out, so I got there as early as I could after work - 6:00. I think I timed it well, because the line was a reasonable length, and everything was still available. The line got a lot longer a little while later, maybe 6:30 or 7:00, and then shortened again after that, and we saw them crossing things off the menu. I am sometimes weirded out about eating less common meats like lamb, but I was feeling bold, so I figured I should give their food a proper try, and ordered the Lamb Shawarma Pita. I also couldn't pass up trying the Egyptian Mac n Cheese. My sweet tooth has flared up again, so for dessert I ordered the Cardamom & Pistachio Rice Pudding. I wanted the Oum Ali but their website mentioned it was a large serving for two people, and I didn't really want to spend more money and nobody in my group would be likely to split it with me. My husband was working late, so I ordered him a half rack of Smoked Lamb Chops just in case they sold out before he arrived. Altogether this turned out to be a pretty expensive order, about $70, but I guess I haven't bought bbq for two people in a long time.
My friends had started showing up and claimed a picnic table by a mister fan. A few of them got in line to order food. I dug in. Mac and cheese first - I'm a mac and cheese fanatic, and my standards are pretty high. It was good and cheesey, but a little lumpy and gooey. Whatever spices made it "Egyptian" worked with the cheese flavor. The pita sandwich was bigger than I expected, so I didn't fill up on mac and cheese, and turned my attention to the main course. There was so much flavor from the cucumber, tomato, and onion salad on top that I couldn't really tell what the meat tasted like. The texture was fine. It was awkward to eat neatly since the veggies kept falling out, and eventually I washed my hands and ate some of the fillings with a fork. I couldn't finish the whole pita either, but that didn't mean I didn't have room for dessert. I'm so glad I ordered what I did, because it was by far the best part of the meal! On top of the rice pudding was another creamy sweeter layer that might have been whipped cream, a crunchy pistachio topping, and some other crunchy bits I couldn't identify. All the flavors and textures worked so well together, to make this stand out from all the boring scoops of rice pudding I've had in my life. Get the rice pudding! My husband showed up, and ate his lamb chops a while later. He said they tasted amazing even after sitting out a while. It probably helped that it was so hot outside that they didn't cool off too much. My friends didn't comment much on their food, but I could tell they enjoyed it.
Servers from Oddwood Brewing were bussing tables, and one took my acquaintance's beer before he finished it.
The patio at Oddwood Brewing emptied out earlier than I've ever seen a bar empty out on a Friday night. We didn't see what time the food truck closed, but it must have been a little before dark. My husband speculated that it's not really a "weekend bar" but I thought every bar in this town turns into a hot spot on Friday nights, and Austin can't get enough of the brewery patio experience? When we left around 10:30 there were only about 2 other groups still outside.
I'll keep KG BBQ in mind for when I want to plan dinners with friends, especially when they're meat eaters! read more
