Definitely a great option if you're craving something more intricate than Oasis's falafel down on Bedford. They do the basics well, but they also offer delicious stuff you can't get from street vendors. Really fresh, delicious vegetarian salads and platters. Very mild and smooth hummus (not too tangy, like store brands). One note: I wish an order came with a tad more pita (the pita-hummus ratio is off). I know good lamb kebabs, and this place definitely delivers the goods, and the price isn't bad when you set it up against cart food, which, despite also being delicious, isn't the same thing. The sides that they show behind the counter are also great. Plus everyone there's really nice. But after saying that they'll throw in homemade Turkish bread, which I took to mean the thick kind you get at sit-down Turkish places, they can't then throw in some of those Damascus Bakery things and hope that it'll pass. For the neighborhood their wraps are really good. Oddly at this place I much prefer the wraps to the pita sandwiches. Anytime I order a gyro on a pita it completely falls apart and I can hardly eat it! The wraps hold together much better like a giant stuffed filling burrito. Regardless, the wraps are slightly pricey but very filling and an excellent late night delivery option. I'll always love this place for how many times I ordered from it, it really brought Middle Eastern to my life regularly after I had moved to NYC from Texas. Thought I have moved on to much better eats these days it still commands my respect as a filling option. I chose Kestane for my first ever Seamless order and was incredibly happy with the results. Their delivery range is quite wide, and the food is fantastic. From the first taste, I can tell you that this is not your generic "middle-eastern" place. Someone in the kitchen knows what they are doing. Especially with the lentil soup, which came as a surprise to me, as I rarely order soup. It was delicious and hearty with just the right amount of spiciness... and arrived super hot! This place is decent, but certainly nothing amazing. I've had various items including the lamb kebab, the falafel and the grape leaves. All were reasonably tasty , but not outstanding. The prices are a bit higher than other, in my opinion more tasty, options within walking distance (for instance, Oasis is much tastier and cheaper). Most of the sandwiches here will run you around $7+, except the 3.50 falafel which is fairly bland for falafel. The sandwich condiments are a little lacking too. They give you shredded lettuce (ala McDonald's), tomatoes, and onions, with watery bland hot sauce and thin 'white sauce'. And, as others have noted, the pita bread is subpar. The staff is really friendly here and they do make the food to order. So it's fresh, but you'll need at least 10 minutes or so to get your food. Summary: You likely won't be disappointed nor blown away by anything here. Not a whole lot of cheap (less than $7) options. Nice staff. Not super fast. read more

Under promise, over deliver, love it. I ordered a cold meza platter and stuffed cabbage with lamb. The stuffed cabbage has very nice flavors, but was slightly overcooked. The cold meza platter, very fresh but a little bland for my tastes. Similar to other reviews, I found the Hummus bland and a little grainy, but still good. I usually go for the lamb kebab sandwich (huge, tons of meat, really fresh) but the falafel is pretty good too. Kestane Kebab has been a godsend for my neighborhood which otherwise lacks decent delivery options. My boyfriend and I get Kestane delivered a lot. Sometimes twice-in-a-night lot (hey you try stuffing your face with grilled chicken and taboule only to realize afterwards that you've got an itch that only can be scratched by baklava and baked rice pudding). This is some of the best Middle Eastern food that I've had in New York City. Everything is fresh and seasoned and grilled to perfection. Even the baba ganoush has an incredible smoky-yet-creamy thing going for it. Though I've ordered takeout from this place countless times, I've yet to actually step inside of the brick-and-mortar. I was so excited about this Halal/Mediterranean place opening up since there are limited options in the neighborhood. So we decided to try it out and order-in. We ordered the Lamb Shish Kebab plate, Chicken Shish Kebab plate, and an order of hummus. The lamb was cooked perfectly but served with overly salty rice and a piece of grilled tomato and a strange tasting green pepper. The hummus is horrible- very bland. Grocery store hummus is better! Additionally, the pita was dried out. I thought this would be a great place, but sadly it's not. No wonder I don't ever see anyone eating inside this place. Overall, a huge disappointment. Well, funny story. My girlfriend and I were actually on the way to buy pasta to eat for dinner. Walking by the kebab shop though, we said, "Wow. Kebabs sound way better." So we went inside. Classic New York environment, all the cooks are so loud and jolly. You can really tell they're cooking back there, it's very authentic. She ordered the lamb, and I got falafel. Two diet cokes to wet our appetites. We sat down and were eating within 10 minutes. We didn't even talk we ate so fast! My daughter who has handicaps and special needs went today with her care giver to buy food. They were treated horribly! We are clients for the past 8 or 9 years. my whole family eats from there. What happened today is unacceptable. I do not advice anyone to go to this place as they do not hold loyalty to their customers. My daughter's care giver ordered lamp kebab and chicken kebab with a side of okra. They were given 2 separate plates of greasy okra with tiny pieces of chicken and lamb mixed in it, inedible, not even presentable and charged them $41. She complained and said that this is not what she wanted but yet was forced to take it and pay for something she did NOT want and something that certainly do not cost as much!!!!!. I made a courtesy call trying to make them remedy the situation but both the person at the counter there and the manager (or owner) were incredibly rude! yelling on the phone and refusing to even listen. The food is inedible. I cannot even give it to my daughter fearing it will upset her stomach! when a restaurant does a mistake in the order, normally a decent place apologizes and fixes the problem. I want to love this place, but the portions have always been quite small especially for the price point. There is a nice seating area in the back, that is usually empty. The staff are very helpful, and the food does taste good. If you are craving Turkish food, I would certainly recommend this place, as there are not many other options, just be prepared to not quite get your bang for your buck (at least for the entrees). Modifying my review. I ordered Kestane again and was very disappointed with the experience. My order took a lot longer than expected - which I would have been OK with - but when I finally did get it, they put a few chunks of chicken and some rice in a box and called it a day. Where were the veggies? It's really not cool to charge $15 for an entree and not give you everything included in that entree. I felt like I was ripped off. Food was also cold and they threw two forks into the bag instead of a fork and knife - it was obvious that they were rushed and didn't care at all about the order. The shepherd's salad is a perfect post entree compliment to any meal. It's a simple, yet fresh salad consisting of fresh tomatoes, green peppers, cucumbers, onions, parsley and olive oil. I say post-entree because I genuinely believe that having your salad after your meal helps with digestion. It just makes your food settle better. Your food really doesn't need much help settling though with the food at Kestane Kebab. They really do Turkish food well, particularly their salads and kebabs. My favorite kind of kebab is kofte usually but I often go with chicken shish kebab if I want something lighter tasting. They really did a great job marinating the chicken breasts and finishing them off with seemingly the right amount of seasoning. The rice under the chicken could be even tastier than the chicken itself. This comes adorned with your usual red onion, pickled cabbage, cooked tomato, and hot peppers. This comes lovingly with hot sauce, tzaziki, and pitas. Their hot sauce is kind of a generic Louisiana type sauce which is kinda good, but very commonly found in many types of restaurants. I've actually had much better hot sauce at Middle Eastern restaurants in general. That goes for the tzaziki too. The quality of the pita was good but not fantastic. The hummus was a little bit disappointing to me. Personally, I usually prefer Israeli hummus and on some occasions, Greek hummus. This hummus just tasted a little too pasty for my pallet and overall I think I just enjoy hummus more when there is more emphasis on the chick pea and garlic taste. I don't like it overly pasty or creamy, it's supposed to have a certain consistency and this hummus missed that fine line completely. The salads, the kebabs, and seemingly most of the entrees here seem to be made with care and a certain level of authenticity that ends up making everything very tasty. I do recommend stopping by Kestane for a Turkish fix if you are in the Greenpoint area. No reason to make a special trip to come here, though. You can probably find a Middle Eastern restaurant to this standard in your neighborhood, too. read more
