No one said hello when we walked in. Ordering is completely humanless at a kiosk. The workers do come out to bring your drinks and food to you. We bussed our own table at the end. There was no way to tip at the kiosk so I'm guessing that's why the service is very minimal, which makes sense. We got: Mapo Tofu Ramen- I like mapo tofu. I like ramen. The presentation was beautiful. But somehow, the flavor of this fusion was just... ok. It had way too much salt. It tasted much like mapo tofu even with the numbing spices and all, but it didn't taste anything like ramen. I can't really explain it. It just didn't flow well. In summary, unappealing as a ramen, too salty. Spicy Crispy Chicken Sandwich- This was delicious, but not enough chicken! It seemed like a third of our chicken patty was the crispy breading. Very disappointed in that. Also, the creamy sesame sauce it comes with, while delicious, didn't really go with the flavors of the sandwich. Sake- Don't remember what kind but I think it was a simple one. Came out in a sake set (the little pitcher and two cups), which was cool. Lychee Beer- Onmgah this was good, but it was like juice. A little too sweet. But hey, great for people who like a sweet fruity beer. So... I definitely like the space here better than Cap Hill. Food & drinks were overall a mix of delicious and ok.

Unfortunately unlike everyone and their mothers these last few years, I did not go to Japan, and…read morebecause of that, I've never had real authentic Okonomiyaki before. When I first heard that Okonomiyaki Jiban Ya was opening in Seattle, I was seriously hyped. Seeing all the pictures and videos, everything looked awesome. I came for a weeknight dinner with some friends recently, after having all the hype die down and the restaurant being less busy. There were only a few tables next to us, and it luckily wasn't super busy. One thing I'll say about the restaurant is that I love the interior: it seriously reminds me of what it would be like to be in a bar in Japan (I've never been in my life). It's comforting, warm, and there's a projector playing Haikyuu in the background. Each table has a QR code to order, as well as a group hot plate for the okonomiyaki to be served on. My friends and I ordered the pork and mala shrimp okonomiyaki, Hiroshima style (basically with noodles). For two okonomiyaki, it came out to about $20 per person so consider each plate ~$30. With that being said, I wish the portion was a bit larger given the price! Regarding the taste though, I thought everything mixed together very well -- my friends and I were a big fan of the shrimp especially, those pieces were huge! I'd definitely be interested in returning to try some new options, and really enjoyed the communal experience of sharing okonomiyaki with friends!

to be completely honest with you, i discovered this restaurant via social media. a video came…read moreacross my 'for you' page on instagram from some seattle content creator i'd never heard of (sorry to her) singing the praises of okonomiyaki jiban-ya. the influencer mentioned being personally invited by the owners to try it. the video didn't have a ton of views, so i bookmarked it for later. i found out later that this was a full-scale campaign: many content creators were invited before the opening of the actual restaurant to try it out. my friend saw a similar video from a different person. that's fine and all, especially because the owners also own secret congee and ginger & scallion, two extremely popular and delicious restaurants here in seattle. but it didn't give the full picture of how the restaurant actually functions... because it functions very poorly. the same friend i mentioned above, their partner, and i all decided to go since we were nearby. it was quite busy, and it was their soft opening, so i was ready for it to be kinda hectic. hectic is an understatement, though. we were sat fairly quickly thankfully. someone comes by and takes our order. things were off to a great start... we got some appetisers, the mala koji duck breast and the takuan pickled radish - and they ended up coming out pretty fast. we also ordered two okonomiyaki - natto and scallop & cheese. this is where it went downhill. we ended up sitting there for more than TWO HOURS without food and nobody would tell anyone what was going on. servers were actively ignoring people. waters were empty. we almost walked out. while the appetisers were fantastic, the okonomiyaki sucked. i hate to put it so crassly, but they were extremely thick, like too thick, so they were undercooked towards the top and the bottoms were burning since they are brought out on a hot stone. by the time they came out, we were starving. we devoured them, but we payed and left knowing that that was NOT worth the two-hour wait. not only that, but the bathrooms are terrible. if you are of a larger stature, - tall and/or wide - good luck. you'll barely be able to fit and, uh, everyone can see into the bathroom. not into the stall at least but everyone can see you enter / exit the stall. it's really uncomfortable, cramped, and short. it's short and cramped even for me, and i'm 5'3" at an average weight for my height. i'm completely deterred from coming back. if the food was actually good, i'd maybe consider giving it another try since it was the soft opening... but the terrible experience i had plus its extremely awkward location that is nowhere near public transit and does not have great parking makes it a definite 'no' for the foreseeable future. if you're coming from far away, it's certainly not worth it.

When we visited on a Saturday for lunch at noon, the place was completely packed. The owner gave us an estimated 30 minute wait time, which steadily increased to over 45 minutes by the time we got our food 25 minutes later. I think this scared away a lot of people so it started to clear out soon afterwards. The restaurant is small and cramped with about 20 seats in a really tiny space with barely any room to move. It's completely self service; order at the kiosk, pick up food and utensils from the counter, then bus the table after finishing. Pork Katsu Soup Curry, Spicy Level 4 ($24) - The entree comes with two dishes, one with the rice, tonkatsu, and a slice of lemon, the other with the curry soup. The rice approaches being mushy, not giving the best mouthfeel. The tonkatsu isn't great either. It has a thick breading that's only fried until very slightly crisp on the outermost layer, with the rest of the breading becoming gummy and unpleasant. The pork isn't dried off that well before being breaded, so the crust detaches without much effort. The pork itself is fine; it's thinly pounded, not super overcooked or tough. Neither the pork nor the breading is seasoned much, if at all, so both are bland. Things improve when switching over to the soup curry. The soup has a concentrated savory curry flavor, filled with salt and curry spices with just a hint of tanginess to round things out. At spicy level 4, it's barely spicy at all, barely heating up the mouth at all. They actually deep fry veggies to order with the dish - in this case, a whole potato (probably par baked first), some eggplant, and broccoli. This gives a nice crust on the outside, which also helps them retain some texture in the soup. The potato, unfortunately, isn't cooked all the way through; the thickest part of the interior still is a bit hard with a raw potato taste. The curry also comes with two shishito peppers and a simply boiled quarter carrot. I got unlucky (or perhaps lucky?) getting one of the rare spicy shishitos, which turned out way more spicy than the broth. (4/5) Aojiru Beef Brisket Soup Curry, Spicy Level 2 ($24) - I think the base is the same, but is modified by adding a bunch of pureed green, and the substitution of tomatoes and cilantro for fried broccoli. The result? A much more vegetal tasting curry. There's no bitterness to be had here. For some reason, this curry at spice level 2 is more spicy than the other one at spice level 4. Still not very spicy at all, but it's definitely inconsistent. Instead of tonkatsu, this comes with four pieces of slowly stewed beef brisket. It's excellent, with both fatty and lean pieces, all the toughness cooked out by hours upon hours of being stewed. I would definitely choose the beef brisket over the katsu in the future. (4/5) Curry Lab Sapporo serves some warm and comforting food. While their food definitely has some issues, they still bring a flavorful and unique dish to the Seattle area. I'd visit again to try more. Bathrooms - Single unisex room.

The popcorn chicken is a Taiwanese-style popcorn chicken made with fried chicken thigh and topped with salt and white pepper. If they use five-spice powder, I couldn't really tell since I was popping the chicken into my mouth as fast as I could without burning myself. It's super juicy and flavorful. I didn't get any hard bits of connective tissue despite it being made from deboned chicken thigh. I would get this again! I also got to try some wings. Their wings were super moist. When the order came out, the wings were piping hot. Biting into them would release a gush of hot juices, nearly causing a burn. I actually did burn myself, so I couldn't tell the seasoning as much, but they were delicious. Service was fast, and there were a bunch of people getting takeaways.

Good noodles, good chashu, and delicious broth on their "Original" ramen (which is pretty much Tonkotsu, I think). It's lacking in nothing. I also appreciate the way they structure the menu: most toppings are optional (like egg and seaweed) in exchange for a modest base price. Yet even when you add stuff back in, the sum is still reasonable, e.g. with added seaweed and a shot of extra noodles, my bowl came out right around $20 after tax/tip. Service is quick and courteous. This place has only one problem: the wait is damn eternal. I waited 50+ minutes, and the only reason I got in that _fast_ was because I came solo and qualified for counter seating. The couple ahead of me in line waited at least 90... and this was on a Monday! But that's hardly the restaurant's fault.

It's located in Capitol Hill with a fun vintage Japanese-inspired interior. Service was friendly and the host was especially nice. We also had no trouble finding street parking nearby. We ordered quite a few things to share but these were my favorites: - Uni Seafood Creamy Maze-Udon: best item here imo. Creamy, rich, and topped with a variety of fresh seafood. Definitely the most memorable dish of the meal. - Tokyo Shoyu Ramen: Yummy! The broth was light but flavorful and the noodles had a nice chew and grabbed onto the soup really well. The veggies added a nice crunch. - Bara-Chirashi Donburi: Super fresh with a nice variety of high quality fish and perfectly seasoned. No additional soy sauce needed but I did ask for extra wasabi. We also tried a couple other items. All were good but nothing that particularly stood out. Glad I checked this place out while I was in Seattle!
