Came back for lunch yesterday with a couple of friends. I had the Musakka a la Turk, one friend had the Vegetable Musakka and the other had the Turkish Omelet. The Musakka dishes are served with a side of rice pilaf and the Omelete with a side of fries. Bottom line - all three of us found the entrees to be bland. In fairness, I have only had Greek Musakka before, but I expected more seasoning and flavor, and my friend (the vegetarian) noted that they didn't get a hint of Bechamel - only mozzarella. I tend to agree the entree was heavy on the mozzarella and light on other flavors. We agreed that the rice was very good, both in texture and mild flavor. The french fries also were very good. The service here continues to be beyond excellent. Really good service. If I could give 3.5 as a score, I would, because the service was exceptional. But this is the second time I was here and both times found the entree to be bland. Maybe that's how Turkish food is - if so, please let me know, but I doubt it. We came across Kazan when searching Turkish restaurants. What we saw on their menu had us wanting to give them a try. Plus they have a great track record---they've been around for 44 years. They open for dinner on Saturdays at 5 p.m. That's when we arrived and were greeted and seated immediately. We liked their two top tables as they were wide and able to accommodate several items at once without feeling cramped. Our server was prompt getting to us. To drink, we both had ginger ale. For dinner, I had Filet Mignon Shish which consisted of: "charcoal grilled tender chunks of filet mignon skewered with fresh tomatoes, green peppers and onions. Served with rice pilaf and vegetable du jour". My husband had "Lamb Chops Karaman" which consists of: "Mediterranean cut tender lamb chops grilled to your perfection. Served with vegetable du jour and rice pilaf". Meals come with a side salad which is simply prepared. Our server offered to grind some pepper over them and we agreed. Plus two warm pitas along with butter were served. We found the food to be delicious. My filet mignon was served medium rare and was very tender, moist and flavorful. The grilled veggies were tender crisp. The vegetables du jour were nicely flavored and tender. The pilaf was wonderful---moist and flavorful. My husband really enjoyed his lamb chops. There were four on the plate cooked medium. He found them to be tender and flavorful. He, too, enjoyed the vegetables du jour and the pilaf. We saved room for dessert and ordered the "Mixed dessert tray for two". The selection varies each day so if you want to order this, ask your server what is on the plate that day. When we ordered it, there were 2 small pieces of each item. There was Turkish rice pudding, which was quite good and quite different from what one expects. Also, there was some pumpkin that was sweetened and tender. Creme caramel custard was also on the platter. The baklava was the star of the plate. Kazan makes their own which is orange flavored and awesome! The phyllo dough was crispy and light plus drizzled with honey and the orange flavoring came through clearly. My husband also had a Turkish coffee which he ordered medium sweet. I had Turkish tea which came with 5 sugar cubes on the side. 4/20/25 A few years ago I remember wanting to eat here, but my wife wasn't interested at the time. Today I find myself driving to this location to meet my dad and stepmother. This restaurant just happened to be open on an Easter Sunday. I don't know how often the manager has done this, but this place has been around for 45 years. I do wonder when their anniversary date is? The inside of the restaurant did not seem to have any photos posted on Google or Yelp. I wanted to get some photos of the inside while I was there. I am not one to dress up like Stone Barrington just to eat a meal, but at least at least I didn't wear shorts and t-shirt with sneekers. One guy who seemed to be looking in my direction for a very long time. My eyes seemed to keep look over to find myself be watched by the same man. I Wonder what was once his mind. I may never know. Ihan greeted us as our server for the day. The man gave off a great vibe. I noticed Ihan had memorized the menu and was able to answer many questions my family had about the menu. Ihan told us about the specials of the day, but when he told us about the calamari, I lost focus on everything else he said. I was hungry, but did not want to over do it, so I ordered small. I ordered The calamari and fries with cheese on them. The fries with cheese had to be added, or they would have been plain. The fries were hot and crispy. They reminded me of Arby's curly fries without the curly aspect. If there is a name for this type of fry, I would like to know. The calamari was hot, crispy and fully of flavors just like the fries. What I ordered was enough to fill me up. I would be tempted to go back to Kazan just for their fries again. I noticed the other stores around1454 Chain Bridge Rd shoping center aren't doing so well. Many of them were permanently closed on Kazan side of the store Nevertheless, there was one store we might visit the next time we are around this area. If I remember correctly, it was called Green Leaf. I wasn't very hungry after eating my meal, but since everyone was ordering dessert, I decided to try out the custard pudding. The pudding looked like an upside down Starbuck's plastic cup. The taste of it was adequate. I have tasted this kind of dessert before, but it has been decades since eating one. The taste just came back to me the instant the pudding made contact with my taste buds. My wife ordered the rice pudding. She enjoyed the taste of the rice pudding, but I did not. The custard pudding tasted better to me. My dad&stepmom shared a chocolate mousse. I dislike chocolate dark chocolate, and I am very pick on my milk chocolate. Server Ihan was wonderful. I just returned from lunch at Kazan's in McLean, VA, and the experience was stellar from beginning to end. [[HIGHLIGHT]]Both of us are mobility impaired, and were treated with great sensitivity--our choice of tables with plenty of room for canes, food etc.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] It was a Friday so we knew we were going to order the Wednesday/Friday special of Doner Kebab, but we hadn't anticipated the best side salad either of us had ever had: Cucumber, grated carrots, baby spinach leaves, regular lettuce leaves, shaved red cabbage with a remarkable green goddess dressing. We also ordered the Mezze Platter for one--knowing we would never be able to eat the same amount for two people, and were happy to split the hummus, spiced chicken strips, yogurt, sausage, feta, and lovely tomato shaped like a rose. The Doner Kebab orders were delicious--and huge. We definitely were full and hesitated before ordering a piece of baklava to split, but that would have been a mistake! Their pistachio baklava is made especially for them by a local woman and was, perhaps, the best baklava I have ever had. Service was impeccable even though they were very busy. Recently moved to McLean and have been looking for the hidden gems that this town goes to! We found Kazan and decided to try them out. It's a cute family own restaurant and the service is great. Very nice waiters, nice atmosphere, and good food. We started with the grilled halloumi that was fantastic! My husband got the lamb shish kabob and I got the doner kabob special (only available on certain days). My husband enjoyed his food and thought it was better than mine. I got the doner with the yogurt and what tasted like pita on the bottom. I think I would've liked it with some rice because I don't like the soggy texture. Still good though. I think this restaurant is very authentic and maybe I just don't love really authentic cuisine, so I went with the 4 stars. I thought the food was good, but my friends and I didn't love anything we got. We got several dishes and shared. I remember there were a few dishes we did not even know what we were eating. We were confused whether an eggplant dish we got was the eggplant or hummus, for example. I did enjoy the wine (pictured), but did not get any photos of the food, probably because we were a little under-impressed. He was friendly and went above and beyond to make sure we had a great time and felt at home. My family and I all enjoyed our entrees. My mom ordered the Adana Acili which she enjoyed. I got the Country Style Chicken which shocked me in its presentation - the yogurt sauce, spinach/tomato bed, chicken and rice had equal portion sizes which excited me. Not only was it a satisfying eat because of the equivalent portion sizes, the taste was great. If you're looking for a balanced meal, this is the right dish for you. I've never been too much of a fan of tomatoes either but Kazan managed to make them appetizing for me. To finish off the evening I ordered the Orange Baklava a la Kazan (nut-free) which had a great crunchy texture and delicate inside. Kazan has easily become our go-to Turkish restaurant in the DMV area. Both the food and the service are very consistent. The meat dishes stand out and my favorite is the Haleb Kebab with extra yogurt. If you are looking for a nice selection of meze, a nice ambiance, and good Turkish kebabs you should give it a try. Just love, love, loved this gem of a restaurant! Hands down some of the best Turkish food I've ever had, even in Turkey. The service was fantastic throughout and the manager/owner came to check on us mid-way through, which we appreciated as he seemed like he genuinely wanted to make sure we were doing well. My only issue now is that it's going to be very hard to not order every single thing that I ordered on my last visit because everything was out of this world! Here's what I got: - Imam bayildo (stuffed, luscious whole eggplant, which is served cold; not spicy at all, one of the best eggplants I've ever had, and I like me some eggplant) - Amavut cigeri (chunks of liver, lightly breaded, just packed with flavor, yet light, seemingly spiced just a tad to give it some zing, some of the best liver I've ever had) - Adana acili (juicy minced lamb with pickled onion, spiced yoghurt, tomato, rice, and pita was really balanced, really well done) - Rice pudding dessert (which we got on the house since we were newbies to the restaurant, had a pannacotta-like texture, albeit slightly more firm, then with a layer of a light grain or sugar on top, that bruleed just a bit to add some sweetness and char) The restaurant is quite large and has a nice covered patio with plenty of outdoor seating. Absolutely fantastic when we visited on a weeknight recently. That their doner kebab wasn't available when we dined didn't detract from the experience at all. After being warmly greeted upon arrival, we received excellent service throughout the meal. We started with the imam bayildi (stuffed eggplant served cold) and the arnavut cigeri (albanian style liver). Both were delicious, with excellent textures, especially the liver. For an entree, I shared the adana acili (lamb served with pickled onions, spiced yogurt, tomato, over rice and sliced pita). The lamb was juicy, and the flavors of the dish (creaminess of the yogurt, with the sour of the onions) complemented each other perfectly. Definitely try the rice pudding for dessert. Yelp lists the attire as "casual," but you could get away dressing up since the atmosphere is quite nice. read more

I also found it hard to justify paying nearly $30 for a relatively small plate of meat shavings that would only cost 4-5 euros in Europe and come wrapped in a durum with all the accompaniments.
