What a standout place for the promotion of the superiority of Turkish cooking. Kestane - which means 'chestnut' in Turkish - might seem like a bog standard Arabic kebab place from the outside. That's wrong. For a lesson in the diversity of the cuisine in the Middle East, eat at this place back-to-back from its nearby cousin off the L train, where the proprietors are from Palestine. At Oasis, the pita and hummus are king. Here at Kestane, meat is very much the center of attention here. For $14, the Astana Kebab platter features an embarrassment of meats and salad. There are two succulent kebabs, richly spiced and flame grilled to order. Why is this not available on every block? The other side of the plate is occupied by beet, onion and lettuce salads, all of which are there merely to provide contrast with the protein. Take the rice off the place you have perhaps the most decant Atkins-compliment dinner in history. Here's something completed unexpected - the baba is one of the best I've ever had. It's sweeter and smoother than you usually find it in the Levant, minus any bitterness that sometimes creeps in. My parents and I split a memorable portion with fresh baked bread while waiting for a seat at the next door Greenpoint Seafood Company. This place is no secret - there was a rollicking Seamless and takeout business going on when I stopped in on a weeknight. The hot sauce is really frickin' good. The meats are good, but be prepared for your meat to be about 10% of your dish: the other 90% is white rice, raw onions and shredded ice burg lettuce. I would probably order it again, mostly because it's the only option for this cuisine in the 'hood. But be warned about the lentil soup! There is not a single lentil in it. It tastes like salt and pepper water. It is seriously the worst "soup" I have ever had. Way overpriced for what you're getting and the food is mediocre at best. Their lamb chops are among their worst dishes yet the most expensive. Arrived cold and very chewy. I felt chewing on a bicycle wheel, and the meat had little to no taste at all :( Whichever plate you end up with, 60% of it will be stuffed with lettuce, onions and pickled cabbage, 30% rice, the rest is meat. He said he would send over the right order. But then I received a call from the online delivery service. They said the old man demanded payment for the re-order. So they made me re-order my real order online and then use a couple of gift cards they gave me instantly to pay for it. This all happened over a 2hr period, at around 11pm. I had to change my review from 5 stars to 3 stars, unfortunately. I used to love this restaurant and their food. I predominantly ordered online thru Grubnub and my experience was excellent. But since 2016 or so, this place lowered quality of food and increased the price. I can understand the high rent, etc., etc., but all our local businesses deal with these tough issues. This is not how you get loyal customers (but giving less for more)! I also had a problem with the owner while speaking over the phone. I called to ask why my bill went up significantly and the man just brushed me off in a rude way. The Middle Eastern cuisine for me is not just delicious food, but friendly customer service, warmth, generosity. I am sorry to see this place to go down. As someone famous once said (I afraid it was Lenin.. hey, at least it wasn't Stalin :), when you reject something, you have to offer something else (better). I can recommend these Middle Eastern places in Williamsburg (ordered from cheap to more expensive): Oasis, Kabob Shack, Dar 525 (2 locations), La Goulette. First two are great for quick fast-food-type orders. Dar 525 is probably my favorite right now. It is owned by a Syrian man (I think) and they prepare fantastic food. I got delivery from this place for lunch. The food came on time and the presentation was great. When I started to eat the chicken, I noticed that some parts of it were under cooked. I tried to eat around the questionable parts of the chicken, but ended up getting sick anyway. Please learn how to fully cook your damn chicken. Went to pick it up and the worker just walked away when I asked for my order. The owner walked up and said they wouldn't fulfill the order. I asked why, and he said I didn't order enough. Told me to take it up with Seamless if I wanted a refund. Food is consistent. Tends to run on the bland side. Lentil Soup, kafta kabob, and gyro are the best bets. Awesome spot! There are so many options- I had the harira soup which warmed me on an extremely cold evening. There is a nice, colorfully painted eating area in the back where you can hang out and talk as long as you want. I also enjoyed the spinach and cheese cigar shaped snacks. Great Greek (delivery) restaurant... We've ordered from the restaurant a few times now and each time have really enjoyed the food! The hummus is great (not too salty with good chickpea/spice tang) and comes with plenty of warm pita bread (4-5 rounds). The chicken gyro, chicken adana, and chicken kebabs are great for those who (like me) don't really enjoy lamb and like a bit o' spice (although none are overly spicy). The french fries are okay, but get bumped up to "yum" when dipped into the red (hot) sauce that comes with every order. All in all a great place to order from! It bears mentioning that, unlike most Williamsburg and Brooklyn delivery restaurants that deliver in an hour or more, this restaurant usually delivers in 30-ish minutes. read more

Definitely a great option if you're craving something more intricate than Oasis's falafel down on Bedford. They do the basics well, but they also offer delicious stuff you can't get from street vendors. Really fresh, delicious vegetarian salads and platters. Very mild and smooth hummus (not too tangy, like store brands). One note: I wish an order came with a tad more pita (the pita-hummus ratio is off).
